If you put your hand in an open flame, at what point does it go from "moderation" to injury? You don't consider metaphors or examples as qualified answers even though the logic can be applied in all cases. What you are looking for is someone else to assume your responsibility of deciding that your smoking practices are non-detrimental to your health. You don't want the truth could be why you are asking this on a weight loss site rather than a related site. Now then I am in agreement with you that enough is enough.

I do not have a scolding, factual answer or any help for you.  What I have is a question of you.

From your obvious writing and use of the language I find a very intelligent young man asking a question of which he already has the answer.  My question, just what is it you are looking for???

Sisikoff, you are wise to avoid the "what the heck, enjoy." I did exactly that when I was 30 pounds overweight because I seemed to reach a stand still. The weight wasn't good but I could live with it. The stand still was just my body taking a breather, I am now an additional 30 pounds overweight and it is fighting back against my efforts to get it off. I wont give up but my only weapon is eating next to nothing and moving more. Maybe I shouldn't express my opinion here but I do not believe in a set diet unless you are ready for a lifetime committment.

Jenika, I find your breakfast discoveries fascinating. Both, your choice of foods and your attention to behavior pattern caused by them. I began about 5 years ago keeping a journal of what I ate and how I felt on each given day. It took about 3 years to show beyond doubt that the two had a definite effect on each other. How I felt determined what I ate and what I ate caused how I felt. Giving proof to the need for rethinking of the food desires. We do create the "need" for things we shouldn't eat simply by following our thoughts of the taste. I have proven to myself that a food I think is wonderful can become unpleasant or even disgusting if I choose it to be so. The mind controls everything else ........ why not your taste in food and the need for it?

Lora, it is the easiest task of my new day to answer your question. I am a member of this site because it has good people and I would rather GAIN a friend than LOSE a pound. On the other end of it, for the weight I do things my way. I didn't need help putting it on so I will solo in taking it off. Bottom line I am here to cheer you on!!! Have a great day. Mel

Donna, you know I don't post much because I don't believe in the way America is being ripped off with bogus pills and quick diets. There is only one proven way to lose weight .......... keep your butt moving and your mouth shut. If I am so smart why am I overweight? Simple, I sit on my butt and while my mouth makes the promise, "Someday ............"

Carolf_new, I am a reader of Pollan and I understand he has written 5 books. I would like to have a look at all of them. I sent you a private email but didn't hear from you so I wanted you to know I wasn't ignoring you. Sometimes I write things that may offend someone other than my intended audience so I do it privately. Ask Donna. : )

Hi pollockh, I used to know a family of Pollock from Plain Grove, PA. I live in Hershey now.

Donna, I want to reply to your "why" list in contrast to your reasons. List at least 10 reasons that you want to be healthy and fit.

1- I want to get off all my medicine (I never started any)

2- I want to have energy to play with the grand kids. (I want to be strong enough to hold up to the pounding I get from mine)

3-I want to be a good example for my family (Hopefully I am that)

4-I want to get into my "Goal" clothes. (That was so long ago the moths ate mine)

5- I want to ride my bike up- hill, without walking it up (I just want to be able to get my bike uphill, either way)

6- I want to look in the mirror and smile (I want to look in the mirror without fright)

7- I want to look at my before picture and laugh (I do that at all pictures of me)

8-I want to go to my class reunion in a sexy dress (Not my style!)

9-I want to walk the all night cancer drive (I would like to walk it along side you)

10- Last but not least-"I want my friends to be jealous". (Jealousy is not permitted in my life)

Now list at least 10 things you hate about being overweight and unhealthy.

1- Huffing and puffing as I exercise (I hate that too, so I quit exercising)

2- medicine cabinet that is full of meds. not make up. (None of either in mine, only shaving gear and tootpaste. I think I will grow a beard and stop brushing my teeth .... both of them)

3-Not being able to eat-out without feeling guilty (Not fond of eating out because my wife is a better cook ... of course that is how I got this way)

4- Having to wear stretch pants (I buy new ones that fit and now I have several goals to fit into)

5- Not being able to look into the mirror and smile (me too)

6-Not being able to set on the floor with the kids (I can sit on the floor with the kids, getting up is the problem)

7-Driving my sports car and looking bigger than my car (Ha! I got around that one, I don't have a sports car)

8-Looking in the mirror (I think we did this one already)

9- Going to the big section of the clothing stores. (For me it is either the big section or nude)

10- Being jealous of my friends (Once again, no jealousy)

I know you read it as lightly as I intended, Donna, have a great day.

Reckon it is about time for my quarterly posting. Hello to everyone who has been here and also to the new people. I have started doing my own thing since the diet ideas and do and don'ts didn't seem to help. I was always a thin trim kid, young man, and middle aged man. It wasn't until I was in my mid 50's that I decided to start "eating right" as the guru's warned of forthcoming bad health. Their warning was right on target ......... as soon as I started eating lots of carbs and low fat/no saturated fat, I began losing energy, gaining weight, became arthritic and was diagnosed with lupus by the time I was 60. I was forever hungry and began overeating to make myself feel better about not exercising on account of the pain. On my 71st birthday I said to h--- with this. I stopped reading the health garbage and went back to eating the way Mama taught me years ago. Also she taught me proper amounts to eat. I now have 2 eggs in the morning fried in lard (none of that hydrogenated crap, even if it says trans fat free, don't believe it). Pork chops are enjoyed with the fat fried a little on the crisp side. I eat locally grown range free chickens. I don't like beef and I can't tolerate wheat, thanks to the "healthy eating" gurus. I do not take any medicines or drugs of any kind. It is now 4 months past my 71st birthday and I am feeling good physically and mentally. I think the 25 pound weight lose has had something to do with it. I have a long way to go but I will get there this year. Mel
Weight Loss really high fat intake...? Feb 04 2008

Hydrogentaed or partially hydrogenated on the label should be avoided completely. Even though it is less that .5 gram it is not acceptable. The point being is the serving amout that has it is usually far less than anyone would use. So if there is .4 gram in a serving and you use a normal amount of usually 3 to 4 times that much it makes as much as 1.6 grams real fats. Even .1 is to much. Would you put a half teaspoon of motor oil on your salad just because it wont hurt you but moistens the salad? Of course not so why allow a little of any "poison" into your system?

Twice you have been offered very good advice by another member, have you tried it?  Use a USB keyboard to get around the shorted connection of the PS2.  This can be utilized by a defunct mouse connection as well.  Also the advice that a keyboard can be rinsed with water is true as long as the keyboard is not connected to the computer when you do it.  Make sure the keyboard is completely dry before reconnecting.  The fact a couple of keys worked before you changed the keyboard could well have been the final strokes needed to finish it off.  I very much doubt the keyboard is destroyed, it is more likely the circuitry in the connection.   It is not over anyones head to try a USB keyboard.  Your Mom's computer being a newer one is likely a USB connection ..... try it.

No guaranteed diagnosis without seeing it but I do have 36 years experience in building and using computers.

Jen32966 ............ I think it is fine that you believe "what you saw on TV" and I do believe you saw it that way.  However I think my preference over TV is what I see with my God  given eyes.  I don't know your age but in time you will learn to have more belief in what you have seen rather than what TV or any other source tells you.  I am even old enough to forgive you for calling me a "liar."  I will not post here again.

Thank you Jewelsmcblah.  I was not going to defend my statements but I am glad to see you did so and very nicely.  I am an old man that used to live on a farm many years ago and have witnessed similar happenings such as you mention.  I personally have seen male cats kill any male kitten, its own or others and have tried to breed female kittens, also their own or others.  They are survivors just as nature made them.  I have also seen them torment little critters until they were dead and then eat from the dish of food provided by the human caregiver.  Final point is I post for fun and will not argue with anyone.

i believe as someone else has posted that evil is a human concept but my cat, Panther, makes me wonder a little.  He definitely is a stand-off cat but allows touch when he desires.  The mystery part ...... my wife collects angels and has them throughout the house and grounds.  She also has several crosses hanging on walls and a couple on furniture.  Panther will not bother the angels but on occassion will jump and hit the crosses on the wall until he knocks them down and will shove the stand type off onto the floor.  This is not daily but a couple of random times a month.

Do not fool youurself that cats do not "murder" or rape.  Tom cats will kill their male offspring and rape the females.  This is an established fact.  But then consider that dogs will breed their sisters and their mother.  What does this prove??  Only that dogs behave openly while humans are capable of murder, rape and incest but need to cover it from others.  Personally I trust a dog or cat far ahead of a human.

Well now, you sure showed him how to eat healthy!!!  The lady of the house is doing fine.  She is just starting to need considering getting some weight off.  She is within limit but right at the upper edge.  Used to being thin all her life but age gets us all.  Of course at 57 I tell her she is a "junior" senior citizen.

And then there was Melvin who started eating whatever he felt like back on Thanksgiving and has not stopped yet.  Not over doing it but never the less, doing it.  I almost immediately zoomed up 10 pounds and then lost 12.  Now figure that one out and in such a short time.

I should be ashamed to admit my behavior or lack of in the eating department over the 4 day weekend. I ate enough that I don't have any calories left until Christmas. I am at a point that it would be better if I made my retreat from overdoing a little at a time. To be honest I am in a depressed mood that I don't understand but then I hear that happens to us old geezers. Don't worry it wont get me for long. I will bounce back.

I must be getting ancient, I can't imagine needing or wanting a laptop on my honeymoon????

Panther is a real help when it comes to bed making, just like your cat. Makes the job about twice as long but much more fun.

As for my fall, I am in much worse shape than on the day I fell. Nothing serious, just a lot of twisted and bruised muscles. It is not keeping me down but definitely slowing me down.

I am sorry about not addressing you individually but I feel good about just remembering most of what I read. Please don't feel slighted.

Good morning ladies, (and gentlemen if there are any on this thread)

Thanksgiving was a great day but Black Friday couldn't have been any blacker. We had no power for almost 10 hours because of an underground blown transformer. Sitting in a cold house was bad enough until my cat got outside in the 28 degree temperature and I tried to find him. Ever look for a total black cat in the night?? After giving up I went to step up on the patio and missed the step, twisted my knee and fell full body weight (a considerable amount) face down on the concrete. I did extend an arm to catch me but it folded up like a soggy noodle and all I could think to do was hold my head back to keep it from hitting. The only success I had. The good part is that Panther came running on the patio to see if I was OK. The power came on an hour or so later and the furnace began to take off the chill. Though I keep the house at 66 during the night it felt terribly hot after that cold.

Taking a walk is the best thing to do if you are able. Even if it doesn't speed the weight loss it does lessen a troubled mind.

Hi Colleen, it is fun to read all of the comments but we seem to come and go here. Like myself, I return on occasion to see if everyone is still doing well. Nice of you to admit to an older picture but some of us cheat and use them because we don't want to forget who we were. Have you ever been shopping and unexpectedly walked by a full length mirror only to wonder, for a second, who that person can be?? I am an 18 year old boy walking around in a 71 year old body and many times have been shocked by the "Oh my God ...... that's me!!!!" Welcome to the group.

Actually all my days are for me since I retired.  I don't put anyone ahead of me if there is something I want to do.  My interests have narrowed a lot.  I became sick of sports when they became big money rather than fun competition.  For example I remember when players of all sports had a job during the off season.  Now at a million dollars a game just for showing up took the spirit out of it.  I never thought I would see a football field with 22 millionaires out there being careful not to get hurt.  No other sport is any better.   I love fishing but not from waters that I can't see the bottom in 6" of depth.  So my interest turns to art.  Photgraphy, painting and sketching.  Swimming sounds like fun but not in those waters I wont fish in and certainly not in the public "urinals" treated with chemicals.  Would like to see my days of youth where I could look into 10' of water to make sure it is safe to dive into.

Sue, when you reach my age you learn to put aside those wild emotions and stay away from roller coasters.  I am probably the most calm man you could know.  I have had all the pain life can throw at me physically and emotionally and am burned out on both.  So I choose to ignore them and realize my life is what I make it.

Krismasself, I have decided not to count calories, carbs or anything else. I never did it in my life and I was always fit. I gave thought to what I used to do about eating and this is what I came up with and what I have returned to. I ignored "meal times" and ate only when I was hungry. I did not eat like it was my last meal. I did not eat junk food, helped by the fact that there was not rows of bad choices in the market. So it sums up to eat when needed, eat lite and eat right. I don't need a doctor to tell me how much or what to eat, my body will let me know as it did in the past. Actually I put on this weight in my mid 50's because that is when I became "health aware" and "eating properly." If you detect a little sarcasm you are right. The health guru's made a fortune off idiot's like me.

I just corrected the name. On first look I thought it was a way of writing Christmas Elf but on closer look I see it is Christmas Self. Or I could be wrong altogether.

Zeke, I do not want to make an issue of this I just want to come to an understanding that apparently only Jenna can clarify. In a copy & paste here is Jenna's words: "But thanks for clarifying that, on an average day the meters tell me I burn about an additional 350 calories in various walks, cleaning etc and I have not been upping my allowance to make this up."

To me this reads that she definitely did not add the work out burned calories.

I would also like to clear up the fact that you read things in my posting that was not there. I am not a bear and did not eat all I could while food was plentiful to put on weight to survive a winter. This would create a yo-yo effect. My early years was on a farm of 640 acres and means of storage were used as well as income from harvest sales. My diet was equally well balanced year round. What changed is what I stated, activity. I was born many decades after the "pioneer" era. There was never a "shortage of food" in my family, now or then.

Dusty, I can only offer that which I told Jenna. I truly do not believe there is a universal plan for losing weight other than what is offered here. Counting calories and exercising are the bottom line. I don't believe exercise needs to be wasted at a gym because it can be burned in productive work around the house. When you feel caloric intake can not be cut then try changing the selection of foods. An example would be 3 ounces of ice cream is approximately equal to 2 bowls of vegetable soup. Not to mention the soup making far superior use of those calories. I have already said I have no proven answers so if you come up with a goodie ...... share it. You have given me one good idea already, you mentioned scales. I think I will set mine back to -20 pounds before stepping on. LOL
