Weight Loss What part of your body loses fat first? Aug 05 2009

I don't know for sure where I lost it first but my Mom used to joke that the women on her side of the family tend to lose it first in our breasts & fingers :)

I have a 6 month old and I make her pureed baby foods. It's a similar concept. I would never attempt eating all my vegetables this way...I love the crisp texture of vegetables like cauliflower & broccoli...but I do use the purees for sauces to go over those vegetables. Try roasted bell peppers & cauliflower. It's fun to experiment with.

I am underweight. Haven't you ever thrown out the scale and based your over all health on how you feel? I feel the healthiest that I've ever been. I can run over 11 miles... I feel scrappy and although I have pathetically scrawny arms I have really strong legs and a lot of energy. I delivered a 9 lb baby in excellent health and have breastfed her exclusively for the first 6 months of her life. When I thought my milk was starting to slow down when I started running longer distances I did the responsible thing and started eating more. I am not afraid to gain weight especially if it is muscle mass which is what I am currently working on. I can assure you that if I ever start feeling fatigued or begin developing health concerns then I will definitly change my life style. Most marathon runners are underweight.

This post was to discuss something as simple as finding a nice pair of jeans. If you are truley concerned about me I prefer that you send me an individual message and not post any more responses on such a public forum. This post was not intended for such a deep conversation.

Thank you though for your input and for caring about my children. I feel you're trying to be helpful and that is a good quality to have. I, however, am not comfortable with having this "conversation" in this chat room-like setting.

hey laura. I had a baby in January so I had to diet  to lose my baby weight. I haven't had an intentional deficit in my diet since I hit my goal weight (which was my prepregnancy weight). When I started to dip below that weight because I started running more I consulted my dr. and she said I was absolutly fine. You must have read my journals from March which stated that I was working on maintaining and that I was learning how to cancel out my deficit because I felt I shouldn't lose anymore because it effected my breast supply. So since then I have increased my calorie intake. My Mom was concerned too and that is why I sought medical advice. I am good and finding jeans isn't really a huge problem...it was conversation. Everyone has bigger problems than not finding flattering clothing.

There is this consignment store where I live called Buffalo Exchange and they only accept clothes (you get paid for the stuff you exchange) that are high quality & fashionable so they have a nice selection. I bought a pair of billabong jeans there yesterday for 10 dollars. Its nice because I can wear them for awhile and if I end up not being crazy about them I can take them back and probably get 5 dollars back store credit (they give you half of what they sell them for)...kind of like "renting" an outfit I suppose. It also lets you test brands because if I end up liking these jeans a lot then I would definitly go to a store that sells Billabong (Pacific Sun) and buy them full priced.

Oh and btw watergirl I loved what you said about the butt crack. My brother is 19 and he wears these really tight jeans (he used to shop in the girls department for them...I guess it was a trend) and whenever he's playing on the floor with my son I can see his butt crack.

Original Post by elizamary77:

I love Buckle and they ususally carry a good variety of brands that will fit different shapes so you might do good there I'm not sure about a size 0 as I dont wear there but I'm pretty sure they do.

A Buckle just opened at the mall closest to me and I considered going. I have tried their jeans at 2nd hand stores but of course they only had a couple pairs. Anything over 100 dollars would make me cringe at this point in my life (trying to save more than spend) but you're right that if you know you'll get a lot of use out of them then its totally worth it.

Another one of my problems is that I sometimes get a pair of jeans and I like them for a while but then I get greedy and want a different pair...that is why I try not to spend to much. I bought a pair of Abercrombie ones this weekend and thought I was splurging once I handed over the 80 bucks And on a side note why do those stores smell so strongly and are so dark? I can't even tell the quality of the clothing until I'm out in the sunshine. Is it weird to be lying in bed with your husband and have someones headless set of abs plastered on your shopping bags next to you? Those abs probably belong to some underage  little boy...hence them cropping everything above their perfectly scultped shoulders.

Watergirl- My daughter won't be getting that pricey of things until she has her own job and knows the price of a dollar. I sound old but thats what parenting does to you I guess...I am still kicking myself for buying things full priced at Baby GAP and knowing she only wore the outfits once before she left some nastey stain on it or grew too big for it.

Thank you crazydiamond for responding. I was afraid that if I posted anything else it would just lead to more drama so I am very grateful to see your response.

I didn't mean to offend anyone either. That is why I went into this lounge and not one of the ones listed as "weightloss" or "fitness". I also didn't want to write "Hey all you people who are my size" in my title because I thought THAT would lead to some criticism. I had thought that maybe I would make a stir but then I thought people would only be offended if they wanted to be a size zero and I that's not something I wanted to assume. I think a woman with an ideal BMI that is my height is supposed to be a size 6 or something.

I understand people getting frustrated with women writing posts like "Is 500 calories enough?" because obviously its not healthy and I think most of us get that big sister feeling that makes us want to shake the crazies out of them (especially if we know just how dangerous it is and what it could potentially do to their bodies) but I am not an ED case.

After I had my daughter I started training for a 1/2 marathon and I have a little frame. I am not dieting...just counting calories to make sure I am consuming what I burn...and enjoying socializing with other people who are health concious for one reason or another. I don't get to sit down with friends and talk about this stuff because they aren't interested. When I come on here I know my audience consists of people that have logged on specifically to envelope themselves with this sort of chat.

Well anyways. Thank you for not jumping down my throat. I hope you get down to that 7/8 if its something that will make you happy. I think its important to examine what you really want...if you're healthy where you are now (you're active, you eat properly) then you should really consider whether or not a 7/8 is worth the fight.

The only way I would be self-glorifying was if I considered a 0 better than any other size. Would you have considered me "dumb" if I had said that I was a size 14 and couldn't find jeans that fit me? No, you wouldn't have. You may have even offered up advice or moved onto another post.

I was really looking for help because just like everyone else on this website I have issues that I want to discuss with others. Sorry Crazydiamond that i didn't catch your sarcasm. I usually consider people good & kind; I don't assume people are trying to hurt others intentionally. I don't know why you would try to put down a complete stranger you don't know. There is just so much negativity in the world and in our everday lives I don't know why anyone would like to add to it if not necessary.

Pgeorgian...if you posted something about looking for a hat to fit your gigantic brain you wouldn't find any negative comments from me. I would have read the post, thought "I don't wear hats...no help here", and then I would have continued on.

And hotfuss...of course I don't think you're jealous. For all I know you're one of those women that maintain weight in all the right places and are a knock out in a bikini.  Most people don't like to be a size 0 because they prefer curves. I'm shaped like a little boy with stretch marks from two pregnancies and nonexistent breasts from feeding those babies.

A zero at Old Navy does not fit but the stores that I posted above like Abercrombie & Hollister carry a 00 and those fit. I should try Aeropostle...my sister loves their jeans. I have bought a lot of tank tops from there this season.

Crazydiamond- you should look for a 00. At first I thought that meant they would be short (I am 5'6) like a petite size but you can buy 00 LONG or Regular. Just to save you some time I can tell you that American Eagle DOES NOT carry a 00, Abercrombie DOES, Hollister DOES.

If you have a deficit then you should be losing. Maybe you don't burn as many calories as you think you do. What is your daily exercise routine and how many calories do you eat?

Fitness Ideas on skinny legs? Jun 20 2009

You can always run but I am not sure that will necessarily help. I have found that somethings are just genetic. If you think they (being your legs) have potential you could do things like calf raises...you just stand there and raise yourself to your tippy-toe position and then lower...do that throughout the day. I lie on my back with ankle weights, knees in the air, and lift my legs about 50 reps on each leg each day. This works your big thigh muscle. I have nice legs but I have a saggy butt...you win some; you lose some.

Weight Loss I didn't realize how many calories I've been eating... Jun 18 2009

That is why people count their calories...some people just are clueless (not you anymore...pat on the back).

I am posting because no one else has but I am not sure this is what you're looking for...

1. Continue to count your calories. 3500 you don't burn will add a lb to you. If you eat 100 calories (that's one apple) more than you burn everyday for one year you will gain 10 lbs a year. It seems absurd but there is a reason people slowly gain weight throughout their lives and wake up one day wondering "WHAT HAPPENED". Knowledge is power. Find out how much you burn (trial and error is fine) and then stick with eating the right amount of food. I was once under the impression that everyone burned 2000 cals a day and that means that somedays (when I was just lazing around) I could have been eating 400 extra cals without even realizing it.

2. Fit exercise into your diet so you can eat more without feeling deprived. A normal person my size who doesn't exercise only burns 1600 cals a day. That is why I exercise...so I can enjoy food...if I only ate 1600 cals a day I would feel sad:( If you don't have energy go for a walk...it is not strenuous and you can burn over 100 cals in one hour.

3. Cut calories out of your meals. If you haven't already give up white flour, change to fat free or reduced fat dairy, cut back on empty cals like sweets, and increase low cal beneficial foods like vegetables (raw is their best form).

4. Don't be too drastic. Don't go for fad diets. Simply eat well (AND LESS) and exercise. It takes 30 days to form a habit. Stick with it and the results will be 'oh so sweet'.

Weight Loss Do you compensate for overeating at the next meal? Jun 16 2009
16:50 (UTC)

If I have a huge meal for one sitting I try to compensate the rest of the day. If I fail by the end of the night and have gone over what I burned then I will take it out of the next day. Sometimes a piece of cake needs to be gradually compensated for...100 calories for everyday the next week...then I don't feel deprived at the end of each day and a week later I am all caught up.

My inlaws are runners and my father-in-law has really bad knees (has to have one completely replaced next month at the age of 50) and they both take Sam E...I know they like it but I can't say to what extent...enough to purchase more of it while they were visiting me :)

Foods Calories in homemade Salsas? Jun 15 2009
22:57 (UTC)

I would say 10-15 cals for 2 tbsp of all vegetable salsas (no corn or beans) and 20-30 cals per 2 tbsp for fruited salsa. If there is corn or beans I would say 20 cals per 2 tbsp. I eat a lot of salsa and that seems to be pretty accurate but of course your friend may be hiding ingredients like oil which would up those cals. I just had friends that brought salsa to a party and told me it called for lots of italian dressing...I could actually see the oil in some light.

Foods A Little Picky, but I just need to eat better Jun 09 2009

You can train yourself to like "chunky" foods OR you can puree them into sauces for whole grain pastas or for relishes to go over chicken...things like that.

Most things are ok for you if they are eaten in moderation. If your Mom makes something really high in calories like mac n cheese then make sure to only have one serving and make sure you understand the portion of that particular serving.

I did two of the Slim In 6 ADVANCED videos called Tone It Up & Shape it up. They are good and I have continued to use many of the moves I learned in them everyday. I lost 30 lbs in the last 2 years but I can't say it was only from this work out series. I also changed my whole lifestyle and started running. Good luck.

Foods How's my diet? May 26 2009

It is a good diet but since you were looking for improvement and no one has given you a response I thought I would give you one. Chicken thighs are dark meat and so a breast would be better because of the fat content.  I don't know what you mean by LIGHT wheat bread...because you didn't add WHOLE to it I might assume there are some whole grains but not all...if that is the case I would switch to whole wheat bread. Are you still working in the restaurant when you have dinner...sometimes restaurants saute their veggies in butter (because they taste better) or large amounts of oil so you should be aware of that. And since you are LOOKING for improvement I would add more vegetables to your diet. You have 3 fruits before dinner but no veggies. I don't know how much you're getting in your dinner but I would make atleast SOME raw.

The fat WILL NOT turn into hard muscle. Fat turning into muscle would be like water turning into wine...a miracle. You should keep up your cardio inorder to lose the fat and reveal those muscles underneath.

P.S. Maybe you should find someone else to take advice from WinkContinue to do research and make sure your sources are reliable.

Weight Loss Weight loss without exercise May 10 2009
02:33 (UTC)

Of course you can lose weight without exercise. All you need is a calorie deficit. 3500 calories per pound. So if you have a deficit of 500 calories a day then it should take you 7 days to lose one lb. Make sure to find out how many calories you burn without exercise. I am 5'6 and 105 lbs and if I don't exercise I only burn roughly 1600 calories a day which means I could only eat 1100 calories everyday. That is a very low amount...that is why I exercise...so I can eat more.

Foods Granola...Is packed with suger why does everyone reccomend it? May 05 2009

A lot of packaged granola is high in sugar but the core ingredients are good for you (oats, nuts, dried fruit, flax)...that is why I make my own and still eat it in moderation because it is high in calories.

Fitness Why is my stomach so F-A-T!!??!!?! Apr 27 2009

My stomach fat didn't go away until I got my overall weight down to under 110 lbs which means my BMI is considered under weight. If you build a lot of muscle then you might be able to get rid of the fat without the weight...everyone's body is different. My fat just so happened to like that area on me and so it took a lot of calorie counting and exercise to get rid of it. It was worth it though. I love having a flat stomach and I really never thought it would happen to me because its always been my trouble area. I do sit ups and things of that nature but its not what caused the fat to go away...I do those to tone my stomach and help with my posture.

I am 110 too and for awhile I was running 8 miles everyday and I started losing weight. I cut down my mileage (except on the weekends) and incorporated light weighted workouts in addition...increasing muscle mass should help put on a little weight AND look better. I do squats, lunges, floor workouts for my legs (and knees) along with stomach exercises one day and the next day I work on toning my arms and back with 5 lb weights. I got most of my exercises from a video called "Slim in 6" and sometimes I rent movies or watch things online so that I don't get bored.

Foods What are your favorite 100 or less meals? Apr 20 2009

-1 cup chopped raw broccoli with homemade dip (2 tbsp light sour cream & 2-6 tbsp salsa)

-6 oz raw mushrooms with 2 tbsp hummus

-1/2 cup plain fat free yogurt with 1/2 cup berries and a little bit of splenda

-slice of Sara Lee whole wheat bread with some sort of jelly or jam

I too enjoy egg whites with fresh veggies...a little bit of goat cheese goes a long way because of its flavor

I agree with taking a shower, chewing gum & brushing your teeth. I brush my teeth so the taste of sugar isn't lingering. Oh and also the big salad thing...I eat HUGE salads with lots of veggies and then I mix light (could do fat free because its not about the taste) sour cream with salsa and use that as a really low cal dressing. It really fills me up to the point of not wanting to eat anymore.

I can't resist my late night cravings so I actually save 300-500 calories for after dinner. I eat a really small breakfast and lunch and a snack right before I run around 5 pm. Then I have a large healthy dinner around 7 and then around 9 o clock when the cravings kick in I have a calorie budget to spend...sometimes I use it all and sometimes I just don't need it and it is a deficit. I've READ that eating right before bed is bad but I don't take it too seriously because I have a good BMI and overall am quite healthy. Sometimes I even use those calories in the middle of the night (2-3 in the morning) because I cannot go back to sleep without consuming a certain something-or-another...the other night it was sugar cookies :)
