Health & Support Anyone else with ADD??? Did you have trouble getting diagnosed? Apr 23 2007

I've tried every single herb/natural "cure" for ADD to no avail.  I really don't like taking medication, but sometimes you just HAVE to.  I'm going to talk to my doc about the Strattera.  The side effects are really annoying, and I can't tell if it's working.  If she tries to put me on an ssri I'll refuse to take it.  She can't make me take anything I don't want to.  If that happens I'll go see a psych.  It's just annoying that I know what's going on in my head and my doc won't beleive me.
Vegetarian Soy Cheese? Apr 18 2007

Follow Your heart is very good, although you still usually have to nuke it in the microwave to get it to melt completely.  I'm working on making my own "cheese" but haven't perfected it yet.  Try using equal parts nutritional yeast and flour, and adding vegan margarine/oil, water, cornstarch, and spices to get the flavor you want.

I'm exclusive to Whole Foods as well.  They won't sell any food items with any chemical ingredients in them (including trans fats, HFCS, and chemical sugars) so I like that there's a few less things to be looking for on the labels.

No clue.  If you ever find out, let me know.  I still log it as regular natural PB, but feel good about the fact that I'm probably saving myself a few cals here and there.
Weight Loss Scientist identify obesity gene Apr 13 2007

I agree that genetics do play a role, but I think once all this information is "out there" and there are drugs for it and whatnot, that people will use it as an excuse for not making healthy changes to their lives - "Oh I have the obesity gene so it wouldn't matter if ate healthy and exercised, so I'll just sit here and eat a Big Mac" - that kind of mentality.

I hate to admit this, but I heard doctor Phil say once (I was waiting for the news to come on after the show, seriously) that a person cannot be obese without a lifestyle that supports it.  As much as I'd like to clock that guy in the face, he's got a point.
Vegetarian How Vegan is Beer? Apr 13 2007
15:42 (UTC)
I've been mulling over the idea of making my own beer.  My dad does, and depending on how long you let it ferment in the bottles, it can end up having the alcoholic content of wine (hehe).  Hmmm...must find room in tiny apartment for beer brewing stuff :)

I went veg around 16, which I know is slightly older, but I definitely agree with what everyone is saying about getting the right nutrients.  I didn't know what I was doing when I switched to being veg as a teenager, and I basically lived off pizza, ice cream, and anything with cheese.  Not exactly the healthiest route.  Try to steer her toward unprocessed foods rather than packaged stuff.  Lots of fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, etc.  and easy on the cheese.  Even the "fake meats" aren't that great for you if eaten excessively.
Health & Support Past injuries make exercise hard Apr 13 2007

I have a permanent back injury (curved spine and tilted pelvis due to head trauma) as well as a bad knee - patella femoral syndrome, which is basically where your kneecap "pops off track."  Mine is caused by flat feet and is probably exacerbated by my leg-length discrepancy caused by my back problem.

Anyway, I did PT for my back twice (didn't help) and my knee once (helped) and saw a chiropractor (didn't help) but I found that doing yoga helped a WHOLE LOT.  My back/hip doesn't hurt nearly so often now.  As far as the knee - knees are tricky so make sure you talk to your doc/PT about what's okay for you to do.  My PT basically told me that "if it hurts; don't do it.  If it doesn't hurt; go for it."  I'm even learning to run now, although I wear a brace that holds my kneecap in place when I'm doing anything high impact.  Explore your options.

curious - my brand varies (usually the 365 Whole Foods brand) but I always buy natural peanut butter, no salt.  (Ingredients = peanuts and that's it).  You can lower fat/calories by pouring off the oil on top of the PB when you first open the jar instead of mixing it back in, but I'm not sure by how much.  I do this with every jar I buy.  The PB usually stays very spread-able, but if I have a problem I nuke it in the microwave for a few seconds and it spreads great.

I also practice ashtanga yoga for 60 minutes, twice a week.  I've recently incorporated more cardio/strength training into my workout schedule (I run and lift now too) but there was a time a few years ago when I dropped 30 lbs just by eating healthy and doing yoga.

I just discovered these: http://www.turtlemountain.com/products/so_del icious_novelties.html

and the raspberry are amazing.  Not like popsicles - tastes like creamy raspberry vanilla ice cream and they 're pretty big too.  *Drool*

A lot of crazy rumors fly around about artificial sweeteners and a lot of them are ridiculous.  However, one that is actually true is that a lot of people are sensitive to artificial sugars and don't realize it (the same way that a lot of people are lactose intolerant and don't make the connection) and have headaches.  Anyone with chronic headaches or migraines should cut out the artificial sweeteners for a bit and see if there's any improvement.

I've also read that some of the chemicals in artificial sweeteners can interfere with certain psychotropic medications, especially those prescribed for bipolar disorder (I did quite a bit of research on bipolar disorder during college).  Not sure if that's just another "scare tactic" but thought I'd throw it out there.

I don't consume artificial sugars because it grosses me out to eat pretty much anything that's chemically altered.  I don't like eating things that had to be created in a lab...

I work with developmentally disabled adults.  My role is mostly program planning so I'm a desk person too.  I try to get out for walks with my clients a few times a week though.

My work actually started this thing as a "team building exercise" where everyone in our department has to wear pedometers during their shift.  We started 2 weeks ago and the contest is going until June and whichever team (there's 4 teams) has the most miles wins something.  I've been averaging about 1.5-2 miles per day - some days less, some more.  Don't know if that's good or not...

I'm at .087 right now.  I've been in meetings all morning.
Vegetarian Soy milk suggestions? Apr 09 2007

8th Continent isn't vegan.  It's also not a natural soymilk, so if you're doing the soy thing for health, it's not your best bet (they add artificial flavors in there).  Ditto for Soy Slender.

I like Silk.  Non GMO soybeans and I can actually pronounce everything on the label.  I started drinking Silk with the "very vanilla" (made for kids) because it tastes like a vanilla milkshake (I was scared of soy at first!) but it's horrible in calories (and sugar probably) so I started drinking regular vanilla.  When I started wanting to lose weight again, I weaned myself onto the light vanilla.  Now the light tastes really good and when I have to buy the regular (a lot of times the store is out of it for some reason) it tastes too creamy for me.  I actually like the light best.

Rice Dream is also very good as a milk and soy alternative.

Dude, that pic is awesome!  I keep saying I'll wait until I'm all old and have white hair to get dreads.  I'll be the crazy old hippie raver grandma with piercings and tattoos haha.

Geez, how do you get so little salt?

Oh dang - it's 5pm.  You guys got me through until the end of my shift.  Thank you SO much.  I'm outta here.  Got a 45min commute home and then I'm crashing out.  Have a good rest of the day and I'll catch up with you later :)

I'll have to try that :)  Man, a lot of the people I hang out with are around 19-20 so I think that's why I have an age complex.  Even my boyfriend is 2 years younger.  I really only know like 3 people who are older than I am.  It's tough to feel hot when I'm standing next to some chick that's only just out of HS!  That, and some of my friends jokingly calling me "mom" doesn't help matters.

Mine shrunk to a C, which I suppose is still respectable...

Lucky you with the anti-gravity butt :)  How does one go about lifting a butt anyway?  I know you can't spot reduce but there has to be something...

Haha, I was pink for a while too.  Everyone knew me by my hair.  Now I wear wigs when I go out to clubs and stuff but it's not the same...

Lately my thing has been wanting dreads and I racked my brain for a way to justify that at my job but didn't come up with anything that would fly with management.

I think chicks with big boobs carry the weight well because a lot of the weight is, well, boob.  Mine shrunk though when I lost weight though - I used to be a full D and I was so proud of that, especially since I didn't get my boobs until I was 22 haha.

My problem lately is my butt.  I just got a full-length mirror after not seeing my own butt for over a year and it's, uh, sagging shall we say?  I'm not ready for gravity to kick in at 26 so I'm trying to remedy that.

I think my highest size was a 12, but some of my clothes were even tight then so I might have been a 14 for a bit.  There was a period of time where I schlepped around in PJ pants and didn't give a crap so judging size was kinda hard...

muscle is good :)  I can't tell if I'm small-framed or what - I have small bones but a big chest and I carry my weight rather well (when I have clothes on, anyway).  I think somewhere in teh 150s was my highest and then I dropped down to 128 then started being an idiot and not taking care of myself and forgetting to eat and went down to 118 then bounced back up to the 130s and I'm 126 now.  Originally my goal was to be back at 118 again, but I'm not sure I can do that without starving myself so I'm just trying to ignore scale numbers and concentrate on body fat and stuff.  I'm like a size 8 right now.

I know what motivated me - I saw a picture of myself when I'd gained a bunch of weight and I hadn't even realized I looked like that.  It wasn't one pic either - every picture of me from that day was horrifying.

I'm actually pretty happy with how I look now from the waist up, but I've got thick legs and some white girl booty going on...

A size in 5 weeks?  And with no weight loss?  Go YOU, that means you're replacing fat with muscle.  Nice.

I've actually been gaining slowly for the past month (pissing me off) but I put on a pair of pants last night that are getting very loose indeed, so I think I'm doing the same thing.
