| Weight Loss | Weight training make you lose weight? | May 12 2008 20:30 (UTC) |

I am now older, but before I had kids and was your age, I worked out with weights and exercised very seriously from about 17 until 21. Here are a few things I'd like to note from your original post: 1) If you want to lost 10-lb, forget the 10-lb goal mentally (the reason behind this is because your weight may fluctuate a little when you begin weight training) 2) With weight training, you do not want your food to be at too high of a deficit trying to lose weight, because you need to feed your muscles (not technical wording, I'm no trainer, but that's the way I think of it) 3) If you want to weight train for toning, you do not need to increase weights to a higher level, increasing reps and sets of reps using smaller weights will help tone (I wanted to be a body-builder back then so I increased weights always doing 3 sets of 10) Instead, you may start with 3 sets of 10 reps and move up to 3 sets of 15 reps, then 3 sets of 20 reps, or add more sets. 4) By doing these toning exercises with weights, you may not lose weight at first, but you may notice your clothes fitting more loosely...this is that thought behind training where you are gaining muscle definition but losing fat so your body is more fit, but your body actually looks better and is more tone and you weigh exactly the same (which is why I said to put the weight lose goal mentally away if you plan to do this...weight is just a number) I went through this which is why I'm telling you this. Back then, I looked thinner and more in shape at 127 lbs than at 123 lb (I was flabbier, more fat, at the lower weight). I hope this helps answer your question. I also did cardio back then, so it was a combo of both. ~Ree~ |

| Recipes | soy milk vs. regular milk | May 09 2008 21:12 (UTC) |

Just wanted to add to the discussion because I have never tried soy milk and never will (and glad I didn't). I was allergy tested a while back and am allergic to soy. Soy is one of the top 8 allergy foods (like milk is too, but most people know they are allergic to milk). Soy is in so, so many things, it's really hard to tell. I always thought I had irritable bowel syndrome or something wrong with my stomach, but when I cut out the foods I was allergic to, including the ton of soy products, I feel great now! For me, I think soy is overrated as a health food (my own personally opinion), basically it is just really a lot cheaper to produce. Soy is also on the rise in allergies for children, there are studies out there trying to figure out why. My 16-yr old is also allergic to soy. (sorry I don't have the study links right now) Soy is also in the Pea Family (Fabaceae) of plants, this is the same family as peanuts (which I'm also allergic to) and I'm allergic to peas and green beans, all in this family. Maybe that's why there is a nutty flavor, who knows. As for me...I feel just wonderful without all the soy protein bars and soy milk, thank you...but again, some of this is just my opinion and based on the fact of my allergies |

May 9th: 165.5 - higher by .5, I had a stressful week and had emotional eating BUT: it motivated me to get on an exercise plan... 1st: I joined the Y and blocked out my workout time on the calendar for the rest of the month. 2nd: I will be doing a 5k race (3.1 miles) on July 5th and a mini-marathon (13.1 miles) in Sept and I have to start training 5 days a week. My next week weigh-in is sure to be better!!!! ~Ree~ |

Original Post by taintmesweet: I just asked this question recently because I'm allergic to apples...and I used pumpkin puree this past weekend, I love it! A very great alternative! Original Post by alleyway: I just have to add that the canned pumpkin I buy has only one ingredient: Pumpkin...nothing else in the ingredient list. I've had both (not by me, I've only used canned) and I like the canned better too! This recipe sounds good though, yum...I like the idea of the graham crackers too. ~Ree~

I make these for my on-the-go breakfast...it has a decent CC score http://caloriecount.about.com/recipe/104889.h tml I also make enough and freeze them, they freeze well. I have a lot of food allergies like soy and apples, so you could play around and find other combos, use applesauce instead of pumpkin...I saw other recipes with soy protein powder (my recipe is a breakfast bar, not high in protein). ~Ree~ |

You could try something like this: Chicken w/Tomato Corn Salsa 12 oz boneless skinless chicken breast Mix all the ingredients except chicken (recipe here for 6 servings, one above is for 3 servings) http://www.recipezaar.com/230486 Spray a frying pan with non-stick cooking spray, cook chicken on medium until cooked through (spice as desired while cooking). You can check cooking times here http://www.recipetips.com/kitchen-tips/t--911 /chicken-cooking-times.asp. For a 4 oz breast, cook about 10 minutes each side. Top with 1/3 of Tomato corn salsa! Running this through the recipe analyzer here at CC, it scores a B+!!! ~Ree~ |

I never could cook either...I just taught myself. I did have basic cookbooks (some Betty Crocker one) that tells you how to bake potatoes, gives all the cooking times for meats, the different cuts of meat...stuff I knew nothing about. You could start small and try stuff. I use recipezaar.com a lot to search for recipes. You can search and filter by categories...so lets say I search for... http://www.recipezaar.com/187309 Here's a chicken recipe, 5 ingredients http://www.recipezaar.com/237986 There is also a category for Beginner cook and a category for 3 or less steps. Don't know if that would help, I made my mistakes while I was learning too and that's okay to mess up. I still mess up sometimes when trying something I've never attempted. ~Ree~

I completed a once-a-month cooking/planning this past weekend (for May), though a few things I saved for a few nights this week. I didn't get to any individual lunches for me yet, though I do tend to take leftovers which works well. Here is what I made or planned, the items w/an asterisk are things I have in stock, but since I'll be cooking it on the weekend, I did not precook and freeze but have it on my monthly meal planner. I also have breakfast items, snacks for the kids to grab, etc. Just remember, I have 4 kids so I have to please them too so my meals incorporate that, things they like and will eat. Parm-Crusted Salmon Grab & Go frozen Items:
Breakfast Items:
Side:
Some of the things I need to cook with, I keep in stock and only need a little for each recipe, such as olive oil, brown sugar, milk, spices, etc. Otherwise, for a family of 6 my total cost to make all that was listed above was approximately $200 (though it's be a little higher because a few meat items I already had in my freezer from a sale). I shop sales and cook as fresh as possible. I have 30 meals and have nothing planned for May 31st because that is my next shopping/prep day for the June cooking menu. I otherwise will shop weekly for perishable stuff and other sides, especially salad fixings which we eat a lot of, fresh vegies & fruit. I get cereal for the kids, yogurts, snack whole wheat crackers and things like that. I like to leave a few slots open for lunch or dinner on the weekends and make something I just feel like. Our grocery bill is still very high with my weekly items and household items that I need to buy but the once-a-month cooking helps, and shopping sales and stocking up helps. I also like the planning, I create a menu and hang it on the side of the frig, my meals are planned (but can change if needed) and it takes a lot of pressure off me during the week when I'm busy! Just thought I'd share :) ~Ree~ |

Original Post by narfblast: I agree, lasagnas make excellent meals to freeze, we just had spinach lasagna last night. I do freeze my noodles though and run under hot water and then add to soup during the end since they were already cooked. Just like with rice, when I'm done cooking the noodles 'al dente' then I run them under cold water to stop the cooking process so that I can freeze them. I do agree though, noodles may sometimes be just a little different from freezing then if you just cooked them. My tomato soup I make, I just precook the noodles and the ground turkey and freeze in separate bags. The day I cook, I place the tomato sauce and chicken stock in the pot (which are things I always have on hand), add my spices and heat. While it's heating, I quickly reheat the meat in a skillet and add to the pot and run the noodles under water and add to the pot. The mistake I was making before was freezing my spices, it tastes better to add them the day of cooking for soups, that's what I found out. I love all the different ideas here, thanks everyone for contributing :) ~Ree~ |

Original Post by tracyaudette: I used a muffin mix this weekend which asked for 1/4 cup oil and I used 1/4 cup canned pumpkin, they came out great...so my guess is that to substitute equally...but this is new to me so I have some more experimenting to do. And for the muffin mix, it was chocolate chip so I decreased the water from 3/4 cup to 1/4 cup and added 2 medium sized mashed bananas which is about 1/2 cup, so I substituted the banana equally with the decrease in water. The kids absolutely loved the muffins and they are already gone, but with it they had nutrients from the banana and pumpkin! ~Ree~ |

| 'Healthier Homemade Breakfast Bars' http://www.calorie-count.com/recipe/104889.ht ml Great to grab and go! If you're like me, I'm not a morning person so these work great and I know what's in them, not like the breakfast bars from the store that have a ton of ingredients. They freeze very well and once dethawed can be eaten as is or warmed in the microwave. I'm allergic to applesauce, so I used pumpkin but feel free to substitute with applesauce and give it a try. Thanks to some advice in the recipe forum, I was able to make these healthier, I will definitely be using pumpkin for a lot of my baking from now on. I also made muffins this weekend for the kids using pumpkin instead of oil and they turned out great (Chocolate Banana muffins)! ~Ree~ |

| hhaussler - for my lasagnas, I am cooking meat first for meat sauce, layering and freezing like that, then cooking later. I place my lasagna noodles in cold water for at least 10 minutes, this softens them so they are easier to layer with.
I am getting recipes & shopping ready for another meal prep day soon, so I'll let everyone know if I find anything fantastic! tracyaudette - I ordered my first recipes from savingdinner.com and so far, they sound fantastic!...thanks for the link. ~Ree~ |

| So if I'm allergic to pears also...most fruit basically, I can eat bananas, grapes, oranges and grapefruit...anything else is pretty much off limits.
I guess I could puree bananas but then whatever I'm baking would definitely have a banana flavor? I'm looking for a non-fruit subsitute for applesauce...and I suppose it would probably be more fattening? hmmm... And what would be a comparable substitute vinegar for cider vinegar, wasn't sure which one would be closest. Thanks for any thoughts on this, ~Ree~ |

| Recipes | How do you thicken chili? | Apr 14 2008 15:52 (UTC) |

| I use peeled crushed tomotoes in a can instead of tomato sauce, this automatically makes it thicker because of the tomotoes, but doesn't really change the nutrition content. I also use peeled crushed tomatoes for a marinara sauce I make.
I definitely like peeled crushed rather than diced tomatoes in recipes also. ~Ree~ |

| Here's some recipes:
http://www.calorie-count.com/recipe/104880.ht ml (posted in once-a-month cooking thread) http://www.calorie-count.com/recipe/7226.html ?refresh=1 Great soup recipe. My kids like it better with noodles though so I make it with 8 oz noodles instead...I like it the way it's listed in the recipe with the brown rice. You could also add vegies to it. I tried to add cooked zuchini once, but the kids wouldn't have it. I'm not sure the sodium is right on the calorie count recipe because I couldn't find a match for what I use, I use a chicken base that I keep in the frig and use 3 tsp, but the sodium is lower...just check the type of boullion you use and then work that into the recipe. (hint, you can also use low fat ground turkey, I do that a lot too). Here's a good crockpot recipe to feed the family, buy the pork loin when on sale http://www.calorie-count.com/recipe/7005.html , serve with steamed vegie or salad and some rice or noodles. Fats a little high on this one, but it still scores a B+... http://www.calorie-count.com/recipe/7003.html add healthy vegies like a salad on the side and some whole wheat pita bread http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/18 042.html. As for the spinach in the lasagna, my son who hates vegetables absolutely loves this lasagna. An A- meal, http://www.calorie-count.com/recipe/7160.html I know shrimp may be expensive where you are, but for me, Meijer has these Super Saturday sales and I can buy 3 bags of frozen shrimp from $10.99 to $12.99...that's for 3 lbs of shrimp which is great! Instead of spinach and mushrooms, use vegies your family likes! ~Ree~ |

| I have a family of 6 and it is hard nowadays to afford groceries on a budget, I know. It's even harder to try to buy healthier, natural stuff on a budget. I do not buy boxed foods because I have food allergy restrictions and buy as fresh and natural as possible, racking up my grocery bill.
One thing I buy a lot for meat is ground turkey, Jenny-o is popular and has a 99% free one http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/11 5182.html I live in the midwest and we have grocery stores called Meijer, I love their ground turkey the best and it ranges from $ .99 to $1.19 a pound. Lots of savings for any recipe that involves ground beef or ground chuck plus less fat and calories. I just started a once-a-month cooking thread in this recipe forum. This is another way to save money. I buy items and stock up when they are on sale, then once a month do a big cooking and freeze. You can check out recipes in that thread http://www.calorie-count.com/forums/post/9179 8.html and keep checking back since there will be some more recipes to come. I used to never buy salmon because it was too expensive...but, I buy it now, my family loves it, it's easy to cook and it is so healthy for you. Where I live, it runs $4.99 to $5.99 lb on sale. Salmon is easy to bake, you can put some lemon juice on it, sprinkle it with spices and bake for 20 - 25 minutes at I think 375 degrees...and voila. I serve it with a salad and cut up fruit (I buy what is on sale that week). If I have leftovers, I use it for lunch the next day, or make a fish chowder. I also shop in a way to save money. I do not keep a credit card balance but use my credit card so I can hit the sales when the sales are good. Here's what I do: - I have a set grocery/household supply budget - I buy during the month according to the sales, all charged to one credit card - My husband is paid every 2 weeks - His 1st paycheck of the month, I pay half our grocery budget on the credit card - His 2nd paycheck of the month, I pay the credit card off (no interest charged) - I have an online acct for the credit card and keep track of my spending so I do not go over my budget - If I've been spending a lot at the beginning of the month, then I have to be super careful toward the end of the month. - Using this method, I can stock up when the grocery store has a great sale on items I use a lot! ~Ree~ |

| Thanks clairelaine for all the recipes.
skwinkle - I do freeze a lot of my items in Ziploc freezer bags. And the hint from santonacci is good too. I did purchase some foil pans for lasagna that I am going to wash and use again (though they will only last a few times until needing to be thrown away). I recycle and try to conserve and eliminate waste but in some areas, I just go for convenience such as using ziplocs and throwing them away. I may purchase some plasticware to freeze in for my work lunches, but I'll probably try to mostly freeze in ziploc...I hate using plastic in the microwave. Now I'm off to check out all this links to recipes! ~Ree~ |

| How To Freeze Rice to use for easy cooking later! I'd rather have real cooked brown rice, not the quick stuff.
Cook 3 cups rice with water as directed. When cooked, place rice in strainer and rinse under cold water until cooled to stop the cooking process (if you skip this, the rice can keep cooking and come out dry after reheated from the freezer). Fill ziplock freezer bags in serving sizes you'd like, family or individual. Flatten and make sure to remove air. Seal and label, then freeze. Take out of freezer when needed for recipes. |

| And how did I do once a month cooking for the chops... Pork Loin was on sale (great deal) so I purchased a large pork loin and had the meat counter slice it into boneless loin chops, about 18-20 altogether. First meal, Citrus marinated chops (6 to 7 chops) Second meal, 6 to 7 chops w/my favorite BBQ sauce - threw into a freezer bag, ready to grill or cook stovetop later. Third meal, 6 chops for Pork chop packs for the grill. Laid out 6 squares of foil, placed onion slices, covered with pork chop, seasoned chop with seasoning salt and garlic pepper, topped with a dollap of BBQ sauce. Wrapped up packet and froze all 6 in large freezer bag. (I'll dethaw overnight and cook on the grill in the foil packets on cooking day.) 3 meals for the month for my family and something my husband will enjoy doing, grilling food that's already prepared, easy for him! |
