i am a huge hummus fan and it's made from chickpeas (garbanzo beans) and tahini so it's pretty good for you too, and not as acidic as salsa. i recommend cedar's hummus with tahini ie. their original flavor. it's all over the east coast and i've found it in whole foods stores in other parts of the country too.

if, by some chance, you get ahold of a different brand and don't like it.... save your judgement! all hummus (humus) is not created equal.

that said, enjoy! it's great stuff.

try the Kashi brand frozen meals (new product). I'm particularly fond of Cilantro Lime and Southwest Style Chicken.

I want to wear a size 2/4 again on bottom. I currently wear a 6/8. Technically this means going from 142 to 125ish though I guess now I don't really care about the numbers so much as how I look and feel.

hey sherhugs-

i'm in a similar position to you as i have a gluten intolerance (in addition to being intolerant of sugar, dairy, fungi, peanuts, and corn). why don't you try eating gluten free bread in order to get some whole grain carbs? it's very important to incorporate these into your diet in some way. if you're dead set against it or don't have access to them, try eating some of the more high-carb veggies like sweet potatoes, red potatoes, and squashes. no need to eat tons of bread or high-carb veggies but having a bit on the side will really help you out.

also it sounds like you need to up your calories a bit. how much are do you burn when you work out and what is your average cal burn each day? creating a deficit of more than 800 cals will cause your body to hold onto its nutrients while reducing your lean muscle tissue... so calculate away, don't be afraid of gaining a couple of pounds while your body readjusts, and then (hopefully) watch with glee as your plateau beats a retreat.

i love rice and almond milk! shop around to find the ones you prefer (most everyone i talk to likes different brands). a good thing to remember is that they won't taste like anything else you drink so don't expect them to... rather, enjoy them for what they are. I recommend Blue Diamond Almond Breeze and the Rice Dream brand, though there are others too that I've had and liked. There is also oat milk, which is an unusual flavor that I enjoy from time to time.

kwietro01- i just added you to my friend list because we're on a very similar path! i'm 22 and 142lbs. Started college at 118-122 and gained about 35 in total by end of 2nd year. I've been fighting to get it off since then.... you can do it! we can both do it! everyone in this club can do it!!
Weight Loss I'll be honest here- I'm in starvation mode... Oct 28 2006

spearmint-

try to find a protein powder that you like. my favorite is a whey protein (80/scoop) which i mix with almond milk (60-80/8oz) for a total of 140-160 per glass. you need to get more calories and this would be a way to increase your protein levels too.

i, too, was in starvation mode for a long time and recently discovered what i was doing to myself. it can be hard to let go of the idea that you always need to eat less to lose weight but i'm confident that you have the inner strength to do this. (also, i've gained a couple of pounds in the last week since upping my calorie intake to a healthy level. however, i know that this will level out soon as my body readjusts to having enough nutrients. so don't be scared of those couple of pounds!)

i used to be one of those people! well, i was never really skinny but quite trim and just so athletic that my muscle burned up all the calories i consumed and i never thought about it. then i got to college, started eating late at night, stopped exercising and gained 30 pounds in less than 9 months. yikes. my mom used to warn me that my metabolism would change eventually and i'd just laugh her off but now i know she was right!

try to find something that can take the place of the sugar... such as savoring a yummy apple or a banana or even a piece of whole grain toast with some jam (perhaps pumpkin butter to be seasonally appropriate?). another trick that works for me is to suck on a piece of lemon or lime, or try buying a small bottle of lemon juice concentrate (not sweetened, but the real deal like R.W.Knudsen or the like) and adding a little to your water. additionally, some people are deficient in trace minerals like chromium and magnesium which makes them crave sugar (this happened to me). luckily, sea vegetables are a great source of these micronutrients so try to find some snack size pieces of Nori, which are very tasty and not at all gross like dulse can be.

good luck!

bigtwinky- that might be the solution, eh? i drink a protein shake in the morning with breakfast so maybe i should double it up before practice. thanks!

(side note: i'm still amazed that in order to lose weight i need to eat MORE because it just runs counter to all the standard "diet" advice out there. in reading CC, though, it seems like a number of other people have this problem too. i'm certainly not in danger of ana tendencies, know a fair bit about nutrition, and eat great food... never would have guessed i've been starving myself!)

anyone have thoughts/advice on the distribution of workouts part of my original question?

thanks to clairelaine and bigtwinky for the help thus far. :)

clairelaine: thanks for the input- that's very helpful.

My challenge is not one of getting enough veggies, fruits, and protein (I'm always way over recommended servings) but rather an issue of getting nutrients from other important sources such as whole grains. I am wheat intolerant and don't do well with processed grains in general regardless of whether they are yummy whole grains or refined and white. I am learning to incorporate brown rice and quinoa into my diet. I already eat stove top cooked oatbran and can't eat most packaged products because I'm intolerant of sugar (including fruits like bananas) apples and berries are ok though.

So, any suggestions for options??

kipp- no! while it's great that you want to load up on veggies, you should not eat too many calories just because they come from low fat foods. one of my favorite examples is sugar candies (like candy corn) which have no fat and thus no fat calories yet clearly still contain calories... you wouldn't eat those and say they don't have calories just because they are free of fat calories right??

having said that, it is important to eat quality foods, and a good general rule is to stick with foods where less than 30% of calories comes from fat. of course, there are some healthy exceptions such as nuts which are high in "good"(monounsaturated) fats but in general, lower fat tends to be a characteristic of veggies.

it's not that a lot of veggies would be bad, as you ask, but rather, you don't want to over eat. it would be better to get 500 calories from that bag of veggies than from an artery clogging high sodium alternative, but don't get to thinking that you can eat whatever you want simply because you're choosing healthier foods.

hope that helps!

dancegirl28: i'm in a very similar situation and it is so frustrating! 142 for many many months and desperately trying to get back to 130, ideally 125 given my size (5'3"). its challenging since most traditional resources recommend "diet and exercise".

anyway, just though i would let you know that that i'm struggling with it too. watergirl's website suggestion seems like a solid one and i'm going to try it out... hopefully it'll work for both of us. good luck to you!!
