I want to love myself.  I'm tired of looking in the mirror, looking at myself, imagining how people look at me -- and hating it.  I want to be healthy, but more than anything, I want to be happy with who I am.  The way I'm living right now just isn't going to work.

Name: Megs (delve_deeper)
Height/Weight: 5'5''/165 lbs
Goal:  MINI GOAL IS TO LOSE 10-15 LBS (WEIGH 155-150 LBS) BEFORE SCHOOL IN LATE SEPT, ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO LOSE 30 LBS (WEIGH 135 LBS)
Age: 18
Location: Soon to be the UO
Biggest Motivation: I was always a bit bigger than my friends--throughout grade school, middle school, high school... but there was always one girl that we hung around with that was just a bit bigger than me.  It wasn't until this past year that I realized I was now the biggest friend in the pack.  That change, as subtle and over time as it was, was enough to make me feel like less of a person, especially when I was being compared to all of my friends.  The fact that I'm classified as "slightly overweight" bothers me.  I'd like to have a healthy BMI and be in a normal weight class.  I'll always be curvier than most girls, which I love and don't want to lose.  But I'd like to be healthy AND curvy.  With college just a few month away, it's important for me to start now, so I don't get lost in the freshman 15, and so I take advantage of all of the healthy opportunities in Eugene.

In the past when I've gotten up around 6:30 in the morning, I've felt rushed getting ready for school (which I leave for at 8:00).  This discouraged me from wanting to exercise in the morning, and if I don't exercise in the morning, I'm less likely to exercise at all.  This morning, however, I got up at 5:30, kickboxed for 1 hour, and had plenty of time to take a shower, dry my hair, dress, and take my time having breakfast.  In the car on the way to school, I felt GOOD about myself.  Confident.  Working out in the morning is an amazing feeling, and it's bound to make you feel better and want to be more active all day.  I'd give it a try.  :-)

Weight Loss Is my subconscious holding me back? Mar 30 2007
21:12 (UTC)
Thanks guys, for all of the input.  I feel like I may have worded that entirely wrong... I LOVE that my boy loves me for who I am.  I think I'm just insecure--worried about losing him, but more importantly about what I think.  I'm scared that even after I lose the weight I still won't like myself, and after all he's said, maybe he won't like me anymore.  It's silly, thinking about it now.  I'm just human--afraid of failure I guess.  I'm in no way trying to blame him, not at all.  I'm blaming myself, because this is my decision, and something is holding me back.  I just want to find out what it is.  Oh well.  Nothing's holding me back anymore.  I'm on the right track now, and I'm sticking with it.  For me, and no one else.  Thanks again.  :-)

There's a great "learn to run in 10 weeks" post in the motivation or weight loss forum (can't remember which one).  I've modified it, but it can be done on the treadmill, it's easy, and it gets you off the couch and into running mode.  To start out, you walk 3 minutes at 3.5 mph, then run for 1 minute at 5+ mph.  I switch it up, running 5 mph the first time, 6 the second, 7 the third, sometimes up to 8 mph then back down.  You get a great walking break for 3 minutes, so going for 30-45 minutes is no problem (and believe me, I am NOT an experienced runner).  :-)  There's also a couch to 3k program you could google, which gives you a method of running up to 2 miles in a certain amount of weeks.  Hope this helps.  ;-)

Goal Weight After 9 Weeks: 150

*consume 1,200 calories per day at

*follow my SetPoint food chart (to make sure I'm getting a balanced diet)

*drink at least 64 oz. of water every day

*weight lifting Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday with 30 minutes of cardio (burn at least 300 calories on these days)

*1 hour of cardio Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (burn at least 500 calories on these days)

*yoga, pilates, or walking on Sunday  (burn anywhere from 150-300 calories)

Technically, I should lose 2 lbs a week at this rate.  With some extra hard work and a few more strenous days, losing 2 lbs in 9 weeks should be very doable.  But it starts RIGHT NOW.  I CAN DO THIS!!! :-)

I have to exercise in the morning--otherwise I'm less likely to do it at all.  So each morning I set my alarm for 6 a.m. and I put it in the OTHER room.  I have to get up to turn it off, and next to the alarm are my gym clothes.  Next to them are the treadmill.  Run, Megan.  Just run.  ;-)

I'm so excited about starting this... I'll be attending U of O in the fall, living with one of the many avid runners in Eugene, OR, my friend Chelsea.  Before she got pregnant with her baby girl she was running 6 miles a day and plans to get back to that by next fall--right in time for me to join her!!!  I've always wanted to be a runner, so this will be a great start.  I ran on the road by my house and got major shinsplints, so for now it will have to be ok to run on the treadmill.  I'm excited to start!  Wish me luck!

Weight Loss all hail TEA! - the best craving killer! Feb 03 2007
03:52 (UTC)
11
I've been "indulging" in tea for the past week, and I feel amazing.  Whenever I get a craving--for any food--I drink either a tall glass of grapefruit crystalite (I'm not a fan of plain ol' water), 12 oz of hot green tea (I love the slight but unmistakable caffeine boost--and miss coffee), or a diet caffeine free soda (not the healthiest but ulta filling).  These three options have helped me stay sane.  I was doing well for a while, but I'd have at least 1-2 days a week in which I was going way over my calorie limit, and my food choices weren't always healthy.  I'd still be hungry after eating 1500 to even 2000 calories, because they weren't the right foods.  Now I'm stretching my calories out throughout the day and reaping all of the benefits of the beverage.  ;-)
Weight Loss Breakfast ideas under 100 cals? Feb 03 2007

I like to have an egg on toast in the morning.  I toast up some 80 calorie per slice bread, then heat up one or two egg whites with garlic salt and some spray butter for flavor.  Egg white are about 17 calories, so you can have a 97 calorie breakfast that tastes good, has protein, and has carbs.  It fills me up.  There are also mini-whole-wheat-bagels that are 80 cals too, so you can make a bagel eggwhite sandwhich.  YAY for yummy, healthy, and soooo low cal.

GOod luck.

Here is something I started just this past week and it's had MAJOR results.  I've been eating less and exercising WAAAY more.

For every separate food item you eat, do an exercise.

It's that simple. I like to ride my stationary bike but I've usually only been able to get to 10 minutes a day, 20 at MOST... on a REALLY good day.  But just last week I decided to ride my stationary bike for 5 MINUTES for every food I eat.

I'll give you an example. Today I had an eggwhite on an english muffin (97 calories), a whole wheat pita with sliced turkey and hummus (150 calories), and 4 oatmeal raisin cookies (640 calories--sad, I know).  So, I divide that help.  The first two were healthy choices, so I rode the bike 5 minutes for each--that's 10 minutes.  The cookies on the other hand... not such a great choice.  So for EACH cookie I rode my bike for 5 minutes.  So, for 5 minutes whenever I could squeeze it in, I rode a total of 30 minutes and burnt 420 calories!!!!!!  YES!!!!!

This is just one way to get motivated.  Maybe it's not the bike for you--maybe it's 30 push ups per food, or 50 crunches, or 100 jumping jacks.  But it's something.  Chances are, you'll either eat less or exercise more.

So go for it!

Good luck!

Here is a song lyric, but it motivates me all the same... it's from one of my favorite Modest Mouse songs:

<b> "The universe is shaped exactly like the earth and if you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were." <b>

I figure if I want to change I have to MAKE a change.  I can't keep doing what I've always done and expect to lose weight and be healthier.  I have to initiate this and it has to be NOW.  No more straight lines for me.  I'm headed for a healthier destination.

Hi, I'm Megs, 18.  I will be going to college next year... can I play in your club too?  Hehehe.  I'm actually using college as my motivator... I'm hoping that by picturing myself on campus thinner and more importantly healthier, I'll be more apt to stick with this lifestyle change.  I'm 5'5'', 168 (but hopefully on weigh-in tomorrow morning I'll be 166).  Anyway, good luck to all of your in your health-seeking endeavors.  <3 Meg

My boyfriends seems to think he has to convince me he loves me just the way I am... I KNOW he does, but he still tries to convince me.  I've been eating much less (1200 per day) and exercising heavily every day (usually a 300-700 calorie burn).  The other day, we were driving in my car and he pulls out a Reese's Fastbreak.  I LOVE them.  He knows that, so he waved it around in front of me (literally, in front of my nose, trying to feed me) saying "take a bite, babe.  one  bite won't hurt."  I stuck with it, I said no, but he continues to be this way... with EVERYTHING.  I'm staying with him this weekend and I'm worried he's going to try to feed me every hi-cal thing in sight.  Argh.  What to do, what to do... :-(

Weight Loss List: Little Tips and Mind Tricks!! Jan 09 2007
02:19 (UTC)

Here are a few tips I've picked up...

*Drink a LOT of water.

Personally, I'm TERRIBLE at this.  I recently bought green tea to-go packets, as well as Crystal Light to add to my water--now I'm drinking 10-12 8 oz. glasses a day)

*Eat carrots or celery and hummus or salsa every day

I've started eating carrot and celery pieces with salsa or hummus every day as a snack, or with lunch.  It fills me up super quick, and it's tasty too... A HUGE serving is on the verge of 100 calories.  Not bad, eh?

*Exercise in the morning.

If you're like me, you plan all day to go to the gym or pop that exercise DVD into the player as soon as you get home from school or work... and it never happens.  By exercising in the morning  I've gotten a workout in every day and I've been able to make use of my time in the afternoon (or simply relax) without feeling guilty for not exercising.

*DON'T WEIGHT YOURSELF EVERYDAY!!!!!

I used to be an everyday weigher.   I didn't lose more than 5 pounds before I gained it back.  A research study in  Minnesota found that teenage girls who weighed themselves frequently actually gained more weight over a period of time than girls who seldomly weighed themselves.  If you dwell on your weight, you'll only be frustrated with a lack of results (because you expect to lose too quickly).  Be patient.  Be kind to your body.  Focus on feeling good and healthy rather than the numbers--they will follow.

*Love yourself.

I cannot stress how important self love is when it comes to losing weight.  I have hated my body and my self for years.  I finally made a change.  I decided to love everything about me, and respect it.  It only made me want to care for my body in a better way--to lose weight to be healthier, not to be super skinny.  I'm on my way.  I believe in myself.  I love myself.  And that makes all the difference.

***Good luck to all of you.  May all of your health and fitness dreams come true.  :-) ***
