| Weight Loss | For those who bike and are/were over 200 pounds? | Jul 02 2008 04:10 (UTC) |

| I think the type of bike you should get mostly depends on you.
Meaning you should get whichever bike you think you will use the most. In general a bike will get you moving which is always good, but certain bikes are easier to get a good workout on than others. If you are looking to just simply get moving but still be entertained by the local scenery. I had a cruiser bike once and always enjoyed riding through the neighborhood and looking at all the architecture. Get a mountain bike if you are looking for an immediate challenge, and also wish to hit some trails. I have owned pretty much every type of bike. I personally prefer and currently ride a fixed gear track bike with a single hand break on it. It is a great bike to ride in the city but also suburban flat lands. One of the main reasons why I love it is because it is SUPER light. I can swing it over my shoulder with no problem. I always struggled to do this with the mountain and cruiser bikes (I live in the city and keep my bikes inside my apartment to prevent them from being stolen). It is so light because there are no gears or breaks on it. I put a hand break on there just to be cautious, because I am not that daring. It definitely gets your legs moving! If I were you I would log onto craigslist.com and buy a cheap but running cruiser bike. You could get a good one for around $100. It is a great starter bike, it is like a sofa on wheels... almost! : ) Then once you feel more comfortable on that you can look for a challenge on a mountain or track bike. |

| Weight Loss | How do you spread out your calories? | Jun 18 2008 02:28 (UTC) |
7 |
| To be honest I think the answer to this question varies from person to person.
It really depends on what you prefer, but also when you tend to be hungry. Often times I will be up at 5am and will not go to be till 10pm that night. So I will have a quick 100 calorie breakfast (usually a vitatop muffin) so that I jump start my metabolism and then a large snack around 9am. This could be oatmeal or some cereal and fruit. I usually have another mini snack around 11am, then lunch around 2pm and dinner at 6 or 7pm. For whatever reason I tend to be, when I am working, hungrier in the morning rather than late afternoon to evening so I eat according to that pattern. Otherwise I know if I let myself get overly hungry I will over eat on junk food. |

| Wow! Great suggestions, thank you so much!!
I tried squats in my apartment and my thighs are killing me! A couple of years ago I had legs of steel when on a crew team and now I can barely do four squats... It is crazy how out of shape you can be and not even realize it! |

| Weight Loss | Q. About Metabolism can it be permanently damaged? | Apr 27 2008 09:50 (UTC) |
20 |
| I do not think you can permanently "hurt" your metabolism...
An individuals metabolism tends to slow down as they age. Also, after years of forcing your metabolism into constant starvation mode it could take several months for it to "heal" itself... or get back to normal. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you will burn throughout the day. If you are interested in working out, and increasing the amount of calories you burn a day I would definitely gain muscle mass. Also, if you google basal metabolic rate you can calculate a rough estimate of the amount of calories you should be burning a day to gain, maintain and lose. Goodluck! |

| Weight Loss | Why broke people stay fat. | Apr 24 2008 15:21 (UTC) |
18 |
| Pretty much everyone has said this already but:
Freezing is your friend! Buy meat and whole wheat bread when it is on sale and freeze it! Also even if you need to drive a bit of a distance to get to a farmer's market it is SO worth it! You can go there once a week with $20, and feed yourself plus a couple of people on fruit and veggies all week. I even freeze fruit into little baggies that I can use in smoothies later on. This way you can buy fruit for cheap while it is in season but eat it whenever... plus buying it pre - frozen at the grocery is too expensive. Also, find a chinese grocer! You can buy a 10 pound bag of rice (sushi, brown etc...) for $5. And that bag will last you for months! And finally if you are the type of junk/processed food eater I was/am (hahaha) I eat out ALOT. When I eat junk I am buying coffee drinks, lunch and dinner almost every day. But when I eat healthy I tend to make my own meals. So at first it seems as if you are fronting alot of money to eat healthy... but in the long run you are saving ALOT. |

| Weight Loss | I hate that people are noticing | Apr 24 2008 03:49 (UTC) |
23 |
| That is NOT weird at all...
I know for me personally: it seems that once people notice you are losing weight you are then being held accountable to meet everyone's expectations. The expectation being that you will continue to lose weight, and not gain it back. The original motivation to make yourself healthy seems to be robbed a tad bit by public pressure... Since people noticed you lost weight, they will then notice you gained it back... and, for me at least, there is a level of shame there. Shame at not succeeding possibly? Also, when you start to lose weight and therefore appear more attractive to the general public you definitely receive more male attention... For me, male attention <other than from my boyfriend ; ) > makes me extremely uncomfortable... Not out of insecurity, but out of a type of awkwardness at having to hint/tell them to bugger off! Hope that makes sense! |

| shiptona, that is very interesting. I actually remember watching a clip about the Native Americans in the U.S. What they ultimately landed up doing was eating their traditional diet. After doing that they lost weight and had decreased rates of diabetes. Of course I am sure they started exercising more too. So interesting.
Jened, your metabolism slowed after your 2nd child! It is amazing to me how much the female body changes after giving birth. I just recently found out that your foot size can increase and never go back! Agh, but I am a size 10 now!! haha. : ) |

| I hit up my local market and buy as much fruit as I can carry. This time of the year it is beautiful fruit and cheap!
I buy whatever is in season there: strawberries, blueberries, and bananas. Sometimes I throw rasberries and blackberries in there. Then when I get home with that I cut everything into tiny peices and portion them out into baggies. I freeze the fruit and make smoothies for my breakfast. I just throw the baggie in with some juice. Orange Pineapple is my favorite. This is what I have bought recently:

| Sorry! I just edited it so my question would be more clear.
Suldrun, I totally agree with you. I used to think people just have faster metabolisms. But then I started to really watch what they were eating. I realized my super thin friend just eats completely differently than I, she eats sweets constantly but stops the minute she is satisfied. |

| OH MY GOSH, I THINK ABOUT THAT ALL THE TIME!!
On her biography show they talked about how when she went to cooking school abroad she gained 15 pounds. She seems like she is petite and of smaller stature so that probably looked like alot more than 15 pounds on her. Anyway I think she just watches her sweets and stops when she is full. |

| Weight Loss | headaches | Jul 22 2007 20:49 (UTC) |
|
| That could be attributed to alot of factors.
Definitely if you are not eating enough hunger could be shown through headaches rather than stomach pangs. I know that happens to me. Also, the summer heat and being dehydrated. Eating alot of junk food and not enough fruit. Or it could just be caffeine withdrawal. But I know that when I get headaches it is always because I am not doing something right to my body. Like, not sleeping enough. But if they persist despite changing into healthier habits definitely go see the doctor because it might be something more serious. |

| This is such a hard topic to bring up... Even when you are well-intentioned.
There was a point in my life when I was approached regarding my weight gain. Like you, it was because they were worried about my health not appearance. But it still hurt. It is such a sensitive topic, I did not receive it well at all. To this day I still resent them for it, and that was over 3 years ago. On one hand I feel strongly that weight should never be discussed. But on the other hand I can not ignore the fact that I would have eaten my way into obesity if someone had not brought the weight gain to my face. Of course you know you are eating alot but often times you are in denial about how much you are gaining and its impact on your health/daily life. So I am conflicted on this topic. If you do approach her about it I would do it in a way where it is clear that you are serious about losing 20 pounds and want to do it with her because the more support you have the better... Plus it could be good bonding time. Say something like I am concerned about both of our health, I want us to grow old together and to do that I think we both need to get healthy... Goodluck! |

| Weight Loss | weight loss and breast size | May 15 2007 15:35 (UTC) |

| At 5'6, going from 177 pounds to 160 I lost close to a full cup. At my heaviest I was a very full double D and now I am a very loose double D, almost D.
And I still have 30 pounds to go. It is very likely your breast size will decrease as you lose pounds (of fat) since breasts are made of fat. Goodluck! and I feel your pain. : ) |

| Weight Loss | The Truth About School Lunch | Apr 25 2007 22:55 (UTC) |

| I would go for the sandwich line. You can do a filling sandwich at a relatively decent calorie amount.
I usually get 2 slices of rye (70 calories each), 2 slices of swiss cheese (full fat swiss = 100 calories each), tomato's and mustard. Keep the meat slices to around 2 - 4, if you have a meat sandwich do not have cheese on it, pile on veggies you like and pass on the mayo and oil and layer on the mustard. It is about a 400 calorie sandwich. That is my staple as a University student. I also eat caesar salad (dressing on the side; I dip my fork in the dressing then pierce the lettuce and do not eat more than 1oz of dressing), with no bacon bits and only eat a few croutons. This comes out to about 250 calories. Sometimes I will also get a slice of pizza (dab the oil off) and 2 light and fit yogurts. This comes out to 200 calories. My food combinations are so strange, haha... |

| Weight Loss | So check this out | Apr 25 2007 22:15 (UTC) |

| I think you are definitely doing the right thing. In my opinion, weight gain is due to bad eating habits and maybe even some psychological factors.
So that magic pill and shakes are only making them lose weight, not help them understand why they gained it in the first place and how to keep it off. Also alot of their weightloss is probably due to water weight and muscle loss... That is not healthy at all, and even if they get down to their goal weights they will be ridiculiously flabby with fat and no muscle. |

| Weight Loss | How do you behave at a buffet? | Apr 16 2007 00:09 (UTC) |
6 |
| I used to go to buffets ALL the time... but now I go not so often. : ) Maybe once a month? Either chinese or indian...
I usually let that be an "off" time. I just let myself do whatever I feel like. My usual method is taking tiny portions of everything I want. I do always avoid the fried rice because it is so easy to go overboard calorie-wise with that stuff. I have found that when you are eating healthier and smaller portions your stomache shrinks. So when I go to the buffet now I eat so much less than I did before. I just watch my rice intake (no more than 2 cups) since that is the fastest way to exceed alot of calories. |

I love the word sammie! |

| I totally agree with you that the "good" and "bad" rhetoric as related to weight, food and dieting needs to be abondoned!!
I always try to remind myself not to use those terms because they are absurd and so negative... And just further reinforces anti-women (and person) sentiments as populized in our society. ughh! |

| I think that is a good idea. I have just lost 10 pounds and am looking to go for another 20 - 30. It has been really slow! I have only lost one pound this month even though I had huge weekly deficits. I am going to eat my maintance calories. It will take longer to lose it but at least its better than agonizing over not losing weight. | |||
