Oh my gosh!  Hi and thank you for your response!  You are the only person who responded.  I too, have a birthday in June.  Mine is the 17th.  I am 46 years old, 5'4" and want to lose 60+ pounds.  I was at 191.2 two days ago but now I am at 194.  I am not sure why my weight went up but one thing I know for sure ... it is not from lack of exercise or counting calories because I have been disciplined in both areas.  I have been very good this year!  he he he Okay, I know it has only been a week into the new year but it is a good start.  I really, really, really, want to take it all the way until June.

I think we should check in no less than once a week.  As for the weigh-in day, you go ahead and pick the day.  I am open to whichever day you choose.  As we keep the thead going others may join but we'll still stick with that day.

My idea of this thread is to keep it simple.  We have a timeline, which is June, and we should use the thread as accountability and support.  Some personal challenges, suggestions, advice, and just to vent would be great as well.  Exercise hours per week and body measurements would be a good thing to add as we get going.

So what do you think?

BTW ... My name is Karen.

I have really done a good job of eliminating the salt to flavor my food so I have become quite creative with seasoning.  Look for season mixes without salt.  Try different mixes until you find a few that you enjoy.  Use a few different flavors to mix it up a bit.  Also try to cook your chicken on the grill for flavor or in a frying pan with a little virgin olive oil.  One of my favorite ways to flavor chicken after it is cooked is to use lemon juice w/ paprika and/or chili powder.

My son and I love to eat sunflower seeds on a long trip.   It is a lot of work for a little seed but we love them.  We save a couple of tin cans wash them out and use them for the shells.  Frito lay sells flavored seeds.  We especially like the hot ones.

Foods Too much sodium, how do I stop?!!???!!? Dec 12 2008

What helped me to reduce my sodium intake was to eat less and less processed food.  As Jack LaLanne says, "If man made it, don't eat it."  Try and make more fresh foods so that you know exactly what is in it.  Use mixed spices without salt to season your food. Eventually you won't even crave the processed foods or the salt as much.

I love my elliptical!  It works amazingly for losing inches on your thighs and lifting your bottom. I also see definition in my arms and shoulders from using the handles. It's weird when other people notice as well. It burns a great deal of calories! It's fun to use because you can always try to beat your time, etc.  I am in the US - California. I purchased a NordicTrack @ Costco. It was heavy and took some time to move and put together. When you first start using it you might feel a little pain around your knees but it is just muscle soreness not pressure on on knees. It goes away in 2-3 days.

Oops ... that last post was directed to Rebecca.

My victory dance would be that I upped my elliptical for today.  I did 67 minutes ... 1,150 calories. It was tough!

Get this ... I've decided that by next summer I am going to borrow some of my daughter's clothes.  She is turning 28, fit, and fabulous.  But she wasn't always that way!  When she was in high school, she gained a lot of weight.  She worked so hard to lose.  Now it's a lifestyle for her.  I'll post some pictures later on.  For now on my way out the door to the beach.  Happy Labor Day!

Well, I'm back from my final vacation for the summer of 2008!  We stayed an extra day.  I had a fabulous time until the last evening where my 15 year old son had an accident doing a jump on his bike.  He is okay but has a nasty gash in his shoulder and a bit of road rash on his back.

I brought my scale and weighed myself on Friday, August 22nd.  I gained!!!!  I'm sad but I did party and enjoy my vacation.  So I'm okay with it. (I am no longer @ .8 ... now I'm @ a .6)

    August 1: 198.8. lbs
    August 8: 197.8 lbs
    August 15: 195.8 lbs
    August 22: 196.6 lbs
    August 29:

I read through most of the posts to catch up and am I impressed!  Some are losing in a week what I have lost in a month!

One more thing: ka2007, you sound like me.  Most of your posts remind me of myself.  You have many of the same frustrations.  I feel like I reading about myself. LOL

Safiyah - Looking Good!!!  It would be fun to keep us updated everytime you toss your current jeans in exchange for a smaller pair! Very cool!

Tigzy - 141!!! Congrats!!!  As for the September weight loss challenge, I am in!  Now that I am virtually getting to know everyone, I would love to be included.  Thanks for doing that and if you need help posting the weekly numbers, just let me know.  P.S. I'll be trying to get out of the .8 this week ... hee hee!

Mirian - I can relate on the slacking part.  I have been working on a project for three days and when I had a moment to break away, I didn't exercise :( I watched TV :(  UGH!!! But it sounds like you got back on track, as did I.  So it's on!!

Puppykisses - Sure a loss is great but at your weight, to maintain after a 9.5 lb loss is really good too.  So good for you.

All - I'll be vacationing @ El Capitan from Wed - Sun.  I am carrying my scale with me so I will weigh in on Fri but may not be able to post until Sunday evening (depending on the internet connection there).  I am not expecting much since I am pms but will try to exercise by brisk walks on the beach during vacation.  Everyone ... have a great rest of the week & weekend.  Keep up the positive energy & good work. You motivate me! THANKS :)

Wow Safiyah, you're getting consistent and amazing results! Good for you!

Here are my stats for this week. I am really working hard to watch my diet and I exercise often. It's happening but the results seem soooo slow. I did do better this week though. I am not sure why my weight usually falls on .8 ... that's weird.

    August 1: 198.8. lbs
    August 8: 197.8 lbs (1.0 lbs = .5% loss)
    August 15: 195.8 lbs (2 lbs = 1% loss)

Exercise ... 2938 calories burned. I forgot about the whole pushup challenge until I logged on today :( so no pushups.

As for my personal discovery, I noticed two things...

    1) I wore a suit today that I haven't worn in nearly two months. I wore it last when I went to see the musical Wicked on June 19, 2008. I started this diet & exercise program on August 14th, 2008. I have been somewhat discouraged with my progress because I have only seen a 12 pound loss; whereas, other people can lose 4 to 5 pounds in a week. However, when I put on that suit today, I was pleasantly surprised. It was comfortably loose in the waist and quite baggy in the legs. It felt good and I felt like I was finally making progress!

    2) I also noticed how much less sluggish I feel. I walk with a bounce in my step. I am not so irritable and more friendly. When I look in the mirror, I don't see unhealthy puffiness. I see healthy slenderizing.

    Here’s my status this week…

Wow! Everyone did so well!!!!! :)

For me ... not so much :(

    August 1: 198.8. lbs

    August 8: 197.8 lbs

Total lost: 1.0 lbs = .5% body weight lost

As for the exercise challenge... 2910 calories burned.

Since I went camping for three days, I didn't do traditional workouts, however; if anyone needed anything, I volunteered to do it or go get it. I walked everywhere. If we needed something from the ranger station or if something was forgotten at the campsite while we were on the beach, it was me who always made the trek back up the hill. Since I could not calculate these calories, I did not include them in the exercise challenge.

I am ready to kick butt this week! Especially knowing that the week of the 20th, I'll be camping again for 4 days.

I like adding the 200 pushups and adding to up the calories burned. I am also incorporating an Ab workout this week ... I hope.

tigzy - I feel for you big time!  Sorry, that I have no advise. I strained my back last week trying to act like super-woman ...  lifting and carrying far more than I am used to doing.  Ugh!  I could hardly sleep and walked around looking like a robot.  I am happy to be almost back to normal and wish for a speedy recovery for you!

Thanks again for the challenge colorblind and to all who are really getting into it!  I have been on many diets in the past and it wasn't that difficult for me to drop some weight but I've always gained it back and more.  On Atkins I lost 40 pounds in 14 weeks... figured I'd lose the weight and incorporate the exercise later.  That was stupid because it never happened and I gained the weight back plus 18!

This time I'm doing it right ... both exercise (bought an elliptical) and a sensible balanced diet.  When I first got the elliptical, I could barely go 2 1/2 minutes without taking a rest and now I am up to 45 minutes straight (700 calories).  I see very, very slow progress on the scale but I can see and feel the difference in my body.  Since I am so used to measuring progress by the scale alone, I really need this challenge to keep me going.

    GOOD LUCK EVERYONE  :)

I would like to join this challenge as well.  Thanks for posting it colorblind!

I agree that posting the percentage of weight loss would be a more fair calculation.  If someone doesn't understand how to do the calculation, maybe it should be optional to post and perhaps another member could follow up with an additional post and give them the percentage.

I believe that this calculation should work:

( Original Weight minus New Weight ) divided by Original Weight

So, if you originally were 200 lbs and are now 150.

    (200 - 150) / 200 = 50 / 200 = .25 = 25% weight loss

**Obviously one wouldn't lose 50 pounds in a week, however; I just used these numbers for an easier calculation.

Hi there!  Perhaps we could be support buddies :)

I am 46 years old, 205 lbs, and have dieted many times in the past.  I am ready to start anew.  I started exercising about a month ago but did not change my diet much.  I increased my exercise and changed my eating habits beginning July 14th. I feel really strong about this.  Other times when I lost weight, I did it by changing my diet and did very little exercise. Eventually I gained the weight back ... plus more.  I have vowed to stick to both exercise and diet ... hand in hand.

In my opinion, I think that you should add a little more to your profile.  I feel more at home and more connected when I see not just words on the screen, but real people, with real problems and real accomplishments who are just like me.  And others who are nothing like me but have their own set of things to deal with.  This is especially comforting since no one around me at home or otherwise deals with the weight issues that I do.  And at my job, it just wouldn't be appropriate.

I am somewhat new to the site having stumbled on it entirely by accident at the end of December, nevertheless; I love it.  The first month (January, 2007), I mostly observed.  Once February came, I joined a no alcohol challenge for the month of February and I am proud to say that I have done it.  For March, I will be involved in an exercise challenge for 1000 minutes.  I am looking forward to it.

Another interesting motivator is a particular forum started Feb. 23, 2007 09:24 by deejlb.  I was very motivated by her idea.  She took pictures of herself at the beginning of 30 days and at the end of 30 days.  She put the images side by side to see the results after 30 days.  She plans to do it again after 60 and 90 days as well.  I think I will do that as well.  Do you notice that when you start losing other people notice but when you look in the mirror you can hardly see the results?  If you post the pictures side by side, you can see the noticeable difference.  I think this idea serves as a visual diary so you know your effort is working and helps to keep you motivated.  Take a look at her before and after photos.  It?s great.

Well good luck to you and hang in there!
