| Weight Loss | what are your personal "Yeah!" moments | Jun 01 2009 18:15 (UTC) |

The moment I am actually waiting for is a little silly - I want to be able to lay down in the bath tub and have my whole belly be covered by the water! Then there are more normal things like fitting my old clothes, feeling better about myself, looking better, knowing I will live a longer, healthier life, etc. |

I think some accountability might do me good. I've been struggling with weight for several years, and then over the last year or so something has gone wrong and I gained 40 lbs (I stopped drinking 2+ times a week and no more taco bell and rallys - shouldn't that have been a good thing?). At any rate, I'm going to be exercising at least 4 days a week and planning more veggies in every meal. We'll see how that turns out. Date: 4/27/09 Weight: 210lbs Goal Weight: 140lbs Short term goal: lose 5 lbs before May 30. |

I'm not a professional in any capacity related to this, but I would say that you'd fall under light activity even without the 40 minute walks. You're up and moving all day, which is really not sedentary. Just my opinion. |

True story - I just had 4 T of pb with celery, and I'm still going to be about 400 under. I had 1/2 c cereal with milk and 2 oz turkey, a carrot / raisin salad w/ low fat dressing, an orange, 3 more oz turkey, a fiber bar, and have accounted for dinner - 2c of brown rice, 3 oz chicken and some teryaki veggies. It seems wrong - I've only been making 2 or 300 under and gone to bed hungry. |

Hello - I have never been in your situation, but I thought that it might be helpful for you to know that I'm 5'7" and I'm actually losing plenty of weight at 1500 calories per day, so there is little chance that's going to make you fat. |

I took a health and wellness class at a local university, and they recommended 25-30% from fat. 10% is way too low. it's more like 25-30% fat, 15-20% protein, 50-60% carbs. Where did you get that information? |

Zebulancherry made my day. I think HungryGirl is pretty crazy, too. She's like "the less food that's in it, the better it must be!" You can't just fake your body out like that. Though if I could get the stuff that McD uses to generate the flavor / scent of their fries, and add it to carots or something... j/k |

I'm going to agree with the shimmercat. I've never bought frozen or dried, but the fresh ones are pretty multi-use - stir fry, salads, snacks, etc. I find that they sometimes need a little spice or sauce or something, though. As for unshelled, they certainly are more convenient, but buying the ones with the shells on makes you take longer snacking, which is a benefit sometimes. |

I'm 5'7", 190 lbs, and I wear a 10-12 on top and a 12-14 on the bottom. Back when I was only like 135 lbs I was a 6-8 on top and 8-10 on the bottom :( Ah, the good old days. Hopefully they're coming back again! |

Best of luck to you, Erica. I don't know if this will help you or not, but I just want to say that I'm 23 now, and I never talk to anyone I knew in high school. Out of my two best friends, one moved far away and I never see her, and the other I haven't talked to in nearly four years because she got into drugs and when I told her that she was hurting herself, she stopped talking to me. It sucks right now, but eventually you just make other friends and move on. I thought my life was over, but in the end it really isn't that bad. And congrats on not purging anymore. I always think after I eat way too much that it's not too late to fix it, but then I just remind myself that if I do it once, I'll never quit. I never want to be owned by a sensation like that. I can't imagine how hard it must be to take away your quick fix. You're probably stronger than I am. Well, *HUGS* to you, and I hope you're having a good day today. You can add me if you want, and I'd be willing to listen if you ever just need to talk. Chin up and all that, you know. |

Original Post by xx_remix: You might lose more weight if you increase your calorie intake. People on this site are ever concerned with "starvation mode," which basically means that your body thinks you're trying to starve it, and so it slows your metabolism down and refuses to burn any calories it doesn't absolutely have to. If you're not eating enough, it actually makes it harder to lose weight. You really should check out some of those calculators for teens. Best of luck to you. |

| Foods | what's the funniest "diet" food you ate before you knew about calories? | Apr 17 2008 15:49 (UTC) |

That's a really funny story. In my family, they believe that a lot of weird stuff is good for you - like lettuce with like an entire cup of full fat dressing. Or an entire box of mac-n-cheese. Cheese is really good for you. And veggies are still just as good for you when they're fried in like 2-3T of oil and covered in suggary, buttery sauce. And 4T of peanut butter is totally normal for a sandwich - with another 2T of butter. Yes, butter. America's families need a serious re-education if mine is any indicator. |

If you browse this website, there are so many good ideas for filling foods. One of my favorite things is to drink a cup of boullion if I feel snacky but don't want the extra calories. I've also found that adding a significant amount of protein to my meals helps me stay fuller longer. I'm not the one to ask about getting healthy, though. I consume like 300% of reccomended daily intake of salt. I figure that once I start eating more healthy foods and drop a good 30-40 lbs, then I'll worry about eating food that doesn't even taste good at all (meaning no salt). If you're just looking for moral support, feel free to add me as a friend and message me any time. I'm 23, living in Michigan, and a college student for one more semester (yay!). |

As you age, your body becomes more efficient at processing the foods you eat. When you are younger, it takes more calories for you to do the same metabolic tasks. Also, aging encourages your body to lower its muscle content and raise its fat content, so older people have slower metabolisms. I hope that makes sense. |

The calculators on this website are intended for ... ahem... older people. At 17, your body needs more calories to function than someone who is 25,35,40, etc. I'm not calling you a kid by any means, but your body just isn't as efficient yet as an older person's body, and so you need more calories each day. I hope you don't take that the wrong way. Best of luck to you. |

| Weight Loss | how do i count these calories?? | Mar 16 2008 15:21 (UTC) |

You only need to account for the amount that you eat. Think of it like this: you have 2 packages of soup. Each package makes one cup. Each cup has 100 cals. You mix the two packages together. You now have 2 cups of soup and 200 cals. You eat one cup of soup. This is half of the soup, so half of the cals (200), which equals 100 cals ingested.

| I hear you. Not only is it holiday time, but there's stress from final exam week, and I'm actually done with most of my classes, so all my friends that I haven't seen in two or three months want to have dinner or go drinking or whatever. I was at a house party on Friday and ended up drinking an entire two-litre of Sprite (plus some Vodka). I don't even want to know how many hours at the gym I'll be making up for that. Grr. Vigilance is the greater part of excellence. I don't think that's the saying, but I'm going to run with it. | |||

I took a fitness walking class several years ago, and they gave me this for walking ( I don't know if it'll help)
If you walk at 2 mph, multiply your weight in KG by .0357 . This is how many calories you burn per minute. 2.5 mph, multiply by .0429 3.0 mph, .0529 3.5 mph, .0600 4 mph, .0786 4.5 mph, .1000 5 mph, .1186 This all assumes a flat surface. Hope that helps. |

I'm going to agree with the previous poster and say that you should be measuring for fat loss and get tested for possible health concerns (my grandma never lost weight until she got on some thyroid medicine), but I'd also say to eat more. The suggested weight loss range of 1-2 pounds per week only allows for a maximum of 1000 calorie deficit per day, and you're blowing that out of the water. Maybe your body's trying to tell you something. I know that I stall out every couple of weeks, and then I have to eat up to my max burn for a day or two to get the ball rolling again - go figure, I eat more and then the weight drops off on those two days. Humph! Seriously, I hope that was helpful to you. Good luck! |

Well, I think I'm in a little bit worse shape than you (trying to lose 50 lbs), but I'd be glad to work on the first 15 with you. I'm already calorie-counting and I've been going for walks about five days a week, so I'm feeling pretty motivated. Let me know how you want to work this buddy-system, or just drop me a note at any time. ~Angelique |

| Hi guys,
I'm sort of new here, but I thought I would let you know that in my "Wellness" class in college they told us a good percentage breakdown was 30% fat, 15-20% protein, and 50-55% carbs. I'm always high on carbs, though, and usually a bit low on fat. I'm not so very worried about that, though. |
