Weight Loss I need help learning how to count calories... Jan 23 2009

Activity does allow you to eat more.... so does your age... so does your muscle mass.... If you are not comfortable eating 1350.... try more....see if you still loose weight..  If you dont... and still want to eat more add more movement.. every "body" is different and so you may have to experiment to see what works for you.  I am also a firm believer in watching how hungry you are and what you ate.... some foods trigger me to eat more... some keep me satisfied for a long time and I don't even think about food until my bodys telling me to eat...  For me I cannot eat much refined sugar/ flour in the morning... no donuts...bagels or even bran muffins...  otherwise I am in the cupboard all day looking for something else to eat.  I think the real key is awareness.... what you are eating .... how much.... why.... what you ate before that did not satisfy you  .... how much movement you are getting in.   I read some study that showed people lost weight just because they were recording what they were doing... apparently just the act of recording makes you aware and I am guessing encourages you to eat less.

Use the calorie count tools to figure out your daily calorie intake. go under my account....account settings.... then at the bottom it will say daily calorie goal....click on advice .... enter all your personal information and calorie count will do the rest. Get a food scale and measure/weigh everything you put in your mouth.  Enter it all into caloriecount.  Then as you eat you can check your intake of certain key nutrients under analysis.  If you hover over the highlighted date with your mouse cursor, it will tell you how much vitamin a, c, iron, calcium ect   you are eating.   Lots of other tools on the web to calculate daily calorie intake.  Honestly though if you are eating healthly,( low fat meat, whole grains... fruits and veggies)  and weighing yourself works.... why change?   Its alot of work to enter all your food choices too.

Seems to me that there was no "UNITED STATES" when the framers of the constitution were born and so they would have to grandfather themselves in.  They were British Citizens when born...

Which does not speak to the issue of "dual citizenship"

The framers said nothing about dual citizenship.....  Born in US seems to me to be a "natural born citizen"

I do not suffer from an ED where I need to gain weight but I am a piano player.   Certainly you probably lost muscle in your hands and arms but also your skin may not be as elastic... not enough fatty acids in your diet... which may have affected your span...  just a thought....

Ps check out wikipedia.... there are muscles in your hand...  as well as fatty tissues

They are all good.  Here in the states I don't believe that we get a true yam unless you are at a specialty store... do a google search... true yams are as big as your forearm.  What we call "yams" here is a darker fleshed sweet potatoe.

http://homecooking.about.com/od/howtocookvege tables/a/sweetpotatodiff.htm

Supposedly butternut squash is better for you than acorn less calories more nutrients... and both are better than sweet potatoes...

Not to direct you away from this site.. I love calorie count... but www.nutritiondata.com does a nice job of visually rating foods based on their nutrition and fullness factors...

Foods I Want to Like Vegetables!! Sep 17 2008
19:51 (UTC)

Only get the freshest vegetables....and eat a few every day... just a bite or two... your body will adjust to the new flavors...takes a while for your taste buds to adjust to the new flavors.... my own personal theory is that the body will end up liking what ever food is available .... so you have to give it vegetables  on a regular basis to change your taste buds...

until then... all the above suggestions about hiding veggies are good.... try fresh ones in a healthy dip you like....

make sure that you are cooking them properly.... I never liked asparagus until I realized that It tastes best only slightly cooked....not boiled to death..

My DH 43 years old hated tomatoes all his life.... now trying some and says they are "all right"....it can be done

Weight Gain Measuring - good or bad? Apr 18 2008

My problem is not undereating but overeating so when I don't measure I am unaware of how much I am eating.

Can you gain weight without measuring.... are you aware that you are eating too little?   Can you just conciously add more caloric but healthy foods to your diet like avocados and nuts and olive oils?  Watch yourself... be aware of what is working for you?  Evaluate .... then modify if it is not working.

Are you sure that you have not lost fat and gained muscle.  I think it is also important to have your body fat tested.   If you are a member of a  HMO they may do this for free or a minimal charge.  I also agree with the weighing everything post and the water post and the zig zag calorie post.  If I do not weigh  and log everything I end up eating alot more calories than I think.... but ultimately eating better and exercizing will improve your health no matter what you weigh and that helps me keep going even when I am not losing.... Go have your body fat tested... that way in 3  or 4 months you can check your real progress.

Health & Support What are the ideal percentages of fat, protein, carbs, etc? Mar 26 2008

I think every body is different.   Some can eat more carbs than others and I think that how much you exercise affects this as well. So if you are running marithons then more carbs is good.  Fat is not necessarily bad... especially if you are eating healthy fat... olive oil ... oils from nuts and avocados are ok...  And the doctor told my husband to take fish oil to lower his triglicerides so... like I said I think there is no one right answer.  Almonds are particularly good for your heart.  There was a study that indicated that almonds helped control blood sugar and insulin levels and the Iowa womens health study indicated that increased consumption of nut butters decreased the risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart disease.

I also found this study that indicated a diet rich in fat from almonds helped women lose more weight

study published in the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders that included 65 overweight and obese adults suggests that an almond-enriched low calorie diet (which is high in monounsaturated fats) can help overweight individuals shed pounds more effectively than a low calorie diet high in complex carbohydrates. Those on the almond-enriched low calorie diet consumed 39% of their calories in the form of fat, 25% of which was monounsaturated fat. In contrast, those on the low calorie diet high in complex carbohydrates consumed only 18% of their calories as fat, of which 5% was monounsaturated fat, while 53% of their calories were derived from carbohydrate. Both diets supplied the same number of calories and equivalent amounts of protein. After 6 months, those on the almond-enriched diet had greater reductions in weight (-18 vs. -11%), their waistlines (-14 vs. -9%), body fat (-30 vs. -20%), total body water (-8 vs. -1%), and systolic blood pressure (-11 vs. 0%). Those eating almonds experienced a 62% greater reduction in their weight/BMI (body mass index), 50% greater reduction in waist circumference, and 56% greater reduction in body fat compared to those on the low calorie high carbohydrate diet! Among those subjects who had type 1 diabetes, diabetes medication reductions were sustained or further reduced in 96% of those on the almond-enriched diet versus in 50% of those on the complex carbohydrate diet.

Weight Loss Is it okay to love food? Feb 21 2008
21:52 (UTC)

I don't just love food... I love good food.   When I smoked I loved cigarrettes.  I love good wine too and mixed drinks.  But what I love and what is best for my body and my mind are not always the same thing.

I think that loving food becomes a problem when food becomes an addiction that you are using to sooth yourself and stuff emotions with.   When I am craving something really comforting like mashed potatoes and fried chicken ( which I love but is probably not great for me )  I look at how I am feeling and if I am honest... many times I realize that I am anxious or angry or feeling out of sorts for someother reason.

Eating simply helps me eat better.   I do not tend to overeat on simple foods like fruit and veggies but I find it hard to control my portions when I eat gourmet food just cause I love it.

Fitness Bike safety - equipment question Feb 21 2008
18:30 (UTC)

I guess it depends on the seat but here is what I found on the web about soft seats.

This is from a web site that sells seats.... but I have also read this about gel seats elsewhere .

A rider's "sit bones" (ischial tuberosities) rest on a flat, padded rear surface while the soft tissue between the bones is virtually untouched. That's the genius of Body Geometry. Without pressure on this area (called the perineum) the pudendal artery and nerve that pass through are not compressed. There is no loss of genital blood supply or sensation. Body Geometry doesn't stop there. The full-length, V-shaped Minkow Wedge, reduces pressure even in a low racing position for both men and women. Importantly, Body Geometry's padding will not push up in the center as the sit bones depress the sides.

This is a common problem with "comfort seats" that are padded with thick foam or squishy gel. The material can actually increase numbing pressure on the perineum.

Oh yeah and I second the comment about gloves and Hard seats.... If you ride for any length of time 1+++ hrs .... a softer seat will make your butt numb.

To remember hand signals I think about pointing where I am going....

and personally for stopping I want both hands on my breaks especially if I am going fast.... If you break hard on your front break and not on your back break you could end up flying over your handle bars...... I did this once by getting my front tire stuck in a snow bank.... flew right over the handle bars...luckily into the snow so I didnt get hurt...Watch out for drains and grates and wide cracks in the road...the same thing can happen.  Happy cycling

You have to look at the research and decide for yourself if you want  to put artifical stuff in your body.  While I agree that not everything that is natural is good for you,(I wouldn't eat a cup of apple seeds just because they are "natural")  generally humans and their food sources  have evolved together over millions of years so the closer a population eats to a "native diet" the healthier the population..   Much of the worlds population cannot digest cows milk.... except Europeans....we evolved to process our newest food source... milk.   Over the long run Sucralose may be totally safe but it seems to me that if  the populations who process their food sources the most suffer from the most diseases, then the closer I stick to  a more "natural" diet the less likely I am to contract those diseases.

I agree you probably are not getting enough sleep but you might want to check how much iron are you getting.  Anemia can cause tiredness as well.  Might want to have that checked.  Just from watching myself... seems hard to get the RDA of iron when I cut out red meat... I have to be more aware and eat more iron rich veggies and grains.  Need to watch folic acid and b12 as well.

You have to weight the risks and benefits of using anything artifical.  Personally I try to stay away from anything manufactured.  Do a google search for Dr. Weils comments on sucralose.  I think he  makes alot of sense.  Historically when a new sugar substitute comes out, it seems safe only to find out later it wasn't. Dr Mercola takes a much stronger stance against it... but he comes from more extreme position I think.  IMHO I think I would rather add the 15 calories from sugar rather than risk it.  I have tried stevia... but didn't like it... have you tried it?

Can't remember where I heard that though.  Check out your local natural food store... whole foods sells Cindy's Kitchen brand which is in the refrigerated section of the produce....Its pretty tasty...

Adoption is always an option as well.... There are many childless couples looking for a baby...Many will help with birth and living expenses.   Single motherhood is tough but it is very common these days... there is financial help through social services for those who qualify.  Abortion is a tough choice as well... No easy answers for you here.... but believe in yourself and your ability to make the right choice for yourself.  Take some time to calm down..... Breath.... no one can tell you what choice to make but I think it is always better to make decisions when you are calm and rational and not in a panic... There are many counceling agencies out there on both sides of the issue... Check with Planned parenthood...and if you decide to keep the baby check with your local right to life.... they may be able to help as well.

Good Luck

How about exercising with your baby....  do a search on the web.  Then you can do it anytime without sacrificing any time

Strollercise looks interesting...www.strollercize.com

Mommy and baby fitness looks good too....www.momanbabyfitness.com

and if you can't afford the classes and videos....go walking with the stroller... at the mall or where ever....

BTW Chris Carmichael (Fitness guru to Lance Armstrong) says to eat a small carb breakfast before exercising because you have only about 20% of stored carbs in your liver in the morning... your  muscles don't burn more fat... you body just starves your brain and the quality of your workout suffers because of headaches and lightheadedness... its all about balance... to much you feel bloated ... too little and you run out of brain fuel before your done.

Weight Loss Women... Would you stay with a guy if he wanted you to lose weight? Jan 19 2008

wow judging from the response  this is a really emotional topic..... I have been married for nearly 20 years and significantly overweight (always hovered around 200+- 10lbs)

Do I believe my husband loves me unconditionally.... ABSOLUTELY..... does that mean he would not like me to be thinner... ABSOLUTELY NOT......

Am I going to leave him because he would like me to be thinner.....no way.....

There is nothing wrong with him wanting a thinner me.....

In honesty I want a thinner me...  I want a healthier me... a me that will live a longer more active life...

Frankly I am more attracted to him when I am thinner

Do I think I would be more attractive to him if I were thinner... probably...but he is still here... hasn't cheated (as far as I know)  and I know that he still loves me...

I dont equate his physical desire for me with how much he loves me... I am sure when we are 80 we will not feel the same desire we did when we were 20 but that won't mean he does not love me.

How he treats me does matter that is probably more indicative of his love for me than anything else.

He in no way degrades me or puts me down....If he was doing that,  I think it would be a symptom of a more serious issue not related to the weight...  How healthy is the relationship in all other areas not weight related would be my first question..
