Weight Loss Approaching the Finish Line Group: Only 20 pounds or LESS left until your goal!!! May 15 2008

I join wombatboi in saying that this group is perfect!  I'm so happy to see this thread, as it feels impossible to lose these last 20 pounds.  I think I've been at my current weight for 5 months (with tiny some ups and downs), and I'm just dying to finish this weight loss journey!  My boyfriend is supportive and always tells me that what he’s heard is that these last 20 pounds are the hardest, but it’s comforting to see that it’s true for others as well!  Even better, it’s great to see people who are actually still managing to lose weight weekly, as it’s a great motivator.

So here are my weight stats:

Beginning weight (June 06): 270 lbs

Current weight (May 08): 155 lbs

Total Lost: 115 lbs

Goal: 135 lbs

20 pounds to lose by August 23 (vacation start date)!

Strategy to get it done: A much more aggressive workout schedule (every other day, or so), and a return to my more restrictive (very balanced and very healthy) eating patterns.  Also, I like the visualization/mantra techniques others have mentioned.  I will try to deter cravings for the baked goods in the office by imagining myself on the beach this August (actually in a swim suit, not a t-shirt and shorts set!) on my upcoming vacation with my wonderful boyfriend.  For once, I'll enjoy the beach!  And I like the mantra I've seen used -- "No food tastes as good as being my goal weight [thin and sexy] feels."

Good luck everyone!

I've definitely read plenty of Judith Butler's work.  Actually about 50% of my graduate program was unofficially devoted to her.  Reading the way she conceptualized gender not only changed the way I thought about men and women (and the in-between), but about the world in general.  It showed me that there are highly theoretical ways to look at the world, and I thought that was pretty cool.  I also find her theories nearly impossible to apply to real life.  It was as if I was very gender liberal in the classroom and very heteronormative in my real life (and I've grown to be okay with that).

What else do you think besides the critique of her writing style?

If it makes you feel any better, a recent plateau for me (which did last a while) was actually great for my body.  Although I didn't lose any weight for a couple of months (including some stressful time when I opted to just maintain), I've gone down in clothing sizes from a 12 to an 8.  So, I think that sometimes your body needs to slow down and adjust itself to all the weight you've lost.  I had lost 110 in about 16 months, so I think a break was fitting.  I'm actually happy that this happened because I'm hopeful that losing it more slowly (through this little timeout) will keep me from ending my weight loss with the dreaded extra skin that we all hear about.  I'm not sure how it works, but I definitely look much different (so much smaller!) than I did before my plateau. Now I'm back on track and ready to finish losing the weight, so I promise that you'll come out of it if you just stay motivated!  Sometimes plateaus aren't all that bad.  Laughing

I love this post.  I'm looking forward to...

  • being thin for the first time in my entire life!
  • wearing dresses and skirts; sleeveless and spaghetti strap tops, form-fitting tops
  • going to the beach without wearing a shirt and shorts over my suit!
  • not just being a nice girl, but a smoking hot girlfriend...making my next bf's friends jealous
  • having my body mass match my natural body frame (I had no idea I had such a small frame)
  • showing off my hourglass figure (that I never knew I had)

110 pounds down, 30-40 left to go!

Weight Loss 2008 New Years Resolution(s)? Jan 02 2008

I'm resolving to:

1) Reach my weight goal (just 25-30 lbs left, 110 already lost!)

2) Meet new people by going out, volunteering, pursuing hobbies, and joining groups.

3) Pay attention to where I spend money, for once.  Along with this is to actually make a budget and save more money each month.

4) Figure out my career goals now that I've finished my master's degree.

5) Make time/set aside money to travel.

2008 should be a pretty exciting year!

Motivation Under 25 with over 25 to lose. Jul 13 2007

My name is Mari

I'm 5'3" tall and 183 pounds. I started out this time last year at 270 pounds.

My goal is about 125. I've never been that thin, so I'm not exactly sure what my goal is, but this is what C-C estimates.

I'm 24.

I live in Boston, MA.

I have two major motivations: I want to be thin and healthy for the first time in my entire life to experience life less hindered by my weight, and I want to complete (and maintain) my weight loss by next spring in preparation to (hopefully) join the Peace Corps in August 2008.

P.S. Nani - I just moved from Orlando, FL... Go UCF Knights!
Weight Loss how much did you weigh at 18? May 13 2007

As may have been mentioned, I think this kind of goal weight only works for those who were thin at the age of 18! When I was 18 (nearly 6 years ago), I weighed as much, if not more, than I do now (after losing 75 pounds).  So I definitely do not want to work towards my weight at age 18!
Weight Loss have you ever???? May 13 2007

Like Nocturne said, I can definitely weight 10 pounds more in the evening just due to food, clothing, exercise, and other daily stuff. I do tend to weigh myself throughout the day (i.e. I'll just walk by and weigh myself randomly), but I keep in mind that not only am I fully clothed, but have food in my stomach that wasn't there when I first woke up.  I do, however, find it useful to weigh once later in the day because it can give me an idea about if I'm retaining water.

And yes, not only can different scales give alternate weights, but the same scale can give different results! I have weighed myself on my roommate's digital scale five times in 30 seconds (one right after another) and gotten 5 totally different readings, and my non-digital scale says something different too! Of course, I don't make it a habit of weighing myself six times, but it was a funny experiment.
Weight Loss How did you lose all that weight? Some Questions for you... May 11 2007

1) As of today, I have lost 75 pounds, with 70 more to go.

2) At first I barely calorie counted, but moved to a big city (Boston), where I had to walk everywhere. That got me started, but only helped for so long, so calorie counting has helped me get back on the weight loss wagon.

3) Once you're raised as an overweight girl, you are taught that you're worthless and will never be able to lose weight, let alone have a happy life. It's difficult to get that out of your head.

4) Very little support. My fiance at the time (now ex-fiance) was supportive at the beginning because he also needs to lose weight, but then became annoyed with my calorie counting and tried to convince me that I "have a problem" with trying to eat healthy and get down to a healthy weight (which I most certainly do not -- being meticulous and caring a lot do not constitute a problem).

4.5) Life-long wonder about what it's like to be thin, as I've been overweight since age 4 or so.  Also, I've been driven by a desire (as silly as it might sound) to be able to wear attractive clothing! Plus sized clothing are so frequently unattractive and/or not designed for my age-range.  I'm looking forward to being able to shop where ever I want to.

5) Primarily? Being a graduate student has been such a struggle.  Exercise is almost out of the question thanks to the level of theoretical work I have to do for my program (hours and hours of reading each day), and the stress levels contributed a desire to eat too much of the unhealthy stuff.

6) Well, I'm not skinny yet! But I have noticed getting attention from guys that I've never experienced before, so that's already different.

I also totally know how you feel. I'm a grad student and it seems that finding time to exercise is the hardest thing to do.  This time of year is especially bad for me (anyone else agree?) as I have projects on top of normal school work, AND my thesis proposal to work on. It's gotten to the point that if I'm not at my part-time job, the library, or in class, I'm working on the massive amounts of homework and thesis reading that must be done.

One thing that's helped me stay on track is being really careful with what and how much I eat.  I live off campus so even getting to the grocery store takes too much time out of my reading opportunities. So, I recently started getting groceries delivered.  It's been great and has allowed me to stay on the right eating path which, for me, includes lots and lots of fresh veggies.  I was skeptical at first, thinking that it would be too expensive or below-par quality, but it's been wonderful.  I use PeaPod by Stop&Shop for anyone who has a Stop&Shop near them.  It's online and easy, so I recommend it to anyone with too little time to get the important things (like grocery shopping) done!

Now I just need to find time to go to the gym.  But that's not solved so easily.
Weight Loss Why do I want to eat even though I'm not hungry? Mar 14 2007

I know exactly what you mean too.  I'm not exactly sure why it happens, but I know that I tend to eat out of boredom.  Or when I know there's something delicious waiting for me (like for you, your sandwich in the fridge), I've actually been known to throw away the tempting food.  For example, a few months ago a co-worker brought back a brownie for me from a small event.  I had no one to share it with, so I had a few bites (what I estimated would be about a serving), and tried to set it aside.  I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I finally picked it up and threw it away.  Like turning off a light bulb, I didn't worry about the food anymore.

Over time, eating healthy and exercising has actually helped me to not feel this urge so much.  I think a big part of getting healthy is really about forming a better relationship with food and our bodies, so it's been easier to decline treats that aren't nutritionally useful (but I definitely still have little indulgences as it's not mentally healthy to deny ourselves all the time, right?).

I'm not sure if this really helps, but I wanted you to know that you're definitely not alone!

If you're open to using workout DVDs/tapes, I recommend Billy Blanks' workouts.  I go to the gym to cycle now and then, but I really enjoying staying in to workout too.  I recently bought his Spot Training: Upper Body workout from someone on eBay and paid $10 or so including shipping.  The prices from his website (www.billyblanks.com) are reasonable too since there's no shipping cost (I believe).  Some of his workout programs are really tough, but it gives me a great goal (to be able to complete the workout without stopping to stretch or take a break).

This really is a good thread.  I'm looking forward to:

  • not having to shop at Lane Bryant, Avenue, or the plus size/special size sections
  • being able to shop almost anywhere
  • wear sleeveless shirts
  • wearing shorts and skirts
  • wearing a bathing suit without a t-shirt and shorts on top
  • being comfortable in more feminine clothes
  • having a better relationship with food
  • and despite my congenital knee problems, maybe getting to wear cuter shoes (one can hope!)

It's even inspiring/motivating to put down your weights in such a public forum. I know that a lot of CC people do it a lot (i.e. in the clubs), but to those of us who don't post often, it's a bit liberating.

Start: 270 (June 06)

Current: 214

Goal: 130

You can also try Boca Burger brand chili. I find it very good, and it's very fast (since it's microwavable).  It's vegan, pretty high in protein and low in fat and calories.

Sandwiches are always good too.  Tofurky brand makes good deli slices that make quick easy sandwiches. They are definitely vegan.
