Weight Loss what helps your metabolism? Jan 27 2009

More movement = more calories burned.  So sometimes you can burn many more calories/day by doing simple things like fidgeting.  I read recently that some fidgeters (toe tappers, etc) burn a significant number of calories/day more than non-fidgeters.

This doesn't increase metabolism but does burn more calories daily.

I had an incredibly bad weekend regarding indulgence and food/alcohol.  Back on the wagon!  Just need a bit of balance.  This crappy weather is creating this internal need to comfort myself.  Will need to find an alternative for comfort from food:)

Good Morning Ladies.

Balehead77-Ouch.  Mono?  That's awful.  Hopefully, now that you know what the source of all of this illness is, you'll all be on the road to wellness.  Hang in there!  You've been a great support here and I'm sure we'll all be sending you good juju!  Feel better soon!

No internet access for me this past Friday through Sunday.  I weighed-in at 133.2 lbs Friday.

Oh my gosh balehead77!  Those incidents make for a really stressful 24 hours.  I hope your little guy is on the road to recovery.  You must both be exhausted.  The break-in issues can really bring up a lot of feelings about vulnerability.  I hope you're ok.

Many thanks to all of you for the kind words.  I'm not exactly back to "normal" but recognize my need to take care of my body.  It's the one thing I can control, and should.  I'll only have more problems to deal with in the future if I let this go.  I'm planning to weigh myself in the morning and sort of get started again.

I have another out of town work event this weekend, likely lots of social food and drink expectations (it's business and yes, it's fun.  difficult to maintain at these things).  Will See.

Katydid, welcome to the group.  I'm sure you'll find all the support you need here.  These ladies are wonderful.

How about a Monday - Thursday, stick to it challenge?

Hi!

A commitment to maintenance has been about all I could muster over the last 3 months.  Although I have days of consistent deficit, I end up falling into social or old habits of stress management the other half of the week.

I had a bit of an emotional crisis this summer beginning in June.  I had a surprise pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage (spontaneous abortion).  This was followed by a relationship crisis.  Maintaining my health became my primary concern so my ability to participate with this thread was obviously compromised.  I didn't feel as though burdening you all with my crisis was fair or appropriate... so here I am now.  True confessions, an unburdening.

I've been working my way back to a healthy place with regard to my emotions.  With the aid of close friends, I'm closer and closer to a healthy emotional state.  I have a ways to go but rather than simply maintaining.  Soon, I may choose to work on weight loss again.  I'd like to get myself to a comfortable size again and move on with my life.  Maintaining should be my lifestyle, not a perpetual state of trying to lose.  My health is excellent according to my doctor.  My next and final step would be to get my size to a comfortably maintainable place and put this issue aside (while learning to maintain naturally).

When I arrived at this healthier size last year, I did not pay consistent attention to maintenance believing that I'd gotten to a place where I ate the appropriate amount of food naturally.  I was incorrect.  Here I am to try to accomplish these tasks, I hope for the duration!

Ladies, your consistency of support and dedication to your health has been inspiring.  I really appreciate this forum and would like to perhaps renew my direction here soon.  Thanks so much.  What I've wrote is only an explanation of my recent circumstances.  I'd like to move forward with my life now.  I hope to continue to do that with you all.

Here's a crazy idea.  Just tell her the truth about your feelings.  Let the chips fall.  That is the nature of relationships.

I figure I'm still in maintenance for the time being.  Very much looking forward to a lightening of my stress load.  Just standing happily still regarding my weight management.

Nice job smader and snehvide!  This is very good news!  I on the other hand am busy maintaining.  130.2 same as last week.

Under the circumstances of the past few months, I'm feeling like it is good that I was at least able to maintain.  Perhaps with a bit of stress reduction, I can get back on track to losing.

This one may seem a bit weird, maybe nuts.  I've got some excruciatingly frizzy locks.  The best hair shine and frizz control product is Emu oil... my hair looks more professional when I walk out the door with this than with almost any hairproduct I've ever used.  Only for girls with thick, dry, frizz-prone hair though:)

Happy Birthday Hasta!

OK, It pains me to write-off the entire past month as I see I am right where I started when I joined this thread.

132.  Getting emotional over this is not the answer right?

Here's the deal.  My best top-weight is 125lbs.  My happy weight is about 120/121.  That's not really all that far away.

My struggle seems currently to revolve around social situations.  One social night, off-sets my week long deficit.  This would be fine if I were maintaining but well, obviously the case right now.  I feel in control and out of control all at the same time.  And, I don't want my weight and all things related to control my every last thought, breath and calorie.  There has to be some way...

The Lounge The Name "YANK"!! Aug 22 2008

Hmmm.  Funny thing is, I've never really considered it.  We're relatively insulated from outside cultural epithets.  I'd have to say that I don't have any reaction at all.  I really don't care.

Some non-Americans presume that all Americans are represented by whatever political party is currently in office.  Clearly untrue.  Americans are as unique, person to person as individuals in any other country.  We're not all of the same mind-set.  The idea that a nation's people would use a sweeping generalization to categorize our entire population is just as ignorant as those folks here in the U.S. who categorize all individuals in other nations or cultures as of one mind-set.  Obviously this view is without reason nor backed up by fact.

So why bother relating to someone using a term like "Yank" with any emotion?  It has no relevance to me at all.

Weight Loss Apple Cider Vinegar to aid in weight loss? Aug 20 2008

There is some evidence in the media that vinegar can help lower the glycemic index of higher gi foods.  It aids in slowing the digestion of foods prone to digesting too quickly leaving one hungry and perhaps instigating or exacerbating problems with insulin resistance.  Cinnamon has been shown to do this as well.

Hi Everybody,

Just back from weeks of working on the road.  I'm really pooped.  I have no idea how much I weigh and keeping track of anything was again, difficult at the least.  Will weigh Friday and begin again.

The good news is that I kept up a minimum of exercise fairly consistently.  I'm hoping that if I gained, it was only a little.  Working on getting back to daily tracking as of today.

You all seem to be doing great!  Nice to see all of the support although I'll only be able to catch up on all of the comments later.

Happy Monday!

Weight Loss Why am I so hungry? Aug 14 2008
02:26 (UTC)
6

I like to use a good protein as a snack.  It works better for me regarding hunger.  One example I'm really into lately is greek style yogurt.  Very high in protein.  Trader Joe's fat-free Greek Style is 120 calories and 13 grams of protein.

The adjustment time is tough for most folks I think.  Sometimes it takes me about 2-4 days to feel less hungry.  Truth be told, I am typically not entirely satiated when I'm in a calorie deficit.

Good Luck!

A dark towel you no longer love (it's seen better days) under your bottom can help with the messy issue.

Never been with a man who was even slightly bothered by it.  Frankly, I think most of them are just happy and honored to be getting some!

Weight Loss how long does it take to get used to eating less? Aug 05 2008
01:50 (UTC)

For me, the hunger rarely goes away entirely.  I have found that I do better with about 30% of my daily calories coming from protein, 50% or so from carbs (obviously high quality and mostly veggies and fruits).  I fill out the rest with healthy fats and certainly also have to try and get 30g of fiber or more...  eesh.  Frankly, otherwise I'm pretty ravenous.  It usually takes me between a week and 2 to come to a comfort level:  the right protein/carb/fat ratios for me and some kind of tolerable level of grumbling belly syndrome.

The good news is, when you see that movement on the scale and the loosening of your pants, you start to equate a little grumbling with positive outcomes!  It helps create more motivation and then a successful cycle of manageable calorie deficit and healthy weight loss.

Good luck and let me know if you find any tricks to silencing the hunger gremlins.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry about the late report but busy, busy, busy.  My high season.

I'm at 130!  Argh.  (it was fun though!)  I'm feeling a renewed commitment coming on.  Anyone with me?  How about a good clean Monday through Thursday challenge?

Good to have you back Snehvide.  Congrats Gracelynn, I hit that point last year and it was a good feeling!  Looking forward to getting back to that point.  Going to use you as my weight loss inspiration and compass!

No kids, just a cat.  I know it's not the same in any way but I'm considering adopting a dog.  My dog of 13 years died one year ago today.  I sure do miss him.

On a more C-C note, I'm having trouble committing to weight loss lately.  I feel like I'm getting back on track right now (the past few days).  Whew.  Gotta get myself together here!

How the heck did you end up making films?  In what way are you involved?

BTW, my weight only fluctuated a little despite all of my efforts:)

128.6 lbs (my goal is 127-ish for next week) I have a 10 lb bowling ball to lose as of yet and I'm determined to make this happen.

Oh man, I'm from Michigan too(grew up in Detroit then Walled Lake and lived in Kalamazoo for 17 years) and Smader, I just moved to MA from Madison, WI this past January.  Do you ever eat at Muramoto?  Holy fan-freaking-tastic fusion sushi.  I miss that place so much.

Gracelynn, I love Canada and Canadians.  Used to be married to one.  Was actually dating another Canadian last year.  Now that I'm in the east, I'm planning to do some traveling to Montreal and Quebec.  Can't hardly wait!

I utilize the 10,000 step program (have pedometer, will travel) as my baseline.  This is about 6 miles per day (about 90 minutes) and whatever I do besides (lifting, moving kayaks around, paddling) is bonus.  I try to get it in (weather permitting) prior to 8 am most days.  Due to my schedule and travel time, I pack a lot of movement in during the weekdays because my weekends can be sketchy.

I have a couple of things I've discovered that are important to me so I can stick to the deficit caloric intake.  I need about 30-40% of my daily calories to come from a good protein source. 40+ calories from carbohydrates and the rest healthy fats.  I also try to make sure my fiber count is up around 30+.   Shrimp cocktail (with salsa) makes a super high protein, low calorie snack and it's filling.  I also utilize kashi go lean chewy protein and fiber bars.  13g of protein and 6 g of fiber.  These and apples help a lot when I'm on the road.

Anyone discovered any special tips that may help us all along?

Here are my special hurdles while on the road?  Requisite social time at restaraunts/bars... oy.  Another week long trip of this nature in a few weeks.  The upcoming event involves a lot of walking so it helps mitigate the "party calories".  I also have a thyroid disorder (my special little friend:).
