Saph,

"Burn 1702" means you will, on average, burn 1702 calories per day based on your weight, height, age and exercise levels.

"Eat 1238" means it is considered reasonable for you to eat 1238 calories per day to stay healthy (assuming you eat nutritional foods).

It will be hard for you to lose since you're already so small.  I do hope you're over your plateau, now.

Sorry for the delayed reply.  I haven't been on here in a while.  Been busy.  :-\

I had a 5k kayak race on Friday (38 minutes) and 5 more 500m races on Saturday.  The rest of the week we watched the kids race (in the 107 degree heat and sun).  I still managed to eat like an athlete, even when I didn't work out like one.  Didn't get any running in, but I did paddle about 10 kilometers.

There were about 20 paddlers in my 5k.  15 of them beat me, but 4 didn't.  Two of the four were the only othey guys in my age category, so I am now officially the Men's Master Class C 5K Kayak Champion (gold medal!) for 2008!  Woot!  (The other two guys I beat were 62 and 74 years old.  13 of the men who beat me were older than me.  The 2nd-place finisher was 50 years old and finished in 25 minutes.)

So I didn't weigh in last week.

Previous week: 174.5

This week: 177

I'd call it normal fluctuation, except it was 180 on Monday.  :-(   I'll get back to serious calorie limiting now.  Can't find time to count these days, but I'll at least pay attention!

Bobev: Sorry I missed you.  Let me know when you're coming to town again.

Congrats to all the other runners, new and experienced.  Sounds like you're all doing great!

Eek!  forgot to post yesterday:

CW: 174.5

We're all getting ready for the USACK Nationals (Sprint Kayak and Canoe races).  My whole family is racing there next week in Oklahoma.  I won't be weighing in next week, but wish me luck in the races!  (Goal is to cross the finish line upright.  Not personally racing for speed this time.)

BobEv:  I live about 5 miles from Suwanee, GA!  Are you only in town for the week?  I'll be in Oklahoma all next week, so I won't get to come visit.  :-(

Phord: What HRM are you using that records heart rate? I might be interested in acquiring one.

I already had a HRM strap and watch I received as a gift.  But I wanted some way to look at trends.  Luckily, I found a data collector for the watch&strap I already had.  I think I found it on eBay.  Google Checkout has 'em for about $45, without the chest strap.

Timex Data Recorder

I figured I'd sell it on eBay again when I got tired of it, but it hasn't happened yet.  But the battery appears to have died last week.  :-(  Time for a new one (CR2032).

Completed wk 1/day 2 of c25k training. Went well. On the last jog, the 8th, I was going up a slight hill and my hr hit 122. I could feel that I was at an exertion level of about 7, I could talk to myself but didn't want to. The funny thing is that on the other intervals my max hr was 115 +/-, then would climb a few beats after the transition to walking, before coming down into the low 90's. Boy the drugs I'm on behave weird... I don't know what to expect. If anyone else monitors hr like I have to (for whatever reason) I'd like to compare notes.

I have a data collector for my HRM. Here's my graph for the Peachtree:

Peachtree Road Race 10k HRM data

My HRMax is around 215. That flat bit near the beginning at 100bpm is me standing around at the start line in the morning sun.

My RHR (resting heart rate) is about 50 bpm. That's down from 65 a few years ago. w00t!

Next month I'm paddling in the USACK National Competition in sprint flatwater kayaks and canoes.  I've coached kayaking a few times, but I've never raced!  Yikes!

Fitness goals? Well, I just started the Couch to 5K program. When I say just started I mean today was day 2 of week 1 for me so I won't be finished with it by the time that this challenge is over but I should be well on my way.

Bubba, I spent 6 months on the "9 week" Ct5k program in 2006.  Week 1 was HARD for me but doable.  Week 2 was hard, but ok.  Week 3 was tougher, and I was so afraid of week 4 that I stayed on week three for 5 weeks.  :-)

Now I run a 5k three times a week, and I ran a 10k a couple of weeks ago.

Good luck, and stick with it.  It works!

But I do love a challenge.  And now I've got "Embedded Linux Kernel Developer" to add to my resume.  :-)

Dudes!  I can't believe I missed two weeks!  I was on vacation last week (such as it was), and just too damn busy the week before.  I'm still too busy to catch up, so I'm just logging in today.

But I will mention I got my Peachtree Road Race (10k) number, so I'm all official now. They say I should train by running 20-25 miles per week for the 6 weeks prior to the race.  Yeah, I don't think so.

Weight Loss Results not typical May 13 2008
15:43 (UTC)
3

You're doing great!

"Results not typical" means this: "Yes, this person lost 50 lbs in two months, but for most people that's not healthy and it won't happen for you.  Unless, like this sample person, you had recently gained 50 lbs because of a debilitating injury or medications, and now you stop and go on our diet regime."

They actually do find muscular/healthy people who have had extreme weight gain for some medical reason to do those ads.  Then they can truthfully say, "I lost 70 lbs in three months!"  But that ain't healthy for most of us.  So, "results not typical".

Don't fret it, though.  6lbs/month is fabulous.  And it's worth it.  And when you're done, it will stay off (unlike after a fad diet where it all comes back).

Congratulations on your new life!

Some people at work call me "skinny Phil" because I've lost so much since they last saw me (different building).  It's bothersome because this is the real me, not some guy who changed only in their eyes.  But they mean it as a compliment, a "hurray for you!" kind of thing.  It's been 18 months since I lost so much weight; I wish they'd get over it already.

That said, I think of it as if they're saying "nice shirt!"  I try not to see it as if what they really mean is, "Finally! you're wearing a nice shirt!"

What if this girl said, "hey, beautiful" or "gosh you're so pretty today!" ?

Man, I wish I had crossed that threshold since then.  But I just hit it again this week, almost 6 weeks later.  No worries, though. I'm happy to be in the 170's again, and I'm still heading south.

Fitness When you exercise May 05 2008

I was eating more (focus on protein) on workout days, and not feeling "guilty" about it.  But my weight loss stalled and I decided after looking more closely that I was eating at maintenance on average.  I was being less careful about counting on exercise days.  I counted, but I didn't go back and look at the daily totals over time.  :-(

I'm back to eating about the same number of calories every day, but I plan my food around my exercise.  That is:

1. No food less than 3 hours before workout

2. Carbs before workout if possible (juice, fruit, etc.)

3. Plenty of water before workout

4. Protein after workout (tuna, chicken, protein shake)

Health & Support Vent- I'm very sad about some people's reactions May 02 2008

First impressions really count.  People who know you first from your "heavier" days will think of you first that way for a long time.  When they see you sporadically, they will always be surprised (again) by how much slimmer you are now than you were then.

I see people from my old job (same building, upstairs, 50lbs ago) about once a month.  Even though I've mostly been maintaining for the last 16 months, they still comment on my "new" weight.  "Hey, it's skinny Phil!"  And "You get slimmer every day!"

I smile politely, say it's nice to see them too, and get on with my job.  If they press, I'll tell them how I'm doing (50 lbs, counted calories, 10 more to go).  But only if they ask.

Weight Loss Are stomach exercises "worth it" at this point? May 02 2008

Amethystgirl is right, as usual. However, I encourage you to continue doing your abs exercises but only if you are also doing some large muscle group exercises. Those will help burn fat. The abs exercises will pay off mostly after you lose the stomach, though posture, strength and stamina will improve in the near term as well.

Phord: I saw your post regarding not being able to exercise this week. It got me to thinking, how does your body respond given a period of rest? When you step on the scale is the weight lower. Earlier posts pointed to idea that muscles when they are in repair mode tend to retain water. If you have had several days of rest it would stand to reason that this retention would reverse leading to a more accurate reading on weight. Let me know what you think.

Actually, that could explain my numbers recently. I had a spike on my weight log at the end of March after going to visit my in-laws (tons of food, there, and no exercise was had by me). But the odd thing is that my spike didn't begin until a week after I got back into my exercise routine. I thought it could be delayed calories or something, but your idea makes more sense: I gained weight from eating, but lost water weight with the lack of exercise. When I started exercising again, the numbers went north. Hmmm...

I think I've also been eating too much in general, "making up" for my exercise so I don't get too huge a deficit. I've probably been miscounting calories as I haven't been diligent about counting every bite or weighing. I've gotten better lately and I've lowered my daily intake a notch at the same time. Seems to be working.

But I only lost a pound this week (after no exercise last week). God, I hope it was calories lost and not just lack of exercise water-weight! :-)

Weight Loss Do I need to eat more to lose weight? Apr 29 2008

Original Post by satupled:

Thanks for the replies guys...now, shouldn't eating less alone make me lose weight anyways? or if I actually eat more, i will help my weight loss?

If you eat less than you burn, you lose weight.  If you eat a lot less than you burn, your body takes corrective action.  It begins to hold onto energy stores, lowers your metabolism, and your weight loss will stall.  So they say.

You should eat a lot more than 1500 calories.  If you can find your body fat percentage, these estimates can be improved.

Your Estimated BMR (calculated at http://phord.com/cc):
BMR=2270 :: RMR=2724

Your customized recommendation:
EAT 2270 calories :: BURN 3121 calories :: LOSE 1.7 lb per week

2 times per week when I'm dieting.

4-5 times per week when I eat normally.

I have flaxseed but I rarely eat it.  Maybe I should try that for a while. It's about a year old.  Think I should get some fresh stuff?

The Lounge transfer files from one computer to other? Apr 28 2008

You may have to turn off your firewalls (Norton is particularly bad about this).

Also, I think Vista Home disables simple file sharing by default.  You'll need to turn it on.  Once you do that, you should be able to see the "Public" folders on the Vista machine from your XP machine.

Nothing built-in to Windows will let you put files in one folder and have them appear magically in another one on another computer.  But FolderShare does this for free, and it works with any computer on the internet.
