| The Lounge | Question about Evolution | Sep 02 2008 22:11 (UTC) |

| "Who says you can't have both? I believe humans are both rational and emotionally based in their thinking. So while we need science and our rational mind provides it with all it's wonders, the spiritual also fullfills needs on the emotional level. As for evolution, I believe in it, but I don't think that means there are no Dieties." +1 !!! The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive (depending on how literal your religious point of view is). I'm not religious at all but I went to a catholic high school and they taught us how evolution could possibly go side by side with the bible (the handout had a timeline and everything). And evolution is NOT humans coming from monkeys. The theory of evolution suggests that we share mutual ancestors. If you have a problem with that then that's fine, you have every right to believe anything you wish, but please refrain from suggesting that humans evolved from monkeys. Different branches of the tree. I think a large part of the clashing is due to people not fully understanding what the theory evolution postulates and not understanding the scientific method and community. But that's just my 2 cents. |

| I try not to reward by weight since it fluctuates so much but rather go by how many days/weeks I am "on the wagon." I allow a certain amount of falling off the wagon and if I acheive the number of weeks I set out to, I'll then give myself my reward.
My next reward is going to be a BIG one: I want a gravity dropper for my mountain bike (a device you put on your bike that adjusts the height of your seat by merely pressing a button/trigger on your handlebars!!! You don't have to get off your bike to raise your seat for climbs or lower your seat for descents, soo cool.) I consider it a luxary item though since I can always get off my bike to adjust and it costs around $200-300. 60 days on the wagon and I'm buying myself one!!! |

Haha, I've actually experienced the opposite... Working out my chest/pecs have made my boobies perkier and seem larger! |

| In regards to measuring out the Olive Oil, I agree measuring spoons are a PAIN and I don't trust the amount. I use a syringe with mililiter lines (sold for cooking) so I can measure in ml. One tablespoon I believe is 15mL and I hardly ever use that much! The measuring spoons are such a pain, the cooking syringe is nice and easy and CLEAN since you can just pull it directly from the bottle. Just an idea =) |

| 5'4 145 lbs Size 13 in nearly all types of pants (although 12 when I wear misses, isn't it supposed to be 11/12, 13/14 etc????). Medium in shirts My friend is also 5'4, 140lbs and she wears a size 8! AND she also has a big booty! I don't get sizes at all. Most people think I am a size 6 or 8 by looking at me but NOPE! Size 13 and it hasn't budged in 20 lbs lost.... (belt sizes have definately changed though)... Guess people are just different. =) |

| If you;re worried about your photos or important documents, upload them to an internet server, or make copies on cds and give them to your family/friends. I just back up all my important documents and programs onto my external harddrive, that way in a fire or an emergency I just have to grab my tiny harddrive and not the entire tower! Of course if you have a laptop it would be much easier to grab but still if it gets dropped and there's water (flood) or smoke damage, if you have your photos/documents saved somewhere else online, you don't have to worry about losing all those memories... |

| Fitness | Bike riding, a good way to lose weight? | May 06 2008 21:30 (UTC) |

| I totally agree that strength training is essential to weight loss!
Man, you guys need to try MOUNTAIN BIKING! My heart rate is nearly as high on the DOWNHILLS than they are on the uphills (nearly the same calories burned going downhill) AND I use my core and upper body A LOT, my triceps and a bit of my biceps are SORE (and lookin pretty good if I say so myself, ;-) LOL) because I use them to absorb whatever my fork can't absorb... Just wear a HRM so you can tell if you are taking it to easy or not... if you're going too easy then bike more miles... Extreme running is a BLAST! =) |

| I have to respectfully disagree about biking NOT being a good for weightloss unless you travel at least 10 miles... Weight loss = Calories In, Calories Out, right? Well, speaking from personal experience biking (surprisingly) gets my heart rate higher than any other form of cardio (even more so than running!). I wear a heart rate monitor and weekdays after work I'll ride my bike up a pretty mellow fireroad and back down, then back up then back down for probably a total of 6 miles and burn on average 750 calories for 80 minutes. And that's a super easy ride... There's this 11 mile loop I do every Sunday that takes me about 2 and a half hours and I burn 1200 calories! I think it really depends 1) WHERE you are biking (as I just noticed you addressed in a follow-up post, haha oh well I'll still post), Ex: Pavement, Dirt, Uneven surfaces, Hills, Downhill, etc and 2) How good of bike fitness you have (which will determine your heart rate), it's great cross-training (I could run 8 miles no problem when I started mountain biking but a 5 mile ride was hard!) You and everyone else that have posted are right though, it depends how hard you push yourself. If you are jus cruisin around on a flat paved road or in the gym it's going to take time and distance to burn a lot of calories. For the OP, just remember, hills are your friend =) |

| Fitness | If you had ALL day to work out, what would you do? | Apr 14 2008 17:39 (UTC) |
1 |
| Go mountain biking, all day (carrying the essential tools, water, and nutrition of course). The come back before dark for a healthy hearty dinner. Then go for an evening swim, washing off all the dirt and relaxing my sore muscles!
Though, that would be more of a vacation to me then a "boot camp" experience. But if I started my fitness routine with gym stuff I'd get bored terribly fast! If I started it with an activity (an activity which might I add kicks your butt!) I love, I'd want to maintain a fitness routine so I could just get better and better at said activity. It's all about keeping it fun and working towards a goal! |

| Fitness | Heart Rate Monitor - calories burned seem insanely high, help please! | Mar 27 2008 14:23 (UTC) |

| This might sound kind of obvious and if you've already done it please disregard my post but just make sure to double check your basic user stats (age, sex, height, weight). I had forgotten to change the weight after losing a lot and that affected the amount of calories I burned by A LOT! I'd also assume if you mistakenly entered yourself as "male" it would probably show a lot more calories burned as well. | |||

| For those of you against ingesting any kind of GELATIN, I have a question for you:
What do you do when you have to take pills/meds/vitamins that are in a capsule form (not tablet)? The plastic-like shell of a capsule is all gelatin... Do you request your doctors to prescribe all meds not encapsulated by gelatin (aka no capsules whatsoever)? I worked at an analytical chemistry lab for a while and was always curious as to how many people realize capsules are made from gelatin... Thanks! for your answers =) |

| Fitness | HRM overestimating calories burned? | Jan 07 2008 23:37 (UTC) |

| Haha, I'm another one! Ok here is where my confusion lies: Running(cardio) vs. Weight lifting. I usually have a fairly consistant HR(~150-160) while running but when weight lifting, my HR will spike drastically(~175) while performing the reps and then go back down(~130) as I recover.
So my HRM has been telling me I've been burning the same amount of calories running as weight lifting. BUT during weight lifting, if I am not moving between reps, just resting how can I burn the same as actually moving/running? Are you burning calories by just having an elevated heart rate and NOT moving? This doesn't make much sense to me though because what about stress/caffeine? I'm beginning to think that my Polar F11 is not as reliable as I had hoped! Maybe we should assume its overestimating by a 100-200 calories, depending on time? |

| Fitness | HELP - does anyone else get trapezoid muscles from their shoulder exercises or know how to do them so that you don't get them? | Jul 13 2007 03:59 (UTC) |
2 |
| You asked if anyone else was there with you and I sure am. I think toned shoulders on a woman are so sexy, so of course I've been focusing on them. But then I've noticing my traps getting bigger and I am def not a fan of that... I didn't really worry about it until my mom said something about it... but then again she's of the old fashioned thinking (and uninformed) that girls who lift weights are going to get all bulky and guy looking.
SOOOO I plan to just keep lifting weights, including my shoulders, because I bet more people will notice your sexy shoulders then your traps. Only you (and maybe your mom) notice the enlarging traps... If they ever get to the point where one of my guy friends (the only sources of pure honesty, girlfriends wont want to hurt my feelings) notices my enlarged traps, I'll def stop doing shoulders! haha so long story short., you're not alone! =) |

| Weight Loss | How long do plateaus typically last for? | Jul 13 2007 03:20 (UTC) |
9 |
| haha mine has lasted a whole year and a half! But I like to think positive about it- at least I haven't gained and losing 20 pounds and keeping it off an entire year isnt too shabby...
I've kept up with my exercise hardcore and my eating habits off and on through out the year. I figure (and hope) that as soon as I straighten out my eating habits and keep it consistant I'll get past this year long plateau. Mixing up your workout is key though. And if you have never weight trained before, starting is DEFINATELY a good idea. Not only will you look good (toned) but it is a very important part of exercise along with cardio. The more muscle tissue you have, the more calories you will burn. Good luck! |

| Health & Support | Green Tea Extract and Birth Control? | Jul 13 2007 03:11 (UTC) |
2 |
| My best guess is it has to do with blood pressure. Like they tell you not to take the pill if you;re a smoker cause the risk of high blood pressure is greater. Green tea extract has A LOT of caffeine so maybe there is a correlation there having to do with BP. I am definately NOT an expert and not even sure but if I had to take a guess I'd say it has something to do with that. Any of you health professionals on here know the answer? | |||

| Oh man, you guys are awesome! Thanks for the ideas!
I am, however, really dissapointed at the enormous caloric intake potentially involved in cow tipping. Now, I don't get to suck the cow's teet after tipping it, damn I wanted my cake and eat it too! LOL! At UCSD we had kind of a take on the robot competition/derby (ours was like a downhill derby for robots) but I can just imagine what MIT's robot competition is like! I just thought of an idea as well... any of you ever geocached? It's great fun and you can do it anytime. www.geocaching.com fun times Thanks again everyone and if you can think of more keep 'em coming... |
