Weight Loss Have you ever felt like you were the fattest person at the gym? Dec 04 2008

Well I actually went to another class this week. My first step class. Let me tell you that even though I am still 30 lbs overweight, I can keep up with everyone! I know I am physically fit although I am bigger. This summer I accomplished an 8 minute mile while running. Anyways, this class I felt more confident. I go with my sister and brother-in-law and they are the most fun people to be around. We had a blast! I was having a seriously down moment on monday, probably because I have been working so hard for so long and my progress feels slow. I feel good now and thank you everyone for all your encouragement. Its so nice to have people to talk to that relate to what the heck you are talking about!

This weight loss journey has been a long one for me. One thing I have come to terms with is that you will have times where you fall off the wagon. It only matters that you keep going. You won't ever go back to your old weight if you just keep getting yourself back on track.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I am just having a weak moment. Normally I am alot more confident than this. I have already lost 30 lbs and have another 30 to go so I should be thankful. Anyways, even with the extra weight I am in the best shape of my life! This particular gym is the one in the core of the city and I know other gyms aren't that bad. Maybe I will try the women's only one closer to my house next time.

I understand how you feel rachelw! I have had a similar thing happen to me. One thing I had to make peace with was that getting smaller was the goal here and not the number on the scale. I started at 199 am now 182. That starting number is from November. I have watched my calorie intake and exercised just as you are BUT even though I expected my weight to have come down faster, I am so much smaller now. I have lost 11 inches off of my waist so far.

Just keep going and if the scale is discouraging you then don't use it. Measure yourself instead. I have a wedding in 4 weeks with a dress that I think looks like a pencil so I understand completely!

    start weight    199
    current weight   182
goal weight    150 (my lean body mass% is 119 so 142 to 150 is healthy)

I eat about 1500 cals or so depending on the exercise I do. Usually aim for a 1000 cal deficeit but more like 500 to 1000 on most days. I do circuit training with weights at least 3 days a week and 4 to 5 days of cardio.

I somehow hurt my back very badly this week so decided to do 1 hour of pilates a day until it is better.

I have a wedding in 5 weeks and am a bridesmaid along with 3 other very skinny girls also all younger than me. The dress is basically shaped like a pencil and I am not! So I am hoping to get my tummy a little smaller,  at least, before that time.

Fitness Anyone using body fat % instead of relying on the scale? Jul 10 2007

Trydrop,   I'm 5'1 in height. Pretty short! Hee Hee! I just started with 10 lb weights about a month ago and don't think I will increase them again, just add more reps. I have no idea if my lean body mass will increase any more than it already has. I will just have to wait and see. All I know is my weight hasn't come down that much but the inches have. I have lost 10 inches off of my waist since November. I found it so weird that I wasn't losing weight that fast so I guess I was just building lean body mass during that time while losing fat as well. Fine by me!

I think to lose body fat for us would be to continue with the cardio and weight training as well as eating regularly enough to keep the metabolism going. And last but not least , patience!
Fitness What "at home" fitness videos does Ev1 have? Jul 10 2007

I am doing a couple different videos by Prevention Fitness Systems with  the trainer Chris Freytag. One video is circuit training (3 min cardio, 2 min weights, 1 min abs in 6 circuits), the other is a personal training video where you pick your cardio and weights yourself. I went to the gym for 3 years and have found that using free weights at home has given me much better results. I plan on trying out some of her other videos soon. She has a dance cardio one that looks like fun!

Don't worry about your weight so much. If you want to look better try a weight routine to tone up. Make sure you eat enough when you lift weights or all your work will be in vain.

Weight Loss Fallen off the wagon this week Jul 05 2007
15:51 (UTC)
Hi riahekans! I too fell off the wagon this week for a couple of days. My husband lost his job and I am home with my 3 kids so his job was the only income we have. I got discouraged and found that thinking about calories and food was just too much for me at the moment. Anyways, I am back on track and feel good. I understand what it feels like to get in a rut. We all do it from time to time. Like Ree said, tommorrow is a new day. Thank God for new days!

A little side note, something I decided to do a long time ago was separate exercise from weight loss in my mind. I exercise for health so that way when I get in a rut I still exercise even if I don't eat right. I have completely changed my body by adopting this plan! Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement everyone. I just needed to vent my feelings and I definitely feel better now. I don't think I will weigh for a while and just keep on the exercise and good eating. I also just recently ordered some body fat calipers to measure my body fat % that I think will be more accurate than anything else.

Alizus, I started out at 199 last November so I have come down in weight since then and my husband says the change in my body has been dramatic. I have lost 10 inches off of my waist since then. I guess I just had a weak moment.

Thanks all,
Sherri

Stay encouraged sonia! I have lost about the same amount as you so far and it makes a huge difference! There is always at least one loser in the crowd. Those kind of guys usually marry someone shallow and wind up divorced a year later! Sound like you have a great guy! Congratulations on your engagement.

I agree with the healthy eating, something which I do. We quit buying all the processed garbage the grocery store is packed with and eat mostly whole foods now. BUT, that being said I am still battling with the scale to move. I also exercise 6 days a week with weights and high intensity cardio. Even though I know I do all that I know is right, it isn't that cut and dry to lose the weight. I know if I stay on this track it will come eventually but at the end of the week when I didn't meet my goal after eating well and all that exercise it can get discouraging. So we have to understand that emotions tie into this weight loss thing as well. I also used to eat all the "junk" you find in the store and grew up in a house where healthy eating was not important. I had to learn all these things as an adult and feel much healthy now for it. We need to be sensitive to those who are on the journey to health and weight loss because it really isn't that cut and dry. If you had of approached me 13 years ago with this, I wouldn't even know where to start with the right kind of food. It was a process of many years of educating myself how to eat to live a healthy life. What I think we need is patience and understanding with each other as we journey toward  our weightloss goals. Longliv its more important to be helpful to those who need our help rather than state an opinion.

It took me months of exercising and weightlifting, as well as learning to eat healthy, before I saw the scale at all. What I did do though was to measure myself. During that time I lost 6 inches off of my waist! Believe me it made a huge difference. Also I noticed my body getting more and more firm. My bum and breasts lifted a noticeable 2 or 3 inches! So don't discourage over the scale. It will come if you are in this for the long haul. I have about the same amount of weight you have to lose so I understand feeling anxious about getting it off. Stick with it and focus on healthy whole foods (not the processed rubbish we see all over the grocery store!). The weights will help you speed up your metabolism and help the inches come down.  I agree with the previous posts about eating sooner in the morning. Also try to eat every couple of hours to keep your metabolism going. No big gaps between meals. If you are starving then you waited too long. Hope this helps.

My breast decided to grow with the weight gain as well! So far I have lifted them 2 inches by weight training and lost all the loose skin that went with it. I have lost 18 lbs so far and that brought them down from a DD to a D. I think all you can do is overall weight loss and if you want (highly recommended) weight train with free weights to tighten them up. I also might add that I breast fed 3 children and thought my breasts were never going to recover. After the weights, they are standing up again! Woo hoo!
Weight Loss Anybody Know How To Target My Stomache? Jun 21 2007
16:13 (UTC)
Are you doing weights or toning exercises? I can't believe how much my skin and core area has tightened up since I started. If you lift weights to gain lean body mass while losing weight, you shouldn't get a big loose skin problem. I used to have loose skin on my chest that you could pull out by at least an inch or inch 1/2. After weight lifting at least 3 times a week along with my cardio, I can't pinch anything on my chest anymore! I also can see bones I forgot about, lol! I hope this helps. It seems to be helping me so far.

I'll also add in that I lost 40 lbs in the past without building lean body mass and had a lot of loose skin. This time my body looks completely different!

Thanks for all your replies everyone! I feel a lot better now. I think I must be retaining water because my face is a lot puffier than before I was sick. I also noticed that this flu has made me feel very dehydrated even though I am drinking a lot of water.

Thanks again
