Health & Support A Helpful Harmful Habit??? May 15 2008

At school, I do try to carry fruit leather, protein bars and such in my bag. (I am vegetarian, btw) Lots of the time though, I have classes straight through (ie 9-10, 10-1130, lunch, 1-2) then I also walk to school and back (5 mi. round trip) and by the time I get home, I have just enough time to eat another 250-350 and go to work, and often I don't get home from work until 10/1030, and my shifts usually are 5.5 hrs, which means I don't get a 30 min. meal break.

So yeah, the "after 8 o'clock" eating is post-dinner, or kind of "half-dinner" on days when I have to eat before then after a shift that's 4:30-10 or something like that.

Mostly what I eat at night is cereal w/ fruit and soymilk, tofu stripssoy cheese (for protein), or fruit w/ cottage cheese and yogurt.  Sometimes random leftovers that are in the fridge.

Basically, after lunch I've usually had around 600, then I eat a bit more before work, then eat a ton late at night.  I don't know how unhealthy that is, or how to change it at this point, because even though I know I should have a big breakfast, the amount of eating I do late leaves me still feeling full and a bit bloated in the morning, and I can't really afford to not eat at night in order to be hungry in the morning.
Plus, like I said, I haven't been getting adequate sleep because of it, and I've heard that's detrimental to weight gain.  True?

Also, I should note that I'm highly active, walking at least 5 mi. per day then usually running another 3-6 in the evening, with weights every other day.  I know it makes it harder to gain, but I end up eating more when I get exercise, and it keeps me from being cranky.  haha.

What's really amazing is making a packet of instant Maple Brown Sugar oatmeal with coffee instead of water...

Oooh man. So good!

And to make it even better, stir in a tsp of unsweetened cocoa. It's only 7ish calories.

Whenever I want a filling, low calorie snack (an indulgence I don't get to have often seeing as I'm gaining) I have a packet of Reduced Sugar MBS Oatmeal (120) + coffee + cocoa (10) + .5 tsp of instant coffee.

Wow! Thanks everyone for all your responses!

I guess the consensus is basically: just let your body figure out where it's most comfortable...?? I'm at 100-101 right now, and don't have my period back yet, so I know this is enough.. I guess I'll have to wait and see where that comes back, and that should give me a pretty good idea, right?

I wish I had a good way for measuring my body fat percentage.. what is the most accurate way to do it at home without having to buy equipment for it? Does plugging measurements into a calculator work fairly well?

I'm recovering from an ED, yes. Pre-ED I weighed 125-130 but could definitely have used a 5-10 lb. weight loss.

I'm not asking for unhealthy foods... That's not something you have to ask about. Duh. Ice cream, cake, brownies etc. are not favorites of mine. I have a non-existant sweet-tooth.

What I'm asking for is yummy entrees and/or snacks, not desserts. Preferrably low-fat and healthy, but it's okay to relax once in a while.

While I appreciate your obvious concern, butterfly, there's no need to worry about my arteries. I can assure you I keep them in quite good order.

As far as favorite foods go... hmmm

I like basically everything - not a picky eater at all. I try to eat mostly vegetarian.. I love morningstar sausage and bacon. Some other of my favorites foods are eggs, smoked salmon, indian food, oatmeal, cereal, pita bread, spinach, anything cinnamon or garlic, soymilk (allergic to regular milk and cream cheese), watermelon, and strawberries. Not as big of a fan of most cheeses, nuts, and smoothies.

Do you think it definitely should be, or is 110 okay? Because if it's alright health-wise to stick there, I probably will. I do want to be thin - just thin in a healthy way.

I DID IT!

I ran the 5K this morning (3.175 miles total)! And I did it in 30 minutes! I'm so incredibly stoked...

I've only been running for 12 days, and I started out not being able to do 0.5 miles without stopping to walk because of breathlessness or sidestitches. In less than 2 weeks, I'm runnning a 5K and I could have kept going...

Running rocks!

(oh, and the shin splints go away quickly if you keep at it, for those of you that got them when you first started running)

Hey, can I join???

I get up every morning at 6:30 and jog for 20 minutes, then power walk for 5. Every other day I lift weights for 15 minutes after my walk.

I've gone from only being able to jog .6 miles before having to stop and walk, to jogging 2.1 miles non-stop this morning in 9 days! wooo!

Hey Daisy, just wanted to tell you that it's all true - and I didn't believe it either. Everything about starvation mode and how your metabolism will go haywire once you start eating the right amount again is true.

I'm recovering from anorexia, eat 2500-3000 calories per day, and I lost weight this week. It's incredibly difficult to force yourself to do, I know, but you'll feel so much better once you do!

I drink a glass of V-8 or v-8 Fusion with breakfast.

v-8 = 50 cals/cup and 2 servings of veggies v-8 fusion light = 50 cals/cup, 1 serving fruit, 1 serving veggies.

I like Hot and Spicy V-8, personally, but if you don't like the v-8 taste, go for the Fusion - you can't even taste the vegetables at all. Tastes just like fruit juice.

Hey everyone - just thought I'd drop a line and tell you how I'm doing.

I had to go to the hospital for 14 days, but I'm back home now. I started off eating 2800 calories a day since getting home, and lost weight between Friday and today, so now I'm at 3200. Crazy, huh? I wouldn't believe it myself unless I was seeing it with my own eyes....

I'm 5'7" and weighed 93.2 this morning... still a long ways to go!

for those of you stuck in your ED - it's not worth ending up in the hospital. I'm serious. It's the most horrible experience... But necessary. The first night I was there, my heart rate dipped to 29 beats per minute. Freaky.

I'm here for anyone who wants to talk: radbird191@comcast.net

Hey everyone -

I thought I'd write and update everybody on what's going on in my life.  I'm at my dad's office right now with nothing but time, so it might be a bit lengthy.  Skim it or skip it if you'd like, I suppose.

sandy - thanks for your suggestions and support.  I really appreciate it, and I'd appreciate any prayers as well.

froggie - I haven't had another glass of milk since then, but I guess at least I did it, right?  THanks for your encouragement.  I don't know what I'd do without you guys here all backing me up.

Right now I'm at 84.9 pounds and have been that for three days in a row.  When I came home from work last Friday night, exhausted and really to relax and sleep, I was greeted by two very hysterical, angry/crying parents who greeted me by saying I was "dying" and they were going to make me eat 2500 calories a DAY.  This out of left field really... I mean, I knew they were concerned, but I had no warning something like this was coming.  Thankfully, as the night wore on, they settled down a little bit and agreed not to force me to eat 2500 a day, although they are being annoyingly close observers/commenters on everything I put in my mouth.

It's not that I want to lose anymore weight.  I don't.  But the last 4 days, I'd only eaten my normal amount of food - namely 500-800 calories - and have maintained my weight, which makes me think that if I eat what they'd like me to eat (1500-2000) I'll expand like a balloon!  Is that true?  Doesn't it make sense?  I don't know, I'm just so scared, you know?

8 lbs to my laptop.  Don't get me wrong, I do want to get it, but I just would like to do it gradually, and without feeling bloated and ill.  Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of meal bars, smoothies, etc. and I still can't get myself to eat peanut butter, nuts, butter, ice cream, milk, juice, etc.  I don't know what I'd do if my weight started jumping up .5 pound a day or something, or even more than .1-.2 pounds a day.

Contrastingly, I know that I have to weigh 100 pounds (or close to it) by mid August, or I don't get to go to college.  15 pounds... I try to tell myself at meals times, "15 pounds... that's 52500 calories.  This won't kill you.  It won't, it won't, it won't."

It sounds like it should make it easier to eat, right?

but it doesn't.

My dad is making me log my weight into this computer spreadsheet every Sunday and Wednesday.  They've hinted that they might try to force me to see a nutritionist or dietician or something if it doesn't start climbing...

I don't know what to do!  I feel like such a walking civil war... It's like there's two people inside of me - ED Robin and Rational Robin, and they CONSTANTLY are fighting.

Could anyone who is recovering/has recovered from anorexia tell me how many calories they ate per day and how fast they gained weight?  Maybe even what they would eat on a typical day?  Any information would be extremely appreciated...

love to all of you,

robin

Thanks for your prayers... I'm doing a little bit better, although still not eating anough to maintain.  I'm at around 85.5 lbs now, even though I've been eating more and even eating some "restricted" foods.  Like last night I had a glass of milk for the first time since last August probably... haha.  At the same time, as I eat more, I get more active, and I think my metabolism might be speeding up as well.

This morning I weighed 84.4 (!) but I think it will jump back up, since I was 85.8 the day before.  Must've been a fluke thing.  But I just found out my BMI is the same as that one Brazilian model who died, so that freaked me out...  I have a long ways to go before that IMac.  :sigh:

You guys are so great... I love you guys.

Unfortunately, this recovery isn't going well.  I've been eating more and everything, but my weight keep dropping!  In fact, I think it might be dropping faster than it had been... I weighed 85.8 pounds this morning!

I know I have to get through this, but I'm struggling so much to hold onto my faith.  God seems so distant when my thoughts are obsessed with ED crap.
