The Lounge Do you have a "hippie" name? Nov 25 2009

I almost named my daughter Vienna, no reason other than I thought it was pretty.  But that got thrown out when  everybody's first response to it was, "like the sausage?" I figured if she ever had a weight problem I wasn't going to be responsible for a nick name like Vienna Sausage.

And if my second had been a girl instead of a boy I was serieously considering Harley Cole... I love gender bending names

wow this is great you guys...I find it interesting that we have all used very similiar methods and you can really tell how much harder the weight is to move the closer you get to maintenance. hmmm..just a few thoughts

I think for long term weight maintanence and probably most of the weightloss/body goals of the people on here you are spot on..more complex carbs fewer refined, etc, etc.  However, for someone who is trying to break a plateau, build muscle, or honestly lose weight quickly,in a short period of time (think getting ready for a figure competition or your wedding day)without starving or sacrificing as much muscle, low carb plus HITT is the way to go.

Motivation How long does a plateau last before it starts moving again? I wonder......... want to lose another 20-30lbs to healthy bmi Nov 07 2009

Watch your carb and sugar intake, focuse on lean proteins and fibereous veggies. While changing the exercise routine is certainly a benefit, what matters even more than that is the intensity. Are the videos that you are doing becoming too easy? What has worked for me realy well are sprints, run like hell for 30 sec...walk for 30,...run like hell....etc for 20 min. the goal is to get your heart rate going.  I promise this is a winner :) let me know what you end of doing

Fitness Kinda Dis-enchanted with lifting Nov 05 2009

I have a friend whose dad trains figure competators and I asked him when I started New Rules for Women if he had any advice. He said the biggest thing to keep in mind is diet, diet, diet, diet...how much, how heavy, how often you lift won't make a significant difference if you don't have your diet down pat. Now I am no expert in weight lifting diets but I do now that if you wan't to make significant gains you have to eat over maintanence and you have to eat a lot of protein. I would invest in really educating yourself about diet, implement that for a year and see what happens...good luck

Pregnancy & Parenting Curious - How does your baby sleep? Oct 11 2009

I coslept and demand fed both of my babies, and I loved it! they would sleep with me from about 10 til 8 no problem. At around three months I started transitioning to a crib beside the bed and then one in there own room. Around five months both my babes would sleep from 8 to 5 eat then snooze for another hour or two. by about six or seven months they both were sleeping by themselves through the night.  The only problem I ever had was that all of the other parents around me thought I was crazy and that I would have toddlers in my bed, which actually has happened to a friend of mine, I think the key is transitioning them out of your bed before they get too attached.

His first wife left him when she was seven months pregnant and pretty much said she never wanted to see him again. I was friends with him at the time (I am saying this because I probably wouldn't totally believe his portrayal otherwise)...Basically it looked and sounded like she was fed up with the same things I am frustrated with as well as the fact that she was really young and I don't think she wanted to be married. Anyways, he stayed in there (she moved out) apartment until the baby was born which he never got a call about, he found out about the birth when he read it in the paper and when he tried to visit she told him that she didn't want him around. He left, moved closer to his friends made some efforts to contact and to talk but she wasn't interested (sometimes he was nice "I just want to see my son" sometimes he wasn't "B'tch I can't believe your keeping him from me" sob, sob, sob) after two years, when the divorce finally went through and child support he ended up paying the maximum, compared to the people we know in the same income bracket he pays almost three times the amount. Probably because he didn't listen to me when I said he needed to go to court and actually fight for his rights and for the level of child support. For the most part it has always gotten paid. I think he has a lot of regrets about everything with his ex wife, I think that he wants to see his son, but thinks that it has been so long (he is four) and that he doesn't want to fight unless he can prove that he isn't the loser that they thought he was. I think that he doesn't want to marry me because it is a way for him to supposedly protect himself monetarily and emotionally.

he does watch the children while I am gone, however, I am fairly certain that his idea of watching the kids means, giving them juice and setting them in front of the TV. And the household stuff really depends on how much I complain.

looking at the bare facts I think that absolutely I should leave him. But, I feel like there is so much emotional damage from his ex, from his family (don't get me started) that I feel like I owe it to the institution of marriage/long term relationships to stick it out. has anyone ever stuck it out, really tried to work on it and had a happy ending. I feel like I am taking this huge gamble because if things don't change I will be miserable. when do you give up?

two years ago he recieved an advancement on his inheritance not a huge amount but a lot. for those two years he didn't work, instead he played video games and half ass'd school off and on. during that time I worked I put everything in the account and payed bills, he never questioned what or how I spent the money (although it is probably because he knew I was responsible). honestly when he got that moeny was when alot of our problems started, he just stopped caring about anything. we had huge arguments about the money I didn't want to tell him what to do but at the same time i felt that he was putting out kids at risk by not working or really truly securing his kids future. but what could i really do it was "his" money.

I think part of what attracted me to him was the fact that he was so much more layed back then me, I have always been type A and he is type D. But now its just frustrating, its one thing to take things in stride another to let life and everything in it, opportunities, friendships, etc just pass you by.

I have suggested counseling and he feels that if it is too the point where you need counseling its over... if I had to guess he would probably go if I made him. I guess I always feel like, I am always the one fighting for things to work out, whether its the relationship, school, work, the kids. I don't know if I have anymore fight in me.

as far as the finances are concerned, he hands me his check, which is about one fourth of our total income I deposite it and he just uses his card and buys whatever he wants, I handle bills, debt and stuff. I recently tried to split the finances and tried to make him get his own account because he kept on overdrawing. He got angry, saying that now that I had finished school and had a decent job I was going to lord it over him.

I honestly think he has some Passive Aggressive issues....

Has anyone actually seen a female cirumcision? when I visited Africa, they had a huge festival to celebrate the young girls, coming of age, and finally being circumcised, the girls weren't upset they viewed it as an honor. and yes I know that this is not always the case. When it comes to male circumcision, with my son and in the absence of any religieous constraints, I did a lot of research weighed the options and made the best medical decision I could. and I wouldn't worry about teasing because quite honestly fewer and fewer parents are having there kids circumcised, its not nearly the issue it was twenty years ago.

I find it funny that the majority of these post sound very American and Very postmodern, not necessarily a bad thing, just very interesting..

I agree with the previeous posters, try changing your calories or your exercise around and see what happens. I know that whenever I start a new exercise routine its pretty typical to see a two or three pound weight gain, your muscles hang onto water more to aid in recovery, so maybe the water gain cancelled out a loss??? Secondly, if you are a girl could it be close to that time of the month? that usually causes a gain to. Whaterver happens, stay healthy, keep experimenting if you are like 99.9% of people in the world your body is totally able to lose weight you just have to play with the numbers

Psyllium, isn't really anything special, its just fiber, it adds bulk and water to stool and helps to push it out, you could get the same thing by eating a lot of vegetables. I rhink psyllium is used in metamucil. if you aren't noticing a difference I would suggest, slowly upping the amount that you are taking. I mix a tablespoon with my morning protein shake.

Weight Loss I am scared Jul 13 2009

several years ago I lost fifty pounds, a feat which I had thought was impossible for my body and the best advice I ever got and took to heart was to eat more, when you lower your calories too severly your body responds by slowing all of your major functions down, I bet if you take a look at your daily activity level,  it has probably lowered a bit as well. Upping your calories reassures your body that it is okay to burn fat, instead of store fat. I would also encourage you in that, sometimes, even with the perfect diet your body just stalls out and the best thing that I have found when dealing with that is to: continue to feed your body nutritional food, up your calories temporarily, change your carbs to fat to protein ratios, change your exercise or take a break from dieting all together.

It took me almost a year to go from close to 190 down to 132, sure it would have been great if I had lost the weight in five months, however one of the great things about losing the weight slowly and learning about nutrition along the way was that I was finally able to break out of the mindset that I had to starve myself in order to be thin and healthy. I have since gained about fifteen pounds back because of pregnancy and losing the weight this time around has been surprisingly easy, because I know my body, I don't even bother with starving myself, I eat healthy, allow indulgences here and there, try to stay active and just let my body do its thing.

I second the sling idea, I purchased a mya wrap with my second and it was a life saver. I went on vacation when my son was just three months old, because of his age and the time change feedings were completely off schedule.  but it ended up not being a big deal, with the sling I could nurse and nobody knew the difference. I could walk around with both hands free completely covered, while window shopping...amazing, that and my double jogging strollers were the best purchases ever.

it is possible that the fear and stress of thinking that you are pregnant is delaying your cycle, it is actually pretty typical and as far as symptoms are concerned there is no right or wrong answer, every women is different and every pregnancy is different. the only advice I can give you is to relax wait a little bit retake a test if you don't start and go from there.

Pregnancy & Parenting My Girlfriend is pregnant and nothing adds up. Please help!!! Mar 08 2009
02:46 (UTC)

As a young mother of two kids I can totally relate to what your girlfriend is going through...finding out that I was pregnant with my daughter ended in a puddle of tears and declarations about how much of a whore I was, etc (all of which lasted for the entire pregnancy). With my son it was off and on of being unsure if I was ready for another. During both pregnancies I pushed people away. My family members are all very successful, educated people and I felt like the "poor white trash" of the family. Now fastforward almost three years since the birth of my daughter and, even though it has been tough I absolutely love my kids to pieces and I have pushed myself and grown in so many areas of my life. the only thing you can do right now is be as supportive as possible and try to understand that not everything she is saying is going to be rational.

Weight Loss Anyone done the elimination diet? Jan 06 2009

just wanted to add a couple more things, after reading some of the other posts. The way this diet has been explained to me is that there is no exact calorie allotment, the goal is to eat till you are comfortably satisfied. Secondly after the initial thirty days the individual is suppose to ease back into a sensible eating plan. One of the big goals in this plan is to ween the body off of its dependence on sugar and reset the taste buds which helps lessen cravings in the long run.

Hey did you get this diet off of figureathlete.com ? They recently had an article about this diet as well as several others. when they described the programs one thing which the site mentioned was that this was a "hardcore" fat loss plan which was only to be used in the short term for a quick jet start to healthy eating...not as a regular occurrence. Secondly, I absolutly love figureathlete.com it is a body building site specifically for women and it has some of the most up to date well researched information in regards to dieting and excercis...now that being said this site is specifically geared towards people who are hardcore, so if I had any problems with the diet it is in regards to how sustainable it is for the masses. Other wise good luck, I have tried several of this sites fitness and diet routines and found them to be very successfull

I too was an overweight child and, at least in my experience, I wish my parents hadn't made such a big deal about it when I was younger, even though they sincerely tried to be "positive". I believe that all you can do is provide quality food and diet information and the rest is up to her. That being said one of my biggest issues with food when I was younger was the fact that I would diet the way my friend dieted which was basically to starve yourself, I would lose a little bit of weight but eventually gained it all back. It wasn't untill cc that I realized the importance of portion control and not starving yourself.

Pregnancy & Parenting Why is my belly not growing? Sep 13 2008
15:04 (UTC)
I was overweight with my daughter and never really looked pregnant until the eigth month, just fatter. With my son I was in really good shape and I still didn't look pregnant, just a bit of a belly til the eigth month. My gyno told me that I have a very supportive pelvis. Aka my pelvis was big so the baby was able to stay cradled in it longer rather then be pushed up and out.

good luck! and it can be done...I was 160ish I think before I got pregnat with my daughter over two hundred when I gav birth. when she was five months I started dieting at 179 and got all the way down to 130 by her first birthday. I maintained for a while and then got pregnant again. I weighed 162 when I gave birth I am now, four months postpartum trying to work all the weight off, I jump around the low 140"s. I had to play around with the calories because I am breastfeeding, but I have found that eating between 1800-2000, drinking lots of water, and working out 30-60 min.  a day seems to work well.
Pregnancy & Parenting Does inducing labor cause the contractions to be more painful? Jul 11 2008
13:06 (UTC)
18
I was induced with my daughter and started naturally with my son. the contractions were much less painful with my son, which was part of the problem. Apparently, according to my gynocologist, most women these days are given some type of drug like pitocin, to speed up labor, otherwise the contractions come and go and may or may not be accomplishing anything. I was eventually given pitocin to help speed up my labor, yes it was "more" painful, but not unbearable and if it helped the processes go faster I was all for it.
