Pregnancy & Parenting Out of Wedlock! May 19 2008

My children's father and I aren't married.  We have a house, cars, and three kids (two of them planned ;)).  We had been dating less than a year when I got pregnant so while we agreed were would be parents together we felt like preparing for the birth of our child was a lot more important than planning a wedding.  After our oldest was born we discussed it a lot but our relationship is a commitment to each other and our kids that transcends being legally married. We joke a lot now that when they finally legalize civil unions (for same-sex couples) we will get a civil union instead.  Either that or we'll get married when Brad and Angelina do! lol

Pregnancy & Parenting To breastfeed or to NOT breastfeed. That is my ? May 15 2008

I'll be the unpopular one and say: Do what feels right for you.  There a lot of benefits to breastfeeding but sometimes it doesnt work out the way you hope it will.  Don't let anyone guilt trip you into being miserable or feeling like a failure if you choose not to breast feed.  Your baby can be equally as fussy on breastmilk as formula.  Your breastfed baby can still get food allergies and ear infections.  It is not a magic formula for success.  You need to do whats right for both of you physically and mentally. A happy formula feeding mom is better for her baby than a miserable breastfeeding mom.

Pregnancy & Parenting Fetal Movement Question Apr 29 2008

She is runing out of room!  Movements will definately feel different in the 3rd trimester because her space is getting cramped.  Also if she turns so her back is out you will miss a lot of her movements because they'll be on the "inside" if that makes sense.  If you are worried or you notice a significant change you should drink something highly sugary like non-diet soda or juice and lie down on your left side and count how many movements of any kind you feel in 1 hour.  If its less than 10, call your doctor just to get checked.

I wouldn't form your opinion based on store-bought hummus.  Store-bought hummus is gross.  Just make it yourself: Homemade Hummus, much better texture and flavor!

Ok great! Still a little confused on calorie surplus vs. calorie deficit though. I am about 2lbs from my goal so I don't really care about losing more weight, but I would like to lose fat and build muscle. I am definately a perfect example of "skinny fat."

Pregnancy & Parenting My 22 month old refuses to eat Apr 12 2008

The problem is that now that he drinks the pediasure he really has no reason to eat food.  The pediasure probably gives him enough of a comfortably full feeling that he can hold out even longer.  I would ask your doctor about switching to a chewable vitamin instead.  Then when he starts asking for milk offer him food instead with water to drink if he is really thirsty.

Two year olds are going to eat what they want when they want just keep serving him healthy balanced meals and eventually he'll eat a few bites here and there.  Sorry there really isnt any good advice.  You can try making things more fun like dipping, making silly faces, letting him choose things at the store and help prepare them but really it comes down to: he'll eat what he wants when he wants and if you try too hard you'll make you both crazy.

The way my job does it is they only reveal how many pounds you lost and the %, not the actual weight numbers.  Everyone weighs in private with an objective employee from Employee Health so no one knows what your actual weight is.  I guess someone could technically do the math and figure it out but they would have to be pretty determined.

Pregnancy & Parenting grapefruit, ok while breastfeeding Apr 02 2008

That sounds a little suspect.  It isn't like the baby is actually eating grapefruit via your breastmilk.  There is no increase in fiber for the baby the way there is for the mother.  If the baby was having trouble digesting the proteins they might be more fussy and gassy but not sure just an increase in BMs.  Let us know if it improves after cutting out the citrus, curious!

I though it might be helpful to list the things I can't live without:

My baby sling.  I love it, it is easily portable, it always fits, its super comfy for both of us, and I look cool and get lots of comments and questions about it.

A cradle swing.  These things are awesome.  Babies go instantly to sleep in them.  All of my babies who couldn't stand bouncy chairs, vibrating chairs, or traditional swings LOVED the cradle swing.

Recieving blankets.  Get as many as you can.  They are invaluable for swaddling newborns, as a burp cloth or cleaning up spit up, acting as a barrier between babies and people's germy clothes, floors, sofas, etc..., use as a changing pad, they are soft and warm.

A glider.   I like them better than a rocker because they are more stable and take less effort, and are more comfortable.  Trust me, if you have a fussy baby you'll spend hours in it especially at night.  You might even sleep in it a few times.

White noise.  These come in all types from systems that clip to the crib rail, to teddy bears that have heartbeats.  These always helped my babies transition from the nosy house to the quiet of their cribs.

Zippers.  Get clothes, suits, and pajamas with zippers whenever possible.  You would never think what a pain all those tiny snaps are in the dark, with a screaming baby, and you're sleep deprived.

That's all for now, hopefully the others will chime in. :)

Talk to your doctor about your concerns and ask how many calories you should be eating.  For an idea, try nutritiondata.com, and indicate pregnancy and it will tell you about what you need calorie-wise in each trimester.

Just chiming in with my 2 cents, feel free the PM me if you have more questions. :) My youngest is now 10 weeks old so these things are active in my mind right now!

Original Post by vanessa1031:

Hi everyone!  Many thanks and appreciation on the following clarification questions:  (I'm due July 2008 and registered this weekend, now having SO many questions!)

1.  Bottle warmer:  I don't want to use the microwave.  I registered for a bottle warmer.  Are these effective; or should I go conventional stove warming?

The bottle warmer is way faster and uses less water than the hot mug trick but either one will work.  We went without one for a long time without any trouble and then got one and thought it was much more convenient.  We bottle feed breastmilk so it separates in the fridge and the bottle warmer gets it nice and warm so it blends back.

2.  Pamper's Swaddlers:  What are those?  Regular diapers?  I scanned newborn regular diapers that has a space cut out for the umbilical cord site to heal.  That I know.  I just don't understand what swaddlers are as compared to regular diapers.

Swaddlers are just regular diapers.  That being said they are the only diapers I have used through 3 babies that don't blow out poop the back and legs.  Although if you get 1 size up most brands should be ok.  FYI you don't need the newborn cut out, just fold the front of the diaper down so it rest under their belly button.  Most of the time the cut out doesn't fit the baby exactly and you have to fold it anyway.  Don't buy too many newborn and size 1 diapers, you'll be shocked at how quickly they grow in those first few weeks!!

3.  I registered for a bassinet, Pack -n- Play and a play-yard/playpen.  Do I need all these?  I like the play-pen.....my mom suggested I get one becuase they can play in there safely while I make dinner, work, excercise; etc.

I am not sure what the difference is between the ones you registered for but what you want to get is one of the new ones that is a playpen with a bassinet insert and a changing table.  We have one in the living room so the baby can sleep, play, and be changed without having to go upstairs to her bedroom.  Also it is great for travel because you have all the equipment you could need.

4.  How  many sheets do I need for the crib, and pack-n-play, and bassinet??

Get about 4 sheets for the crib and multiples of those waterproof fabic pads. There will be nights the baby will spit up every time you lay her down and you want to be able to change what's under her quickly (and with one hand).  I don't use sheets in my pack n play, just one of those fabric mats.

5.  Baby sling vs. Bjorn body carrier?  What's more comfy and safe for baby?  I like the look of the sling, but the acutal front carrier from bjorn with all the straps look safer, but way uncomfortable.

I have always used a baby sling but the kind you get will make a huge difference as to how comfortable it is.  It has taken me 3 kids to find the perfect one.  I use it because it is easy to stuff in my purse, it covers the baby completely so I don't have to worry about cold, germs, etc..., and I also find it fashionable and comfortable.  That said I have also used the baby Bjorn and for bigger babies it is fine.  Not quite as portable as my sling and the baby is much more exposed, but comfortable for the wearer.

6.  How fast do they grow out of onesies?  It's looking like this little one is going to be a big baby-  how long do newborns stay in onseies made for 0-3 months?

Onesies are really stretchy, so they usually last long past their weight limit.  However depending on the size of your baby that doesn't necessarily correspond to the month/age.  Although for baby clothes and diapers I would focus on the 3-6 month sizes.  The first 3 months the baby gows so fast you'll be growing out of clothes and diapers right and left.

7.  Baby Powder for bottoms:  Do people use baby powder on little bottoms or now is it always a diaper rash cream?  Is Triple Paste Ointment that great?  I've heard good things about it-  but not sure.

I also never used baby powder although I have bought several bottles of the cornstarch only kind with the intention of using it.  We also have always used Desitin (the original formula, not the creamy it rubs off too easily).  The best way to take care of their butts is to not use baby wipes too often.

Just tell people you are carrying the baby as a surrogate for a family in Indiana and therefore don't feel attached. Wink That would shut me up, if anything I'd think it was admirable.

Kashi TLC bars. I personally hate them (I don't really care for nuts, and I find the cherry taste in the Cherry Dark Chocolate variety is too strong), but most people seem to like them.

I second the Kashi TLC bars, I love them all except the chocolate one (too sweet).  I especially like the trail mix and peanut ones.  Even my kids like them and they are a pretty filling/lasting low calorie snack with good nutritionals and ingredients.

LOL  I have the same problem, I have lost about 40 pounds in 2 months from my weight on the day of delivery.  I now weigh less than I did before my second pregnancy (this was #4!) and I am thrilled.  But I look like an old lady from my saggy, shapeless pancake butt to my bat wing arms to my shriveled saggy belly.  To top it off are my 34H breasts which wind up giving the effect not of a porn star (hey I'd go for that) but that I am still overweight!  For some reason I lost all muscle tone during my pregnancy, probably from not exercising although I felt pretty active.  What I've decided is this:  I am going to continue losing weight as long as it is easily coming off and once I "plateau" I will head over to the gym to start toning up and building muscle.  Then if my weight fluctuates I won't be as upset because I'll already be at my goal.  FYI I know I won't feel normal until I am done breastfeeding and my boobs shrivel up into tiny lifeless rags.  That's just how it works for me.  Then I can stuff them into a nice push-up bra and go about my normal life again.  :)

I really don't know what to tell you.  Is it possible you've been too consistent?  Maybe your body has adjusted to your routine too well and you need to change it up.  I have heard people suggest this before, even Bob on biggest loser said last night that they encourage "cheat" days to shock the metabolism.  I have also heard people suggest switching up your exercise routine for the same reason.  I am not sure what else to suggest, you seem to be eating enough, although I know if I added that much exercise to my normal routine I would need more calories than that but I dont know how active the rest of your day is.  Good Luck!
Foods I Need Kid Friendly Meal Options Mar 12 2008

With kids eating healthy is really a habit, not a matter of hiding healthy things or dressing up healthy things to make them more attractive.  If you serve lean meat, healthy starch, and two steamed veggies every night and don't make a big deal about it even tually they start to expect it and they'll eat it.  ANd expect to throw a lot of food away for awhile.  For example, grilled chicken, rice pilaf, steamed broccoli and mini corn on the cob. My kids would eat most of that meal because we have it often and they are familiar with those foods.  If I want something different like bacon wrapped scallops I serve bacon wrapped scallops, rice pilaf, steamed broccoli and aparagus tips.  If they don't eat the scallops or the asparagus they can have all the broccoli and rice they want.  We serve everbody the same plate and don't care if they eat some, all or none.  However there is no more food after dinner.  We save the kids' plates and will happily heat up them back up if they try getting out of it by wanting a bedtime snack.  Also only water to drink before and during dinner so they dont fill up on milk.  The key to this approach is to always offer enough options that there is something everyone will eat.  My aunt, to this day, still serves cottage cheese and applesauce with every meal because kids will generally eat it if they dont like anything else on the table.
