My college doesn't have a gym so I've been doing squats, pushups, planks, etc for weight training. Is that enough? I thought cardio was anything that involved getting your heart rate pumping...so more along the lines of running.

Nope, I'm finishing up college. We've discussed our relationship in a long-term manner- marriage, kids, our future together, etc but we both agree that it would have to wait a few more years because we both want to be somewhat established in our careers first. |

| Health & Support | When does binge eating become an eating disorder? | Jun 29 2008 23:16 (UTC) |

Wow, it's almost freaky to read every post in this thread and to be able to pretty much be able to relate to everyone! I've continuously tried to stop "my problem" by "controlling myself" but it usually just ends up with even worse binges (take this weekend for example...10,000+ calories over the past three days). Since I've become more aware of my binge-ing issues, I've definitely noticed that I only eat in private now (which sucks because it means my friends and family don't believe me when I try to tell them I have a problem) and I can't stop until I am absolutely and thoroughly disgusted with myself. I'd love to hear any tips that people might have on how they've managed to exert more control?
And finally, is it still possible to have BED if you are within normal weight? I definitely have all the issues mentioned by previous posters but I almost feel ridiculous mentioning it to other people because I am not physically overweight. |

| Weight Loss | Swimming for Weight Loss | Jan 24 2008 18:33 (UTC) |

| I used to be a varsity swimmer and I definitely didn't lose weight through swimming; in fact, I often found myself one or two sizes bigger after the season was over. It might have been because I was a teenager and still growing but I used to have to eat a LOT several hours before practice to survive the cold and workout and then a LOT afterwards to refuel my body. In general, my weight stayed about level or maximum gained 5 lbs but I looked much bigger in the shoulders. If you're a guy...this could be a good thing. What I've also found is that swimming isn't very good at toning your muscles- it's much better to swim and lift simultaneously to get that effect. I think you should try swimming and see how your body reacts to it. If you can control your appetite and throw in some abwork and weights, you'd be in great shape. Oh, also, try running as crosstraining or running in the pool. Hope it helps! |

| Weight Loss | Is the "Ideal Size" About Society or About Us? | Jan 24 2008 18:24 (UTC) |

| I guess I'll be the devil's advocate. I am personally 5'6.5", 120-123 lbs and definitely looking to lose 5 or so lbs. It's not because I think I'm overweight or that I think I look fat but simply because I felt a lot more comfortable in my body at a lower weight. My friends constantly tell me that I am thin but I want to be toned and I want to wake up everyday not feeling bloated in my face. Everyone has a different body; some have lower bone masses and smaller bone structures and others do not. In other words, there is no cookie cutter weight or size for a certain height. I used to weight a few lbs less as a varsity swimmer all throughout high school but I wore pants and shirts two sizes bigger. Society definitely influences how we view the "ideal weight." Anybody telling you differently would simply be ignoring the facts right in front of their faces. But society is changing as well. Decades ago, our current size "0" pants would have been a size "4" or higher. How does this change in size measurement reflect on the direction our society is headed? The rising obesity problem in this nation was not suddenly fabricated by some doctors and politicians after looking at a bunch of skinny models- it's a true and hard fact that more and more people are at risk for diabetes and heart problems as a result of their weight. What's more, take a look at Europe and other wealthy nations across the globe. With the exception of Asia (which definitely has an unhealthy obsession with weight and external appearances in general), international citizens across the globe have ALWAYS been thinner than Americans. They don't go to the gym regularly, restrict their eating, or spend hours figuring out how to lose a few more pounds. With a different lifestyle, they naturally end up thinner than us. Ok, I think I'm going all over the place with my argument since new ideas and opinions keep popping into my head. At this point, I definitely think media puts A LOT of pressure on us to lose weight and look thin and it definitely does it to an extreme but when does media do anything to a halfway point? Maybe their decision to display thinness to the extreme is just their way of addressing a true problem. |

| Weight Loss | I binge 1000 calories at a time. Please help me. | Dec 11 2007 17:21 (UTC) |

| As a college student, I totally know what you mean. It's those last few hours before you go to bed that you suddenly crave all the food you have stopped yourself from eating earlier in the day. I generally binge 1000 to 2000 calories at once. I don't know if you've tried this but I've found that only eating NAKED in front of a mirror helps. Also, shopping. Recently, I have hated going shopping because every time I change, I notice my weight. | |||

| Weight Loss | The "myth" that Asian girls are naturally slim | Oct 29 2007 20:10 (UTC) |

| I find this thread very interesting because I truly do believe that I fit the "Asians have small frames" stereotype. I've always been very skinny and yet all my friends can tell you that I eat like a pig. I used to be very active and so the reason why I don't look like a skeleton now is from all the muscles I've developed from intense swimming and weight training. Even now, though, I am considered slim (5'6.5" and 120 lbs). Personally, 120 is the highest I have ever been and I really really hate it. I feel disgusting and bloated all the time (I just discovered that I had binge eating disorder), I'm lethargic, I've developed a double chin, and I jiggle every time I move. To most, my height/weight would be ideal or even underweight but for me, I am definitely at least 5 lbs overweight! It's all about the individual |
