Fruit!  Fruit, fruit, fruit . . . FRUIT! Even before I even thought about eating healthy: hot summers, picking peaches and apricots and right off the trees . . . mmmmmm.  Cucumbers w/dill and plain yogurt, too, and radishes w/salt.  I have a weakness for salty things, like salt licorice.  And you know what's good (if not kind of weird): whole wheat toast w/a thin layer of miso on it.

Weight Loss Very strict, occasionally binge...what to do? May 11 2007

Ooooohh!!!  I know how you feeeeel!   I don't do that as much as I used to, but I still do occasionally.  I agree with red_herring, though, inasmuch as the thing that seems to cut down my binges is being less strict more of the time in smaller, healthier ways.

Although how much I should eat is an ongoing thing for me, as a recent post of mine attests, so who knows if I'm any kind of authority.

One thing, kind of off-topic, though: do you run on asphalt?  As an ex- and hopefully soon to be again distance runner, I might gently suggest (if you're not already) getting in as much track/treadmill/dirt running as possible.  Sorry to sound patronizing, but one of the reasons I had to stop running (it broke my heart!) was because my knees were so shot!

Good luck with the eating, and the running!

You people are angels, thanks so much for the feedback!  I thought it over today in the pool, and I think I might find a new doctor, for sure.  Either that, or tell him I'm going back to my 1/4 # a week (or so) weight loss, and he can lump it.  I looked at what I was doing before, when I was losing about 1-2# a month (and my stupid doctor told me its was too slow), and it was about 2000 cal.

P.S. zeebi, although I eats tons and tons of fruits and veggies (not to be virtuous, but just because I love them!)  But you're right, I'm sure I don't really drink as much water as I think I do!

S'okay!  Sorry I didn't respond.  No, my 1600 is pre-exercise.

Yeah, I had the iron checked, too!  When I went in to the doctor, I said the magic word "dizzy spells," and he gave me all the tests. Ha ha!

Oh no, beleive me, I've got a scale and everything.  I'm down to the gram.  Plus, I eat mostly food I cook myself, and I utilize the USDA database for figuring the kCal in my recipes.

Sigh.  You're probably right.  I tried 1400 a day, though, and I found myself waking up 4-5 times a night DREAMING of eating; couldn't concentrate at work, either.  It's so frustrating!

Well, okay, why not!

Age: 27 (28 in a week!)

Height: 5'4"

Weight: 155-ish

Medium frame (but, in my defense, I have a 27 inch waist and a 34DD bustline. I know this might sound nuts to some, but my bust is the one thing about myself I don't like!)

Medium frame

My goal is maybe 135, we'll see.  I'm really, really not concerned about losing it fast, though.  My guilty secret is: I only read about half of the posts!!  Sorry!!!  Message me, my twin/s :)

I agree with the comment above about you still growing.  You've done great for yourself losing that weight but, remember, it is generally not recommended for men of any weight, unless they are extremely sedentary, to consume less than 1500 calories a day.  You are essentially starving yourself at this point, and you risk losing muscle mass as well as a host of other problems.

One thing I might suggest is this.  From what they've told us in the various seminars and so forth that I've been sent to (I teach in a public High School), the recommended amount of exercise (per day) for someone your age is about 60 minutes.  I don't mean to stress you out more with this, just to suggest that rigorous dieting might not be the first place to look for weight maintenance in your situation.

In my own experience, as well (I am 29, and lost about fifty pounds several years ago) plenty of vigorous exercise can really, really help with both weight maintenance and self-esteem.

Sorry to be so wordy, I just hate to see people unhappy!  I'm sure you're beautiful right now!  The mirror is lying to you!

You know, I just saw my doctor about a weight loss plan several months ago.  Certainly, everyone is different, and doctors aren't omniscient.  However, he told me that under 1200 calories a day, and over 2 pounds a week (for anyone) is generally considered to indicate unhealthy dieting behavior.

Also (and again, there are certainly many studies with conflicting results) you might want to check out some of the reviews of that new article in American Psychologist that are all over the web.  Much more comprehensive than many other, previous studies on dieting, the study's results generally seemed to show that crash dieters nearly always put the weight back on, eventually.

I guess I actually do the three meals thing, I'd never thought about it!

I'm like this:

-1/2 cup soymilk or something before the bike commmute (8:15)
-bowl of oatmeal or shredded wheat after (9:00)
-fruit or carrots or peas for a snack (11:00)
-sandwich, or leftovers, or fruit and plain yogurt for lunch (1:00)
-more fruit and veggies for a snack (3:30)
-dinner: say, baked salmon, steamed green beans and salad (8:30)

I snack, but they tend to be small snacks: my real calories come from my meals.   I average 1700 cal/day.

I also swim for 1 1/2 hours a day, lift weights three times a week, and do yoga, so sometimes how little I eat is governed by how safely I think I can get around on my bike in the city without getting lightheaded!

So far I haven't had any trouble losing weight, but it's probably because I'm perfectly happy losing it super-slowly.  I've given myself five years: I'm almost half-way there!
