Why is this so true!? I don't even live near a beach. T_T;

I live in RI about 45 minutes from the beach.  For a rhode islander that's a day trip were you need to pack a lunch and change of clothes..  An hour drive you'll need to bring an overnight bag

I thought we all drank del's lemonade?

And Rhode Island isn't really an island.  Our state's name is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.  the name refers to Aquideneck Island or "Rhode Island" (Newport, portsmouth, middletown) and the plantations refers to the rest of the state.

Fitness Is it bad to work out 1st thing in the AM? Oct 22 2008

I run at about 5:30 in the moring two days a week at the track for the local high school.  The parking lot lights are enough to see where I am stepping and I enjoy being out when the sun comes up.  I have found that I have more energy for the run if I eat lightly before I go out.  I generally eat a banana with a small cup of apple juice.  If you eat before excersise you may have to try different foods / drinks as everyone's stomach handles it differently.

Fitness Question to all runners! Oct 21 2008

This is my first year back at running in quite a few years.

Back when I was a competive runner in high school and college (in the northeastern US) we ran outside 5-6 days a week.  You have to wear a lot of clothes and gloves and hats etc.  My only issue was my face would get really cold and I had to keep my ears covered.

I will be running outside as long as it isn't snowy or too cold.   I generally run outside now on Sunday, wednesday and Friday mornings (early, about 5:15 am) and treadmill running on M,Tu,Th.  I'll be on the treadmill on wednesdays and fridays on rough days but will still trudge through the weather on sundays (gym is close to work but 25 minutes from house.  Not worth the drive.)  Maybe I'm smarter now that I'm older, or just less brave.

You do have to stay well hydrated in the winter.  You actually still lose quite a bit of water in the cold when exercising and can dehydrate.

Health & Support Working out when sick? Sep 25 2008

I have exercised with a cold.  It's true that you will not be able to do as much as when you are not sick, but it does help you feel better for a while afterward.  Just don't overdo it and make sure you stay properly hydrated.

I included the information from the following website.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/exercise/AN0 1097

Yes, you can continue with mild or moderate activity if you have a cold with no fever. Exercise may even help you feel better — by temporarily relieving nasal congestion.

So how do you determine if you're too sick to exercise? Here's a good rule of thumb: If your symptoms are "above the neck" — such as runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, or sore throat — you can proceed with your workout.

However, if your symptoms are "below the neck" — such as chest congestion or tightness, hacking cough, or upset stomach — you should postpone your workout. Also, you shouldn't exercise if you have a fever, fatigue or widespread muscle aches. Rarely, exercising with a fever has been associated with inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis).

As always, use common sense. If you're not feeling well but still want to exercise, reduce the intensity of your workout and listen to your body. If your symptoms worsen with exercise, stop and rest. Missing a few days of exercise isn't the end of the world.

Pizza is a gig binge thing for me.  Last thursday my wife ordered pizza for her and her sister for lunch.  When I got home from work there was one medium peperoni pizza and half an order of cheesy bread left over.  I kept telling myself to stop but I ate the entire pizza and the order of breadsticks.

I'm also bad if there are chips in the pantry, I can eat almost an entire bag in one sitting.

Guess it's sad for you that people found another topic to discuss.

Anyways it's not just the "Mcmansions" that people cannot afford, a lot of people also can't afford modest homes they bought.  I personally bought a home within my and my wifes means with a fixed rate back in 2001 during the price escallation and am pissed that irresponsible people who purchased houses they could not afford could get a handout while I won't because I did things correctly.  However I am middle class so I'm screwed on everything.  However I am not into screwing the economy just to say that I was a good boy and you were bad.  In the big picture if we let companies like Fannie May and Freddie Mac and AIG fail it could have negative repercusions on our country.  I agree that we need to stop spending more than we take in as a country.  We need to stop spending so much money on special programs etc.  This will never happen because the politicians use these special moneies they bring back to their constituents as a reason to get reelected.

The illegal persons might work more hours without receiving overtime pay or would be less likely to complain or demand anything from their employer since their illegal status makes them vulnerable to exploitation.

This is true.  If you were here illegally what would you do if you complain and get fired.  Go to the authorities and complain that you were treated unfairly and risk being deported.

Fast food nation brings some of these things to light in the meat packing industry.  These companies hire illegals and then don't provide insurance until they've been working for a year because they know most workers quit and move on before that time.  But these people make more here then back in their native country so they keep working.  Meat packing used to be a high wage position in areas like Chicago and now those jobs are pretty much gone.  these companies hire illegals so they have cheap labor, don't pay for insurance, and they don't have to pay taxes on their wages.  the companies are as much if not more to blame than the illegal immigrants.

The community activists claimed the language barrier made the legal immigrants not clearly understand that only illegal immigrants would affected.  Plus they were concerned about racial profiling, which I do agree can be a problem.  Even the local churches came out against the govenor on this topic.

second, all it would take to correct the immigration problem is for the attorneys general of each state to crack down on employers of illegal immigrants

The republican Govenor in Rhode Island came out with an executive order stating that all state employees and any company that does work with the state has to do a background check on their employees to make sure they are legal.   There were many protests by the latino community and social services groups calling the govenor racist, claiming even the legal ones think they'll be deported etc..  He's gotten a lot of bad press from the local media and the ACLU filed a lawsuit against him.

Oh and the democrat mayor of Providence, our capitol, and his cheif of police thumbed their noses at the govenor.  The mayor wants to declare that prov will be a sanctuary city, ie they don't care if you are legal or illegal.

So not all polititions / AG either politically care or have the stomach to deal with such issues.

Give yourself plenty of time before the race to train and buildup the mileage slowly.  Injuries happen if you increase how much you run quickly.

Also if you are prone to injuries you should get your feet fitted with some good running shoes.  Everyone lands different on their feet and different shoes help if say you over pronate etc.  once you but the shoes only wear them for running, use other shoes for walking around for your daily activities.  Running shoes are only good for 3 to 5 hundred miles then (even though there is plenty of tread left, the cushion will be gone) buy a new pair.

Try running on soft surfaces such as grass or you local high school track.  Concrete is the worst surface and asphalt is not much better.

There are some training programs available on the web.  Below is one from Coolrunning .com  Find a buddy to run with to help you stay with it.

I did not vote for Bush in either election, however it doesn't matter who i vote for since RI always goes democrat in the national election, except for Mondale.  I am voting for McCain this time though.  I really care about local politics where I actually have a voice with my vote.

That's not the point. If McCain is elected, she's going to be part in deciding any new judges placed on the Supreme Court. You think she's not going to campaign to get judges who support her anti-abortion b.s.?

I'm sure in the off chance that all the stars aligned correctly, Palin could recommend a judge, however, I don't believe that pro-life politicians look at only that one issue when they nominate a person to be a supreme court judge.  I would think their past record on topics that will actually come up before the courts (which I believe that roe v wade likely never will) would way things more strongly.  In addition the nominee has to pass through a senate committee that picks apart everything about their past and then the senate votes for or against the judge.  With a democratic congress it is not a bad thing to have a republican president.  The "checks and balances" goes away when one party controls everything.

I personally do not believe that books should be banned.  Parents should be able to keep track of what their kids read.   i'm sure that there are books out there I will not want my children to read, whether it's too mature for them at their age or for whatever reason.  I don't know as my kids are too young now.  The most "controversial" book that my three year old son reads now is "Yertle the Turtle" by Doctor Suess.

About the topic of abortion, the vice president has no say in Roe Vs. Wade.  If this law would ever be changed, a case would have to start at the level of the local courts and over many years time make it up to the supreme court for the judges to decide.

No elected official can change this law.  Only if somehow Palin became president, had a judge retire, and then pass an ultra conservative judge through what is now a democratic (read - liberal) congress, then maybe she'd have an impact.  Oh, and only if it was one of the liberal judges that retired.  Therefore I really do not see how this should effect how anyone votes in the election.

I personally find many other topics more worth while  when deciding who to vote for.

Flogging Sully

I'm sure we all know that when a new boss or manager for companies or politicians come in, they want the people who work with them to be on the same page as them.  it is not uncommon for the new boss to bring in their own people.  This was Paulin's way of understanding if this worker would be loyal to her.  Obviously they didn't mesh well together because the librarian would not follow orders.  I'm sure many workers have been let go because they have disagreed with their superiors.

In no place does it dictate that Paulin actually wanted to ban or remove books.

Do you think if Obama wins the presidential election he will keep all the workers that Bush has hired around the White House?  I think many will have differing view points from Obama and will be let go which a good manager should do.

Palin did not try to fire the librarian for not banning books.  from the website
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/slimi ng_palin.htm

One accusation claims then-Mayor Palin threatened to fire Wasilla’s librarian for refusing to ban books from the town library. Some versions of the rumor come complete with a list of the books that Palin allegedly attempted to ban. Actually, Palin never asked that books be banned; no books were actually banned; and many of the books on the list that Palin supposedly wanted to censor weren't even in print at the time, proving that the list is a fabrication. The librarian was fired, but was told only that Palin felt she didn’t support her. She was re-hired the next day. The librarian never claimed that Palin threatened outright to fire her for refusing to ban books.

It’s true that Palin did raise the issue with Mary Ellen Emmons, Wasilla’s librarian, on at least two occasions, three in some versions. Emmons flatly stated her opposition each time. But, as the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman (Wasilla’s local paper) reported at the time, Palin asked general questions about what Emmons would say if Palin requested that a book be banned. According to Emmons, Palin "was asking me how I would deal with her saying a book can't be in the library." Emmons reported that Palin pressed the issue, asking whether Emmons' position would change if residents were picketing the library. Wasilla resident Anne Kilkenny, who was at the meeting, corroborates Emmons' story, telling the Chicago Tribune that "Sarah said to Mary Ellen, 'What would your response be if I asked you to remove some books from the collection?' "

Palin initially requested Emmons’ resignation, along with those of Wasilla’s other department heads, in October 1996. Palin described the requests as a loyalty test and allowed all of them (except one, whose department she was eliminating) to retain their positions. But in January 1997, Palin fired Emmons, along with the police chief. According to the Chicago Tribune, Palin did not list censorship as a reason for Emmons’ firing, but said she didn’t feel she had Emmons’ support. The decision caused “a stir” in the small town, according to a newspaper account at the time. According to a widely circulated e-mail from Kilkenny, “city residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter.”

As we’ve noted, Palin did not attempt to ban any library books. We don’t know if Emmons’ resistance to Palin’s questions about possible censorship had anything to do with Emmons’ firing. And we have no idea if the protests had any impact on Palin at all. There simply isn’t any evidence that we can find either way. Palin did re-hire Emmons the following day, saying that she now felt she had the librarian’s backing. Emmons continued to serve as librarian until August 1999, when the Chicago Tribune reports that she resigned.

So what about that list of books targeted for banning, which according to one widely e-mailed version was taken “from the official minutes of the Wasilla Library Board”? If it was, the library board should take up fortune telling. The list includes the first four Harry Potter books, none of which had been published at the time of the Palin-Emmons conversations. The first wasn't published until 1998. In fact, the list is a simple cut-and-paste job, snatched (complete with typos and the occasional incorrect title) from the Florida Institute of Technology library Web page, which presents the list as “Books banned at one time or another in the United States.”

After my wife and I had our first lovely child i read that you should wait at least 18 months for your body to recover until you get pregnant  again.  I found this article online.

http://www.webmd.com/news/20060418/pregnancy- spacing-affects-outcome

My children are 2 years and 8 months apart.  My son turns 3 in november and I am can't wait until he is potty trained so we'll only be changing diapers for one.  He also was still in his crib so we had to buy another one.  Both convert into a bed so it isn't a total loss.
We had to buy all new clothes since the new addition was a girl, but if you have your second the same time as the first then you can reuse the clothes.

When I was going to college, two of friends met people on line with mixed results.

We were in school in rhode island and one friend met a guy from Indiana in a chat room.  After about 6 months he came to visit her and they really hit it off.  He moved out here and they have since been married for about 5 -6 years.

Another friend in college met a guy in Oregon in a chat room.  they talked on line for maybe 6 months to a year.  She dropped out of school and moved out to Oregon to be with this guy.  He was very aloof when she got out there and she later found out that he had a girlfriend (who was also in the dark).  Obviously things did not work out with them.

Jillmenow-

It wasn't hard to adjust living together after we were married, although unfortunately we were not alone for too long.

We married on a Saturday, came home from our honeymoon on Thursday, and my wife's 19 year old sister moved in with us on Saturday.  She had a big fight with her mother and decided she could no longer live there anymore.  Their father lives up in northern Maine in the middle of nowhere which was not ideal for her, so she really had no where else to go.  The hard part with this was we had rented out 1/4 of a house, so our place was small, good for 2 people and our cat but not 3 people.  She ended up living with us for the majority of 5 years (she was gone when she went to Italy for a semester abroad and for a few months we she tried basic training in the army).

All has worked out, we've been married for 8 years and have a 3 year old son and a 2 month old daughter.

I'm one of those old fashioned people who think you shouldn't move in together until you get married.  My wife and I were dating / engaged for 4 + years until we married and got our first place together.  I was living with my brother and she was living with her mom up until then.

I weighed 177.8 pounds this morning, down 2 from last week. I did well with the calories this week but didn’t eat very healthy, pizza twice, fried dough, baja chicken sandwich at Quiznos last night, so I need to get better this week.

Welcome Meg. Congratulations on being engaged. Now you get to have all the fun of planning the wedding. The people on this site are very supportive and will help you stay motivated.

I have also found myself using the scale at home a few times a week even through I know it is not accurate. I just want to get an idea of where I am during the week. Seven days is a long time between weigh ins.

I typically drink only water but I’ve been craving juice lately. It’s tough to see it there in the refrigerator next to the jug of water and pass it up. Do you get looks from the waitress when you get only water when you go to a restaurant? For us it’s an easy way to limit calories and saves money, but they must be thinking we’re cheap and their tip is going to decrease.

I’m bracing myself for all the candy that I’ll be getting next week around valentine’s day and at Easter. Even through I’m 32 my parents still give a huge Easter basket filled with candy and it’s tough to stay away from. Even though you are on a diet are you still getting candy for Valentine’s day?
