Health & Support Struggling to begin! (Just discovered I ate 3000 calories today!) May 05 2009
20:58 (UTC)

Thanks for all your helpful comments!

Stocking up on good food is definitely a good idea. I've stopped buying anything "bad", though there's always cookies, cakes etc at work! I'm going to get a fruit bowl for my desk and get some oatcakes and things. I do quite well with those. Hopefully if I really need to eat something I can use those as a distraction.

I've done a detox a couple of times in the past which was lots of (homemade) juices, fruits, veggies etc, and I always loved the feeling I had after I got over the initial first day - not tired, not sluggish and not hungry. I think I really need to focus on getting that feeling back without having to go to the extreme of detoxing.

wheredego, I think I definitely need to keep my good sugars in balance, what you're saying sounds so much like what happens to me. Also makes me think of the whole "don't go food shopping when you're hungry" thing.

Thanks for the recipes gi-jane. Will go back on my quest to find vegetarian soy sauce! The mister's not veggie, but that rice dish sounds easy to split up and have half with chicken and half with quorn or tofu. I'll happily cook him the chorizo stew too, he loves chorizo and I think that could be the way to convincing him that brown rice isn't so bad. He is a big chappy (6"2), but the skinniest I know, I think down to height, he just stops eating when he's full unlike me so I usually end up eating more than him (at 5"7). I sometimes wish he'd eat all the things I should be eating when I want to eat them so we'd both be a normal weight! :) Splitting the portions that way actually sounds much more sensible than our "half it" system we have at the moment.

ephinzat I really do need to start logging every little thing, like you, when I do log on a "cheat day" (or cheat weekend in this case) I get the fright of my life! Thanks for your comments :)

baldovin, I just read the "I'm not the fat guy anymore" story and thought it was brilliant! The difference in the photographs is phenominal. Just proves if he can lose his 135 I can totally lose my 35.

Thank you all so much for your support!

Thanks gi-jane. I really appreciate the advice. I'm going to try that, it certainly sounds easier than just jumping in.

I've been making a marked effort with breakfast recently, during the week at least and mixing some bran flakes into yoghurt, with sultanas, almonds and honey. I seem to go downhill as soon as I get to work and I just can't seem to stop myself eating between breakfast and lunch. Looking at what you're saying I'm going to try and take something healthy for a snack. I have myself convinced fruit isn't filling x( but I'll give it a go.

Our meals are always made from scratch by the other half who I'm having trouble convincing that whole grain rice and pasta etc is the way to go. I'll look up some recipes and cook one for him and see if I can convince him...

I would love an app - I found the site to be a bit clunky when trying to use it to log stuff on the phone today. In the least they could do an iphone version like facebook, gmail etc.

Hello there! I live just 30 miles south of London in the Guildford area. Would love to have someone to check in with - never really thought of trying this before.

I'm 21, 5'7 and 166lbs. My metabolism has totally changed and I'm looking to make a healthy lifestyle choice now that I've entered the overweight section of the BMI scale (I know, not massively over the line, but since I'm still gaining I want to nip this in the bud now). I've gained 2 stone in the last 6 months because I just can't stop eating! But y'know, I could be eating healthy things instead etc, getting more exercise to counterbalance that, so my goals consist of daily exercise (alternating cardio and strength training) and sticking to a healthy amount of calories. I guess my weight goal would probably be 140 - 147 lbs, but really I'd just like to be able to fit back into my clothes and tone up!

If you're interested let me know and we can trade email addresses or whatever. If not that's cool too :)

Weight Loss I keep getting heavier! Jan 28 2009
19:13 (UTC)

My metabolism just changed (I'm 21) and I've gone from being able to eat anything and be a healthy weight, to gaining 2 stone in 6 months and being in the "overweight" section of the bmi scale. I'm your height too and wish I was 141!

But I digress, I don't know if you read what everyone has told you, but too much  of a defecit will cause weight gain. They've all explained it much better than I could, and to me it sounds like this (and the metabolism change) could have something to do with it.

Weight Loss Urge to eat when not hungry....does it ever go away? Nov 16 2008

I'm right there with you. One difference I've noticed which gives away whether or not I'm really hungry is what I say to the other half "I'm hungry" means I'm hungry, "I want such and such" means I want to eat. But I digress. I hope it gets easier I really do! I'm going over on my calories at the moment because I *want* to eat, but I'm hoping willpower will eventually curb it. And maybe some distractions. Seems to be much harder at work though. Much harder.

I like that glass of water and gum idea, though. Sounds good. Or there's the other option for going for a bit of fruit, or waiting 15 minutes and if you still want it, have a piece of fruit, wait 15 more minutes, if you still want it... well. Eat it or keep going with the 15 minutes.

Congratulations! I went to put my best jeans on the other day and they don't fit, thus I'm back on calorie count. But kudos! Hopefully I'll be where you are soon!

Weight Loss Eating when stressed... May 13 2008

Original Post by cawilder:

Stress unfortunately is really a fact of life. For a long time I used to meditate and practice mindfulness meditation and it really helped. Yoga helps too. I know it sounds new agey, but honestly I also had horrible anxiety too and it's virtually gone.

I was going to suggest mindfulness. I did an 8 week course in it and it was really helpful. We did meditations and yoga, and each week we had a meditation to do each day and had to pick a task to do "mindfully" (like eating dinner). It was really helpful. There's plenty of stuff online and books around.

I don't have time at the moment though and like you am just eating everything in sight.

smwhipple - I'm guessing you mean for the long cooking part - the recipe calls for baking anyway :) Eggplant is good, never thought of putting them in an enchilada though.

No worries rob :) I appreciate the suggestions!

1oz a day? Heh... I will definitely keep that in mind, I'm sure less cheese would definitely do us both good.

rob I'm vegetarian which is why we went for the cheesy enchiladas. Will have to try with some fake meat although that tends to be quite processed. Not too keen on corn tortillas but thanks for the tip :)

I'll suggest halving it to the other half for next time (he does all the cooking), especially since I feel like I overate just now, though it was worth it. Might take some convincing.

How would the evaporated milk work? I've never used it for anything. Have to look at the mozzarellas, I don't think our big supermarket really has that many.

I guess I'm still getting used to just how calorific cheese is. When I was living at home I had it two meals a day. We used to get through an enourmous amount here too before we discovered there was food other than pizza and pasta with cheese (I'm veggie, he's not) and my metabolism stopped being the teenage eat everything and be ok kind. :)

Thanks for the tips.

I'm going to continue with the sunflower oil until Tuesday, I'll share those pics then, and then try olive oil since I'm not noticing a dramatic change. Skin's a bit softer, and I *know* all my makeup's coming off, but otherwise, dunno. Want to try the olive oil :)

Weight Loss Cheat days/meals and drinking lots of water? Apr 30 2008

Thanks guys, I figured it was something along those lines, I was just curious as to why people were like "I'm going to eat such and such and drink lots of water at the same time". Thanks for the advice too :) I'd never do a cheat day either, I'd just go eat everything.

I'm still sort of breaking out too, but it's starting to calm down now. I figured it was one of those things where it got worse before better and I think it is starting to get better now. I'll have been doing it a week tomorrow.

I hate my chin blackheads with a passion. They really bother me, but hopefully they'll start to go :)

I was using organic natural cleansers up until a while ago when it got too hard to get them here, I switched to Superdrugs tea tree stuff or whatever it is and I'm sure it's done me no good. Two months and skin was exactly the same. I think the natural stuff did better and I always felt better using it.

I did try a few years ago using yoghurt and oats, but didn't last very long since it was such a pain to make and store and wash off. Just curious - where do people keep their mixed up oil?

I have a few of those blackhead strips left (the ones you stick on your nose) which I think I'll just try next week to see if there's a reduction on the err, gross stuff, they yield. :)

Blinx - Where did you get the caster oil from in the end? I tried Boots but couldn't find any.

Can't wait to see the results.

Boots actually :D I had to ask for it in the end, it's behind the counter - I'm guess because of the effects caused by drinking too much or something. The girl said it was £1.26 and I just heard the "26" and panicked for a second :D

With regards to how it's going I don't think I'm managing to steam well enough, so instead of just using the flannel to steam until it's cool, I might for the first steaming use a bowl of hot water with a towel over my head - something I used to do that worked quite well - and then continue in the usual way after that.

I've not compared the photos myself yet, I'm trying to hold off until at least Sunday, then I'll share some :)

Foods Sugar and salt ? Apr 25 2008
13:21 (UTC)

Yeah, that's why I never add any at the table. I've been drinking more this week as that was my next goal. About 2 litres a day. Perhaps it's hormones or something else.

That echoes things I've found. I guess the 70g days are the bad ones then (there's been more than one this week) :S Will definitely have to watch that.

Thanks for the reply :)

Weight Loss Confused - advice appreciated: how much should I be eating? Apr 24 2008
15:08 (UTC)

Thanks for replying :)

The trouble I'm having at the minute is making it up with healthy foods and not the more appealing chocolaty snacks :D but I am keeping to between 1300 and 1500 (so not 100% restricting to 1300). I am noticing a lot of fluid weight but I'm thinking that's due to what I'm eating as snacks (the meals I have are pretty healthy). I will definitely be endeavouring to change over the foods I eat, taking it one day at a time :)

To be honest about four days out of the week I do get a 20-30 min walk but other than that I mostly sit in mine or my boyfriend's room on my laptop or reading - we're both web design students ;)

Thanks for the informative and helpful post - it's really helped clear things up :)

I've been doing this for two nights now and taking photographs - I must admit the before pictures are somewhat depressing since my camera lets you see so close!

Anyway I'm not sure if I'm noticing a difference in the spots or blackheads yet (although I'm fairly certain something's going on) but I must admit that oil is amazing at getting makeup off! I was wearing a significant amount of liquid eyeliner and it got it off no problem! My usual cleanser would only get so much of the mascara off and I'd still go to bed with slight dark smudges under my eyes no matter what I did - but not anymore! So I imagine this is definitely doing something for the other dirt on my skin too.

I'll share the pictures next week and post about them then.

I'm just using castor oil and sunflower oil in the balanced skin percentages.

I intend to try this and photograph daily to watch the changes. I couldn't get any castor oil at the supermarket today but I will definitely look for some tomorrow in the health food shop. I'm going to try with sunflower oil and caster oil to begin with as it says on those links. I'm also trying to get into the habit of drinking more water at the minute so hopefully combined I'll see some changes. If the photographs turn out well I'm not against sharing them. :) Probably just a week by week showing though, I'm not expecting miraculous changes daily - though I could be surprised!

I must admit my boyfriend was a little surprised at the supermarket today and was very much "surely putting oil on your skin is going to cause to to be oily and give you more spots", I tried to explain and then gave up since I'm in a ratty mood today ;)

I also have the issue of hogging the one bathroom between four of us, but... never mind! I only have two washcloths too and no idea what Dawn dish detergent is - I'm in the UK. I'll have to hunt out an equivalent.

Weight Loss Quitting Sugar Cold Turkey? Apr 02 2008

About two years ago, I woke up one morning and just decided I didn't eat chocolate any more. I was probably the most contented I'd ever been, therefore comfort eating wasn't much of an issue and while it did in some instances get replaced by caramel and cherries, I didn't eat any chocolate for 8 whole months. Then I went to the South of France and decided to treat myself. In those 8 months I lost about a stone (14lbs)

I'm not sure how I managed that to be honest. It was like I didn't even miss it. I was pretty busy. Commuting two hours a day, working weekends, but not stressed I guess. Whereas now, I can't even think about giving up chocolate. I'm dying for some nutella on toast right now but can't cause I used up my calories for today :S I think it's also harder for me now, having an other half who can eat anything. Chocolate is a hard one to kick, it really is. But if you can do it, don't give up. You will get to a point where you can just take it or leave it and then it's ok, if you know you won't go back into chocolate binges and whatnot. Apparently my resolve weaked once I'd had some on holiday. I'm not sure how I got back to being worse than I was before...

Good luck and I hope you do manage it :) Try chocolate that's 70% cocoa if you can't just give it up, because at least that's a bit better for you. Or some of the vegan chocolate.
