| While it is possible that she deliberately surrounds herself with overweight people to help with her own self esteem issues, it is also entirely possible that she is just someone who is very unhappy with herself and has no ulterior motives--she may just enjoy your company. However, obviously you are unhappy with the current situation. I think that hanging up on her and saying "well, what do you think of ME?" is probably a little harsh. If you want to continue the friendship, then explain to her how her comments can hurt you, and you are concerned about her self deprecation. If you have no interest in saving the friendship, then by all means, cut off contact with her and expand your social group (I would suggest the latter anyway, as we all need friends, and usually when we become reliant upon one person we get bitter about it). I have a hard time meeting new people as well. I don't work at the moment, so don't have colleagues to spend time with, and my husband works from home so the same is true for him. A lot of my friends now have rather different interests. We have, however, made some great friends through some online arts-based communities (my husband is an artist), and although a lot of them live far away we try to meet people whenever we can. Could you take any short evening classes to find people with similar interests? |

| The Lounge | Another iPod problem... boo! | Feb 19 2007 11:21 (UTC) |

| This just happened to my iPod Nano, too :( I got it in May. By June the light wasn't working on the screen any more, so it was useless in the dark! But three days before Christmas it just died. It wouldn't charge and there was no display on the screen whatsoever. I tried re-setting it, to no avail.
Anyway, it was still under warranty, so I took it to a shop that does Apple repairs. They said it would take 3 weeks to fix... six weeks later I was chasing it up and it transpired that the courier had apparently 'lost' it, so I am getting a replacement today, almost 8 weeks after I took it in originally! Thank goodness for my tiny mp3 player from the now unfortunately defunct Virgin Electronics that has kept me going over the last two months. |

| The Lounge | I'm sorry, but it has to be done: EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS about grammar | Feb 19 2007 11:17 (UTC) |

| I'm English and we use "lose" and "loose" in British English in the same way they are used in American English. I compared with my husband (American accent with a hint of Bosnian thrown in), and our pronunciation of the two is the same, as well :)
Grammar always sems to spark interesting debates. Generally I like to see that someone has made an effort in responding to a post, which is why I struggle with overuse of 'netspeak', because it seems lazy to me. However, when it comes to grammatical and spelling errors I am sure I make plenty that I am unaware of, so I don't like to judge anyone based on it! Plus, some of the brightest people I know are dyslexia sufferers, and they really struggle with writing. One of my good friends frequently spells 'important' as 'impotent', which (fortunately) makes her laugh even more than we do ;D |

| Weight Loss | 20 or less challenge | Feb 19 2007 10:22 (UTC) |

| Last week was 119.6, this week I'm at 119 lb, which means overall my total lost for the challenge is 5.2 lb. My goal is to lose between 8 lb and 10 lb by March 12th, so I am getting close! It's so slooooow, though! :P
I've decided that I'm not going to be weighing in on this thread any more just because a) Monday is a bad day for me to do so, and b) I am getting so stressed out on Sundays about what to eat and what not to eat, so I am going to go back to weighing daily and just tracking my own progress. But I will report back here when the 12th rolls around to let you know how I did :) |

| Because I was younger when I was overweight I never really suffered any adverse health problems, but I'm glad I nipped it in the bud when I did and am now within the healthy weight range (and intend to stay there).
For me it was definitely more about mental benefits. Since losing weight I feel I am able to stand a bit taller and I think I exude more confidence. That is a big thing considering I was bullied at school for many years and made to feel really worthless. I have to admit that some (not all) of the attention I get from guys can be really nice, although there are times when certain people approach me that I wish I could pull the fat back on like a protective layer!! I met my husband after I'd lost almost 30 lb, and although I think he would have liked me anyway (I hope!) I was confident enough to fly out to meet him for the first time and not be worried about his reaction to me, at least not because of my size. Also as I get slimmer and fitter and become more body confident I have more energy and am more sexually confident, which is a bonus ;) Finally, the change in diet has helped my acne a little. I still suffer from monthly hormonal spots, but the rest of the time my skin looks way better :) |

| I haven't been on it myself, but a good friend of mine was on depo for about a year and she gained about 15 lb. She is naturally very slim and active, eats well etc. But she could not shift the weight despite her best efforts until she came off depo and went with an alternate form of birth control. I don't think she gained weight because of binging, though. I think it was just her hormones sent completely out of whack by it. | |||

| sweet_tart: I also got one of those whitening moulds and use it when I start craving foods late at night ;) It stops me eating while it's in, and it has to stay in for about two hours. Plus it makes my teeth a little sensitive, so I don't usually want to eat anything afterwards, either! | |||
| Motivation | Reward for reaching my goal | Feb 15 2007 00:05 (UTC) |

| Hey sqwish, I too think that I am going to treat myself to a custom corset when I reach my goal :) I think I mentioned it in a similar thread a while ago, but I want to wait until I've reached my goal weight because obviously getting a corset to fit properly is hugely dependent on measurements, so there'd be no point in be getting one if I still intend to lose 10+ lbs as my body will most likely change shape a bit. I am not sure what I want to get... maybe more than one if I can't decide ;D | |||

| Weight Loss | body frame calculators | Feb 13 2007 20:51 (UTC) |
|
| I am always a bit confused by the calculators. With the wrist 'trick' of seeing if your fingers overlap, mine do easily by a few centimetres, even though I have short/medium length fingers. So I am a small frame. Wrist measurement wise, I am also a small frame. But when I do the elbow breadth measurement (which I find really awkward to do accurately, does anyone have any tips as to how to do measure without moving your fingers?? So difficult) I get a medium frame result (usually). I have a smaller ribcage but fairy broad shoulders and wide hips. Furthering my belief that I am a mutant :P | |||

| I find that I have a bit less energy then, too! Apparently when you are on your period your body temperature is a little higher, which means you get hotter more easily. Also, it's only gentle stretching and moderate cardio that's supposed to help with cramps, I believe. With the whole lethargy thing there's nothing to go but get through it! | |||

It goes on but only *just* zips up... really it is too tight for anything other than standing around awkwardly in :P So I will just have to wait until I can move in it ;) I just tell myself it will be sooooo sweet when I reach my goal and it fits great. | |||

| That's all good advice! I add not pushing yourself too hard with anything, especially running. I was getting into a really good groove last summer but took it a bit too quickly and pulled something in my foot. I couldn't walk properly for a week, and it was 3 weeks before I could run again, which totally set me back (and killed it for me for a good few months). It's now something I have to be careful with.
Also, it can be a really bad idea to overwork parts of your body and ignore others. E.g. If you focus massively on your abs, but ignore your back muscles, this can cause problems. |

| I haven't been for ages, but I seem to recall that http://www.fitday.com has various amounts of logging different types/levels of figure skating. I went skating just for fun one night a week for a few months with friends during the summer a couple of years back, and I seem to recall they had various options for logging it there :) | |||
| Weight Loss | need help | Feb 11 2007 16:43 (UTC) |

| Well, here's the problem. I do not recommend that you lose the 10 lb, because whether you lose the weight fast or slowly, you'll still be underweight ;) Here is my suggestion: You could exercise more. Don't just focus on your stomach--make sure you are doing strength training that benefits your whole body. If you don't know what proper strength training entails then look it up. It won't make you bulky, it will just make you lean and strong. Make sure you are doing a sensible amount of cardio. Do not diet. Eat a sensible amount of food to fuel yourself so that you are strong for working out, and also have enough nutrients so that your bones are strong and your skin looks great and your hair is shiny and your eyes don't lose their sparkle (because all of this goes to shit if you are under-nourished). If your waist is meant to be 24 inches, then it will be 24 inches. If not then it won't be, but I guarantee that you will look so good otherwise that you don't care. It's only one inch--it is not worth making yourself sick for. Also, I strongly advise you to re-read some of the advice that you have received from people here as regards your body image :) You seem to be skipping those parts and only latching on to what suits you, i.e. anything that you think will help you achieve an unhealthy goal. Look after yourself :) |

| Weight Loss | need help | Feb 11 2007 16:25 (UTC) |

| Hey, I am the same height as you :) Generally a healthy weight for people our height is between 104 lb and 140 lb. The BMI calculator here is a bit rigid I think and doesn't seem to take into account a wide variety of frame sizes, so I go by the one my doctor uses (which considers healthy to be a BMI of 18.5 to 25). You are already at the lower end, so I doubt that losing more weight is going to help you achieve the results you want. I would really recommend talking to someone (a professional) about your body image troubles, and look into some sort of exercise programme or personal training. It sounds to me like your weight issues largely stem from a bit of teenage angst (hey, I still have it and I'm nearly 25 :P), and in order to avoid these issues becoming really detrimental to your physical and psychological health I think that dealing with them pro-actively now will save you a lot of heartache in the future. You are NOT fat, but maybe you need to tone up? I don't think dieting at this stage is what you need, but by all means if you eat badly then try making some more informed choices. There are plenty of resources on this website to help with that. You said you want your waist to be small--that's fine, but remember that we are all built differently. I have a small waist but I have big hips. Goodness knows I wish I had slim, boyish hips that look great in skinny jeans. Sadly, even if I lost a HUGE amount of weight I would probably still have bigger hips because that's just the shape I am. Don't kill yourself going after something that might be unrealistic for your body type. Finally, yes, a month is extremely fast to lose 10 lb, especially when you are already at a low weight. I do not recommend you lose 10 lb. Healthy weight loss is at a rate of 1-2 lb per week (usually slower). Otherwise it is most likely that you are eating too little. |

| kallie and minbin, your views on Valentine's Day are pretty much the same as my own. My husband is really wonderful every day of the year, so we don't feel the need to 'prove' our love on the 14th because gift card companies tell us to! If I do get him anything it's usually a small token, like a little chocolate from a small chocolate shop, and a handmade card from a stall I go to in a nearby market. We don't go out for dinner on the 14th... I don't see the appeal of having to book weeks in advance only to be herded into a room full of other couples all doing the same thing to be 'romantic'. My husband and I go out all the time together anyway! | |||

| Motivation | Cereal Binger... | Feb 11 2007 00:22 (UTC) |

| Oh, man. It is so weird but BOTH my sister and I find cereal to be a HUGE binge trigger food. I am not so crazy about super sugary ones, but if there is All Bran, Raisin Bran, Bran Flakes, or any kind of granola cereal (yummmmm) or something chocolate-y then I just freak out and eat the whole box. My sister is exactly the same. It is so strange because we didn't overeat it as kids of anything, and nor were we denied. But I'd take a good bowl of cereal over a chocolate bar almost any day. I was talking to a friend recently who made me feel better. She said "Why is it that in the morning, one bowl of cereal is fine, but in the afternoon no less than 3 or 4 bowls will do??" I ask myself this same question ;) I have found that only two things helpe me: One is that I do not buy myself cereal, ever. It makes me sad but otherwise I will go crazy and feel bad about eating so much. My husband buys some for himself, but I rarely have any. I remind myself that it is his, not mine, and if I reeeeally want cereal, I make myself a bowl of porridge/oatmeal topped with fresh fruit and eat that instead. it doesn't have the 'crunch' of cereal, so isn't as satisfying in that sense, but it is carbs with milk and it fills me up quickly, so whether I am hungry or just craving it's a good way to go about damage control. |

| These last couple of months I tried to pay attention to when and how much I gain/retain around my period. I seem to gain between 3-4 lb (which is a lot for someone my size) about 5 days before I'm due, then sometime towards the middle/end of my period it just drops off and I get a much more pleasant number on the scale. it's just getting through that 8 days that is tough sometimes! It can be discouraging. | |||

| Foods | UK people | Feb 10 2007 11:19 (UTC) |

| I wish I knew about the nutritional information for Wagamamas! I've found that the UK is pretty slow in catching up with offering nutritional content on websites for restaurants etc. From my Weight Watchers days I remember a few things about places to eat and not to eat from their Eating Out guide. Never go to Wetherspoons: just one of their horrible dishes is more than my entire daily Points/calorie intake! If you have a Nando's near you that can be a good choice. I have their veggie or bean pitta without the mayonnaise and a side order of corn. I get it pretty spicy and find it very satisfying :)
I eat a lot of Thai and Japanese food when I go out and find it really hard to uncover the nutrional content. I know it would be approximate, but it would help if more restaurants were more forthcoming with this information. |

| Hi Latasharma! As robertlovescss says, the recipe tool might be good for you if you know exactly what you put into your food. I should really make more stuff myself so I don't have this problem... it's so hard to know what goes into foods at restaurants sometimes!
poke-a-nose, thanks! I think the veggies are very low. I had the dish again today and tried really hard to figure out how much it would be. The portion is actually really big now that I think about it. The noodles are low in calories but fairly plentiful, and the calories in the veggies can't amount to more than 100 or so because they're all very low-cal ones. I just have no idea what the sauce used is. I am assuming it is stir fried in some kind of oil... vegetable or sunflower? I put in 700 for my estimate today as I am worried about my intake being too high. I did eat the whole plate today... I was super hungry but felt like bursting afterwards ;) |

| Yes, if you are certain it is physical hunger and not psychological, then chances are you need to eat. If you're about to go to bed then you might want to avoid anything heavy... maybe some fruit or a glass of skimmed milk (milk is supposed to help you sleep, if I recall correctly). | |||

| Motivation | Lack of support :( | Feb 09 2007 00:17 (UTC) |

| Yes, I can only reiterate what others have said, but I think it is most likely that he's just not sure of how to word it. I am sure he is proud of your achievements and hard work, but a lot of guys seem to go through a phase of slight insecurity when a significant other is successfully losing weight. My husband is very similar... whenever I lose a pound and am overjoyed he simply states that he likes me how I am. However, he also liked me 'as I was' when I was over 20 lbs heavier (when we met), and so whilst I am hugely appreciative of his acceptance of me (really, he accepts me much more than I am able to accept myself), I am also aware that he wears the rose tinted spectacles and doesn't always see the bigger picture.
With every pound I lose I get a little more confident, usually in small and often undetectable ways, but with that confidence I think he also becomes concerned. I am not sure of what because I love him to death and reaching my goal weight will not change the person I am, but it will make the world of difference to me just to stand up and feel happier about who I am. I have realised that he will never be as excited about my weight loss as I am, but that's OK. He is reall supportive in other arenas :) |
