Fitness Best Gym Equipment To Use For Losing Overall Weight Jul 16 2009

Of course there is a perfect machine. I own the patten to the Ronco nuclear butt cutter! It slices dices, puts the kids to bed on time and comes in 4 different flavors............... Keep it simple!!

Lunges done 3 ways will get great results. Take a step, knee touches the floor and then bring both feet together. Kind of a half step lunge.

The next lunge is smilar to the first exercise. You stride forward, the non striding knee touches the ground, then rise and stand with your feet paralell......then the have your feet touch together for a second and go into the next lunge. Example Rite leg steps out left knee hits the floor left foot touches right, then left leg strides out to lunge.

Last one is tough. Lunge right fully, and go into a left lunge no standing erect to make it easy. These will make you walk like a Texan for a few days but get the legs in shape.  Good luck with you program. Read other threads about how to exercise and there are tons of articles and references you can get here.

Unfortunately for the rest of you readers the Nuclear Butt cutter will not be available in your area for some time!!!! Cheers

Fitness Sugar Craving After Working Out Jul 16 2009

If your body depletes its stored sugars and carb from the prior day, meaning you work out on an empty stomach you body will crave sugars, some people even salivate thinking about foods.  It is great you do cardio on an empty stomach, it can tripple your fat burn and allow you to continue to burn fat for upto 45 minutes after your work out.  I recommend you eat food and fuel your body for weights if you desire to get strong and or build more muscle. More muscle means you will burn more calories and help you to cut fat off of the body. I use a coffee with a fat free ( make sure it has no hydroginated fat or hydroginated anything in it) creamer and it cuts my food craving in seconds without my eating anything harmful to my program.  Sounds like your dedicated, not sure if you are the guy or the girl in the program, but you both look fit. Good luck

Fitness How to eat when trying to get some muscle Jul 16 2009

You have been given some good ideas here. Let me give you my simple approach. I am dieting by eating clean foods. Mostly fruit, grains, salads and a multitude of proteins.  I have kept my protein intake at 200 grams per day. In 2 months I have gained about 8 pounds. Prior to my change in diet, I weighed between 200 and 207. After my diet change I gained to 212.  My arms increased in size by 4 inches. My waist is down one to one and a half pant sizes.  After working out I look great.  I have eaten like this for 2 months.  I will begin a cutting diet for one week which will consist of fish, chicken and lettuce for 7 days. Coffee will be used to keep my energy level up. Twice per day I can get a protein shake.  This will help me drop water just prior to my leaving for vacation. It is a cutting diet I used when I was a competitive powerlifter. We used it to make weight prior to a meet. If you need work out routines read some of Melkors journal entrys(you will have to email him to be a friend) and you can develop some great routines.  Best of luck to you.

Fitness Grip issues Jul 10 2009

Grip strength is a matter of using tools and techniques. As a competative powerlifter my deadlift was 615. I did lock outs, which is setting up pets to hold the bar in the squat rack. Set the pegs above the knees and pull weight to the top of the thigh. I was able to do up to 1000 pounds over time doing this technique.  You can lift much more from the knee to the thigh vs. floor to thigh, (dead Lift).  I also used wrist straps to help lock in my grip until I could develop the muscle strength in my arms, back and grip to pull the bar.

A second tool we used was to hold yourself from a pull up bar and time it so you have to hang on ultimatel for one minute. If you master this then push for 2 minutes.  Good luck

Use these tools and you will kick ass. First, do not look at the scale, It simply wants to mess with your head. Write down all your food everyday, record your water. Drink a min of a half gallon. It you do not have results that feel better in two weeks.  Example fit a pair of shorts that were slightly too tight or pulled at the pockets. Find a thread of success. If this doesn't happen do my next step.

Eat Salad and chicken 4 times per day for one week. You will feel like crap from the low energy, so drink coffee, sodas or if your are real bad, use a weight loss energy drink or pill. Careful these can be harmful. It will force you to clean out your system.

Go to the gym or run a mile min. each day, make an effort during this one week oh hell. Take a before photo and after photo......This is mandatory and you will feel better.  The threat of having to do this program is what has kept me on track for the last 3 weeks. I am not perfect, but if I was I wouldn't be here. We are a team helping each other win a common goal. Let me know if I can be of assistance. best wishes

Weight Loss I'm ate 900 calories yesterday when I normally eat 400, and I gained .5 pounds....? Jul 05 2009

Canabalism:  When you underfeed your body, you release an enzyme that has the sole purpose of breaking down muscle to consume the muscle as protein.  It is why many runners have an emaciated body not big chest like a powerlifter or body builder.  Listen to your friends, you need to live on much more than 900 calories or you will become ill. To little protein can cause bone problems.  And if you started your diet with a pot belly, you will lose weight through starvation, but you body will sculpt itself to a smaller version of you with a smaller pot belly. It will sacrifice muscle before fat.  Adding protein to protect the muscle, fiber to clean the body and colon are essential.  Lastly, working out allows you to eat all you want, but be sensible and eat healthy food.

Now with that said, lets go eat a snickers bar! Just kidding. It has taken me a ton of exercise and diet to begin to regain my old body (which was fit and cut) I am not there yet, but like you I get support and help from this message board. Cheers

Motivation Wednesday's are always a challenge..... Jun 19 2009
03:49 (UTC)

We all have our demons. Here is what I am doing with hopes to get myself back to where I was.  I add exercise. Meaning for me, alcohol at the end of the day is my big vice. I like a pop or two. Problem is alcohol turns into fat no matter what, it is an empty calorie.  I work out and burn the calories I consumed. So a double or two drinks may cost me 380 calories which is an extra 30 minutes of cardio.  If it was a full proof system, I would not be dieting and not drinking for the next month or so.  Anyway, you can walk off and burn some of that breakfast. Good luck Wednesday is the middle of the week, your tired, burnt and wishing it was Friday. It's fairly common to have slips mid week. Hang in there.

I am not able to run due to an injury, but I am able to do the precor elyptical. I usually monitor my heart rate. I work it up to 140 beats per minute and hold it for a full 2 hours.......Just seeing if your paying attention. I hold it for a full minute and then go back to a slow down pace of about 110 beats per minute.  The longer i work out the longer the high interval heart range is held, mean it takes longer to cool down.  I listen to fast paced music while I do cardio and heavy metal when I lift weights. It's all good. cheers

Tough question based on factors. Here is my best guess. You are probably burning according to my "lose it" program on my iphone about 224 calories per hour. If you are up and down alot, it may vary. I would you your walking pedometer and see what shakes out at the end of each day.  Keep up the good work.

You have quite a lot of complaints, my friend. I lost the use of my right ankle last year and had an artificial ankle implanted over a year ago. I will never run again. I work out, but no more runners high, mountain trails  or surf runs. I simply walk and will limp for life. Im not bitchen, its better than a peg leg, pirates patch on my eye and a parrot on my shoulder, but to be able to run a 5 k race Ouch that would be good.

I hope you don't take offense to my note, but you are one lucky sob to be able to run.  Enjoy your gifts, rain never melted a runner. I use to love to run in the rain, the world thought I was crazy, but if the body didn't cool down, the rain never harmed me.  I never got sick.

I hope you go for that run! Have a great day.

Weight Loss i gain weight v.fast . Help!!?! Jun 13 2009

a body can hold 8 pounds of water due to retention from menstruation or too much sodium as well as any allergy or cold pills. Water is key in helping to flush out the sodium and drop the bloating.

I suggest you read posts on this web 2 times per day, eat an extra salad per day,add 7 pieces of fruit, no banana per day for about 5 days and watch your system clear itself. If your colon is not clear, you can feel awful. The fruit will help.  Like you, I too am trying to get my body back in shape. I have always lifted weight and been strong, but now I am fat and strong and want to get my pounds off. I like this site and all the support it has to offer. I hope this will help you to feel better. Try my suggestions and let me know how they work for you. I am going to add you to my friends list, so you can email any questions. I think helping you will in turn help me.

Best wishes

Weight Loss The somewhat minor annoyances of being overweight -- what are yours? Jun 13 2009

I can relate to all of these posts, I hate seeing myself in the mirror as a fat person, having a pair of 38 jeans when I couldn't comfortably fit 36's. Not  being the ripped athlete I use to be.  I hate the mirror, it shows me that Im 52, and need to drop 25lbs.  I related to the comment about having someone talk about your butt. I had a guy at the gym I work out ask "hey Mike, how long did it take you to make that gut) I am just getting my act together to get back on the road to good health. I have been off this site for a while and am glad it is still offering people with weight issues a place to talk and share. Thanks

Fitness I eat healthy, I exercise extensively but I have gained weight? Jan 10 2009

I Recommend you measure yourself and watch your measurements not necessarily the scale. Second idea is you increase your good fat and your water intake.  Here's why. When trying to drop, my trainer told me that when the body holds fat and your doing everything correctly, your body is talking to you. We found that by adding flax seed oil to my diet, my plateau ended and I began to lose weight. Water is huge too. Your body needs to learn that you will give it plenty of water, if you skip on water, your body may hold water.  So 8 glasses per day for 3 weeks and tell me what happens. Now if you pee every 3 minutes take a gallon of water and pour 1.5 oz of orange juice into it. You body will think its a food and hold it longer before letting it go. (old powerlifting trick), by the way when you do go, you'll be in can for a long time. Let me know how these ideas work for you. Make sure you journal everything you eat. Also check on salt content. too much and youll hold water. cheers

Your comment more common than i had realized. Like you many of us fight the same issue. Alcohol, is relaxing so your day ends fast and easy. I find without it, I look for a desert where normally I don't eat sweets.  I am counting my calories, eating alot of lean cuisines for all meals plus a big salad, working out for 40 min doing cardio minimum 500 calorie burn and lifting weights 3 days a week. The result for me has been a good start to drop the puffiness and feel better.  Good luck, try doing extra cardio to burn what you consume as a goal.

Booze sucks as far as weight gain. It takes over a week and up to two weeks for some women to drop the water. The comment about water is good and cutting salt will help your body drop. Lots of cardio to sweat out the water helps too.  If its a constant part of your life, the calories are empty and can cause a quick body fat gain.  It is my worst demon and I have cut it out for a few weeks and Im feeling like my old self again.  Good luck with your diet. First of all, Congratulations on making a choice to change. I am an early morning person, here are a couple of ideas. Go to bed an hour early, if you need help in getting up early. It takes 3 weeks for your body to readjust to your new alarm pattern of sleep and waking. I use one of two methods. On days I can work out with a partner, I book an appointment to meet them to work out.  The next approach I use is while my family sleeps, I am out the door at the gym and getting it done.  By the time my son has to leave for school, I am back home, eating and getting ready for work. both help me, good luck

Fitness frustrated Jan 05 2009

Two issues come to mind. Stuborn fat, which will take time to drop. The down side to dropping fat is that fat is melted from your entire body. Spot reduction is a myth. So your chest will get smaller and your going to feel a proportional reduction, meaning your thighs may always appear big.

The second is simply genetics,if your body is designed to have wider thighs, I would guess you are your own worse critic! Chances are if you were to approach most guys they would say you look great. Not every guy is hung up about dating a model.  Some guys prefer a girl with a little meat on her hips. Again, as a guy, we can all pick on something. I am working on trying to regain a once ripped body. Will I get my14 inch arms back and flat stomach, maybe, but the cost is tons of work. And I was never happy with my stomach, I even did lipo and it left me feeling like one side looked better than the other. Now my friends and family said my criticism was all unreal, simply in my head. This may be the case with your own obsession of your thighs.  You sound like a nice person that is too hard on your self

Exercises. Lunges with weights or without, stairs, lots of them and even running can help burn excess body fat and may be your answer. Best wishes to you.

Fitness 23 with arthritis - help me with my fitness - anyone have advice? Jan 04 2009

I have arthritis and had to have a full ankle replacement as a result of it's taking over my joint.  I am still limited due to the replacement and was given a choice of loose the foot or accept the ankle. I was a power lifter and dead lifting my claim to fame. So you start with a mental adjustment that you can be fit, just not in the ways you use to be fit.  I am working on the stationary bike, using pain meds to do elypitial and the pool is awesome.  The pool is a pain as far as time consumption so I do it less than I should.  I do sitting weights, using machines instead of all the free weights I was so happy using as a competitor. None the less you can get in shape and drop the 10 pounds. I gained 10 but lost some muscle mass so I am on a new campaign to loose 20+. It can be done, but watch the calories, don't drink and keep a journal.  If I can do it, you should be able to kick ass w/ a little help. Good luck

To build muscle you must tear down muscle. This means you need to work out, then feed the body properly. You sound new to all this. So here's a basic game plan. You do light weights, say curls using a dumb bell or bar bell. You will do 5 sets of 15 reps or until the 3rd to 4 set hurts so much you can't do all 15 reps. If all 5 sets of 15 are a breeze, then add weight. To break muscle you must fatigue it to the point of failure. For you failure is success. Directly after the work out and I mean in the 1st 45 minutes take in a high carb and high protein shake. You will consume 1 gram of protein for every pound of body weight. Do this for 6 weeks and email me how large your arms are. Take pictures now and measure your arms, chest, waist and stomach. Do abs every day. Work outs should be 3 days per week. chest and tri day one skip a day thendo back and bicepts skip a day and do lets. 3 days of lifting and 3 days of cardio will make you strong and healthy. Good luck M

If mom is anorexic changing diets is not the answer. Is she still overweight. What is her bodymass index say? We need more information. Is mom still grossly overweight? The main concept in losing is simple in theory and difficult to always apply. If your body burns 2000 calories per day and you eat 1700, you will lose one pound every -3000 calories or in this example every 10 days. If you eat 2300 per day and only need 2000, you would gain a pound every 10 days. I hope this helps you and mom. cheers M
Weight Loss Is it more effective to work harder or longer? Jun 20 2008
01:54 (UTC)

First of all, Girl take a breath. Hear some ideas and with all that energy and smarts you will take off and get it. 1. Your body will burn muscle and fat if you work it too hard and long. Long distance runners tend to be bone skinny with no chest of upperbody definition, if they don't take in enough calories and protein. I have preached this at cc for years. Too much exercise and not enough protein, the body releases an enzyme called a catabolic enzyme. It's job is to dissolve muscle and convert it to food for your body. You system canabolizes muscle to provide the needed protein your body craves. this is why your body creates a smaller verson of yourself

"I've lost nearly 20 pounds but I still look like a smaller version of how I looked at 140. Still the same back fat. Still the same stomach fat. Still the same inner thigh fat. The stretch marks have not gone anywhere. All of those imperfections are still here. It's like I've 'shrank' but I haven't gotten any 'smaller'. "

If you work out too much you won't preserve muscle. Plus You will crash at the end of the day and not be worth a damn, so keep it in moderation, just like food. Many over eaters have an all of nothing personality. When they start jogging, they start hoping to run a marathon by their second week of exercise. Too high an expectation can be a down fall. Same with food. if you are too strict on your diet, you mind will snap (or at least my mind will) and demand all the wrong stuff. Lift weights 3 days per week. Back bicept dayone, chest tricept day two and legs on day 3. If your jogging on the other 3 days great. Take one day off to heal is what I think works best. Start adding 100 grams of protein to your diet and watch your physique build muscle and not look like a smaller version of the old you. Sorry for the long answer, but you asked some heavy duty questions. Cheers M Ps if you have questions feel free to email me.

Ab pulls are not fun. Sounds like what you have. It takes time to get them back on track. Let it heal for 3 weeks. Stretching by arching on a medicine ball will help, but go slow or it will kick your butt. Once the 3 weeks has passed go back to doing sit ups with body weight only on the floor. Have a friend hold your feet down. Don't go back to crunch machines until you can rapidly crank out 50 sit ups with ease off the floor. cheers M
