I also find it hard to believe that if I continue to eat more than I burn, but all of the calories come from fat and protein that I won't gain weight. That just seem illogical to me.

Well after reading Good Calories Bad Calories I switched from low carb to a diet of only fatty meats.  I calculate it to be close to 2200 Calories and sometimes more per day.  I rarely workout.  I do not have some strange high metabolism (I used to weigh 190lbs at 5'6").  I lost 25lbs eating this way.  I plateaued at 150lbs counting calories. Learn it. Live it.  Love it.

80 % of my Calories come from fat.  The rest is meat.  I only eat animal fat which is 50% or so saturated fat.  I feel great, have tons of energy, have lost 25 lbs (down to 122lbs at 5'6") -- it all flew off when I stopped eating carbs.

Animal fat and meat is what humans evolved on.

Hey I belong to that site.  It's a great source for more information.

Giving up carbs wasn't so bad.  I mean is bread that great to begin with?  I dunthinkso and worth the risk.  Do research and check it out.  After a while ya don't miss it at all.

No elimination issues.  Eliminating is much, much easier.  Meat and fat produce very little waste and since it does not irritate the colon or produce much gases as a by product you don't get bloated.

There are no side effects other than excellent health, weight loss, and significantly reduced cravings, after one has become adapted.  It takes from a week to a month.  It is not unlike adaption in Atkins induction where people report flu like symptoms.  It does go away and you will feel better than ever.  I did.

I struggled with counting calories for over a year with no weight loss.  I started low carb and then went zero carb and, well, the fat came off very quickly.

Cheers.

This book is the reason why I went to zero carb eating.  All I eat is meat and fat (over 2000 Cals worth per day most days now).  I have never felt better in my life. I finally lost those last stubborn 25 lbs, and I never worry about what I am going to eat.  There is tremendous science to support this way of eating as optimal that spans multiple disciplines including those in medical science and anthropology.

Dude just follow Atkins's (version from 1972) Induction plan.  It is perfect for your condition.

Those are good.  Throw in some pushups (kneeling or regular), some negative pullups, military press, and tricep dips.

Kneeling pushups are a good warmup.

Move the weights as slowly as possible to avoid momentum.

Im so glad to see people promoting more fat consumption.  Its absolutely important to get lots of fat in your diet and as little grain and sugar products as possible.

Your body uses fat for everything.  Your brain depends on it almost exclusively.

Its really a great idea to drink whole milk.  A little goes a long way.

Stay away from oils that oxidize quickly.  Here is a good summary on why fats are essential (and carbs are not) an which fats are best:

The Skinny on Fats

Since I cut out starchy carbs and sugars I have been losing weight more quickly without working out more and I am actually eating a little more on average and not feeling hungry all the time like I was.  Try replacing at least one starchy item a day with something with high fat and moderate protein.  It doesnt have to be a lot.  100-200 Calories worth to start is good.

Watch the sugar content  especially fructose!  Just because its low cal and low fat doesnt mean its a good idea.  Sugar/sweetness content will just make you crave more.

A deliciously well brewed black coffee (with a  touch of heavy cream if you must) is a wonderful, low fat, low cal, and low sugar/carb drink.  Starbucks makes very nice brewed coffees.  The appreciation of black coffee is not unlike wine.  Sip it slow and take in the lovely aroma.  I highly recommend experimenting with different black coffees to see what you like.  I bet you never miss those frappuccinos and lattes.

Enjoy.

I weight train and run and taking a couple days off before a race has served me well.  It does not impact my ability to lift, etc.

Well if you want to be able to stay focused and keep a good energy level for a longer time you will need to eat snacks with less carbs and more fat and protein.  The carbs will get converted to sugar which raises your blood sugar level but can cause a big drop which leads to fatigue and hunger.  Rather than starchy snacks take a couple boiled eggs and some veggies.  String cheese is also awesome.  Anything low or absent in sugar and carbs and high in fat and protein.

Foods "Carbohydrate of which sugars"??? Oct 09 2008
06:17 (UTC)

You dont technically need carbs or sugars.  The less sugars the better in any case.  In the absence of dietary sugars (carbs and sugars)  your liver will at some point break down protein into glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis.

Some complex carb content is ok for most people.  A diet of 50-60% carbs is not OK for everyone and many people are more healthy and satisfied with a much much lower carb content.

Cut out all grain products and sugars.

Eat the whole egg.

Don't take the skin off chicken.

Eat green veggies.

Eat berries rather than fruits like apples or peaches.

Drink whole milk (a little goes a long way)

Try to avoid highly manufactured foods.  Cheese and milk are fine.

Don't be afraid of fat.  [Without grain products in one's system, fat gets used as fuel more readily and your body absolutely needs a great deal of fat in order to function. The more fat you take in the less your body will think it needs to horde and it will begin to release body fat for fuel.  This is related to how insulin works in the body.]

Eat when hungry; stop when full.  Dont worry very much about portion control but if you know you have been serving yourself way too much, then it's probably a good idea to serve yourself a lot less than you think might satisfy hunger and then eat a little more if not full.  This will teach you more than trying to eyeball portion sizes -- everyone is different after all.

Get nutritional information from more than one source.  I highly recommend starting with the following two books:

Dr Steven Gundry's New Diet Evolution

Gary Taubes's Good Calories, Bad Calories

Less cardio; more weight training.  I recommend The New Rules of Lifting for Women or the Slow Burn method.  There are plenty of great exercises you can do with only your body weight so don't worry about using weights if you cant leave the house.

Rather than a roll get sashimi (no rice).

Fitness Machine lifting - never? Oct 03 2008

The machines are deceptive because it is easy to misuse them.  If you use the right ones and correctly they are very awesome.  If you can get access to older Nautilus machines from the 70s and 80s or MedX machines they are great.  Then you will want to investigate the training methods laid out by the great Arthur Jones and/or Mike Mentzer.  Google them for more info.

Basically you are going to push as much weight as you can for a certain number of reps, VERY SLOWLY, avoiding ANY momentum and on the lest rep you should barely be able to move.  This is a very effective workout and will help prevent injury to tendons and ligaments as long as you build up slowly.

The Drs Eades also recommend a similar program called Slow Burn which I would imagine is also good for use on machines.  Its worth looking into.

And Cassandra Forsythe of The New Rules of Lifting for Women is also a great resource.

At any rate be very careful using any weight equipment when it comes to momentum.  Try to move slowly or you are basically wasting your time and increasing your risk of injury.

Have fun.

Fitness How To Reduce Body Fat Oct 03 2008

At 27% body fat any old cardio will not be effective for weight loss.  High intensity intervals will though.  And weight training is the best.  A combo of both will be the most effective.  I know this from experience.

Weight Loss I need to lose 10lbs in a month, any suggestions?? Oct 03 2008

I totally recommend cutting out starchy carbs -- south beach is a good choice in plan, but it's really good enough to just replace any starchy carbs in your diet, including the so called healthy whole grains, with non starchy veggies (I love bell peppers and spinach) and some fatty protein sources (I love tuna canned in olive oil or boiled eggs -- yay!).  For fruit try berries instead of other fruits.  And try your best to cut out sugary products and even diet sodas.  After a week you wont miss em!

Instead of skim milk drink whole. I'm serious!  Its way more filling for not many more calories plus a great source of calcium.  It makes a great late night snack.

Then do less cardio and more weight training.  My favorite is medicine ball progressions.

Good luck.

The Lounge Does anyone actually enjoy their job??? Oct 02 2008

Ugh.  Workers in this country are not treated like dirt.  This cynicism seems very unfounded.  My company is great.  I know lots of people who love their jobs and love their companies.  Hell even when I worked as a cashier for Michael's Arts and Crafts I was treated fairly and kindly.  If you do not like your job I suggest you find a new one.  Companies are always competing for the best workers and those that dont provide a good working environment will lose workers to those who do.  Have you looked at the Want Ads lately?  Its amazing.  [The reasons companies outsource are myriad and generally related to taxes and regulations, not some horrible greedy evil ethics.  Good lord.  Ive been outsourced FROM India and Austrailia.  The system goes both ways.]

Keep looking.  Keep expanding your skills.  Keep networking.  And always plan ahead for your future.  I think you would be surprised how easy it is to save a great deal of money over a lifetime even with a moderate pay job.  Just do your research and be vigilant.

Cheers.

A person dedicated to finding opportunity will eventually find the right place for himself.  Just dont give up!

I love my job.  Im in IT, software engineering, but Im a geological engineer by education with a focus in electrical methods in geophysics.  Yeah that sounds like a mouthful but it was REALLY fun and challenging and gave me a skill base that allows me to transition between a variety of fields.

If you love hiking, traveling, and the outdoors I highly recommend the geological studies:  mining, geophysics, geology.  You will get a wide array of skills and knowledge all while roaming around the beautiful outdoors camping, climbing, and hiking all over the place.  I have seen some of the most wonderful places in the world and I understand them in a way that regular people dont.  Its great.

Best of luck to you in your search.

Fitness New Runner Who Needs Some Tips Sep 30 2008

What??  You are a NEW runner and your plan already has you running 8 miles right off the bat?  This is not a beginner program then.  Where did you find this program?

You dont need to lose any weight and running is not efficient for weight loss anyway (unless you are elite marathoner running 100 miles per week).  Train for a marathon to complete the marathon NOT to lose weight.

Do weight training and watch what you eat (this does not mean calorie restriction) in order to lose weight.  But I would not count on running alone because endurance training can cause your body to store fat especially if you are at a normal weight, which you are.

Whole grains aren't any better for you or your blood sugar.  Have a nice slice of bread.  Put a little butter on it too and make it the carb part of a meal and you shouldnt have a problem.

There are LOTS of people in the community who have and are still running.  If you are looking for a running specific support forum try RunningAhead.com -- it's great.

I'm at my one year anniversary of completeing Learn to Run (similar to Couch to 5K) and Im still running -- a lot.  Racing season has started again finally and I have been signing up for everything I can.  I also plan on running my second half marathon again in March.

Running is great fun.  Just keep at it if you are enjoying it or find it a great challenge because it is very rewarding.  But running is not for everyone and that's totally OK!

If you have to repeat sessions, or even weeks dont get discouraged.  The program's progressions are not aggressive so it's pretty hard to actually fail at it unless you just flat give up.  The great thing is that once you get to running for 30 minutes, longer distances are much easier to accomplish.

Enjoy!

Fitness running vs. elliptical Sep 29 2008
21:01 (UTC)

They are both fine.  Many elite runners will use the elliptical for training when they have an injury.  That said, running can get really easy too so you have to challenge yourself.  I recommend for both running and elliptical doing interval training with either intervals of increased speed or resistance (incline on a treadmill or hills on the road).
