| Made it through the marathon! It was the most awesome, difficult, painful thing I have ever done - and I am ready to sign up for next year! wrm- I have to admit I didn't stick to my pace like I should have. Things felt so good at the beginning, I just went with it and shaved 9:40 off my half marathon PR. I am ecstatic about that! Things were still going real well until mile 16 - then wham - my hips locked up. This is where the painful part comes in. I alternated fast walking and slow running (I call it the marathon shuffle), literally willing myself forward by mile 20. Somwhere between mile 20 and 24, the 4:45 pace group passed me, then the 5:00 group - and I thought about trying to maintain a pace with them - but just couldn't. I was still so happy about the halfway point time and just thrilled to still be moving forward, that my goal of sub-5:00 not happening didn't put me in any despair. At mile 24, the clock read 5:03 and change - and something within me realized I could finish in sub-5:30:00. I don't know where I got the energy; I don't know how I got my body moving into a full run again - just sheer willpower and determination - kept repeating that mantra of "Pain is weakness leaving the body" - passed up the last two hydration stations because I knew if I stopped, I would STOP -- and ran across the finish line in 5:26:11. *I was 1480/1796 and 42/59 in my age group. It was an incredible experience from beginning to end -- and I thank all of you who helped me get to that race through your training advice and encouragement. If you have not run the United States Air Force Marathon - it is one worth running. It was very well organized and all hydration stations were well stocked. There were plenty of support personnel to assist runners in distress (I saw at least four ambulances coming to cart runners off - and several medical tents were set up throughout the course.). The people of the city of Fairborn were out cheering us on as we ran through the main part of town. At the beginning of the race, there were flyovers by at least five different aircraft, including the F-22 Raptor. The course has some hills, but nothing extreme - and part of the course includes running down the same runway on which the F-16s take off and land. My muscles still hurt, my arm is still chafed from my tank top, and I am still a little red from the sun -- but I would do it all again - and plan to next year. My next question - how long should I rest before I resume running again? |

| 3.1 miles for Monday and 2 miles for Tuesday. Last bootcamp class was last night for the week. No running today :-(
Don't know what to do with myself - I'll just keep storing up that energy for Saturday's marathon run. I am so excited - I plan to have a blast on that course. Know it will be a challenge, but I plan to enjoy every minute, even during the tough, hard to get through parts. skinny_kitty - great job on your 1/2 ironman! manta - good luck on your half marathon this weekend! Son had a PR at his home meet last night. He's trying to get his 5K to sub-20, and came in at 20:17. It is so cool to see all those middle school through high school kids out there running for all it's worth. Varsity Boys and varsity girls both took second place in their respective team races. Son ran in a local 5K race on Saturday, then ran a 5 mile trail run on Sunday as part of a relay team in an adventure race on Sunday, so his PR last night was unexpected. |

| wrm - It just seems fitting that you were the one to break the tape!
Congratulations everyone!! Looking forward to the next challenge. My marathon miles will get to be included in the next go-round. I did stay home and sleep in today - son had a good race, but no new PR. There were only 96 people (runners and walkers), so chances would have been good for me to place in my age group - however, I want to be focused and energized for next Saturday's milestone. Happy Running :-) |

| Wow, thanks for all the input! My son's cross country team is hosting the race as part of a community festival and a team fundraiser, so honestly, I'd probably be out there pushing myself for a faster time, looking for that new PR. Have to show the young'uns that the old folks can still hit the pavement running!! And I'd be doing that after coming off an eight hour shift the night before (6:00 pm to 2:30 am, don't get home and to bed until 4 am), so I'd be running on little sleep to boot.
I'll be better off to stay home and sleep - I'll have done an eight mile run on Friday, my last long run. I've just come to love running so much, it's difficult sometimes to take that step back and think about the long term. I did turn down participating in an adventure race on Sunday this weekend due to the marathon. My son may be running in that one as part of a team competition; however, his coach has to clear his participation, as that would mean three of the high school's varsity runners would be on different adventure race teams. Have to watch the potential for injury during the season! This is my son's first year running cross country, but his martial arts training has served him well. - he's a black belt in tae kwon do. He has the mental endurance needed to train hard - and he is able to listen and follow through on his coaches' instructions. It's great being able to talk with my son about running and celebrating one another's accomplisments - and now there's competition for getting to the latest issue of Runner's World and Running Times in the household! Thanks again - I really value your advice. I've learned so much since finding this thread last March. Hoping the thread will continue on in some fashion once we have made it around the world. |

| 3.1 miles for yesterday. Taper called for three miles, but it somehow seemed more fitting to go the 5K distance. Ran an easy first mile, then ran a 10 minute second mile (that's pushing it for me!), then finished out the rest at an 11:00 minute/mile pace. Goal after marathon is to work on speed.
wrm - I have an opportunity to run a 5K this weekend. Is this a good idea with the marathon a week away? 174.7 miles to go! |

| First, thanks all for your comments. I have not had much time to get on the computer, so I have not been able to respond. WW- think lazy river for my canoe venture! Plus, my son went along and didn't want to sit in the middle and do nothing, so he sat in my usual seat in the front and paddled. I tried to paddle in rhythm with him, but everytime I tried to do that, his paddling lost any semblance of a cadence. It was just his second time out - he was driving his father and me crazy trying to work around him, so I finally just sat in the middle and enjoyed the ride! 12 mile run yesterday. Dewpoint was 70, but it was cloudy and there was a good breeze/light wind blowing, so it was quite comfortable. Much better run than last week - actually pushed my pace, particularly on the hills - and if I had gone 13.1 miles, I would have bested my half marathon PR. Rain started on the last half mile and felt great!! Lesson learned from last week after reflection - too much junky food in leads to junky performance. I think the fast food and full fat ice cream I enjoyed in quantities last week really wrecked my digestive system. Have eaten clean this week - no GI problems - was able to follow normal nutrition plan on my run, and thoroughly enjoyed my time on the road! 346.55 miles to go! |

| 5 miles for yesterday. Took Monday off as I had the opportunity to get the canoe out on the river. Can't pass that up! It's only the second time we've had the canoe out this summer :-( I've been so focused on the marathon training that it's left little time for anything else. | |||

| Disappointing run yesterday. Goal was a 20 mile long run; however, the morning started out with some GI issues. Had to make first pit stop before the 2.5 mile mark. Made it to the next stop at just shy of 8 miles. Didn't take in my usual number of gels and electrolytes, as I didn't want to upset my system any more than it already was. Well, I tanked at 10.5 miles. Tried to push for at least 13.1, but by mile 10.5 my pace was down to 4.5 mph, and nothing I tried could get the speed up. Walked another 2.25 miles trying to get started on a run again every half mile or so, then threw in the towel and called it a day. Have been feeling "off" all day. Contemplated calling out from work, but really need the money, so sucked it up and went in. Hoping it's just some 24 hour bug and I'll be in good shape for the party we're hosting on Sunday. So glad I did that 20 miler a few weeks ago!
Wishing everyone a great holiday weekend!! |

| 5.5 miles out at the park for me yesterday. Two bootcamp workout partners decided to head out there to run after our class, so off I went. The temperature was pleasant, even if the humidity was a little high - so it sure beat getting the miles in on the treadmill. | |||

| 5.5 miles for me for yesterday. Had to split running time - ran 3 miles, then had to pick son up from cross country practice, then had bootcamp for an hour, then ran another two and a half miles. It's a challenge working around his hectic after school activity schedule. | |||

| wrm - thanks for that last post. It's comforting to know the veteran runners have a tough time running out there on those high dewpoint days too. Dewpoint was high yesterday for my run - and boy it really hit me hard, especially when trying to push it on the uphills - and there are a lot of uphills on my long run route. Thanks again for your help in planning out my last six weeks of training - two down, four to go - and it's going well. | |||

| 6.8 miles for Wednesday - four on the treadmill before bootcamp and 2.8 out at the park after bootcamp. At least Wednesday's boot camp was an hour of stretching. We all looked like the walking wounded after Tuesday's class! I'm still a little sore and it's Friday.
15 mile long run today - very warm and humid. My pace on the uphills was much slower than I wanted. Did have a lady pull over to tell me to be careful as there was a man in a van pulled over on the side of the road up ahead. I thanked her for keeping an eye out for me, then explained it was my husband serving as my mobile hydration station. I live in a rural area, and people do tend to pay attention to things that look out of place. I stop in the local convenience store halfway through my long runs to make a restroom pit stop, and after over a month of watching me do this, some of the local older farmers who hang out got curious enough to ask my husband what I was up to today. Our local realtor was also in, and he was the one explaining about my marathon and my husband helping with the long runs. Turns out his wife is in my bootcamp class (I never made the connection before), so he was up to speed on my progress. The school bus drivers beep and wave as they go by in the morning too. I feel like it's important for me to complete this marathon, not just for me, but for all of the people in my community who have been cheering me on through this whole process. I don't want to let them down! |

| Missed Monday's run due to son's cross country schedule and the need to get him an appointment for a physical.
8.8 miles for yesterday. Ran 5.4 miles at a 5.5 mph pace, then kicked things up to 5.7 mph and ran 5K in 32:55, almost three minutes less than my first 5K time in Feb. 2007 (35:48). Slowly, I am getting a little bit faster. Did have to kick things up to about 6.0 mph the last two minutes to get that new time! Then I finished out the rest of the distance at 5.5 mph. Bootcamp class followed my run. Did 450 squats, 450 situps, and 225 pushups in just less than an hour. Had to do them in sets of 10 squats, 10 situps, and 5 pushups. My partner was able to make to 400 squats, 400 situps, and 200 pushups. Our goal was 500/500/250 per person, so I fell a little short. Good workout though! |

| 10 miles for yesterday. Husband dropped me off in a town ten miles from our house, and I ran home. Lots of hills - good training. The best part was, after running 20 miles last Friday, that I was able to say, "It's just 10 miles today," and the distance didn't seem the least bit daunting! The ten miles I ran yesterday was the second half of the 20 from last week - and I am hoping that when I do the 20 again in a couple of weeks, that my body remembers how good it felt on that stretch of road. Just playing mindgames with myself. Have to amuse myself now and again. | |||

| jfk - I understand the psychological battle with the treadmill. I run my base miles during the week mostly on the treadmill, as the weather has been too hot and humid. My excuse in the winter, of course, is that it's too cold. My longest time is two hours - and I play all sorts of mind games to get through it. I try to make the most of it by working on intervals and inclines, since I can more closely monitor what I'm doing.
Yesterday was 5.5 miles around the loop at the park. One of my bootcamp partners likes to run out there and enjoys having some company. He's always way ahead of me - he tries to stay ahead and I try to catch up, so it gives both of us more of a workout. My 16 yr. old son has caught the running bug. He joined the cross country team last week, and the coach says he may be running with the varsity team. He's a black belt in tae kwon do and takes classes twice a week, as well as doing bootcamp classes twice a week - so he's in great shape already. He also joined marching band this year, so he has to split his afterschool practice times between marching band and XC. Maybe he'll join me in running a marathon sometime in the future. So glad he's not a couch potato!! |

| wrm - thanks so much for the schedule. I've got it down in my training log so I can get things lined out for these last six weeks. (I began keeping training logs when I began training for my half marathon last April.) I appreciate your taking the time to help those of us new to this endeavor. Wishing you the best on your race.
jfk - good luck with your 1/2 ironman! joyfulake - congrats on conquering that hill!! I think that's one of the best feelings in the world - being able to run uphill without stopping! wili - thanks for your comments. This is a learn as I go experience!! As I look ahead to the marathon - I find myself thinking beyond that. "If I can run a marathon, could I train for a 50 miler?" Such thoughts would have been incomprehensible a year and a half ago - at that point, I was having a tough time envisioning myself as a runner. So here I am, wondering if there's a part of me that has totally tipped over the edge - but I love finding out just how capable and resilient my body can be. How fun to keep raising the bar - and how fortunate I am to have found a supportive community of runners with which to share my journey and rely upon for the nitty gritty info you can't find in the printed text. |

| 20 miles for me today - new distance PR - I also understand why people hit the wall at that distance! From mile 18 to 19, I think was doing more of a shuffle than a run. Was able to get back to getting the feet off the ground for the last mile - the fact it's the last mile is a great motivator! Husband kept me company (driving along in the pickup) for the last five miles at my request. Looked like the country version of the Volvo commercial with the mom on the bike, I'm sure! Did take an ice bath afterward, then stretched after legs warmed up again, then took a warm shower about an hour after stretching. Legs are sore, but I'll be able to put my eight hours in at work tonight.
wrm and other marathoners: My marathon is 09-20-08. Should I try to get in any longer distance runs before then or should I try another 20 miler ot two? I schedule my long distance run increases every two weeks, so it was two weeks ago that I ran 18. This is my first marathon, so this level of training is very new to me. Also, any advice on a taper schedule would be much appreciated. Right now, I run about 5-5.5 miles on Mon., Tues, and Wed., and alternate Fridays with a 5-10 mile run or an increasing long distance run. My main goal is to finish the race -- and to do so without doing permanent damage to my body parts. :-) Thanks in advance for your help. |

| In elementary school, I wanted to be a marine biologist, an archaeologist, or a worker in the Peace Corps. After high school, I majored in English Lit (high school English teacher), then switched to nursing (love science and teaching). While on sabbatical from nursing school, husband and I found out we were expecting first child. School was on east coast; we were on west coast - so nursing degree was not completed. When second child was three, I began work substitute teaching in the local school system. When second child was five, I went back to college and earned a degree in education. Taught five years at the elementary (4th grade-all subjects) and middle school levels (7th grade - life science), then left to help husband run his restaurant (one of his dreams). Business tanked after two years, so took job at Zappos.com warehouse packing orders for shipment (needed a paycheck and health insurance). **Cool place to work, by the way!! Found another teaching job, this time in adult education, teaching literacy and GED students. So now I teach four days and week, and still pack orders at Zappos.com two nights a week. Life is good! I have time to workout and train for a marathon, and my two jobs are so different from one another that it keeps life interesting. |

| 5.5 miles for yesterday. Found out the course at the park is 1.4 miles, not 1.25 miles as I had been told. Used my Forerunner foot pod (which I calibrated on a school track last week) to measure the distance. It was hot and humid, but I was running with a friend - and neither of us would think of quitting and letting the other person down. Took a couple electrolyte tablets before the run and drank some Gatorade during the run.

This is my longest long run to date. Goal is to complete a 20 mile run two weeks from today. Gives me two weeks to decide on my route.
