Dear Shannon,

I feel like I have known you and your family personally over these last two years.  I have used Chris's story as a teaching opportunity in my geographic information systems classes on several occasions to keep his search alive in any way I can.  I was just beginning to put together a spatial profiling poster for an international conference hoping that one of the 15,000 attendees would recognize his picture.  My heart is absolutely broken to hear that your son was finally found but no longer with us.  My prayers are with you now and will continue to be.

If there is anything at all that I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask.

Shannon,

I was glad to see the article about Chris this morning - I still have him in my Google News alerts so I got an email with the link a few hours ago.  My prayers are with you.

Thanks ladies -

I'll be using my little George Foreman grill too.  I think I'll try meaganmeagan's method first to see how I fair.  clairelaine's method looks equally promising - I'm just trying to avoid freezing because my whole purpose of pre cooking is to be able to quickly prepared meals with chicken during the week.  Sadly, anything that has to be defrosted stays in my freezer forever.  Of course I'm assuming that cooked chicken in the fridge for 6 days is safe.

If there are any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks!

meaganmeagan, when you reheat - do you just put the tightly plastic wrapped chicken in the microwave?  or do you unwrap or pierce the plastic?

Hi Shannon,

I haven't been on in awhile,  but wanted to let you know that I've been thinking about you and your family.  In September I told a group of undergrads about Chris and how his disappearance can be investigated with spatial profiling.  I gave a similar talk last month to a group of grad students and researchers.  It's not much, but we just need one person to recognize him or his car.  I'm seriously thinking about putting together a poster to present at a conference in July.  I'll keep you posted.

Hi Shannon -
It's been a long time since I've posted - I sort of fell off the workout band wagon when school got completely out of control.  I think of you often and so do my students.  I still have a few from last September that ask about Chris and if he's been found.  I'll be teaching the same course again this summer, and I'll be sure to feature his story.  It's a great way to teach spatial concepts, and I'll have a whole new set of students looking.

God Bless -

Hi Shannon -
Just wanted to let you know that I'm still thinking of you and your family.  I read the most recent article in the SUU Journal:  Coan search cannot leave public view

We had a midterm in our GIS class last week, and one of the questions was to describe one of the GIS applications I discussed in a lecture given October 11th.  About half of the students described Chris's disappearance.  Our class is down to about 65 students, but that's still 30+ that have been thinking about the story for the last couple weeks.  Students from the summer class occasionally ask me about Chris too.  One student asked - "He seems like a nice guy, do you think he'd pick up a hitch hiker?"

I still have hope he'll turn up.  Several weeks ago someone posted on this thread the possibility that he may be with a group of festival people, and that people have disappeared for months camping out in the wilderness with these groups and then return at some point.  I'm hoping that might be the case here.  Possibly he met up with some people leaving burning man and went with them.  I'm really surprised his truck hasn't been seen anywhere.   I think the pictures of his truck are equally as important as the pictures of him.

I haven't been checking his myspace page as often.  To be honest, I've been bothered that his friends haven't left him that many messages.  His girlfriend hasn't left one since his disappearance, and it doesnt look like any of his family members have left any heartfelt messages asking him to return and letting him know that it's not too late to come home - he's not in any kind of trouble, and no one could possibly be angry with him no matter what his reasons are for leaving.   Just because he hasn't logged in since September 3rd doesn't mean he's not still checking his myspace page.  He might be checking it the same way I'm checking it (without signing in - just going to www.myspace.com/fearandloathinginlasvegas) and thinking "Gosh - it took 2 weeks for anyone to even post anything".  You know you can leave him a message on his page - all you have to do is ask one of his friends to post it for you.

You're in my prayers.  Don't give up hope.

Shannon -
I can't believe Chris is still missing.  I worked Chris' disappearance into two lectures here at UCSB, and the students that heard the first lecture back in September still ask me about him when ever I see them on campus.  The new students who got the lecture on October 11th will likely write about his disappearance on their midterm because they have the option of writing about one of the GIS applications I talked about in the lecture.  GIS stands for geographic information systems, and I used Chris' disappearance as my last example of how GIS can be used to create a geographic footprint of a missing person.

You're in my prayers -

9/28: 136 lbs

Wow - this week was the epitome of stress - I probably shouldn't cheer about losing 5 pounds in one week, but I'm still excited to have p0nda as my twin.  School started, I'm super poor (typical grad student life), and it looks like we're going on strike.  It's possible I lost the extra pounds due to bloating last week and running at different times of the day when I've been so consistant with morning runs.  So stress with a little shock to the system.  In any case, I totally wasn't expecting to lose 5 pounds this week.

Our map needs some work - I was using an application that can no longer support all the requests to google maps, so I'm going to write my own kml file and host it on my personal website later today.  I'll post instructions on how to view our final map soon.  It'll still be a google map, you'll just have to copy a URL into the google map search box to view it.  I should have done this from the start, since I'm totally capable (but lazy won out to capable).  :o)

You can also expect a longer post from me along with an update to our original post as well.  Please check back - our goal is 200 pounds -

Also, thanks for all your heart felt appreciation for the challenge.  I really appreciate it.  If you want to stay in contact, pm me your email address and we'll stay in touch, or add me as a friend and I'll do my best to keep up with my journal.  I know I couldn't have reached my level of success without each and every one of you.  You've been the most effective motivation I've had thus far.

Have a great weekend everyone - and I look forward to your final posts!

Hooray for jodibeatty/ipodgal!
I hear ya.  I gained a lot of weight over the last few years - I was up to the low 170s at my highest.  I had not tried on my knee high boots in a few years.  A couple months ago, I couldn't zip them up.  Just this week after dropping down into the 140s over the summer thru walking, jogging, and paying closer attention to my food choices - I can finally fit into my boots again!

Just thought I'd post a reminder to everyone - tomorrow is our final weigh in for this challenge.  For some reason, I've dropped a few pounds this week already, which is unusual.  We'll see where I stand tomorrow morning.  I think the stress of school sped things up a bit along with having to shuffle my schedule around to keep my miles up.  I try to jog at least 15 miles a week.

Please don't be late with your final post because I may not be checking later due to my amazingly crazy schedule that actually starts today.  I'm looking forward to all of your success stories and stories of your own personal inspiration to continue getting exercise and sticking to the healthy habits you've managed to develop this month, and over the last few months for those of you that have been on this journey with me.  My big goal is to not let the holidays ruin me which is what typically happens every year, and to not let school completely take over, which is what happened last year.

See you all tomorrow!

Hi Saphyre -
That was me that mentioned that Chris may have ties in Orange County.  I don't know this for sure - this is just information I gleaned from the comments he had left for friends on MySpace back in July.  Just guessing, but I think his mom lives in Riverside CA.  One of his brother lives in Oregon.  I emailed a local public access show in Los Angeles and said "ties in Orange County" to get the host's attention.   Chris mentions going to the beach, which is typically one in Orange County when you're coming from Riverside.  I do know he went to Venice Beach in Los Angeles though because he mentions that in one of his comments.

I forwarded the missing poster to my friends in San Bernardino County, and I used Chris' disappearance to teach a few spatial concepts in a lecture I taught a few weeks ago, so several undergrads at UCSB know about it.  I'll be giving that lecture again on October 11th in another large lecture hall to about 100 undergrads.

Every little thing we can do is helpful.  It just takes one person to see his car.

Thanks for your reply -
I really wanted to drop most of the weight first before I started seriously weight training, which is essentially what I did, but others on this site will disagree with my methods.  I still have some fat stores larger than I'd like them to be in the normal areas women tend to have them.

I've always heard that the more lean muscle mass you have, the faster you metablism will be which in turn will contribute to weight loss, but I guess I've just been afraid to fully commit to this approach because I know the cardio way works for me.  It's kind of like doing tons of ab exercises to build up a six pack that you can't see because you've got a layer of fat and water on top of them.   So I do prefer the  "lose weight first, build muscle second" approach.  I may never have well defined abs because I'm probably not willing to drop down to an ultra low body fat percentage, but I think I'm capable of doing what it takes to see more definition in my arms and legs.

(Sep 19-25):  15.5 miles

I ran this evening to keep my promise to myself to run at least 15 miles every week - I missed my morning jog.  I call the evening runs "chasing the sun" because the last thing you want to do is get caught up on the mesa in the dark!  On Wednesday, I saw a friend from my department running, and here's a little dramatization I sent to him:

A missed opportunity for greatness:
It was 8:23am on a cool overcast Wednesday morning in September when I came blazing down the service road that led up to the oil tanks.  My mind was chanting my "strong finish" mantra as my heart pounded wildly in my chest.  As I neared the end of my 3.75 mile route I saw another runner striding quickly down another tail in the distance.  He seemed to disappear into the brush, then with lightening speed he effortlessly glided past the community gardens and down onto my path.

At this point I had began to transition into cool-down mode yet when the tall athletic one flew by on my left, the erg to suddenly spring back to life and sprint with all my might to keep up with him flooded my mind.

I called upon my muscles, yet they would not respond to my desperate attempt to the channel the spirit of Carl Lewis to propel me the mere 200 meters I would have needed to sustain in order to seize this opportunity.

Unable to spring to action quickly - the giant athletic one was out of sight in a moments time, and probably all the way home, eating oatmeal, and finishing up his dissertation before I was even able to reach the end of the service road.

...to be continued.

Chris' last name is Coan.

I tried something a little odd today.  I sent an email to John Kilduff.  He has a public access TV show that runs in the Los Angeles area, and it's the most off the wall thing you could possibly imagine.
http://www.letspainttv.com or you can do a search for "lets paint" on YouTube to find clips.

Tons of people watch it, and he has quite the YouTube following.  I figured it wouldn't hurt to try to get Chris' missing poster shown on his show.  Perhaps there are others who read this thread that can get in contact with local public access TV shows and request a moment of their air time to show the poster.

Here's what I wrote: (feel free to copy any of it your want)

Hi John,
I heard about your show on KROQ one morning when I was cruisin' down the 405.  It's so hilarious.  I hope you have the means to keep it going.  It's destined to become a cult classic.

I do have a heartfelt request, and you have no obligation to oblige me.  A friend of mine is missing.  His name is Christopher Robin Coan.  We are trying to do everything we possibly can to find him.  He's only 18 years old, and he's been gone since September 3rd.  It's been really daunting attracting media attention.  If you are at all able to post his missing poster up on your show for a minute or two, I would be incredibly appreciative.  It really would mean so much to all of us.  Your YouTube postings are so popular, and I can only imagine how many lucky people get to actually watch the broadcasts live.  At this point, we're looking for all the help we can get.  He went missing from the little town of Enoch, Utah - but he has some ties in Orange County.  I was going to attach a pdf of his missing poster, but since you don't know me personally - it would probably be best that I don't send an attachment.  You can read about Chris, and download a high quality pdf of his poster here:  www.findchris.org

John, thank you for taking the time to read this email.  I know it's a rather odd request, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Thanks for catching my error kraka - it's fixed, and I updated aoasancortez as well - we are on our way to 200 lbs!

If anyone else sees a mistake, let me know.  Go to the map, click on your point - make sure it's all good.  Some times I type too fast for my own good.

And for gribbish - you'll be down in the 200s before you know it.  My psychologically all-important marker was 145.  For my age and height, that's a BMI of 25 which finally put me in the healthy category.  I was so excited when I made that goal.

Hey Team!
Our map and original post has been updated.  I dropped a few more participants this week who hadn't posted in the last two weeks.  Here are the highlights:

Congratulations to gribbish who made it down into the 300s - I know that sounds weird, but last week you were in the 310s, so you need a shout-out.  Also, congratulations to norseoracle who made it down into the 260s!  We're down to 50 participants - can we get to 200 lbs for the month?  This is our last week!

Lets finish strong!  If each one of us loses a pound this week - we'll be really close to reaching the 200 pound mark.  I know we can do it.

I'll post my final weight some time on Friday morning, and do the final map update and original post update on Saturday morning around 8:30 am pacific standard time.  I won't be able to carry the challenge over into October because school starts this week and I'll be too busy to manage the data, but I'll really miss all of you.  You're a fantastic bunch of losers!

Alright team - this is our week to go out with a bang!  I'll see you all back here on Friday  :)

Fitness Calorie/Heartrate Monitors Sep 22 2007

I have the Polar F11.
Love it.  It calculates VO2max too, and I upload my work out information directly from the watch to my computer and on to their polar personal trainer website.  My body is pretty dead on with the 3500 calories equals a pound.  My F11 motivates me to burn at least that many calories each week to reach my weight loss goal of a pound a week.

Polar makes several different heart rate monitors.  I went to their website and went with the recommended heart rate monitor for weight management.
http://www.polarusa.com/consumer/weightmgt/pr oducts.asp

I use pretty much all of the features it has including the polar personal trainer website where I upload my recorded workouts directly from my watch to their website via infrared or sonic link.

I wanted to get the most features I could afford at the time, and I've been really happy with it.  As starffy says, the V02max is important.  I thought it was the OwnZone feature on my F11 that calculates a target heart rate zone for me during the first 5 minutes of my workout, but it's actually the fit test I do every other week or so.  I'll do it tomorrow morning to see if I've improved since last time.  It takes about 5 minutes with the F11, and you just try to lie still.

Even if your heart rate monitor doesn't have this feature - I still think they are incredibly worthwhile additions to anyone's fitness program.  Knowing what heart rate zone you are in without having to grab hold of the sensors on the treadmill at the gym is really helpful.  This also allows you to workout outside and easily keep tabs on your heart rate.  A stadium stairs routine is a lot more fun with a heart rate monitor.

Oh boy.  Did I just say stadium stairs were fun?
I'm sorry.

Edit:  clarification about VO2max

I have a Polar F11.  I can't live without it.

I have little faith in the cardio machines at the gym because they don't allow you to enter very much information about yourself.  Today I went to Spin class, and afterwards I spent 25 minutes on the treadmill.  I didn't enter anything about myself when I got on the treadmill (gender, height, weight, age, max heart rate, V02 - all things my F11 uses).  The treadmills do pick up the signal from my chest strap, so I watched the heart rate monitor on the treadmill to see if it was in line with my heart rate monitor, and it was.  But*  the total calories the treadmill said I burned in those 25 minutes was way off!

It's the best investment I've made.
Safina, I don't use mine as a pedometer.  I map out my routes ahead of time in order to know the distances I run or walk.  I use mapmyrun.com, or google earth to do that.  There are particular models of heart rate monitors that calculate the distance and even the speed you've traveled for you, but the added expense for the GPS capabilities don't seem worth it to me.  If you really want one and are willing to pay nearly $300+,  check out the Garmin Forerunners.

I've been the cardio queen all summer, and I think heart rate monitors are essential for this type of workout regime.  I'm getting ready to transition to a more balanced workout with weight training.  I'll be curious to see the range of my heart rate during weight training and how many calories my heart rate monitor calculates for a strength training session.

9/21:  141

Hooray!  I can just taste the 130s....so close, so close.  Let's see...the last time I was in the 130s was probably 2004.  The last time I was in the 120s it was 2001.  I set my long term weight loss ticker to 125, but as I'm starting to slim down, it's less about the pounds and more about a few pieces of clothing that I really want to fit into again without the dreaded muffin top.

pleniscenta and gribbish, I hope you feel better - it's starting to get colder here and I'm worried about catching a cold too.  I may have to stop running outside and switch to something else.

christalrae, I need to drink more water.  I'm going to take your lead.

sara-tink, look at you go!  You're only 1 pound away from your Sept goal!

soph_a60, it might just be water weight - there's still one more week of this challenge to turn things around

lifeizsweet, I bet if you switch things up a little bit this week you'll see the scale move.  You might change your work out routine, or pay closer attention to your meals.  You'll start losing.  We all hit a plateau every once in awhile.  My plateau was 158 lbs, and I stayed there for nearly a year.  I started losing in June when I changed my workout routine, and made a few simple changes to my food intake (like not eating pizza on campus anymore, and never skipping breakfast)

thighs!  you were on fire a few weeks ago when your anniversary was right around the corner.  We're going to have to pretend that it's your anniversary next week so you can kick it into high gear again!

brandin1 - you're very welcome!  I've said many times before - I had tried many things to get rolling with the lifestyle changes I wanted to make that I knew would lead to long term sustainable weight loss and overall improved fitness, but it wasn't until I joined a challenge that I really started seeing any results.  I really like the little communities we built to support one another.

rebepi - don't you even give me a sad face - your successes thus far are so inspiring.  We're all so proud of you.  Month after month you've really stuck with it.

singzjazz - 18 pounds is amazing!  How much is the new puppy contributing to the current weight loss?

I've lost a total of 17 pounds since the end of June.  I'm pretty excited and I feel so much better, but it's not extremely noticable.  Only a few people have said anything.  I just thought I'd share that for any of you that may be disappointed that you haven't received any comments about the changes you've made.  I'm about a size 10 now down from 12 to 14.  I think people will start to nice when I'm down another size or two.  My friend's daughter did notice though.  She's so cute.  She said "wow!  your booty's not as juicy anymore!"

Fitness Sore leg Sep 19 2007
05:16 (UTC)
It depends on what kind of soreness you mean.  If it's just tight, you need to do some serious stretching.  Sitting in a warm bath might help a bit.  Sometimes your quads feels tight and sore because you need to stretch your hamstrings or vice versa I think.  I don't know how true that is, but it's worked for me in the past.

On the other hand, if you have tiny hairline fractures and you continue to subject those bones to high impact exercise - you are going to cause a world of trouble.  You can be defiant now, but you'll regret it later when you find out that you could have just rested for a week but instead you're out for an entire season.

If this pain seems weird to you in any way, you should really have a doctor take a look at it.  Maybe get an x-ray if you've got insurance to cover the cost, or pay a visit to the sports physician at your school.
