Fitness How much muscle do you gain in one week? Oct 09 2007

Thanks, all of your information has been quite helpful.

Melkor I will try your suggestions. I like the idea of 8 reps and working up to 12 reps and then adding more weight when 12 reps gets easy.

Caloriecountme thanks for the reassurance, I am glad to hear that you are getting results w/o being sore all the time!

I am not sure what could have caused your bruises, but I bruise easily and my doctor told me to drink orange juice to make the bruises heal. Hope this helps!

That's some good info, but your information has sparked a question...I should be increasing the weights for every workout? I was not aware of this. I guess that is why I did not have much of a change during the last 8 weeks.

I also have another question, if I am not sore after a workout (using weights) did I actually make any progress?

Thanks so much for your help!

Fitness how many minutes should I strength train for? Oct 08 2007

I work out using weights 3x week for 30-40 minutes with a day of rest in between and so far I have not lost weight, but my pants and suit jackets are fitting a but looser. In my opinion 30 minutes of weights at a level that makes you feel like you worked hard is good.

I am tagging this...I want to try it when I get home. I recently bought an Accumeasure 3000 body fat calipers and I used it and got a result (a yucky one--and I am sure it's accurate) but I want to compare my results to those. Thanks for the link!

Thanks for your input...I want to set some muscle gaining goals for myself but I really don't know what is a reasonable goal for a reasonable time period, and if I could break my goal down into weekly increments than I can use those as my progress guides, plus I do better reaching mini goals (weekly or every other week) than larger goals such as a monthly goal.

I looked around online and all I found was ads for losing huge amounts of fat in a short amount of time and nothing valuable or safe to give me an idea of what I should be using as goals.

Weight Loss Best BODY COMPOSITION equipment? (Edited) Oct 05 2007

I just picked up the Accu-Measure Fitness 3000 body fat tester (the calipers) for $19.99 @ GNC and I got the same reading from them as I did the Omron Fat Loss Monitor ($39.99 @ GNC) that they use at my gym. You might want to give that a shot...it's pretty basic, no fancy buttons or thingys.

Good luck!

Do I have to order this e-book? is there a paper format?

There is not a paper format for this book. I was considering printing it all out but tgpish gave the suggestion of leaving it on the computer to make it easier to search through.

Thanks guys for all your help!

Does the book provide sample meal plans and sample workouts for women? This is always where I get stuck, I need some kind of basic plan to work off of.

Thanks so much for your help, I will buy the book today.

Has anyone printed out the book and how many pages is it? I have a feeling that if the book is stuck on my computer I won't use it as much as I would if I had a hard copy of the book.

You should def. concentrate on your upper body and give your ankle a rest. Look up some strengthening exercises online (for your ankle) and give that a shot. Don't try to push it b/c it could just make things worse. Good luck!
The Lounge I am 6 feet tall...what length jeans should I get so it doesnt look like I'm expecting a storm? Sep 13 2007

I am 5'10" and I wear a 36" inseam, like klippe said, it really depends on your inseam measurements. There is two juniors websites/catalogues that sells long jeans and pants. I don't have the links but one is called Alloy and the other is Delias. You will probably have to take more measurements b/c they are juniors sizes, and not womans. Good luck!

Thanks for your quick responses--and yes, my goal is fat loss!

I will def. try the free weights, I have been eyeing the free weight section for a week or so but I am still imtimidated a bit by it all--I'll get over it! haha.

Oh, and I'll be sure to increase the weight when I do lower reps. Thanks again!

Fitness running/achy knees question Aug 27 2007

I also have achy knees but it is b/c of old injuries but my physical therapist told me to ice my knees after I run/jog for about 20 minutes...make sure you have a towel to put between the ice and your knees!

Also, if you have a high school that has a nice running track (rubber) you should try running there b/c of the cusioning, but that really depends on the weather. I agree with the previous poster that you should do some weight training to strengthen the muscles around your knee and stretching is also very important.

Last, there are sneakers called MBT's and they help your body improve posture, they help to strengthen your back and legs but they are pretty expensive--a pair will run you about $245 but for me they have been a life saver, I am able to walk and jog with very little problems but it does take a few weeks of walking in them before you can jog or run in them. Here is a website for them... www.mbt-info.com

Hope this helps a bit!

Fitness exercise during periods Aug 27 2007

I agree with coach_k, that exercise is beneficial during your period... I exercise 6 days a week and when it comes time for my period I experience almost no symptoms at all b/c I have been consistantly exercising. Good luck!

I loved jogging, it made me feel so much better about myself but like someone else mentioned above--I hurt myself too and I cannot jog w/o much pain. If there was a magic pill that would make me run, pain free, I would so take it and jog off into the sunset. haha.

Anyway, good for you for jogging--it is a great workout and gets addicting!

jennyrec- congrats on the weight loss, we are similar in stats!

What is everyone's jeans/pant inseams and where do you all find your jeans/pants. My inseam is 35" and I usually buy my jeans/pants at either The Gap or from a juniors catalogue called Alloy, they also have a website; www.alloy.com anyway I cannot find workout pants, finding workout pants right now is not a pressing issue as it is summer but if anyone knows where I can find some yoga/workout pants or even sweatpants that come in long sizes please share.

Just a tip for those with long torsos...I have a long torso and I have found that the Gap now makes long tops and jackets which works out wonderful, but you can only buy those online. It is worth a shot though.
Vegetarian Considering a vegetarian/vegan diet, need suggestions Jun 11 2007

Thank you so much ladies for your advice! I will check out those websites, and the book you mentioned avesha.

I guess the main reason I want to change my diet is because I feel that I am at a level now where I can take on the challenge of new eating habits. I feel like I need cleaner/more natural foods. Lastly I feel that in the past few months I have been slacking on my diet--I have not been eating good sources of protein (chicken nuggets, and other over-processed foods like Lean Cusines b/c they are easy and convenient) I have been drinking lots of diet sodas and juices (I have found myself feeling addicted to these) and I don't want to drink those anymore.

I am planning on getting up an extra 15 min. early in the a.m. so I can take the time to MAKE my healthy lunch or gather some healthy snacks. I just got caught up with a hectic schedule and I need to get back on track and my original goal was always to go strict Vegitarian and maybe Vegan one day so this is what I will start out with. Thanks again!

I too feel the pressure to be thin because I am tall. I am 5'10" and I weigh 180lbs.  I recently lost 20lbs. but sadly gained 10 back.

I used to weigh 125 and found it to be a little too tiny for me, eventhough I am small-medium framed my weight was constantly commented on. I gained some weight and felt very comfy at 135 and the negative comments turned to positive. Yay! It is very frustrating to hear that I need to lose 45lbs. to get back to 135, it is such a huge number to me that I often lose my motivation when I stop to think how much farther I have to go. What is even more frustrating is that I only had 35lbs to lose but two months of slacking off brought that back to 45lbs. I guess I shouldn't really complain though...there are a bunch of people on this website that have lost 100lbs. and more, so a huge congrats to them...I wish I could get my ass moving like they did.

The motivation from other tall people just might be what I need to get me back on track. I look forward to chatting with all of you!
Fitness Cardio Striptease! May 24 2007
19:54 (UTC)
Although I have never tried Jeff Costa's version, I totally agree with you about Carmen Electra's cardio striptease. I really did not get a good workout with those videos. I will recommend Turbo Jam though, it is a really fun workout and there is a timer at the bottom of the screen that is really helpful in breaking up the warm-up and workout(s) and cool-down--and it's just nice to see the time ticking away as you are kicking and punching. Haha

Thank you, I was just about to post about how I have been losing my motivation and really just angry with the whole weight loss process. I took some time off from calorie-counting because I was becoming really obsessed with calories...and I also thought that some time away from calorie-counting would ease my anger but it has not. Seeing that other people out there are getting healthy is a good motivator though, so thanks again!

Congratulations on losing so much weight!
Health & Support should a woman with small breasts weigh less? Apr 02 2007

Haha, this is pretty funny...so if I figure out how much my breasts weigh I can subtract that from my current weight, and since the human head weighs 8 lbs I can subtract that too and I'll get my real weight. I like this!

Uhh, I'm just kidding but this topic makes me wonder if anyone does do that?
Weight Loss Strategies to survive the weekend! Mar 23 2007

This is how I think about it...I have more time on the weekends to be more active so if I eat more calories than during the week than I have the time for some extra exercise! Also, this sounds super easy but "Think before you eat" I catch myself on the weekends eating something just to keep myself busy b/c I have more time, but if I think before I eat than I can do something else more productive. Hope this helps.

Oh, I don't plan on using a home sauna for losing weight but I was kind of amused/confused/stunned at the absurdity of their claim.  :)

Chances are, I won't get one...my boyfriend already gave me a "look" and asked if I would really find it relaxing sitting in a expensive wooden box sweating...my answer: yes! it would be fun.

This sounds really cool! I also am interested in getting a good ped. for a decent price. I have an office job that requires very little walking so I use my lunch break to walk...and since my office is hidden in the back I can eat my lunch at my desk before hand. I think having a ped. would motivate me to get up and find a reason to walk around the office like someone else said before hand.
