| Weight Loss | Dear all, need advice.. | Nov 23 2009 06:56 (UTC) |

i know when i started i aimed for 1200 and while i lost weight, it didn't come off in a flattering manner. my top size went down, my pants stayed the same, and i developed love handles. increasing the calorie to at least 1600-1800 with exercise seemed to produce an even slimming. (i don't know if this is fact, just what happened to me) the same thing happened to me around 21 too. (small frame+rapid gain) i felt awful. keep your 6 am workout but add in an afternoon stroll. i walked after work/school when i felt trapped in my apartment and it really improved my mood and reduced the temptation to binge. try to keep busy and don't isolate yourself even though you feel bad. plan a few friend activities out a week (even if it just grabbing coffee) and keep those plans. your friends probably miss you! and you may even inspire healthy eating in them. |

unsweetened almond milk can replace the creamer and it gives a slight nutty taste. i'd just gradually cut the sugar down. that way you'll crave "sweet" one less time in your day. |

I find that I'll eat too much if I think of the day/food as a once a year thing. When I am really enjoying the stuffing on Thanksgiving, instead of getting seconds, I make a note to make it again sometime soon. Knowing that it isn't only my only chance to get that food helps me stay in control. Planning a short workout for later that night can help too. If you know you're going to be moving later, you won't eat till you bursting. And, you can take comfort in knowing you'll be putting a dent in the pie you ate at dinner. Congrats on the 3 lbs! |

You are going to have a great time. Trust me... sometimes we all just get wrapped up in everything and lose sight of the big picture. Maybe you are just worried about the trip... it is a big change for the year. But, calm down and relax. Enjoy yourself, walk all over Europe, enjoy the fantastic food, and come back to America healthier and happier than ever before. |

Breathe. Remember that the trick to good eating is just putting more and more time between the bad eating. We'll always eat too much or too bad from time to time. Think about it this way, before you really wouldn't be too concerned. Now you're focused on being healthy. You did it twice this week?...That's ok. Go for 1 or less next week. Then add in some weeks. Forgive yourself. Go outside, take a walk, get your mind off it. In the long run, you'll be fine.

When you go to a party and load up your plate with the cut veggies and then decide you should add some chips to make the plate look normal. Then you add 3 and don't eat any of them.
When you cook dinner even though you're way too tired and would normally go out but you know nothing could be healthier than lemon pepper tofu with a side of broccoli. When you decide to have a few more calories one day, go out to eat, try to estimate the calories in your meal, and then give up because you have no idea how much oil they added to cook the meal. When your idea of a quick breakfast on the run is driving down the road with a plain kashi waffle between your teeth. |

| Vegetarian | Healthy eating for IBS? | May 28 2008 19:41 (UTC) |
|
| I have the same problem and what you might want to look into is soluble vs. insoluble fiber. Normally one type is worse for someone with IBS than the other. It varies by person. You may be okay with soluble and not with insoluble or the other way around. Personally I have more trouble with insoluble so I stick to soluble as much as possible. Focus on getting more of the "good" kind for you and you can still have a little of the other. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/chd/Tipsheets/solfib er.htm
Also, the best thing I ever did was add 2 T of ground flax seed into my diet (I eat it either mixed in with my cereal or on top of a waffle with jam.) AND everyday eat plain nonfat yogurt. I can tell the days I miss these two foods. And, I have found if I am good about the yogurt for a week or two I can sneak in, without pain, an item that I normally can't eat. |

When ever people ask if I eat gelatin I tell them "No, I'm vegetarian." They always then say "Oh, then you're VEGAN." And then I have to explain that I eat icecream and eggs and that vegans don't eat animal products... I just don't eat anything that had a brain and had to die in order for me to get the food. (I know some vegans would argue that the industries that produce eggs kill animals too but I buy local and am considering raising my own just to be sure.) To me, your point is right on... but it is a touchy subject for some people.
It is a pain (ie: finding non gelcap meds and giving up poptarts) but to me it is worth it.

if you do eggs... this was my breakfast standby in college: take 2 mugs 1/2 cup of quick oats in one with jut enough water to cover the oats (you can add a few golden raisins if you need the sweet but i prefer it plain) 1/2 cup of egg beaters in the other microwave the 2 mugs at the same time for 1.5-2 minutes.
also you can microwave egg beaters in a larger amount in a bowl (it will need a bit more time to cook) and mix in some fat free cheese or some pre cut veggies or some salsa and top with fat free sour cream if you want a quick omelet.
and some times if i'm in a rush i'll grab a piece of fruit and a container of fat free plain yogurt and a mini container of fat free cottage cheese.
all 3 breakfast are 300 calories or less. |

Not sure, but I do know that they have a section on the back of the menu that lists the dishes with about 600 calories. That means 2 things....1- everything else likely has more if 600 is the advertised healthy selection....2- if you just reserve 600 for that choice in your daily plan then feel free to go. Well, in moderation...pancakes are empty calories that will likely encourage you to actually eat more later on. Maybe buy some of those frozen pancakes, enjoy 2 with a big side of better n' eggs? |

This one is alittle ghetto, but oh how I love it as an afternoon snack. 1/2 a cup of fat free cottage cheese (or those little individual cups) mixed with 2 or 3 teaspoons of sugar free instant pudding in the cheesecake flavor. No, it isn't real cheesecake. But it is creamy, tastes great, is under 100 calories, and is a better source of protein than those cheesecake flavored pudding cups. |

| below? yeah, that's fine....just not by too much. if i understand it right your resting rate is what you baiscally need to maintain if you didn't work out....so if you want to lose just not too much... i think 400 or less under sounds ok. but, i could be totally wrong here. | |||

| I was the same way, but in fact it was hurting my diet since I could always say "oh, I still have 50 calories left over" and that would always grow since the next food would "only have 40 in it".
I finally made myself a chart for the day and stuck in on my fridge. Breakfast- One Carb and One protein then I listed all the choices I had like oatmeal, cereal, english muffin etc. I did it for the whole day and made sure that if I selected the highest calorie foods that day the total would be within my range and if I ate all the lowest choices I would still be above the lower end of the healthy range. That way I feel safe knowing I was ok calorie wise but also didn't spend all day snacking on little things. I am trying to change habits so that I don't always have to worry about what happens when I switch back to more normal foods. |

| I am the same way. I'm almost done losing but last night I totally freaked out and got really sad that I had completely over ate that day. BUT while I had eaten a good amount of food that day, because of the changes in what I eat and portion size I added it all up this morning at work and it was only 1500. I freaked out for nothing....if I had walked for 30 minutes I would have been right on target. | |||

| check how much sugar you are getting too. sugar can cause some crazy things to occur in your body where you would feel full if you ate the same calories of something else. according to the dr. oz book, which some people on here like and others don't, you should try to avoid foods with more than 4 grams of sugar in a serving...other than fruit.
protein will keep you feeling full...try adding some egg whites in the morning. |

| I always ask myself "could I get this somewhere else?". If it is just a piece of bread or a basket of chips at the table I think about how if I don't eat it now I bet I'll have another chance to later and I am not really missing out on anything. Of course, if it is a great sounding piece of chocolate dessert that is just screaming my name at a non chain place I'll get but I'll feel glad I did since it was worth it. By now I know how many calories there are in a chip(though I inflate the numbers in my head just a bit to scare myself off) and that works to keep me in line. And like everyone elese said, speciality salads with dressing on the side (dip your fork in) look like a meal. Avoid cheese/sauces/pastas while out since they tend to be way too much. Veggies replace sides. And I always eat my protein since I am paying for it but I'll try to leave some of the bun or tortilla since that's another 200 easy. It just looks like you got full but instead of having a 1/4 of a sandwich left screaming "eat me", you really have no desire to eat a plain little bun. And of course, the diet standard: "water with lemon please" edited for spelling |

| hey guys- sorry away so long....i have been crazy busy with the end of the marking period. Exercise 9.5 hours....Weight 145.
Personally I like this thread because it isn't about lost weight, it is about losing the weight. Sure we're all workign our way down but everybody is more focused on the process rather than the end number. We've all lost a lot of weight, but its the week by week choices that really count. It helps me keep losing, or at least maintain, instead of saying "oh I've already lost a lot". It keeps me focused on the goal of healthy eating. Old habits are hard to break. |
