Fitness Learn to Run - AGAIN - want to do this with me?? Apr 27 2009

Hey all,  just was browsing through this thread and it looks like everyone is doing awesome.  I did the C25K two (yikes maybe even three) years ago and have been running since.  Currently I am training for a half marthon on June 7.

In regards to jodiferjuniper running outside is harder.  I find that if you increase the incline on the treadmill to 1.5% or 2% it becomes much similar to running outside.  And as another poster put it, it's harder to pace yourself.  Try keeping it slower than you think and you will probably be right on.  The Nike + system is awesome, though my sensor stopped working in 2 months.... so I need to get a new one.

Anyhow, just wanted to say that I think you guys are doing AWESOME and keep up the good work!

There was an article in Runner's World kind of along these same lines.  The person upped her healthy fats and saw a decrease on the scale.  May be worth a shot to read the article.  It was in this months magazine, I believe.

Check out this website for cards...

www.sendoutcards.com/send4life

There are a ton of different cards on there that you can use their sayings or cut and copy your own phrase into it.  Nice part is that the company will stuff, stamp and send the cards for you (kinda like netflix).  Good luck!!!

Haven't checked in lately but in the  middle of October I was 188.4 and today I am 182.8.  That's a total of 5.6 lb loss in about one month.  Not bad but I was hoping and trying for better.......

I am irritated about having to go to Pennsylvania for Christmas just so my son can see his father (who he only sees once to twice a year....).  Forget the childsupport, I would just rather have my son to myself.  (Call me selfish if you will.....).

Plus moving just downright sucks.... I don't know how else to say it :).

Still at 188 (188.4) to be exact this week.  However, did terrible this weekend...so I was lucky it wasn't higher.

Anyhow, tigerlilly....how many calories are you consuming and how much exercise are you doing?  If you have to big of a deficit, your body may go into starvation OR if that isn't the issue than you may have put on or toned some muscle, which is denser than fat, from all the exercise.  Also, if your muscles are sore, they are holding in water.....which makes the scale go up too.  Keep going eventually the scale will go down.  Take your measurements too, so that you can see the loss there also and not just on the scale.  You can do this!!!

It will get better kajikit Laughing.  Maybe try zigzaggin your calories some.  Eat 1800 one day and then 1300 another.  Then your body won't know what to expect.  1.6 is a great loss...just think it could have *shudder* gone up....  Your weight went down, so that is what counts.

In other news, I am down a lb.... but that's after spending the day in the ER.  Nothing terrible, I will survive but frustrating still (see my journal for details).  I really need to work on eating better on the weekends.  This weekend, I think I will clean off my Bf's brother's grill (we usually go up there on the weekends), so that I can make dinners instead of going out to eat.

Here's to the week of clean eating!

I finally made it to the gym last night and got in a good solid hour of cardio.  Between that and not snacking, the scale was actually down two pounds this morning.... Hmmmm...... will it hold?!?  Hope so!

Tonight, I have a training session at the gym.  It's SO awesome.  The apartment complex that I live in pays a trainer to come on Tues, Thurs, and Sat.  Whoever is there during those hours gets a session for free.  I have made it about 6 times now total.  Training that I don't have to pay for!!!  Woohoo!

Anyhow, have a great day all......

I have been here over a year too....  I hit my lowest 174 this summer but with stress, a new job and moving... it's all crept back on.  My goal is to keep myself dedicated to this and to log EVERY day :).  I am focused now and will maintain the focus!

I find that Spanish is the most useful here in the states (especially considering that I live in TX and have lived in CO and AZ).  The best program that I have found so far is called Viual Link Spanish.  I bought it off of the internet and have used it to brush up on my Spanish.  It's a very common sense approach and people have rated it better than Rosetta Stone, plus it's not near as expensive......

Fitness Bike advice please. Aug 21 2007

Bike's in general are so complicated and finding one that fits right is really important.  I bought a Specialized this year and love it!!  The clothes though are equally as important.  At least get some triathlon shorts or bike shorts.  The tri shorts have some padding but you can still move in them and the bike shorts have TONS of padding.

i would do some more shopping around and comparing before purchasing anything....  see what other shop have to say.  A lot of the smaller shops are nice because they have YEARS of experience, whereas employees at the bigger "chain" type of stores may not be the most experienced (not to say that some aren't avid bikers).  Anyhow, just food for thought!  Have fun shopping!

Good luck on your running!  Sounds like there is some pretty solid advice from some runners here.  Nutrition is a really tough thing to figure out because each person is so unique.  As a triathlete, what I have for breakfast makes a HUGE difference and what I have during a race too.  I like the gels but one of the best things I found at REI was a sugar free electrolyte replacement drink called Cytomax (sp?).  (My breakfast is oatmeal and a luna bar with water and then I start sipping on gatorade/sports drink until the race starts.....)  At races, they will have people who are dizzy or sick put salt on the back of their hands and lick it off.  Good luck with finding a solution!
Fitness Swimming? Aug 21 2007

I have spent the summer working on swimming, and it CAN increase your appetite but if you stay properly hydrated and eat the right things it's VERY managable.  Ina pool, you don't realize that you are sweating so your body can lose too much water.  I keep a sports drink by the pool to help with that.  Plus on days that I swim hard, I drink a ton during the day.  I also eat a luna bar/protein bar...half before the swim and half after the swim.  Seems to work for me :)..   Hope this helps!  Enjoy....

hi all!  It's been awhle since I have been on here but I have increased my mileage and speed some.  In regards to the blister issue, I have used band-aid's blister block and it worked for me.  I only get blisters with a brand spankin new pair of shoes and only for the first week or so until they are nice and broke in.

Some interesting observations that I have made over the last few weeks is that I run faster outside than on the inside (I am a freaking watcher, watch the MPH, incline, how long, etc....)if I am outside, I don't even pay attention to that, so my runs are more relaxing.  I was pumping with my arms too much according to on of my friends and that has made an incredible difference that and shorter steps.  Not pumping my arms conserves energy, but why shorter steps would... is beyond me!  Anyhow, just thought I would jump in and say hi and see what else is going on!!!

Fitness exercises with noodle in pool? Jun 18 2007
04:57 (UTC)
I can't guide you to any certain site but I know in college, we used empty milk jugs as weights in the pool.  If it's too hard with them empty add water and that helps decrease resistance....  Noodle exercises we would use the noodles to help with a situp type of exercise but that was all.  Maybe google  aquatic exercises and see :).

Good luck, you are doing great on your weight loss and the pool is one of the BEST ways to get some exercise :).

In regards to your fundraiser, I am currently raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through their Team in Training Program.  It's a great way to raise money and people seem to be VERY responsive.  Dan's right though, it is a lot of work :).

Fitness Is anyone doing a Triathlon? Jun 16 2007

Thanks Panda!  Yep, I am doing a tri on Aug 26.  The lengths are 3/4 swim, 20bike, and 4 mile run.  It's not considered a sprint but it's also not a super long one.  The course is supposed to be great for beginners to (not to many hills on the bike/run etc.).

Nice job on the time Shaven.....  One thing that our coaches have us doing to increase speed and endurance is to do different types of runs.  Once a week we do a long run (usually on the weekend) and then another time during the week, we do a structured type of run which could include:

  • Fartlek (meaning speed play, you run at a comfortable pace and then increase speed for awhile and then back down to recovery or comfortable pacing and continue that over a distance...I have used telephone poles to guide myself at times).
  • Interval training- Designed to build anearobic capabilities so you can hold a fast pace over a longer distance.  You run a shorter distance than say what you plan on racing FASTER than your race pace and then recover by walking and jogging at a much slower pace.  Shorten your recovery time as you can.  Right now, I am running a mile with a recovery of 5 minutes hopefully the end of July I will run a mile and a half with a recovery of say 2 minutes.
  • Tempo running- these runs last at least 20 minutes or so.  Begin by running a few miles as warm up and after warming up, pick up the pace to about 80% of your max speed...hold that for 20-40 minutes and then back off and cool down for 15-20 minutes.
  • Hills- They build leg strength.  Push the pace going up the hills and recover on the way down.
  • Long run- I already mentioned it above,  but this run is at least an hour and you just run at a long slow pace.  This helps to develop aerobic capacity, endurance and strength.
Okay, that's kindof what I know....  I pulled some of the info out of my training manual :).  Good luck...sounds like you are on the right path!

Thank you!!!
