DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A DOCTOR!  TAKE EVERYTHING I SAY WITH A GRAIN OF SALT

I too have PCOS.  It is often common to have insulin problems with this.  With me, my cells don't accept insulin, so instead of insulin breaking down carbs, it just turns them into fat (this is what I understand from my doctor, as you can see I AM NOT A DOCTOR).  Because of that my body over produces insulin and causes a bunch of other nasty side affects including the weakening of my pancreas.  Because of this my doctor put me on a pill to enable certain cells in my body to be able to "open up to insulin."  When I'm taking my pills I can maintain and even loss weight.  When I'm not, I gain EVEN IF I'm only eating 1500 cals.  I think to diagnos the insulin problem they tested my insulin and glucose level.  Too much glucose and too much insulin means things aren't working right...if I remember correctly.  Might be worth asking about.  Like the other posters, I too have to watch my carb intake.  Oh the joys of human anatomy.  Apparently, all bodies are not created equal.  Good luck.

Weight Loss Cook Book Suggestions? Jan 15 2008

I definitely agree with the foreman grill!  It's awesome for chicken breasts and low fat polish sausage (which I love).

I would also suggest something like a magic bullet (compact blender).  I make smoothies in mine several times a week as a snack and as a preventative measure to needless snacking or weakness in ice cream cravings.  It's a life saver for me, even if I only use it for smoothies.

I'm 235 right now and want to be 225 by halloween.  That might seem like a lot since it's almost October by now, but I'm on my cycle so I've got a lot of water weight!

I'm going to Africa in December and don't want to be a heavy and uncomfortable as I was on my last journey over seas.

Thanks for putting this group together.  I'll let you know on friday how I'm doing!
Foods Lowering my carbs while still taking in fiber Sep 12 2007

I DEFINITELY recommend a high fiber cereal!!  I LOVE some of those AllBran cereals, particularly BranBuds.  There are like 13 grams of carbs in only 80 calories or something.  I think it has about 35 carbs per serving but the calorie to fiber ratio is definitely way low.  I love it with a little splenda and sy milk.  It would probably be good in yogurt too.  It's not the best tasting stuff in the world but it makes me feel super healthy and awesome.  I'm really prone to screwing up my digestinal track, but a bowl of that stuff everyday keeps me from getting upset stomachs and stuff like that.  So I recommend some sort of high fiber bran cereal.

For lunch:  There's nothing really better for back packing than those tuna fish packets.  You don't need to keep them cold and you can get some of those mayo or light mayo packets for free from the grocers deli or a fast food place and put them right into the packet.  The extra fat in the regular mayo will probably be fine since you'll be upping your caloric expenditure.  Couple it with some nuts and raisins or an apple and you'll have an awesome, super portable lunch that will give you tons of energy.  That's what we used to do when we were canoing/hiking all day.  If you don't like tuna you could try the canned chicken.  I can't stand the stuff but some people like it.  Hope that helps.

Weight Loss healthy meals?? Feb 21 2007

For breakfast I usally have a banana, a low cal granola bar, and yogurt.  That's about 250 calories.  It's a nicely balanced meal (3 major food groups) and it fills me up...AND it quick and portable (I usually eat at the office)!

I also love whole wheat pasta and marina sauce.  It's about 250 cals per serving but believe me the whole wheat pasta expands a lot more while cooking (so give it extra time to cook) and fills me up a lot more.  2 tablespoons of that bottom shelf parmesan cheese is only about another 40 calories.  So I usually add that too!  So tasty!

Good luck!

I'm new to this too and love pastas!  One cure for that pasta craving that I've discovered it whole wheat pasta.  I usually save most of my calories for the evening because I stay up pretty late.  That allows me to have a bigger dinner.  A typical serving of whole wheat pasta is going to have about 180 calories and believe me, it's A LOT more fillng than regular pasta.  Then read the labels on the pasta sauces.  Marinara's are typically low in cals but there are some light alfredo's that are light too!  So you can have pasta at home it you HAVE to cook and it wouldn't be as boring as bland chicken and steamed veggies.

To me...it looks like you're in a rut.  To get out I would find low calorie ways to change it up and add flavor to your diet.  Otherwise, I get bored and quit.

Eating out all the time would kill me.  Sorry not much advice for you there.  Personally, I like going to buffalo wing places and ordering grilled chicken tossed in hot sauce.  The flavor makes me enjoy the chicken more (which I usually hate) and still feel like I'm taking part in the, out to eat experience.  I hear that spicy foods fill you up faster and raise your metabolism.  So when I go out I try to go to Indian, Ethiopian, or other ethnic restaruants.  I think they use less fat and creams anyway.  So maybe switch up the type of restaurants you're going to...

For real!!! I'm super proud of you too!!! 85 pounds is nothing to kid about! That must have been a lot of hard work.  I'm used to quick diets with dramatic results.  The thought of doing this for a year (which I know I'll have to do) makes me almost sick, but it's awesome to see your steadfastness.  Keep it up girl!
