| Weight Loss | Time Article: Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin | Aug 09 2009 23:04 (UTC) |
12 |
I was pretty much floored with this article. I kept going "Hmm....HMM....HMMM!!!!" I actually appreciated the independent view the author takes. I thought the part about children and exercise was really interesting. I was a child who didn't like to play outside, didn't really like riding my bike, but then again, I was reading MS-DOS at the age of four. Just would rather be alone or with adults than with other kids my age. But I've never been clinically overweight. My mom would cook relatively healthy meals, and I attribute THAT to keeping my weight within a healthy range. And I don't think you need to go to the gym for 2 hours a day or an hour a day to keep your weight down. I think walking is highly underrated. (Especially when you have a hilly apartment complex ;) like I do.) With that being said, though, people who exercise AND eat less (not starving themselves, just make healthier choices) seem to be healthier overall. More muscle mass, more flexibility, improved cognitive function -- can you go wrong? A lot of this idea of "compensation" is TRULY due to ignorance. I was talking to someone a couple months ago...maybe at my old job...and she said, "I was on the elliptical and it said I had burned 300 calories!" I told her sometimes the machines can be incorrect (meanwhile, I'm thinking the machine OVERestimated her calorie burn...) and she interrupted and said, "Yeah, I know!! I had to have burned off 800-1000 calories!!" I chuckled, and asked her how long she was on the machine. Half an hour, she says. I would go with 250-300, based on what she told me. So based on this logic...she thinks her "true" calorie burn is, oh, 1000 calories for the day. That's a trip to <insert fast food place here>. No guilt. Thinking, "Oh, I deserve this." I don't think it's about getting the mantra, "EXERCISE MORE, EAT LESS!" ingrained in our heads. It's more about providing information. Teaching about nutrition labels. How much you really need in a day, how much you burn in a day, how much a certain exercise burns.

I've got two. 1. The high fructose corn syrup commercials which say HFCS is "just as good as sugar! It comes from corn, it's all-natural!" Oh, jeez. 2. Fat-free half and half. End of story. |

Thanks for replying. :) I shouldn't be premenstrual for another week or so. The clementines seem to be helping and I think I'll try the hot tea suggestion. Phew. |

Last Thanksgiving did you diet clean, indulge a little or go crazy? This Thanksgiving what are your intentions of eating? Where did you have Thanksgiving last year? Where will you have Thanksgiving this year? When will Thanksgiving dinner be served? About how many people will be present? If not home, will you be bringing food and what? If at home, how much of the meal are you responsible for? Whats your favorite Thanksgiving food? Taste preference: Turkey or Ham? Three favorite sides dishes in preference order? Best tasting Thanksgiving dessert? Most over-rated Thanksgiving food? Most under-rated Thanksgiving food? Will you be fine with high cal leftovers around? What will you be doing after eating Thanksgiving dinner? Allowing yourself a gain or not? |

Wow, I'm surprised at how the sheets idea got shot down. It really depends on your relationship, I suppose. Does your boyfriend appreciate practical luxury things like that? My boyfriend and I are both Taureans and he would love nice sheets like that, anything aesthetic. Forego the blingin' Rolex if your man is more practical than that. By the way -- have you asked him? It's not an off-limits question. Although my boyfriend is in the "I dunno..." category right now, so I understand if he's the same way. But since it's your first holiday season together, you might want to just ask him. :) |

Thank you, thank you for all the great advice. :) This is such a big help and I'm glad I posted! Unfortunately, a lot of the foreclosures are in the "hood" over here. I'm really looking at good school districts and I would like a home to start a family. Thankfully my credit rating is pretty awesome right now so that's a big help! My mom has a 15-year mortgage and I know it is definitely possible to pay off my house one day. My best friend and her family paid off their house years ago. I'd like to do that, too. Taxes, home insurance, and closing costs are things I really need to learn more about. The last thing I want is to be blindsided!! |

Oh, what good news!! Thank you for replying so quickly. I appreciate it. I'm sitting here scratching my head feeling like a silly goose for not saving more money (what, when I was 10??). I have some savings in stocks but I really want to save that until I neeeed it. An FHA loan looks like the best choice, you're right, and I'm definitely going with a fixed-rate mortgage. Man. I'm worried about the interest rate but I'm definitely going fixed. Thanks for all your help. If anyone has other opinions definitely respond!! :) |

You'd think it would be some sort of cutscene reminiscent of the Office Space beating of the copy machine, right? But, nah, I'd say, "Aw, come over here, you poor thing, let's get you out of the rain." *wraps scale in blanket and cuddles* Heh. |

Back up. 1. He texts CONSTANTLY while you're togther. I hate that, too, so much. Usually it's enough for me to excuse myself and LEAVE. 2. He's making FAT JOKES? Get rid of this jerk. He doesn't treat you well now, he won't treat you well later. You're better off without him! |

Breasts will sag as we age. I don't care if you wear the tightest bra ever, they'll sag. I've been blessed with a B cup, and I generally don't wear a bra unless my outfit requires it. Or my sports bra, for example. I don't understand who thought it was a good idea to SLEEP with a bra on. Sheesh! *burns bra* |

I've been good thus far...eaten great and everything, but I'm going to a Halloween party in a bit and I'm dreading the amount of beer/cookies/candy that will be there. *sighs* I should have a snack now to fill me up, but I'm afraid when I get to the party I won't be able to resist, and then I'll kick myself for that extra 200-calorie snack before the party. Hm. |

| Weight Loss | Another Zig Zag Post :p | Nov 01 2008 00:06 (UTC) |
|
http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calc ulator.htm There you go. It has a zig-zag option on it. But even if the zig-zagging seems too extreme, you can alter it so you don't eat as little or as much as the calculator says. Let's say on your low days it wants you to eat 1200, and on your high days, 1900. Switch that to 1300/1800. Remember, as much as we want it to be exact, it's NOT an exact science. :) Just try your best. |

I love love love Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kat bars, Twix, Milky Ways, 3 Musketeers....especially the dark ones....Crunch bars... I agree that only the chocolate candies look suspicious ;) Gotta check 'em. But no trick-or-treating for me this year...no kids to call mine yet! I'm supposed to go to a Halloween party...I know there'll be pig-out food there... My mom's favorite is Butterfingers. I would give her all my Butterfingers gladly when I was growing up! Made me happy to make her happy. :) |

Sounds like your body doesn't like this whole 1500 calories a day thing. Looked at your profile pics, and I think you're just plain hungry, my friend. Binge eating isn't a good way to put weight on, but definitely increase your caloric intake. |

I appreciate this post. I agree wholeheartedly. HOWEVER. We get questions like this on the forum because people are not mathematical equations. People are not simple. Usually people who struggle with their weight have a complicated and/or emotional "relationship" with food. It is a process. |

Those commercials are abhorrent!!! Here's a few of them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE5aSUcU3YA Wow. I love how the people don't know what the problem is with high fructose corn syrup is when asked. And they reply, "Why, it's just made from corn!" Next we're going to see commercials advocating hydrogenated oils..."Why, it's just fat!" |

Major red flags here. I had binge dreams when I was undereating and depriving myself. I don't get 'em when I maintain a deficit of 250-500 calories. |

Haha oh, dear. I think it's adorable how concerned you are about the frozen dinners. I think it's a great start, papi, and maybe as you progress you can learn to cook a little! Deciding to eat more "real food" really helped me learn. There are lots of recipe sites, even just stuff at foodnetwork.com will help. :) |

Y'know, I think if you're hungry at night, plan for a snack. I eat at least 6 times a day, every three hours, and it really keeps me from getting the grumblies. Getting too hungry sets me up for temptation! If you're craving refined carbs, your body is probably just plain hungry, but it's telling you to eat the things that will give you energy the quickest (fat and sugar). Plan for a snack! :) |

| I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this, too. I picked up some more yogurt today and saw the "Great new taste!" advertisement. Whoa, whoa, 20 more calories? I mean, sure, it's only 20 calories, but I don't think it's about the number, it's the prinicple of the thing. Or something. Oh, Dannon, I feel somewhat deceived. edit: I also agree with the 4 more grams of sugar thing. That worries me more than the 20 calories. Obviously the 20 more calories are just empty sugar calories they've added...not cool. It is creamier, though. |

| Lol!!! I'll have both kinds of nightmares. I'm vegetarian and I distinctly remember one of my nightmares was someone forcing me to eat a huge serving plate piled high with ground beef. Just crumbled and nasty-looking. Oh, jeez.
Then I'll have the dreams where I'm going down lines of fine restaurants or aisles at the grocery store and buying all this food and eating and eating and eating..... I like waking up and realizing it never happened. |

Whoa, just noticed I typed "my boyfriend" out of habit. We just broke up. Anyway he hates peanut butter. |
