hey lovestonedtim -

I'm the same way.  I now weigh 135 lbs on a 5'5" frame which is pretty average but if you only looked at my face, you would expect someone bigger.  My face is the last place to lose and first to gain fat.  argh!

That said, glad to know I'm not the only one. Tongue out

Weight Loss South Beach Diet? Oct 04 2007

I want to start South Beach again!

I have done it once before and though I lost only 4 lbs on Phase 1.  I totally fudged Phase 2 and 3 but I realize I pretty much live my life in Phase 3 since I try and eat healthy anyway.  I have just under 6 months before my wedding and would like to lose 15 lbs.  I am 5' 5" and weigh about 135 lbs now.

Got a jump start on my vacation in the Cuba.  I didn't much care for their rice (total rice snob, that's me!) and I try to stay away from potatoes in general (except for occassional binges!) so I was eating mostly proteins and fruits.  I was also eating small scoops of ice-cream at two meals every day and doing very little exercise(as in just laying on the beach) but still managed to lose 4 lbs from just the food!

The best thing post Phase 1 was that carbs filled me so easily so it was automatic portion control.  I suck at Portion control...

Here's an idea for you, non-coffee drinker.

Raspberry Creamsicle

Pour some raspberry (or any other flavoured) syrup into a glass according to taste (I fill it about 1/8th of the way) , throw in some ice, fill up about 3/4 of the way with soda water.  Then throw in either skim or 1% milk.  Stir and enjoy.  Yum!

The original is supposed to use half and half and top with whip but this is smarter, non?

I just started reading Body for Life for Women and will be starting the program hopefully next week.  This is the first program where it deals with not just exercise or diet but also the pysche of a woman as a 3 part plan.  Gotta do this!

Karak, that's awesome.  Gives me motivation to get charged up and start!

Late for my weigh in... sorry!

Weigh in for this week - 134 lbs.  Down 2!!

12 lbs more to go for my ideal but I'd be happy with about 7 lbs loss by mid June  :)  An interesting twist will be my vegetarian month starting tomorrow and going to June 16th.  I am observing a religious month for Buddhists and will be going the complete opposite direction from South Beach.  That is no eggs, no meat, no fish.... It will be interesting to see what results.  Will keep you in the loop.

Am having difficulty with introducing carbs back sensibly - went to lunch friday and had pasta in rose sauce (only 1/2 the lunch portion though) with a lemonade (I was actually buzzing post that sugar fest).  Saturday was better, Sunday had potatoes and white bread at one point.

Phase 1 was easy enough because it was so strict in a sense and had an end date in sight.  Phase 2 is a test of will and right now, I feel like I am losing.  Must do better this week... starting today.

Robochels - congratulations!

this week weigh in - 136 lbs.

I've netted 0 lbs in lost weight this week.  Depressing as heck but I'm mollified by the fact that at least my clothes fit better.

Started adding carbs 1 meal per day but find that I get full really quickly, so that's great!  Any wisdom to share on whether the meal should be breakfast or dinner?  I've heard conflicting stuff...

Do share!

Yahoo!!

Thought I'd share.

Day 3 of week two and I am now here for my Tuesday weigh-in.

As of this morning, I weigh 136 (down 4 lbs!!) Hurrah!

I almost caved in yesterday... I had a super stressful day and was feeling so drained that I almost said "F it, I;m going to have that slice of Death by Chocolate"... but today in retrospect, I am so glad I didn't!!!

I am down 4 lbs but I must confess that I haven't been entirely good.  That is, I have been eating all the things that are SB approved (I cheated once by eating dark meat rather than white) but the cheating part comes into my portion sizes.  I still feel hungry sometimes... if not right after a meal then, one or so later so then I will snack either that or have more at my meal.  Mind you, SB approved snacks but snacks none the less.   I haven't been logging my food and I know that is one way to control it but frankly, I haven't had the time.  Work's been insane and this was actually not the greatest time to start the diet but boy, does dressing in the morning ever feel good!!

I had a burger on the weekend... discovered that a burger isn't quite the same with no bun and no ketchup :(  shall stay away till I'm allowed at least half a bun and 1/4 tsp ketchup!

Congratulations to all who have been living healthy, on the SB or not.  Whatever works for you works for you.  This apparently works for me!!

cheers.

Great job guys!  So good to hear from you. Yeah, I've heard that you get really thirsty a lot so we better keep guzzling h2O.

Day 5 on SB and feeling great!  My clothes feel better, my stomach is flatter, life is pretty good.

I haven't really exercised and don't intend on heavy activity during Phase 1.  Also my job has been hectic so long hours at work aren't exactly condusive to making to the gym.  I will probably start working out regularly once I am either towards the end of Phase 1 or in phase 2.

On the food front, don't try the quiche in the SB book.  Yuck!  Turns rubbery and includes way too much spinach... and I generally love spinach!  A great discovery was frozen salmon fillets from Gordon's.  Cheap, fast and delish.

My fave meal right now is salmon pan-fried and the steamed with salt and pepper and some lemon juice drizzled with cilantro mayo from the SB book (YUM!), accompanied by asparagus steamed with the same + butter spray, and (I'm no nibbler!) a small mesculin mix salad with black olives and some light feta + lemon juice and olive oil dressing.  I had premade the cilantro mayo but I swear I fixed the rest in about 15 minutes tops.

Lemme know of any discoveries, fave fast recepies, etc.

TGIF!!  Have a great weekend.

So good to see so many posts....

Feeling great on Day 2! Started a day by fitting into a skirt that was a little snug on my hips when I first bought it so that felt good.  Looking forward to more of the same :)

Weigh in weight = 140 lbs

Think I'll save my tea for later in the day, as usual.  Had a veggie omlette for breakfast with a mozarella stick and a small glass of V8.  I'm actually a little hungry even now so I had a few almonds.  Might snack again around 10:30 if this continues.... After all, the good doctor Agaston does say that we should eat till we feel full!  Hurrah!  Plan to drink water first to make sure it's hunger and not thirst that I am feeling.

Have a nice chicken salad and some black bean salsa that I whipped up last night.  Might have a Coke Zero with that (LOVE it! So much better than Diet Coke) My work fridge is full of SB approved snacks so I should be great!  One thing that I was wondering was is there any sugar in Tazo Passion tea... it's a hibiscus tea so logically, there shouldn't be any, right?  Any ideas?

Check in, keep me posted!  cheers :)

rinzy2000, rmhart and jessthemess (your name cracked me up!) Hurrah!  Day One - we are on our way!

So yesterday, I went grocery shopping and the first thing I noticed was boy, is this diet expensive!  $60 and not even a week's worth of groceries...!

I had 2 veggie quiche  things (in the SB book) for breakfast with a cup of V8 juice, a partskim mozarella stick for a snack and a modest greek salad with low fat feta and chicken for lunch with a Coke Zero.  I'm also drinking a cup of 1% milk.  I like my liquids :)  For dinner, I thought I'd have a turkey burger minus the bun with some salsa and a salad.  So far so good.  I'm saving my caffeine intake (1 tea) for 4 pm :)  No headaches, no cravings.

Rinzy2000 and I had talked about doing Tuesday weigh-ins (Mondays are depressing enough to begin with) so let's check in tomorrow.  Let me know how your first day is going!  Cheers.

Thank you so much for all the support and letting me know whether this worked for you or not.  Generally, we tend to hear only the success stories so this provides a more well rounded picture and is helpful.

While I haven't done the full diet before, I did the first two weeks with a co-worker basically for moral support but also to see whether this works for me.  First time around (in Phase 1) didn't lose any weight but my appetite did decrease dramatically so it boded well for the future of the diet!  I was fine past day 2.  I already eat quite healthy (hardly any white or refined carbs, loads of fresh veggies and lean meats) so hopefully, I will be able to do this!

Thanks to ericc!  I will definitely come to you if I have any questions.  My boss is a huge fan as well as an aunt of mine so I'm hoping I'll be living life on the Beach pretty soon as well!

cheers!

Has anyone here tried the South Beach Diet yet?  I want to start next week and wondered if someone else wanted to do it together.  A girl at work has been doing this for 3.5 months and lost 25 lbs.  I am totally inspired!!

I intend to get a red bikini to hang in my room for extra insipiration.

Start weight (Dec 06) = 142 lbs

mid point (late March) = 146 lbs (sick in Feb, then fell down the stairs & sprained my wrist, couldn't go to gym, so thought what the hell ..... till I got on the scales and the number gave me a wake up call !!)

4/17 = 140.8 lbs

net Net loss = 1.2 lbs

Two things to improve this week

  1. Stop eating when I'm full.  (duh!) I've noticed that I sometimes eat because I like the taste of the food rather than because I'm hungry... argh!
  2. Get to the gym again
I'm preparing to start the South Beach Diet next week.

A bad patch happens to everyone.  Move past it and psych yourself to do better.  Don't beat yourself up about it.

The key I think is not to deny yourself anything but to focus instead on portion control.  Like those natchos.  I know that Doritos makes a bag that's portioned at 100 calories so you can't eat more without making a decision to open another pack.

You can do this!

The other thing that will give you the 10 lb gain is a new job in a great area.  I started at my current job about 1 yr. ago and have gained at least 10 lbs since.  There are fantastic restaurants close by and new friends to hit the patios in the summer with.  Then of course in the winter, it's baking season and we have some very gifted bakers in our office as well.  10 lbs later, I didn't know what hit me!

Have a nasty cold that is dragging out.  I don't know what gives but 2007 is turning out to be a rather bad year health wise.  This is my second cold since mid Feb and in between I managed to fall down the stairs and injure myself + fall on the ice and make it worse!  yikes!

Oh Scoutie, Congratulations on that 1.5 inch loss from the waistline!  For me that's my key target area and it's so essential to that womanly hourglass figure that I love.  Since I'm okay on the hips and can't supersize the girls (sans surgery), gotta go for the waist!

Never been on the Eliptical trainers for a sunset viewing but I know that I like running on that track because of all the windows there so I can see out while running in a controlled environment.

unsedentary - I'm totally up for a CC meet-up.  What fun!  It would just have to be close to the subway line :)  Anyone else interested?

subwaybusker - welcome!

BTW people, I heard this first hand from a trainer at the Y and just read it in this new exercise book I've purchased called UltimateFit but apparently pure weight loss (not toning, muscle gain or getting fit) is 75% diet and 25% exercise.  Did anyone know this or am I the only one who felt she got clocked in the noggin?  I always thought it would be closer to 50-50.  Not so apparently.

Haven't worked out since Tuesday but should be getting back on track starting this evening if the weather holds up.

How do you like the NY Ballet?  Lemme know.  Interested in that, Fluidity and the Barre method.

Tried Winsor Pilates and found it boring.  Mari has a terrible onscreen presence.  However, the two - three times that I did do the workout (I have the one with the circle) I did feel it the next day.

Now if only she were more interesting and it were set on a beach or something....

best of luck!

I agree.  Vanity sizing sucks.  You have no way of knowing what size you really are.  There should be some Garment Association that just puts a stake in the ground and defines industry standard sizes.   One would think that if we had clothes by waist size that would standardize it but I am here to tell you, all size 27 jeans are not equal.  That too differs by company and by style of jeans!

I go into one store, I'm a 2:  then in another store, I'm struggling to zip up a 5-6.  No wonder women's emotions are all over the place when shopping!

Also, what's up with bras being different sizes for different companies???

Hey Scoutie -

I work out at the West End Y on weekends (those weekends that I do make it to the gym).  I have to agree - the attitude at the Y is very healthy and you see people of every age, every shape and every size which makes you realize that the reality of it is people come in different shapes and sizes - period.

I can't say I love the classes there though.  I have been to a spin class and hated the room (too claustrophobic) and the other class was a yoga class.

*Rant moment* So, I had to leave early after the yoga class and we were doing the "dead" pose - you know the one, where you lay on the ground and basically sleep - (I find that pose a bit of a waste of time to be honest) so I tried to make as little noise as possible and leave.  Then, the gym instructor says really loudly "Excuse me - next time please leave before we start this segment because you are disturbing others".  OMG!  So embarassing!  She completely overlooked the fact that 1) her pulling me up was way more disturbing to the others than my leaving (sure as hell was much louder) and 2) earlier in the class someone else's cell phone rang twice and the second time, she actually picked up the call and answered it and the instructor blisfully overlooked it.  Talk about selective repremanding!  *rant over*

Anyhoo, must say I really do enjoy the running track at the West end Y though.  Something about the windows around it I think.

Well, fight the good fight and keep writing!

Hey guys,

Great to hear from everyone.  I had a bit of a fall about 4 weeks ago and managed to injure myself.  So, that has meant no working out for about a month.  Then I went to the doctors for my physical and, horror of horrors, found I am now up 4 pounds from where I started!!  Will need to get back to working out really soon... but the cold is really making it hard to work out in the mornings when my warm bed is singing it's siren song  :)

Pretty eyes - thanks for the words of motivation.  I will try to remember them when I feel down about my weight situation.

Scoutie - I'm getting married too (though your date seems a lot closer than mine) so there is definitely that pressure to look good because those photos are going to be around for a lifetime!  Would you say you recommend the boxfit class at the Y? and which Y do you go to for the class?  Also re: clocking how far that run is, have you seen the Nike+ shoes and ipod Sports Kit?  If you're a runner, it's really worth the investment.  I'm just getting into running but like the gizmos.  Thought you might be interested.

sdel83 - You've clearly got your head on straight re: body image and I really respect that.

abinakm - You look great in those photos so I don't know what you're going on about! :)  Gotta admire the motivation to run from Mississauga to Harbourfront.  Let me know how the progress goes on that.

I try to work out in the mornings 7:15 - 8:15 at the Y in downtown Toronto so if anyone wants a workout buddy, let me know.  I'm game!

Cheers :)

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

Weight Loss Jeans and the over hang belly??? Dec 04 2006
15:52 (UTC)

The first thing I would say is go up a size but the cut of the jeans is as important as the size.  If you go to the Gap, they have different jeans cut for different body types.  Pick a type that works for you.  e.g. The straight cut works for me as I have no waist , i.e., the difference between my waist and hips is not significant.  They also have curvy for those with a smaller waist but heavier hips and thighs.  You sound like you should try the straight cut.

Also, how new are your jeans?  They will stretch (provided they are not the stretch variety.  I hate stretch jeans... unflattering and terrible at maintaining shape) so go with a pair that fits a little snugger than you usually wear them.

At the end of the day, lumps and bumps are never attractive.  Go with a size that fits and you will look slimmer and more elegant.  As for the number inside, noone sees it but you! :)

Hope this helps.
