| Weight Loss | Stop, Take a Breath, and Re-evaluate | Oct 27 2007 13:01 (UTC) |

| I suppose I see both sides of it. However, I tend to agree with gdharris more. Weight seems to be such an arbitrary number when it is used as a gage for overall health. . . . alone. There are so many other factors that contribute to weight that don't necessarily refer to "fat" per se. For example, bone density, height, muscle mass, hydration levels, all effect your weight, that don't reflect fat density. I believe that measurements, such as waist circumference, are better measures of improving health, in addition to others such as body fat percentage, and BMI. Just looking at weight alone is such an incomplete picture. Calorie count is a great site, but I wish there were places where you could enter measures such as the aforementioned, other than just weight alone. | |||

| Look at my pic. . . . is that an oval shape? I definitely have the double chin thing going though. It always seems to be there even though I've reached my goal weight, and BMI is on the lower side of the healthy range. | |||
| Vegetarian | Feeding a Vegan for Thanksgiving | Oct 10 2007 04:53 (UTC) |

| Ah the holidays . . . I can't believe they're here again already! There are so many brilliant suggestions here that I believe you're pretty well prepared. So, perhaps I could provide some motivational support via example? One of my girlfriends hosted a thanksgiving at her apartment for the first time last year. Among her guests, she had your standard American-average-joe, vegetarian, vegan, and vegetarian/gluten-free diets represented. Talk about a balancing act! According to her account, it all went well. Although she cooked a ton of food, there was hardly any left over! She said even the meat-eaters were trying the "alternative" dishes for the first time. Being that it was her first Thanksgiving she hosted, and that she doesn't cook very often, her success hopefully inspires us all. Good luck! |

| Thanks for sharing this. . . Being that lentils are so unbelievably healthy (protein, fiber, micronutrients), I so want to be a fan of them. Unfortunately the only good recipe I've found so far after much hunting are soup recipes, which can become quite boring after a while. So, if anyone else has tasty lentil recipes that aren't soup, please do share! | |||

| The reason salads are more expensive isn't that the companies have some evil plan to make America fat. It's economics. Many people seem to forget that part of what makes America great is that it is a capitalist economy. Not enough people buy salads to make it profitable for fast food companies to offer it at a cheaper price. As far as I've heard, the extra taxes put on alcohol and cigarette sales have done nothing significant to lower their usage. I don't see any reason to believe it would be any different with unhealthy fast food. | |||

| I wish I could say mine was something super healthy such as beans and legumes, but I'm a cheese freak! I just love it! In fact, I could probably go vegan rather than just lacto-veggie if it weren't for that. . . oh well, good source of calcium! | |||

| Thank you everyone for sharing your stories here! I'm also 5'6," started here at 155, and the most I've weighed was 157. I currently weigh 141 exactly with a goal of 135. As far as I can remember, I tend to generally hover in the low 140s, so we'll see if my body feels healthy at 135. According to the way to check your body frame on this website I have a small frame, however I also have pretty long, "piano" fingers. I have been told I have more of a medium frame by other people. I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian for about 2 years, and I'm a proud Navy wife. Good luck to everyone and keep up the good work either losing or maintaining. . . ana_olivia, please please go see your mentor. you're much too young to be heading down the road you seem to be going. I know it's hard, but please do try to eat more. You are a beautiful girl who is still developing and you NEED your nutrition. Thank you for sharing your story with us and we'll be thinking of you! | |||
| Motivation | for those of us with less than 15 lbs to lose... | Feb 08 2007 22:40 (UTC) |

| I think the most frustrating thing for me is the fact that the last few pounds are coming off sooooooo ssllllooowwwwlllyyyy. When I started here, I was consistently losing 1-2 lbs. a week. Now, if I lose a pound, I have to wait 2-3 weeks it seems to see it go! I've even increased my exercise. . . my Husband and I now swim laps in the morning Monday through Friday in addition to my daily yoga practice. Further, now that my exercise has increased, my appetite has also. This makes it harder to stay within my daily calorie allowance, particularly since I'm including more protein now since I exercise more. It's very hard to find healthy protein sources that are vegetarian friendly that are also reasonable in calories (ex. almonds, beans, natural peanut butter, tofu). Before I know it I'm almost to my calorie allowance and it's not even dinnertime yet! *sigh* | |||

| After coming home from the gym, I had a huge craving for croissants. I stopped on the way home at a fast food joint and got a breakfast sandwich . . . and regretted it. The amount of fat, particularly saturated fat, was apalling! However, it's ok to have a slip every once in a while, just so that you get right back on track as soon as you realize what happened ;) | |||

| I've been taking ortho tri-cyclen since I was 16 or so due to cycle problems and acne. I don't know it this helps you but I found I gained around 10 lbs. at first over the first couple of months, but then it came off after 4 months or so. My doc said that it reacts in different ways with different women, but generally speaking if you do gain weight at first, it will come off once your body gets adjusted. My friend finds she has more trouble keeping off weight with depo shots than the pill, and she has since tried the implants and seems to prefer those in terms of weight gain, or lack of. I guess it's just a matter of trial and error unfortunately! Good luck, and congratulations on your baby! : ) | |||

| so very easy to give in to the not-so-smart cravings and you did it! *applause* One trick that my Husband came up with when those cravings are at their absolute worst and you feel yourself giving in to them, he compromises. So for example if he's ravenous for chinese fried rice, and no healthy substitute will do, he orders the smallest portion they serve and split that in half, eating one portion then and saving the rest for later or the next day, so that way the "damage" is kept at a minimum. : ) | |||

| Since it is wintertime I've also found it hard for me to keep up my water drinking. However, I've found that drinking decaf green tea or herbal tea throughout the day is easy for me to do because it's nice and warm and it's not so bland as plain water. | |||

| Roj>>> Looks like you've got a lot of brothers and sisters here, including myself.
ix>>>, what's your secret to avoiding the "front?" I've been trying to get rid of mine too, but so far to no avail. It's so easy for me to put other people's feelings (or how I perceive them to be, more accurately) before mine, and quite frankly I'm sick of it, particularly when I do it for people who I know don't care about me and quite frankly I don't particularly like anyway! *sorry for the run-on sentence, y'all*
nubiker>>> my aunt gave me that response when I told her about my depression too. that is soooooo annoying. my stepmom made a comment somewhat to the effect of "those who want to commit suicide just want to take the easy way out." my mom and I both told her that we both hoped that she would never come to a place in her life where she could really understand what it means to feel that way, because clearly she didn't understand!
Anyway, I've found that for me, working with my dogs or just getting myself to do a simple, quiet task, such as painting my chicken coop, gives me a little boost in energy and mood. I mean, I'm not smiling ear to ear mind you, but it just takes the edge off a little bit in a healthy way. Hang in there everyone! |

| an addition of +.5 has been consistently on the scale since thanksgiving, so I suppose that's what I gained. . . not bad considering I had a lot of sodium and pie!!! : ) | |||
| Weight Loss | sodium question | Nov 20 2006 21:27 (UTC) |
|
| my Dad recently had a stroke, and that was in part caused by his hypertension. Hypertension (high blood pressure) runs in my family, so now we are both on the DASH diet (dietary approaches to stopping hypertension), which mostly is concerned with limiting sodium to around 1500 milligrams daily. I'm here to tell you, processed and fast food are RIDDLED with sodium!!! I guess it's because it's a really cheap preservative? Anyway, we've been having to cook everything at home now because it seems like anything processed or pre-made has hella sodium. . . it's ridiculous!!! It seems like the biggest offender is bread, which explains why subway sandwiches are so high in sodium. : / | |||

| lol, story of my life! Fortunately my body fat tends to distribute itself relatively evenly across my body, which is why a lot of people don't believe me that I weigh what I do (started at 155, down to 148 currently). However, even when I was more athletic, I have ALWAYS had thunder thighs! : ( | |||

| all good goals calorie counters, gave me some ideas! I too, want to focus on portion control, healthier substitutions, and so on. However, I really want to focus on keeping up with my exercise, no matter how busy it gets. They say exercise helps with stress. . . isn't this one of the most stressful times of the year?! Good luck with your goals everyone! | |||
| Weight Loss | ...water | Nov 20 2006 21:04 (UTC) |
|
| something to think about. . . . my nutrition professor (who's a Registered Dietician) reminded us that there is lots of water in things we eat too, particularly fruits and veggies, cooked brown rice, etc. So, although it is good to try and drink as much water as you can, don't beat yourself up if you don't drink the recommended 6-8 glasses or whatever it is nowadays. She says that's the volume the body needs daily, and that volume can also be obtained through food. All the more reason to eat your fruits and veggies! BTW, I happen to love the propel water. . . it does have some sweeteners and maybe 5 calories or so I think, but the tap water where we live isn't so great and we haven't got time to install a filtration system yet. : ) | |||

| hi! I'm 5'6" medium frame and started at 155. I'm now down to 148 and my goal is 135. It depends on a lot of individual factors as far as if you can lose 5 lbs by december. But, I lost 5 lbs. in less than a month so if I can do it, I'm sure lots of people, including you can do it! | |||

| I might be wrong, but aren't the values for calorie expenditure on this site supposed to be guidelines? It seems to me that there would be all kinds of individual differences that they couldn't possibly account for, such as resting metabolic rate, muscle mass, gender difference, and so on. I would go with your heart rate monitor as it would most likely be more accurate for you. ; ) | |||
| Weight Loss | Fiber??? | Nov 08 2006 16:09 (UTC) |

| I don't really like the idea of fiber supplements myself, particularly if it's just to help you feel fuller. What I do is drink lots of water or herbal tea (at least one full glass before a meal or when I feel hungry) and be sure to add lots of natural fiber sources like whole grain and lots of fruits and veggies. That way, I get the added benefit of the vitamins and minerals that come with the fiber. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the fiber supplements have as much nutritional value (in terms of vitamins and minerals) as natural sources of fiber. | |||

I am happy because I am eating healthy on a consistent basis and has helped me lose 7 lbs! Therefore, I will keep in mind that eating healthy has benefits on its own, and I will also drink lots of water (like canadianchick ; ) |
