I know it can be discouraging to see a long off date under the target, what the majority above me have posted is really good advice one should adhere to. I have about 60 lbs to lose and although I know it can reasonably and conservatively take me a year to lose it, it can still feel discouraging because although I know I am making a lifestyle change, it's a bigger hill to climb. Like others have said, mini goals help to take the focus on the big number, whatever it may be. I have taken it as far as losing in 10 pound increments in the goals section of my account settings, although I keep my LTG in mind, the ten I lose from the 60 seems so much more doable! HTH! |

Just thought I'd pop in and back out again lol! Hi everyone! Wow everyone seems to be doing fabulous! Way to go! I haven't disappeared. I have been lurking but have not been writing in so much because I am reading the site at work. Here's a little info on my progress in and outside of weight loss. I have finished school for the year. I recieved honours for my 4.5/5 GPA for last semester. I also started my job back again last week (I work in the summers as an office clerk for my municipality). I have not given up on my diet either. I am walking on my breaks and am eating decent. I think in my last post, (34 posts and about 3 weeks ago) I was 199. Now I am 195.4 so I am still on track. Well that's it for now! Back to work... house work that is!

Ekai ~ Thanks! Fly ~ I'm sure those pounds will fall right off! I hope you enjoyed your vacation because then it'd be worth it! Brenda ~ So sorry to hear about the loss you've had to endure. Sounds like things are looking up for you though and with what you've described you're definitely deserving of it! Welcome to the group! ********************************************* *** Me: I am OFFICIALLY out of the 200s! Not by much (1lb) but it still feels GREAT because I haven't seen a "1" before the other numbers on the scale in a loooong time. Here's the stats: Started CC Feb. 19/09: 216.2 lbs Weight at beginning of challenge: 210 lbs Last Week's Weight: Kept fluctuating in and around 203 Today's Weight: 199! I've lost a total of 17.2 lbs since Feb 19/09 that are hopefully gone forever! |

Ali ~ I still drink while dieting. During my slip up I drank too much at once but I am back on track now. I generally keep myself down to two drinks max if I do drink and I'll drink anything lol...well not anything but I like wine, beer, most liquour! I drank a little extra this weekend because of Easter. I had a few beers during the day and wine with the dinner. For a "diet drink" I like vodka with club soda and a splash of diet cranberry juice. It's only about 60 - 70 calories. Red wine is also low in calories but I don't tend to stick to the 3.5 oz serving. If I drink red wine, I just have one glass and count it as two. Whatever I drink I make sure to get in a lot of water with it/between drinks and after because alcohol really puffs me up.
Roger~ Hey buddy! Yay for the scale going in the right direction! Tanya~ Good job on the loss this week! That's great news! Ekai~ Thank you so much for writing this. I can definetely say I agree that maintaining during a stressful period is hard but it is way better than gaining! I think that would have made me all the more negative! Good job on the two pound loss! ____________________________________ Me ~ Things are starting to look up for me a little bit. While not all my troubles have gone away some of the bigger ones have been taken care of or don't seem so big anymore. My body seems to sense it too because the scale is moving again. While I was bummed that the scale wasn't moving or even went up a little bit realizing that I have lost over 16 lbs in roughly 7 weeks (rounded down) really helped to put things into perspective for me so even if the scale isn't always agreeable with me there is still a bigger, better picture to look at. This weekend was really helpful for me also with getting back to my old self. I took Friday through Monday off and spending time with my family, celebrating the holidays and just laying back was really therapeutic in a sense. I also spent a lot of time outside doing yard work and inside getting some spring cleaning done. I am not too sure how many calories I burned but it has left me with quite sore back and leg muscles so I know I got a good workout! I got on the scale today and I am down again! I am down to 199.8 so hopefully on my "official weigh in" (on Thursday) I'll know that I am really out of the 200s. |

Thanks everyone for the support and letting me stick around. I did have a terrible two weeks when I was doing my placement it makes me really worry how I will fare once I am done school for the year and back at work for the summer at the end of this month. I think I will do better at my job than I did on my placement though. I am trying to think of strategies to keep me from going off track again. Also, computer policies/ internet use at my job isn't as strict as they were at my placement. As long as I am doing it on my time/breaks I can log in on CC whereas I couldn't log in at the placement. I kept up with my counting since last Thursday but I didn't lose any weight even though my deficit has been 500 - 750 a day. On Friday, after I logged back in the scale read 200.6 but for the last few days it's stuck at 203.4. I am very stressed out right now, money is tight, exams are near and I have a lot of things going on that are pulling at me so I attribute it to that and also possible water retention because I haven't been drinking enough water. I am not going to obsess about it right now though. I am just going to try to keep up what I am doing, drink more water, move my body and count calories and hope it will sort itself out... Oh yeah, and try to RELAX! Sorry I haven't been checking in as much as I should. I will get better at it. I need to. Like I said in my last post. I slip without the support... and outside of CC, there's not a whole lot out there for me in terms of support. Although I haven't slipped this week with my diet; I am finding it really hard to feel positive and am finding myself slipping into negativity and negative thoughts because of stress... You guys are all so awesome at lifting me and each other up that I feel better just writing this.

Hey everyone... Okay I am not going to lie. I fell of the wagon for two weeks. I stopped CCing, didn't exercise, definitely didn't drink enough water, drank too much on my date night with hubby and ate a lot of junk food. I am hoping I can still be in the group. I do so poorly without you guys. Once I stopped checking in I lost focus and didn't lose much weight. So here's my new stat Starting Weight: 210 Weight two weeks ago: 203.8 Current Weight: 203.2 Loss in two weeks .6 lbs (at least I didn't gain) Tori |

| Weight Loss | Becoming a bit disheartened when looking at other's goals.. | Mar 27 2009 12:40 (UTC) |
5 |
Like so many others have said, don't compare yourself to others! It can be disheartening and demotivating. I appreciate that it can be difficult to set a goal especially if you have never been at the weight that you aim to be at. In addition, one person's ideal weight might vary from person to person even if they are the same height and gender. I know that at my goal weight, about 145-150 5'3.5" others might consider fat, unhealthy etc. and a BMI calculator is sure to tell me so but I don't care because I am not them and that BMI calculator doesn't have to put my jeans on everyday. I find it helpful to look at my weight loss in small chunks. I make short-term goals that are progressive and can feel proud of and at the same time can realistically achieve. For me 20lb goals is working. The number is big enough to be achievable yet challenging and it isn't as scary as the number I need to lose. I have almost lost my first 20 and am getting excited. If I look at the big number and focus on it then it is quite overwhelming. |

I think tossing the msg-sodium laden packet is probably the only real improvement you can make to ramen from a health stand-point. In addition I would eat less of the serving of ramen, about half since Ramen tends to be a little high in calories per serving. Ramen isn't exactly packed with vitamins and minerals as it is. Nonetheless your idea of cooking the noodles in broth is probably much better than the sodium packet it comes in. I would also add veggies, chicken or tofu to the noodles to give it more nutrition.

I would say to keep eating healthily but don't worry too much about the calorie count right now. I am sick too and have been eating quite a bit less than I should but I am not too worried at the moment because getting better is more important than worrying about weight. Eat when you're hungry. Take a lot of fluids and rest! |

| Weight Loss | How often do you weigh yourself? | Mar 22 2009 05:50 (UTC) |
15 |
I weigh myself pretty much daily and log my weight just as frequently but I have only one "official" weigh in day (Thursday) and go by that. I know that weight fluctuates so a higher number than expected doesn't freak me out and a much lower than expected number doesn't elate me. I do find though that weighing in regularly keeps me accountable and more conscious about the things that I choose to put in my body like sodium, caffeine and alcohol, all of these give me a higher number on the scale the next day at some point or another. I know that weighing in daily is not necessary for a lot of people and for some it should be avoided if they tend to obsess over the numbers. I say to each their own. Do whatever works for you. If you don't like to or don't benefit from a daily weigh in then don't do it but if you do then go with what works. I know for me it helps keep me on track, makes me more aware, puts things into perspective and at the very least satisfies my curiosity. :) |

Don't worry about the big number in ten days. It is normal to lose a lot in the first week to couple of weeks when you start eating healthy and exercising. Much of it is likely water weight but it is still nice to see the scale go down! I lost about 6.5 lbs in the first week as well (been a member for years but started again on Feb. 19th). Trust me it will slow down! I have been losing 1.5 or 2lbs each week since the first week (1.5lb loss is the target I've set for myself). Good for you for making the decision to lose weight and get healthy! |

| The Lounge | Should Parents be Punished for Raising Obese Children? | Mar 21 2009 03:50 (UTC) |
18 |
Original Post by trhawley: Amen to that! While I think that some childhood obesity may stem from neglect, a lot of it occurs because the parents never learned proper nutrition themselves. You can't lead the way to a place you've never been yourself. Also, poverty is a great inducer of obesity. I don't mean to generalize but cheap foods are loaded with poor ingredients, bad fats, sodium and calories. Nutrition is placed on the back burner when a family's main concern is simply filling the belly in the first place. Then again there are also those parents with oldschool parenting like the clean your plate regime. I don't think it is something that should be punished but it can certainly be helped by instilling more nutrition education and programs at schools and possible social programs that help families afford nutritious wholesome groceries instead of KD and Ramen noodles. |

Parents need to realize that they aren't doing their children any favours by constantly bailing them out of trouble. I had to grow up fast for reasons too far too detailed to write here but nonetheless had to learn to get through things on my own and find my own way. I think I am a better person for it. Of course parents should always be there for their kids but by bailing them out of situations that they knowingly fault themselves into is not helping. I think I have a better work ethic and am more self-motivated than many people my age, not to toot my own horn. This is because the only person that I truly have to count on is myself. While others may support me and cheer me on, the only person there to clean up my mess is myself thus, I have learned quite quickly not to make them in the first place.

Hey all, Just popping in before my shower. Sorry I haven't written in in a while. My work placement has me running around like a chicken with its head cut off and now I am sick as a dog... well not THAT sick but I have a terrible head cold. I went to bed last night at 7:30. I didn't log my calories at all yesterday but did log/check in my weight and I ate what I normally do so know I didn't go over. Pook, I have been using your suggestion and taking healthy foods to the courthouse so I am eating during recesses and only having coffee when my boss takes me to the restaurant. Thanks for those tips! They are keeping me on track. I thought I'd start with my stats as of yesterday. Starting Weight: 216.2 Starting Challenge: 210 Last Week's Weight: 205.6 Current Weight: 203.8 That's 1.8#s down from last week and a total of 13.2 lbs lost and hopefully gone forever since starting back on CC a month ago! I will write in again tonight to check in with everyone. Right now I have to get ready for work! |

Original Post by lalabanana: Sorry lalabanana, I didn't mean to offend. Although I realize that it is the weight gain forum, this topic was about desserts and whether you are trying to lose, gain, or maintain I think desserts are an extra and should be a small part if they're a part of it at all. The bulk of your calories whatever your goals are should come from nutritous foods regardless of your goal thus the reason I posted the lower calorie desserts... |

Everyone is different and my problem wasn't/isn't sugar it was caffiene. I know in the past when I kicked the coffee (which by the way I've started drinking again) it took me about a week to get back to normal. Make sure to get plenty of water/fluids as it helps with the pain and decreasing the severity of the headache. Also be mindful of what other stimulants you may be using that can cause your headaches and take a tylenol! I hope you feel better! |

I am glad you figured that out and that it is working for you. I plan much of what I eat and bring meals/snacks with me since I am on the go a lot. I try to log the night before or early morning before I leave my house all the things I plan to eat that day. I make changes to it of course in case I didn't eat something logged or I ate something that I hadn't already included. It is really helpful though to plan it like this because it lets me know how much calories I have left even before I ate something. |

| Weight Loss | Body Fat Percentage?! | Mar 17 2009 17:40 (UTC) |
|
The other answers sound bang on and I think it also depends on where you tend to store fat. For instance a larger chested woman or a woman with a bigger behind might not be able to get down to the really low end of BFP. Like krysty says, where the fat sits plays a really big role in your health. For example, subcutaneous fat, the fat below the skin (the inch(es) you can pinch) is not as dangerous to your health as visceral fat, the fat surrounding your organs and also those who have large protruding bellies are at greater risk for cardiovascular and other health problems. They tend to have more visceral fat and enlarged omentums which also lends itself to another set of health problems. |

| Weight Loss | Minimeals not working | Mar 17 2009 12:38 (UTC) |

Everyone is different, if this isn't working for you then do what does. My mini meals are 3-400 calories at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The satiated feeling is how I feel pretty much constantly. I had to get used to not feeling full at first. In reality though you aren't supposed to eat until you get that stuffed feeling, that means you overate; you are supposed to eat until you are just not hungry anymore. My snacks are 1 - 200 calories each and I eat a meal or snack every two to four hours. I don't think that you have to be hungry to lose weight but if you are stuffed then you probably ate too much. JMO. Oprah had Dr. Oz on her show a couple years ago, the size of the adult stomach, a normal one that hasn't constantly been overfed is roughly the size of both of your fists put together. It was an eye opener. Most people who overeat put more food on their plates and in their stomachs than this at one sitting... I know I was. |

| Weight Gain | anyone eat dessert? | Mar 17 2009 12:29 (UTC) |

I am actually trying to lose, not gain weight but yes I still eat dessert. The desserts I eat are things like no sugar added jello 5 cal/ serving with 3 tablespoons of light cool whip, 33 calories = 38 calories or chocolate pudding (homemade) 80 calories with cool whip, various fruit with fruit dip made with cool whip and danone silhouette yogurt roughly 73 calories for all the dip and it makes about two servings, I also have fudgsicle minis - 45 calories each, real fruit Popsicles - 25 calories each, light ice cream 110 calories per 1/2 cup, 100 calorie oreo snack packs, and then I also bake lower calorie healthy versions of things like banana bread and muffins. I fit one, sometimes two of these "desserts" into my diet pretty much everyday. It really helps with my sweet/ chocolate cravings. Also, fiber 1 oats and peanut butter bars are one of my faves and I would definitely eat these over a chocolate bar any day, they are so yummy. |

I have a cheap one made by starfrit and it is pretty good. I paid about $25.00 for it at Zellers (the Canadian equivalent of America's Target) and it has been pretty reliable within a gram. It weighs food as heavy as 11 lbs and doesn't take much room on the counter. It zeros so I am able to weigh foods as I put them on my plate instead of dirtying the surface of the scale or making extra dirty dishes for myself. It also lets you choose which unit to measure by such as g, oz, kg, and lb. It can be a little finicky at times though when I press the buttons but I think that is because I don't always press hard enough (I don't want to break it) but overall it works pretty great. This is the one I own. http://www.starfrit.com/Products/kitchen/Gadg ets/Kitchen%20Scales/93016.aspx?sc_lang=en |

Hey everyone! Just checking in to say I am not gone! I have been really busy... I am still really busy so not much time to write in but I am wishing everyone well. I started my placement for school today and I will be working for the next two weeks and won't have much time to write in but I will check in when I am home and have a minute or two. It also looks like I will have to be really careful on my diet as I will be spending my time in and out of court and a greasy spoon mom and pops restaurant near the courthouse (I am working for a very busy criminal law firm) so I will be watching closely what I eat...that is when I get the chance! I went six hours between breakfast and lunch because I was sitting in court all morning but I ate good at the restaurant. I stuck to a salad with dressing on the side and dipped my fork in it and I had a slice of whole-grain toast to go with it. I'll make sure to eat good breakfasts and dinners for sure since it looks like I won't be eating much through the day. I hope everyone is doing great sorry I didn't respond to everyone individually. I gotta run! |

I tend to like a snack before bed most of the time and it hasn't hindered my weight loss at all. I am not eating huge meals at nightime because like others I don't like feeling full going to bed but a granola bar, a piece of toast, or a popsicle isn't making me full. |

Original Post by cherry_: Sorry I, didn't catch that you put 50 cal/cup... my bad. I can agree that it is better than drinking a diet soda because it lacks preservatives and other artificial crap that soda has and as far as I can tell the sodium is also not as bad. I was just making a point that just because it has some vitamins doesn't mean it's good for you as the amount of vitamins are very little and the sugar content per bottle is high (but still better than even regular soda). Beer is loaded in B vitamins and antioxidants but we all know that isn't the best drink because of the alcohol content and sugars. If you like the taste and enjoy the product go ahead and drink it. I have no doubt that you can be fit, lose, weight and get healthy while drinking it. Heck, you can have almost anything in moderation and lose weight, get healthy, and be fit including alcohol. I'm also not putting the drink or anyone who drinks Vitamin Water down I am just saying don't believe the the stuff about health and energy that Coca Cola likes to convince you of with all the pretty packaging, and hype, hype, and more hype. Just my opinion. Cheers!
