I am so sorry for your loss. I had to make the same difficult decision last week with my 15 y/o lab/chow mix "Dudley". It was so hard to let go, but so much better for him.

Hopefully, getting support from family, friends, and this site will get you through this difficult time rather than m&m's or pizza.  I am an emotional eater too and it is easy to get into a downward spiral! Hang in there and lots of hugs to you.

I'd like to join too!  I weigh 220 and am 5'9''. After dinner grazing and not working out enough are my problems.  I would like to weigh 145 but my first goal is 199 by August 31.  I have been off and on this site for about a year...but for the last two weeks I have been getting serious about logging calories and increasing activity.  I weighed this AM and am -2 lbs!!! YEAH

This thread is great ... I love the dinner suggestions and the snack ideas. I will definitely try them.

How often do you all weigh in?  Can anyone suggest a good scale thats not too expensive? Are digital better?

When the kids are around, how about instead of letting dad focus on impending doom ...get him to take a trip down memory lane.  "Oh..Dad, then you need to make sure the kids know the story about...."

Then in private ask him what's going on. Talk about death may be a sign of depression. Or maybe it is a little bit of a guilt trip because he is feeling lonely, wants to see his family more and wants to know if he will be "missed".

As people get older and have physical problems it is only natural to contemplate death and end of life issues. Maybe a frank 1:1 talk about his wishes and helping him put together a "living will" may put his mind at easy and end the random morbid talk.

Unfortunately, death is a fact of life.  In the last year we have had two family members die of terminal illness and my mom go under Hospice care.  I have had to do a lot of explaining to do to my five year old.  As much as we would like to shield our kids from this reality ...it is impossible.  Tell your kids that while you don't expect grandad to die any time soon, death is natural part of all living things. There are a lot of good books out there for children that discuss this. Leave the door open for them to ask questions later.
Weight Loss Beraking news to my wife....Help Jul 03 2007

Techmonkey,

I wish you the best in dealing with this situation. It truly seems that you have only best intentions for your wife.

When I first read this post, I was initially concerned that it was my husband posting.  Her situation appears to closely match mine.  Trying to ignore the situation or hope it goes away is like trying to pretend there isn't a "pink elephant" in the room.  Trust me she is well aware of the situation. Her physical and emotional symtoms feed on each other and may create a continued downward spiral.

If she has been dealing with depression for 1.5 years with no success, then it is time to change tactics.  She may need medication or a change in medication.  Please make sure she also sees a licensed counselor or therapist (MD's may be good with meds, but most don't spend a lot of time talking).

Also, give her lots of opportunities to discuss her feelings with you without being judgemental or trying to FIX things.  She probably needs a hug and a shoulder to cry on, not someone telling how to eat. I am sure that being an intelligent working woman she already knows how to eat healthy. You can't fix this and telling her how to fix this will lead to resentment.

Realize what this woman probably needs most is TIME.  She works full time and has two children. That is two full time jobs (thankfully it sounds like you all share much of the responsibility). Giving her the opportunity to workout on her own and have some personal time may help. Walks with the family are great...but I burn a lot more calories getting on the treadmill and turning up the ipod.  Encourage to take a break after work to have 30 minutes to exercise.

Finally, never ever bring this subject up in times of anger!  You may say something you'll regret.

Just my 2 cents....good luck

MMM..love the gumbo! I recently made a low country boil for friends of mine (crab, shrimp, onion, potatoes, andouille sausage, corn and garlic cloves - for non-southerns who do not know) and was pleased how much I could have and stay within calories!

BTW - I was born in New Orleans, went to college in AL and now live in GA... so I guess I qualify as southern.

Hi everyone!!! - I didn't workout any this weekend...was sick with a cold/fever on Sat,Sun, and Mon.  Fortunately, my appetite was down too, but I only lost 1lb this week:(   - Working out seems to be the only thing that takes those pounds off.

Spookums - I am on the road a lot for work too and have lots of "lunch" meetings. Go for the salads with lots of veggies on them or baked chicken - ask to substitute french fries for the fresh vegetables. Ask for low fat dressing on the side or flavored vinegar and lemon.  For the coffee meetings - look up your favorite flavored coffee drink for fat and calorie content (that was enough to scare me off)...  try hot tea or black coffee and use equal or splenda to sweeten.  Instead of a pastry or donut go for the fruit cup or yougart.

Another trick I use is to pack a veggie bag of carrots, celery and cucumbers which I eat in my car before my lunch meeting. It fills you up and you get your veggies in.  - Good luck

Hi everyone - checking in for the day. I did 45 minutes of treadmill at 5% incline, and my 6 sets of abs.  I am really pround of my self that yesterday I stayed within my calorie budget, drank all my water,  did not eat after 7pm, and worked out - I accomplished all of my daily goals and feel really motivated for the weekend. (This is a definite improvement!!!)

I will be thinking of y'all in cold/snowy weather - we are suppposed to be in the mid 60's here in Atlanta. Hopefully, I will get to exercise outdoors this weekend. :)

I won't be online again till Monday....so I will post my exercise time then.  Good luck to everyone over the weekend!!!!!

(My name vote is still on "A weigh we go"!

I worked out for 30 minutes last night by jumping on the trampoline with my 5 year old.  We played a vigorous game of "simon says" that included lots of jumping jacks and tag. I also did three sets of "rowboat" situps and leg lifts with my fifty lbs. child holding on to my legs.  This may sound silly but it was a nice break from the treadmill and allowed my son to have some "mommy time".

I love the name A weigh we go!

Go team three!!! I need to loose 65 lbs, hopefully during this challenge I can loose 18-20 of those nasty pounds - the challenge last for 6 weeks right? Let's help each other out. Maybe our team name could be the combined total of how many pounds we all want to loose during the challenge?  (ie; the 200 lb loosers) Just an idea.

I am new to this site too and I love it! I have 65 lbs to loose and it seems so far away.  I think small steps will help!

Here are today's goals;

1. Water - at least 64oz

2. Exercise at least 20 minutes

3. No "coke classic" beverages - This is a hard one for me!!!

4. Log on my food journal to track calories - have logged for the last two days, and I am trying to get a handle on how many calories I consume and then readjust.  OMG - I can't believe how quickly the calories and fat add up! I thought I was eating healthy!

Lauren we have a lot in common! My story is very simular to yours (except for the smoking issue). Congrats on hitting "post" .  It is so hard to admit to yourself that there is a problem.  Everyone can see my problem and I hate seeing loved ones with "sadness' or disappointment in their faces with regards to my weight.  I recently found out that my cholesteral is elevated and I know this is not healthy. I want to be there for my family and be the fun kind of mommy I know I should be...not the sit on the sidelines because I'm too fat mommy.

I think with small children you have to sneak in exercise.  Take a 10 minute walk break at work or play tag with the kids after school.

I plan to take small steps towards better  behavior and not focus on the scale too much.  Maybe we all should post daily goals and then post the results.

My goal today: Smaller portions, more water, and at least 20 minutes of exercise.  I let you know how it works out.

Well, at age 36 it is time to get real. .. at 5'9'' and 215, I  am overweight.   I am not sure when I got fat. All through HS and college I was wearing size 8-10, ran track and never thought about weight or food. Unfortunately,  bad eating behaviors continued while my physical activity decreased.  Now I am in a fix! I am tired of pinning my button blouses so they will close, having multiple sizes in my closet, and avoiding certain social situations because I do not want old friends to see how I look.

2006 was a rough year, and I had a lot of "excuses". I now realize for 2007 I need to be a little selfish and focus on myself.   My struggle is how to juggle a full-time career,  a darling 5 y.o. son, a beautiful 16 mo old daughter, a loving husband and lots of "close" family.  Exercise is a must! I have to either give up sleep (that I so desparately need) or work out late - after kids are asleep.

I am glad for this thread, because I need the support. I have never posted before or even admitted my problem out loud to myself or others.  I guess this post is the beginning of a contract with myself to loose the weight.  I am now a size 16-18 woman's size but want to be a size 12 by January 2008.
