I'm actually currently reading the book and I plan on reading it page per page before I get to the workouts. I've learned SO MUCH about reading this book (i'm seriously addicted to it) and i've also put some myths I've heard to rest.

the book says "lift like a man, look like a goddess" and as cheesy as that sounds, I believe it will really work. The author backs up all of his statements by research and he has a really good sense of humor.

I definitley recommend this book to anyone who's interested in putting down the "pink barbie weights" (as he calls them), and focusing on lifting (not endurance) exercises.

before i go to a party, i chew a piece of minty gum and i promise myself i will not take it out of my mouth the entire night (no food tastes good when mixed with minty gum).

With the parents, I would just be polite about it and either tell them that I am watching what i eat or I would take some on my plate and spread around the food to make it look like i ate the non-healthy stuff. Also, if you are talking a lot during the meal, they'll hardly realize that you're not putting the fork to your mouth.

Fitness going from womens gym to co-ed Jan 27 2008

i've belonged to two different gyms in the past 3 years. My first gym also was a specific crowd of people (mostly 60-70 year olds) and i was 14 at the time. I loved it but i had to switch because it got too expensive.

My new gym is a MUCH younger crowd and i was sooo nervous about going (i'm 17 now). When i went there, i was really self-consious for the first ten minutes and afterwards i realized that no one is looking at me (just like i wouldnt look at anyone else). Also, there were all types of people there... some were really athletic, some were a little overweight and some in between. I like it so much better and it didnt take long at all to get used to it.

I guess what i'm trying to say is that you'll be fine. The first time you go you will be nervous (its okay, that's normal), but after that you'll realize that its really not that big of a deal. I know its something you've heard before, but its one of those things that you have to see for yourself. Good luck and have fun!!!

Yeah I figured all I had to focus on was balancing cardio with strength training... I think that reading these articles psyched me out and confused me. I made it more complicated than it had to be. Thanks for posting!

thanks for the feed back! You all have excellent points! I feel like i'm understanding it more... i need to remember that muscle takes up less space than fat for the same poundage and that the 'britney spears syndrome' that the second article talked about was discussing a woman who was maturing and not going to stay a 16 year old forever. thanks for the website too! :)

Young Calorie Counters I'm jealous of people who don't get hungry... Jan 27 2008

I can completely relate!

Whenever I eat a meal, I can keep eating and not stop. I feel myself filling up, but I can always manage to fit more down. When I was younger, I had to train myself to stop anyway, even though I could get more down. My mom used to think it was because I ate too fast and I wasn't giving myself enough time to digest, I knew that wasn't right because an hour later I could probably eat the same amount again. I just tell myself to stop and I walk away. Sometimes I'll pour water onto my food so I won't eat it.

The feeling never goes away for me. For example, tonight during dinner I had soup, salad and 24 pieces of sushi (I still could have eaten a green apple afterward if I wanted to). I figure since I'm eating healthy food, and I'm not overweight (I'm 5'7'' and 140 lbs and i have muscle), its nothing for me to really worry about if i do it occasionally.

Just promise yourself to stop and you'll listen. Remember that you can always have left overs and its not the last meal you'll ever have. Hope this helps :)

Fitness what exactly IS strength training? Jan 27 2008
00:42 (UTC)

strength training is anything that helps you build muscle. Examples would be anything from weight lifting, yoga/pilates, etc...

Strength training usually doesn't increase your heart rate (that's what cardio exercise does) but it instead focuses more on your muscles. Based on what you've posted, it seems like you get a lot of cardio which is great, but i would try to add more strength training exercises. Try 30 minutes a day, 5-6 times a week, but only focus on ONE muscle group each time (ex: monday is arms, tuesday legs, wednesday back, etc...)

sounds like a great book!!

My friend that i'm currently working out with is convinced that if she lifts like a man, she will look like a man. Its annoying because no matter what i tell her, she is so convinced that she's right, she wont listen. Hopefully after reading this book, i'll be able to explain everything to her with backed up research.

thanks for posting this!

Fitness sound off on protein shakes! Jan 24 2008
18:44 (UTC)

I've recently gone to whole foods and got the whole food's brand "soy protein powder." Its 90 calories for a scoop and each scoop has 24 grams of protein. It sounded great but the only thing is when I tried to make a shake, the shake tasted way too powdery. I only used a half a scope and I kept adding more ingredients to get rid of the powdery taste but no matter what i did, it was still there.

I'm hoping that i'll find a protein powder that won't taste like actual powder. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

jprt325- I dont have an answer as to why that happens, but it has happened to me before. When i went on a hiking trip in Yellostone national park, i took a nalgene bottle (100mL plastic bottle) and filled it with water. I then added lemonade-tasting powder. To this day (three years later), after several washes, my bottle still smells and whenever i try to drink water out of it, i can taste the lemonade. I feel like plastic somehow absorbs flavors into it that can't be washed out.

Fitness Attention Winsor Pilates Users...(Question) Jan 17 2008

I used windsor pilates when i was in seventh grade (i'm a senior in high school now) and I had great results. I lost about 25 pounds by doing pilates (every other day) and I was also on weight watchers. I believe it took me 6-7 months to loose the weight and i was nicely sculpted from the program. I didn't do any cardio or any other exercise which probably would have sped up my results a little more.

I don't know if my weight lost was strictly from pilates and dieting or if it was also because I was maturing (i was 12 at the time). Whatever the reason for my weight loss, i HIGHLY recommend windsor pilates because it made me feel strong and flexible.

 Enjoy it and good luck!

Health & Support Depression and Anxiety Nov 16 2007

Wow, here I thought I was alone...Recently, I too was diagnosed with depression and anxiety (about a month ago). Before that, I refused to see a shrink because I've never had success with one in the past. I’ve always viewed shrinks as people who pretend to care about your problems, but in reality, they don't (I don't want to offend anyone on this site who might be a psychologist; it's just what I once thought).

Finally, after my grades began slipping, I lost my desire to socialize and I began to sleeping for 22 hours a day (and also my parents nagging me), I finally decided to see a shrink. There, my psychologist sent me to a psychiatrist where I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety and acute obsessive compulsive disorder. I can't say that I was ever suicidal, but I would have thoughts about someone I loved dying (or even myself dying) and I couldn’t do anything to save anyone. These thoughts would really upset me to the point where I could burst into tears. I also had issues dwelling on the past. For instance, if I had a fight with a friend 2 years ago, it could still make me cry and I would constantly think about how I could have handled it differently (like what I should have done). When my psychiatrist recommended Prozac I, too, was against the medicine because I've always been someone who liked to know that I was in control of my emotions. The thought that a stupid miracle pill could help didn't seem realistic. I finally decided to take the medicine because I was tired of being miserable.

I'm not going to lie to you; Prozac was a horrible experience for me. It made me feel very anxious and over stimulated. HOWEVER, I was then started on Zoloft which I am currently still taking. As bizarre as it may sound, I actually am feeling better. I'm still not 100% like I used to be but the medication gave me 2 days where I was back to my normal self. That may not seem like a lot, but it gave me hope that I can get back to that permanently. I've only been on the medication for 3 weeks and they said it will take 4 before I feel 100% better. I still can't comprehend how one day, I'm going to wake up and be my old self, but that's what they told me it would be like. A part of me still doesn't believe that these drugs work... that part of me thinks that I want them to work so badly that I convince myself that I am getting better. Even if that is the case, I'm just fine with that.

As for seeing a shrink, I still don't like it but I know that it does help. I'm hoping that once the medication kicks into full effect, my views on a shrink will change. It is good to just let everything out once in a while to someone who isn't biased.

Based on my experience, I would recommend trying a medication. If it doesn’t work, you can always stop taking it, but it’s worth a shot if it means getting better. Keep in mind that the first medication might not be the right one for you. You might need to try a couple… but trust me, when you get those 2 days when you’re back to your old self- you’ll feel incredible.

I doubt anyone is going to read my entire post (its sooo long), but I found that typing this out was very therapeutic to me. Thanks for posting this thread! I wish you all the luck in the world! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. You and I are in the same process, I'm just a few weeks ahead. So, if you need someone to relate to, ask advice, or even complain to... I'm you’re girl.

Thank you all so much for signing the petition. It really means a lot to me! I don't know what it is, but whenever I read or hear about someone harming animals, it really upsets me. I guess that maybe it's because I feel like they're so helpless. Once again, thank you all!

About four years ago, I was baking for the holidays and decided to make low-fat sugar cookies my way- BIG MISTAKE! I bought pre-packaged sugar cookie mix, replaced the eggs with only egg whites, and replaced ALL the oil with applesauce (apparently you're only supposed to place half of the oil with applesauce). When I took the cookies out of the oven, the outside of the cookies had a hard, bland shell. The inside was a burnt applesauce omelete (the eggs burnt and actually turned black and the applesauce tasted disgusting!)...

Now, I just stick to the regular recipe and only eat one cookie...
Fitness does Pilates help with acheiving a smaller waist? Sep 03 2007

When I did Pilates, I did it on a pretty regular basis and I was also on Weight Watchers at the time. My waist did shrink from the combination. Personally, I feel like you need both Pilates and a diet in order to achieve a smaller waist. The only issue is, I did lose weight which is something I know you're trying to avoid because you're already under weight. Maybe your best bet is to lose a little bit of weight by doing the combination and then lift weights or something so you can gain weight by increasing your muscle mass.
Fitness running shoe Q Sep 03 2007
03:56 (UTC)

With shoes it's hard to tell... it really depends on how often you wear them. Shoes don't deteriorate with age, instead they deteriorate based on the amount of miles you wear them for and the intensity of your workouts (running/hiking versus a casual stride). The average running shoe lasts between 300-500 miles. That may seem a lot, but if you are wearing these shoes to the gym, to shop and to work/school, the miles can really add up. If you do some calculating based on how often you wear them and the shoes' life doesn't add up to 300-500 miles, then you should defiantly take them back to the store where you got them from. If you got the shoes from a department store, I know they're usually pretty lenient when it comes to returning shoes for that kind of reason.

Good luck with your shoes! Hope this helped

I HIGHLY recommend windsor pilates. I used to do it religiously and I got very toned from it. The workouts are not extremely long like some other videos. Windsor Pilates videos are usually 20 minutes long. Mari Windsor has several pilates workouts that target different areas of your body and she even has workouts for the whole body. You're guaranteed to see results in less than 3 weeks.

Check out www.windsorpilates.com for more information.

Height: 5'7''

Age: 16

Weight: 135

Goal Weight: 115 + 5-10 lbs muscle

I'm happy with my current weight, but I do want more of my muscle to show. I have muscle, but you can't really see it in my arms or stomach. I want to loose some weight in those areas and tone up a little bit more. I'm not looking to be super skinny, I just want to look healthy, lean and tone. I plan on loosing about 20 pounds of fat, and then gaining between 5-10 pounds of muscle. Of course this will take a while, but I believe I can do it if I set my mind to it.

I know exactly where your comming from because I'm currently in that situation myself...

Though I'm not exactly taking my own advice right now (even though I should), I'll tell you what I did after Thanksgiving which helped a great deal:

stop cold turkey- right now. Don't tell yourself, "ohhh well tomorrow I'll get back on track". Even though tomorrow doesn't seem that far away, it still gives you enough time to convince yourself otherwise. Right this second, promise yourself that you will stay on track and remind yourself why it is important to you and think of your goals. Also remind yourself how good fresh fruit and veggies can taste, and since you are in a hotel, try going to the gym. Though it might seem like a drag to go there, once you start, you'll feel so much better and you won't want to stop...

I hope that helps... it might not work for everyone but it always seemed to help me.
