Health & Support Bad skin - any advice? Nov 21 2007

I struggled with bad skin as a teenager. If it’s really bad I do recommend looking into Accutane – it’s a pretty harsh drug but it does clear up sever acne.

You could also look into the contraceptive drug Yasmin – I have been on this nearly a year and have had perfect skin virtually the whole time.

Also look into Dermalogica products – they are excellent. Find your nearest Dermalogica beauty salon and get a facial and get them to face map your skin and pick out the products for you. They’re really good.

Hello I would like to join! I’m currently 147ish (68kgs) and would love to lose at least 8 kgs if not 10 (so 17.5 – 22 lbs).

I’m terrible at staying motivated and the hardest things for me are (a) portion size (I’m very greedy) (b) my sweet tooth and (c) alcohol – I live in London and pub culture is big here. I’m also a carboholic which doesn’t help.

I exercise regularly doing Body Attack and Body Pump classes and I’m also trying to train for a 5km run. I’m not much of a natural runner but I managed 3km the other day which was a bit of a record, so not long to go now. I do find that exercising makes me hungrier though.

Anyway I’d love to get serious about losing these extra pounds. I don’t have Thanksgiving luckily but I am spending a week in New York for Christmas so I’d like to make some headway before I do that! Then I have a two week summer holiday at home in New Zealand in March so if I could lose 10lbs before I have to get inot my bikini I would be pretty pleased.

Good luck everyone!
Weight Loss 25 pounds or less to lose... Oct 10 2007

Hello I?d like to post on this thread to keep me honest! I have been posting on CC for a bout a year or so now I haven?t been that vigilant? I started at 155 and now at between 147 ? 149.

Would love to make it to 128 - 30 before next summer but my mini goal is 138.

I?m 26 and 5?5. My biggest enemies are my afternoon chocolate fix and the demon drink ? I live in London and it?s a boozy city!

I usually work out 3+ times per week, but I really want to up that to 5x regularly. Did BodyPump + 40 minutes cardio on Monday, and tonight will do Body Attack. I?m off to Paris for 6 days tomorrow as well so I can?t much being achieved in the way of weight loss in the next week!

I agree with both of you on this one. Sure spirochete is right, working out a proper weights programme is probably a better use of time in terms of gaining results.

But knowing me, I would lose interest/motivation half way through, not push myself to lift heavier weights etc. So I wouldn?t gain results at all.

With Pump, I do a 50 minutes workout, I really push myself (nothing like a Les Mills instructor barking at you to get lower in your squats to make you push yourself!) I enjoy the class as it?s set to music. I even sing along *cheesy*. I?m from NZ and am now living in the UK. One thing I miss is being a member of a proper Les Mills gym. Nothing in the UK comes close.

That said, I?ve been travelling and haven?t; been to a Pump class in 6 weeks. I am going to DIE.

I don?t think it?s muscle as I have always exercised doing weights ? I only just started upping my cardio to running instead of walking/x-trainer after Christmas so I thought that would facilitate weight loss rather than muscle gain? Bugger.

Sorry to hijack your thread trishie, but the same thing happened to me recently. 11 stone on my scale at home, and more like 10 ¼ on the gym one!

That is a massive difference and it?s doing my head in!

The thing is, I suspect there?s something wrong with my home scale (wishful thinking maybe!) At Christmas I was down to 10 ½ stone and I went away for the holidays and a friend of mine borrowed the scales (without asking I might add? grrr) and lugged them over the other side of London to weigh her back for a long haul flight. Since she returned them I?ve been stuck on 11 stone, even though I?ve been eating sensibly and working out 5 times a week. Is it possible they might have been damaged and the gym ones are correct??

How do you burn 2300 doing nothing hanno? Is your job quite active? I only ask because I have a desk job but walk up to an hour a day (just around town, but quite briskly) and even with an hour?s worth of cardio at the gym I struggle to get past 2300.

yeah I think I am probably above sedentary but keeping my profile as sedentary motivates me to walk more - like go for a walk at lunchtime or walk part of the way home or whatever... I eat up to the very limit of what I can (i.e. up to a 500 cal deficit ... sometimes beyond when I'm being greedy) so I want to make sure my expenditure is as accurate as possible!
Weight Loss Is counting calories REALLY worth it? Jan 05 2007

Jocelyn I relate to you ? I?m 25, my uni days are behind me but I would have found it impossible to count calories as a student! Luckily my metabolism was quite fast in those days and I walked around a lot, so watching my diet wasn?t so much of a concern. I?m probably 10 ? 15 pounds more than I would like to be ideally, but I don?t have a huge weight problem so I try not to get too obsessed.

Working at a desk job 5 days a week and still eating like I was 18 is what did me in! CC has helped me get an idea of what I?m putting in my mouth as I was pretty clueless before ? I aim for a 500 calorie deficit but I don?t stress if it?s only 300 ? I still figure it?s better than 500 in the red which is what I was often doing daily before.

It?s tough to keep within target on days when you go out drinking (living in the UK this is something that happens often and I don?t know about you but I was a big boozer at uni) so I don?t beat myself up about it, but I don?t go out for a casual pint after work ? I save drinking for special partying occasions or have a civilised glass of wine with my boyfriend.

Good luck.

How about a couple of piece pf wholemeal toast with a spread? I have 2 pieces of toast with marmite usually (which I wouldn?t expect you to like, unless you?re a kiwi too!!) ? but maybe with jam or honey or hummus or something?

Then I follow it up with fruit at about 10.30 cos I get hungry again quickly ? usually a couple of mandarins or a punnet of fresh raspberries.

thanks for all of your comments.

I think it's right - WW teaches people hot to eat right & how to portion control. To be honest I have always etane fresh food etc - just too much of it. And I never thought about how much c-rap I was putting in my body through the milky coffees and chocolate brownies & cheese sandwiches I was snacking on.

Just having an awareness of calorie content helps me - I always knew what was good & bad - I just never realised HOW bad some of the bad stuff was!

Also you need to relax a bit, and not be so hard on yourself.

Yesterday I was on track to have a good 1400 cal day, got home made my tuna & steamed sweet potato salad. Then totally self sabotaged because I was watchng TV alone and gobbled down 4 pieces of bread.

I was annoyed at myself as I didn?t need all that food, but at least it wasn?t icecream, or even white stodgy bread (it was grainy vogel?s bread ? yum) and though I blew out to about 1900, it?s actually still probably 3-400 cals less than I was eating routinely before I started keeping an eye on my intake.

So all is not lost. I guess the key is to rein your self in when you start blowing out i.e. I had one piece of bread, then 2 ? if I?d stopped them I still would have been around target ? but I just though, screw it go for gold. So silly.

Alex if you do have PCOS you will need to go on the Pill to sort out your hormones ( I think - this is what happened to my friend).

If it's suitable for you I would recommend you try Yasmin, which has helped me lose weight I gained on Depo Provera.

Hi Alex, if your periods have been normal for ages and you are not underweight I would see a doctor. These irregular periods happened to my best mate and it turned out she had PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovaries Syndrome) ? worth getting checked out, the sooner you can treat it the better (don?t freak out its not a major but worth getting sorted out).

If you only got your period in the last 2 years (for the first time) it could be that they are still settling into a routine. Alternatively, if you?ve been on a very low cal diet and have a low body weight maybe that?s why they?ve stopped.

When I started calorie counting, I cut out my morning latte ? 194 cals ? and replaced it with a black instant coffee (1 cal, or 21 cals with one lump of sugar). It kills me, because I love proper coffee and I used to be the girl who turned up my nose at instant, but hey, all in the name of next summer?s bikini. Now if I go to a café I get a large espresso.  No muffins or pastries either.

Replaced morning brownie with morning punnet of fresh raspberries (267 cals v 65).

I?ve also tried to cut out cheese ? I never buy it at the supermarket, except sometimes feta or halloumi for salads. This also means not eating ploughman?s sandwiches (cheese & pickle ? big in England ? and yummy)and pizza (which I love!). If I?ve had a particularly active day and gone to the gym I might indulge in a ploughman?s for lunch.

Trying to also eat less carbs in the evening ? dinner was usually stuffed pasta, or cous cous with meat? Now my bf and I prepare the veges and meat and he put them on carbs for dinner and I chuck them in a salad.

thanks nomoreexcuses.

let me reassure you, the inadvertant fasting is a very rare event for me! I think maybe I just wasn't hungry after yesterday, plus sleeping for half the day probably helps take the cal count down too (less time awake = less time to eat)

Hi all - can I join? I hit 148.8 this a.m and my goal is 132. I was 149.9 a week ago so I now don?t feel like I?m cheating by putting my hand up to join in! I finished uni almost 2 years ago and since then I?ve been steadily packing on the pounds since I started a desk job. I?ve just moved to London and this city is notorious for stacking on the weight (warm beer anyone?) so I have decided it?s really time to do something about it.

Until now, I?ve been happy to go by whether my clothes fit, but although I can get myself into size 10 (US6) tops and size12 (Us8) bottoms, the idea of getting into a bikini is horrifying. My BMI is 25, so it?s really time to count those calories. I?m targeting 1600 per day.

Thanks sea5004... the thing with me is I've always exercised quite a bit - pump classes, cardio classes, and cardio machines - so I'm reasonably fit. HOWEVER I've used it as a justification to eat whatever crap I want to put in my mouth so consequently there ain't much muscle tone showing!

Now, I'm trying to concentrate more on the calories primarily, and on the gym as an adjunct to the calorie counting. Once I'm nearer to where I want to be weight wise, I'll start thinking about being more strategic in my workout.

- A stone is 6.5 lb I think?

Hi Veronica I?m also new ? I?m 5?5 and up to 11 stone ? heavier than I?ve ever been before ? I envisage myself at around 9 and a half stone?? (shows what not owning scales will do).

I?m not an expert like many of the people on this forum, but a few of thing things I?ve done to reduce my calorie intake:

-       &n bsp; Swapped my morning latte for a black instant coffee (1 calorie compared to 200)

-       &n bsp; Swapped my morning brownie for a punnet of fresh raspberries (64 cals v 267)

-       &n bsp; A lot more veges on the menu; i.e. salad for dinner, which I NEVER ate before - usually a supermarket salad mix pack + tomato + capsicum + red onion + tuna and/or 1 kumara (sweet potato) steamed in the microwave.

I?m aiming for around 1600 cals a week and I try to get to the gym at least three times a week to do an hour of cardio (bike/treadmill on an incline). I?m reasonably fit but previously I was eating whatever I liked, justifying to myself on the basis of my gym going. It didn?t work unfortunately. I also try to get out from behind my desk at lunchtime and go for a 2km walk (nice to get a bit of sunshine in gloomy London as well!)

Don?t know if this helps at all but good luck!
Weight Loss What is your menu ~on an average day? Dec 06 2006
20:53 (UTC)
Today I had:

Breakfast: Fruit Muesli/Cereal with semi skimmed milk (214 cals)

Snack: 1 punnet of raspberries (64 cal) black coffee

Lunch: Bit of a blowout at the sushi restaurant!

- Miso soup with tofu (about 80 if I remeber correctly)

- 6 x seared tuna california roll (about 300 cals)

- 1 salmon hand roll (didn't really need the hand roll but oh well) 117 cals

Afternoon: 1 punnet raspberries (again - I'm addicted) and 1 Cadbury Dairy Milk 99 calorie bar - a thin slab of dairy milk - yum.

Dinner:

2 x soy & linseed toast with olivani spread (280 for 2 plus 54 for the spread)

Tomato & basil soup - about 105 cals

and Weight waitcher choc/vanilla mousse for dessert - 106 cals

All up today I came in at about 1460 odd calories. Not bad considering I feel like I've been eating non stop!

Sometimes I'll swap the breakfast cereal for 2 slices of whole grain toast with vegemite, lunch is sometimes jacket potato with tuna & a mized salad, and dinner is often a mixed green salad (watercress/rocket/spinach leaf, baby tomatoes, red onion, roast peppers, beetroot) with tuna, sweet potato (just nuked in the micowave) or lean lamb.

hello this is my first post!

I am a snack queen - just been counting calories for a week now but snacks really help me to stay focussed because I dont get the hunger pangs...

Today I snacked on:

fresh raspberries (morning) - i think a punnet is about 64 ish cals

more fresh raspberries and Cadbury Dairy Milk 99 Calorie chocolate (afternoon)

a Weight Watchers chocolate vanilla mousse for dessert (106 cals)

So much better than the chocolate brownie, 217 cal Dairy Milk, and peanut M & Ms I used to knock back.

PS As you can see I have a really sweet tooth!
