You should get to a point where you are having one or more everyday. It can be several things. I would definitely start taking probiotics. You can buy them at whole foods or any health food store. I prefer in capsule form by a brand called 'JARRO'. These don't require any refrigeration and are excellent. They have a special coating on them so the bacteria survives the stomach acid and gets the colon where you need it.  You need the good friendly bacteria for digestion. A lack of it and constipation becomes regular. Another reason some people have problems is a lack of good stomach acid for digestion. Before each meal, take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with 1/4 cup of water. Be sure to rinse your mouth with a mouthfull of water afterward as the cider can be hard on tooth enamel. Another trick is drinking a cup of coffee in the morning. It can increase stomach acid production by almost 400% Which for some people isn't as much as it sound as they don't have a lot to begin with.

Fitness Whey Protein side effects? Nov 13 2008

Honestly I'm lactose intolerant and that has never happened to me or anyone else I know. Even if you have stomach allergies, I bet anything it wasn't the powder. Try it in just water. Yes, I'm the only one suggesting to try it again. Try a smaller dose. You can practically live off the stuff for a while so if a smaller dose IN WATER  doesn't affect you, try a full scoop then beyond. Honestly it could have been a gastro intestinal virus issue or something else like food poisoning, or whatever. Whey protien is a good way to supplement your protien intake.

Fitness Ab flab won't go away!!!! Nov 13 2008

It depends on your bodyfat percentage unless you've had kids then that's a different story. But assuming you haven't, several things to look at. If your body fat is too high, you will still have a flabby midsection. If you are doing excesive cardio and your protien intake is too low, you will have a washed out flabby midsection. Eat 1.3 - 1.5gms of protien per lb of body weight and if you are doing high intensity cardio, do low intensity for an hour 4-5 days a week along with resistance training. Also contrary to what some people say, Dont do ab workouts more than twice a week. Keep your carbs moderate to low and you will see a difference. Also, try brushing your stomach. Take a brush that doesn't have  rought bristles, and brush your stomach everyday before taking a shower or whenever. Brush from your lower abs towars your heart. It draws blood there, and tightens the skin. Female bodybuilders with this problem use this trick.

Fitness Difference Between Soy Protein and Whey Protein Nov 13 2008

The main difference is their amino acid profiles. the biological value of whey is much higher than soy. Soy is crap. Very little of it has any real use towards building or maintaining muscle which is metobolically active. It is good in chinese food though..

Weight Loss Do you limit carbs at dinner? Oct 28 2008

I think it's a great idea to limit carbs at dinner time. I just have a zero carb protien shake for dinner now, but I eat six times a day. I'm totallly not starving. I throw that rule out in the weekends though. I just stick to it Monday thru Friday.

Weight Loss question about days off!!! Jun 26 2008

Depending on your body type and genetics, 4-7 days a week of cardio is doable. Again there are other factors to consider. Sounds like your diet is clean. I would eat up on your off day on one meal but not go crazy, but definitely be relaxed about it. Yeah you'll weight up to 4lbs heavier the next day, but it's mostly sodium weight.

If you do cardio in the morning on an empty stomach it can increase the fat burning by 200%. Then you could afford to eat an extra 100 - 200 calories more a day as long as the scale keeps moving.  Your body is just adjusting and of course you won't be on a 1200cal diet forever.

There are diff variables to consider. Six days is fine, but are you getting enough sleep? Also it's quite common when your body is adjusting to a new routine, AND it's common when on calorie restriction. On that day off  are you uping your calories? And what are you eating that sums the 1200cal a day? All those things will have an affect on your energy levels. It's 1200 cal of what?

Weight Loss Low carb Diet ... Jun 24 2008

Low carb is the way to go. 40/40/20 carbs, protien, fat and you're on your way. It really works, I lost about 37lbs this way, but I also did calorie restriction and cardio 4-6 days a week and weights 4 days a week.

Ok, whoever said that eating doesn't do anything for your metabolism really doesn't know what they are talking about. Second, breakfast is just that. Breaking a fast. You are in a fasted state when you wake up and need to break the fast. Just because you may not be used to eating in the morning, or you are not hungry is no excuse to keep the body in a catabolic state. And food is metabolic for the body. Anytime the body has to work to digest, it raises your metabolism and walking around the block doesn't keep it up. It only contributes to burning calories at the time that you are walking. There are studies that show that people that eat breakfast live longer.

The truth is that low carb diets work. I don't care what anybody says, and it's not unhealthy. It is if all you eat is sausage and cheese all day long, but it does work. I would start with a 40/40/20 diet and then take it from there. That's 40% protien, 40% carbs, and 20% fats. If you don't get results from that, then go to 50% protien and 30% carbs. In that  percentage base don't include leafy greans like spinach and stuff. Once you achieve goal weight you can change the ratios and increase your carb intake to a maintenance level by increments of 5%.

Since you didn't post anything else about exercise, your diet might be sutible if you haven't been exercising, but need to start. You need to create a healthy daily deficit of 500 - 1000 cal. If you haven't been exercising that alone will change everything. Not to mention your daily maintenance caloric intake will change and increase over time. If you find yourself dropping over 2 lbs a week after the inicial week or 2 your calories are too low. Also, break up your meals over 5 meals instead of 2 or 3 if you haven't been already. That is a sure fire way to lose weight, as the smaller meals eaten every 3 hours keep your bodys metabolism working

Weight Loss should i abandon my current diet? Jan 04 2008

I personally am not a big believer in 'shakes' for a diet or a lifestyle change. I've known people to do it and just eat one meal of solid food at night and have maintained their weight. It is proven that solid foods  are what get the metabolism going because of the digestion involved, and of course manipulating macronutrient ratios. There could be several reasons for the 'larger' legs. Because you are cutting out a lot of solid foods, your metabolism is shifting so it could be getting more sluggish causing you to gain weight, or because of the same reasons causing you to retain water, etc.  I would got back to all solid foods introducing it  slowly over the course of a week and see how your body reacts. Try to stay away from high sodium filled or sugary foods, so you can measure your results accurately.

Weight Loss Calories is it? Nov 29 2007

I'm sorry, but a calorie is NOT a calorie! If one person ate 2000 calories of fat, vs 2000 calories of carbs, vs 2000 calories of protien, you would see over time 3 different body compositions. Each one has different effects on the body. Not even mentioning that that there a 3 different main body types, and they each react differently to foods. Some people are carb sensitive, and a crap load of carbs and fat would not allow them to lose weight even if they are working out moderately. ALSO we haven't even touch on keeping blood sugars stable which a key element in weight loss. You can't do that cause you body will release a lot of insulin and just store fat. You are better off with a good balanced diet. 40%protien, 40% carb, and 20% of your calories from good fats spread out over 5 small meals a day.

For weight gain eat 50% carbs, 30% protien, and 20% fats. Start at 12 times your weight in calories and take it from there. If you arent' gaining then add an additional 200calories a week till you see the scale move at a half a pound a week. If you start to gain more than that cut the calories back to where you aren't gaining more than a half a pound a week for muscle gains. Being that you are a female, you really can't do better than a half a pound of muscle a week, and that is assuming you are lifting weights, mostly lower reps in the 6-10 range, and aren't doing a whole lot of cardio. Doing more than 3 sessions of cardio a week will hurt your gains.

Stress causes a body to release a hormone called cortisol and that slows the metabolism and cause abdominal weight gain. Water weight is usually do to not drinking enough water, and sodium retention from consuming too much sodium.

You need to eat closer to 11 times your bodyweight in calories. I would increase at 150-200cal a week till you reach that. Also, you didn't mention that you do any cardio other than that one session of swimming. You should do a good 4-7 sessions a week of cardio at 45-60min a session. Start with 4 a week and see how that works for you.

I work out 5-6 days a week and get up at 4 or 4:30am to do it. I have to be in bed by 9pm. It's paid off, and doing cardio on an empty stomach sure helps to burn the fat.

Weight Loss Cheat Day? Sep 07 2007

Cheat days or I should say cheat meals work for some and are counter productive for others, simply cause some people after having one, cannot control their appetites. At only 1200 calories everyday, yeah you need one. Eat up but I personally try to keep it to a cheat meal, not a whole day. You can get plenty of calories in one desirable meal.

You need to look at 3 main factors: diet, cardio, resistance training.

I personally have experienced where I did the cardio and resistance training, but because my diet was crap half the day, I didn't experience fat loss. I'd check the diet. Eat every 2 1/2 to 3 hours for a total of 5-6 meals a day. Spread your calories over the day. Eat 40%protien, 40% carb, and 20% fat. You can have 2 days a week where you lower your calories by 20% for faster fat loss

I have lost plenty of weight doing this, and have seen it work for many females.  I would definitely do the cardio 5 days a week every week till you reach your goal, and do weight training at least 3 days a week.

If the scale is moving cause you ate high sodium foods, but goes back down after stopping for 2-3 days, then your maintenance calorie intake is fine. It's just water weight.
