| Weight Loss | Unreasonably high goal weights... why? | Jul 29 2008 19:33 (UTC) |

| Let's not forget how HARD losing wieght is. Every pound can be a struggle. To think of losing 100+ pounds is daunting, and for most not-achievable. Losing 5 to 10 pounds is doable, and then a person gains some confidence and sees that she can do it, and goes from there. Setting a goal weight that in your heart is not achievable is setting yourself up for failure and then.....we all know where that goes. And who knows how long it has been since that 5 foot woman saw 200? It could have been a very long time ago.
gnomeygnome, I don't know who you are, or what your life experience is, but I don't think that you are a very happy person. Anyone who leaves a thread with "whatever" is probably rude, and likes to shame others. I don't think this is a good forum for you. People here are supportive and friendly, and root for another when no one else will. If you need that type of environment, welcome! If not, take it elsewhere. I guess I am just sick of trying to look the other way when someone openly judges another because of the way they look. Try walking a mile in someone else's mocassins, then comment. |

| Fitness | What can I do about all this flab?? | Jun 23 2008 15:38 (UTC) |
|
| Definitely invest in something that is going to focus on strength and toning...not cardio. If you are really going to do the swimming, biking and hiking, those things will take care of the cardio.
You can also get one of those stretch bands with handles. These are not expensive and are very versitale for exercises that will work out upper and lower body as well. You will want to focus on your tricepts and back shoulders to tone the back of your arms where there is the flabbiness. These will give you great shape on your upper arms. Even before you get your videos or strap ( I really hope you get that) you can do this....find a solid, sturdy structure like a bench..something that is 15-18 inches from the floor and won't tip. Sit on it with your legs straight out in front of you, and put your hands at your sides and slide your hinder off the seat. Support your Body wieght with your arms, and slowely lower your butt to the floor. Use your arms to raise you back up and lower again. Try to told for 2-3 seconds before returning to the upper start position. Keep your abs tight for better core support, which will also help take some of the "work" off your arms. After a few of these, your arms will appreciate the help. Try to do at least 8 to start and work you way up! No pain, no gain, my friend, but these really work for me. |

| Actually mixing the two is the best. If you work out 5 days, do two at the higher intensity for a shorter amount of time, and the other three at the lower intensity more time scenario. Current research shows that working out faster/shorter a couple of times vs always keeping it the same has lots of benifits, including weight loss, and also building stamina and better cardiovascular strength. In fact you might find that you have to increase your speed or intensity just to get to your 130 bpm. You should try for 80% max heart rate during these intense sessions, that is to get there and maintain it for a period of time.
Mixing it up helps prevent your body adapting to its environment, where it says ok, I can stay here and do this....but then you won't lose wieght over a long time, it will plateau. But keeping your body guessing really helps this. Good luck! |

| Balance is always the key. But to lose weight you should probably go back to what you were doing, bumping up your cardio. Current guidelines, according to my trainer, is 250 minutes of cardio per week for a female and 300 for a male...that is for weight loss, not maintaining fitness.
And remember, cardio is working at 75-80% of your max heart rate, not just logging time on the treadmill. You really have to get and keep your heart rate up in your target zone for max. benefit. And new research is showing that if you peak a couple of your workouts during the week, that is to really push your heart rate up there for a shorter amount of time, and then work out at less HR for the other workouts but for a longer period of time, that is even better for losing wieght. So, if you have only 30 minutes, get in there and really work your butt off, you will do yourself more good than if you wait until you have that full hour and then work out more slowly. As always, anything is better than nothing! Keep up the good work. |

| Fitness | Is it Cheating? (Couch to 5k) | Jan 17 2008 16:44 (UTC) |

| I think everyone agrees, it isn't cheating. Its only quitting if you don't get going again. The guy on the Podcast has no idea where you're starting or where you've been, he is trying to support your effort, sight unseen. The best guide is yourself. Get to know your body and how it feels so you know where your limits are and when it is time to cut back or try even 10 more seconds.
And remember, near the end, when it feels the hardest, or the struggle is the worst, that is when it is the most beneficial for your body. In its recovery, is when you build the stamina and strenght. So when you're about to hang it up, remind yourself all the pain and agony has gotten you to this point, so you might as well take as much advantage of it as you can. Good luck on your 5k! I hope you experience the joy of the journey! You might pick up John Bingham's "The Courage to Start", it is very motivating and he's been down your road and explains it all with humor and it will help get you through it. He's a hoot, and his penguin analagy is right on! |

| Weight Loss | i hate those days when I can't stop eating | Aug 09 2007 21:20 (UTC) |

| I think everyone has those days...especially when you are on a diet because all you think about is food! I try to have foods that are guilt free like fruit or veggies so that I can snack, do something other than what I should be doing (at work...snacking is a great alternative to typing!) and have something to do with my mouth. That really seems to help get through those trouble times. Good luck! | |||
| Weight Loss | Help! Stupid slurpees! Someone wants to feed me! | Aug 09 2007 20:18 (UTC) |

| Wannabehott, I'm bummed that you gave in the to Slurpee. Next time, put yourself first and ask this friend to find a different peace offering, like maybe going for a walk with you. Although you were within 100 calories of your goal, you deprived yourself of those calories of healthy fat-burning muscle building foods. 1500 isn't alot, and even if your slurpee was 200 calories, and I suspect it was way more than that, even that amount is a healthy dose of good food that your body needs. Quit the excuses and fight for yourself, otherwise you are doomed to failure. Yesterday was your first day, forgive yourself, but try harder next time. There are a million reasons why you should give in to others or whatever, but only one not to...you owe it to yourself! I don't know your age or physical status or what your goals are or how far you may be from them, but I wish you the best of luck! Been down your road many times, and it never gets easier unless you really put yourself first and leave the conflict of it all behind. | |||

| You might consider getting one of those big bosu balls (any retailer sells them) as they are very adaptable to any indoor excerise from sit-ups to pushups. You can also combine them with weights to strengthen core while you are working other muscle groups. I totally hate mine (which means I am using it and it works because I can feel it in those places long after I have completed my workout!), and there is no end to how you can incorporate it into a workout.
I also agree that getting some dvds are a good investment as they can shake things up and keep it interesting, which keeps you at it. Good luck! |

| Try one of the various brands of Jerky. Walmart carries a brand that includes beef and turkey in various flavors. They have a new one that is Brown Sugar maple Ham jerky, and it is awesome! High protien, about 70 calories per serving. Jerky is high in sodium, so remember to drink extra water, but it is a great snack and not messy.
Watch the protien bars, they can be high in calories or not satisfying...you want more than one. |
