| Fitness | Do good running shoes really make a difference? | Aug 09 2007 13:00 (UTC) |

| I can for a fact that they do. I have really flat feet. I mean ....my trail on a wet beach is a straight line with no arch !!! I used to wear regular sports shoes for the treadmill and general activities and after a whiel my shin started to hurt !! Then I got shoes that have a sole to accomodate flat feet and my feet have been thanking me ever since. I really like the brooks running shoe series. If you want to keep running with as less injury risk as possible ..always stretch and wear good running shoes !! Also, don't run too much on un-even surfaces, very bad for your knees. | |||

| I've tried a lot of genres and what works for me best is TRANCE !! Especially live recorded concerts. I turn the volume up enough that I can't hear any of the noises around me. Helps me concentrate and the beats keep me going. | |||

| Dear Kim, I saw that you have made some progress on your weight loss,so congratulations. If you feel you are at your wits end, just compare yourself with the you a few months ago and how you have come so far. Now with Love, I can relate to how you feel and I don't consider myself a great advice-giver but maybe this will help. First off, if you think -ve, then your normal sense of judgement is blurred and even good things seem bad. Someone will see you for who you are and for them, it won't matter what the weight scale says, cuz it really doesn't anyway. What the weight scale says is just a temporary inconvenience. You will get over it and you will be loved and it will be better than you can ever imagine. It might sound like a fairy tale now, but it will turn into reality once you start being happy with yourself. |

| Welcome Amber. Just as with anything, don't judge yourself. The fact that you are trying to make a change is an achievement by itself. I'm sure you realise how many people go through their lives without ever questioning it. To break out of that cycle is an achievement. Change should not be too much too soon, especially when it is a lifestyle change. So go easy on yourself and make the slow changes and let your body and mind adjust to it. Don't let anyone tell you that the changes you are making don't matter. They do, to you and you will be happy about them. Isn't that all that matters :) |

| I think one of the problems is that the classifications are a bit tangled and there's always an endless argument about holier than thou. It would be nice if we all appreciated our choices, just the way they are and try to appreciate the good about others, even the ones that aren't Vegetarian. I've been a (Lacto) Vegetarian all my life and I do have the occasional cake or Rennet based Cheese or Yoghurt with Gelatine. Whatever happened to, I do the best I can, without imposing my beliefs on somebody else. |

| There's usually salad and such or just plain bread. You stop by a subway or summin on your way back of course. My experience with such places is grab a drink, socialize, enjoy the ambience and leave food for later.. or better yet do a pre-emptive strike and eat before you go :) PS ...I've been a veggie all my life ..so I'm used to this stuff :D |

| hey dude/dudette, Slow it down and concentrate specifically on what you are doing. Also take in to consideration what you are now and how it has been in the past. I can relate to your situation and I'm sure a lot of us can. The good thing is you've started talking/thinking about it. Now its time to change it into something positive. And you will do it. Post us more details and take us through in super slo motion ..kinda like Keanu Reaves watching the Bullet in the Matrix :) |

Hey Soulmia, Nice to see you here. I'm indian too. With food choices, we are spoilt way too easily. But, if you look beyong the regular there are a lot of good choices and often, some that don't come by easily in western conventional food. First of all, we have a lot to give when it comes to Ghee and the nasties, that in itself boosts the calorie value of a otherwise healthy peice of healthy carbohydrate food (Roti). I can understand your statement of looking towards the heavens and asking that question, but in my experience, I've found better answers, when I looked inside and asked myself those questions and answered them honestly without trying to judge myself. With food choices, have a lot of whole grains, lentils (daal) and beans (rajma, chole etc). Some of these may be a challenge gastronimically to be consumed everyday but once you get used to it, it should be fine. Also supplement this with a healthy serving of low fat yoghurt (dahi) once or twice a day. This also helps in digestion thanks to the healthy bacteria in them. If a majority of where you eat is at home, you can make the transition rather easily. I'm a vegetarian, so I limit my domain to that. Eat lots of veggies and when making curries, dont shy away from the spices (they're only bad if you fry them in oil). Use small amounts of oil for sautee` and don't use too much milk fat. Losing weight is a painfully slow process, but you have to realise that it is a lifestyle you are trying to change not just how much the scales show when you stand on them. Exercise, start off by doing as little you can moving into exercise that is incorporated in your daily life. That is, you don't have to go too much out of your way to do it. These incidental exercises are generally the ones easier to stick. For example, going for a walk during lunch or walking from work etc. At one point in time I used to weight about 130 kilos then rapidly down to 96 and then fluctuating since then on. From November 06, when I was about 114, I concentrated on just eating right and enjoying my exercise for most part of the time and I'm now down to about 101Kilos. The difference between before and now is that I know this time it'll be slow, really slow, but I'm okay with it. And in a way, its best that it happens slowly so that we recognise the will, effort and perseverance we put in to getting something that we really really want. All the best ! |

| hey purpski. I can sorta understand what you're goin thru ..all that effor and for what ? In a way, its bad that we take our focus off health and go into looks, its inevitable, but its also imbribed in our mind that a healthy look is such an such . Fact is, you are getting healthier and healthier as we speak. Sometimes I think about this and get a bit down. But to me, now, it feels like just any reason to feel a bit low. Because on any other day, I'd be cool about it. Anyhow, dont think of that too much and stay beautiful. | |||

| Somethings are prolly diff for dudes n dudettes and I used to be like that ..sensitive when people commented on my weight n stuff .. But now, if it is meant to be a joke of any sort, I just laugh it off sarcastically .. the point is don't take it too seriously ..and dont let yourself be affected by random people. Maybe its just me, but for me, the biggest critic is me and no one can match me. So for everyone else, its just a smile, sometimes sarcasm cuz i know the inside and outside are really really different and the people who cant differentiate that, God help them. Dont take these things to heart and remember, the world, at large, barring a handful of people who know and love you and lovely strangers you haven't met yet, is full of insensitive jerks. Be calm, and install a spam filter in your Cerebral System :) |

| Dear Meggy, The same could be said but about women watching men with washboard abs and the lot. But the fact is, most people with common sense who choose to watch porn know that its just something that is a fantasy, like a piece of fiction, which sure, sounds great, but we know it doesn't exist. What I"m trying to get at is that and I'm sorry if this comes out wrong, but maybe its your insecurity, to me it seems like your boyfriend really loves you and am sure has no desire to have you look like a cheerleader. In fact, he would love you the same regardless. A person growing on you is one of the most wonderful feelings in the world and yes initially, at least for me, I would say that appearnaces do come across as being obvious. But, it only lasts for a very short time. As you start knowing someone and realise that they are super cool people, everything else, the fluff, doesn't really matter any more. Some basic things will help, like a decent dress sense and carrying yourself with grace etc, but they have nothing do with "looks". Its more about how you comfortable you are with the physical you and the mental you. My 2 cents, if you know you are a good person, don't doubt it and don't doubt the people who love you. |
