Weight Loss Any gastric bypass members? Jan 09 2007

Hi

I had gastric bypass 5.14.01   Starting weight was 486, lowest post op weight about 233 in late summer 2002.  Current weight 282.  It's been creeping up, but it's time to get my act together and lose this weight once and for all.  My goal is 210, which will make me no longer "morbidly obese" a label I despise!!  Plus that's what my doctors want me to be.

I've added you to my friends list.  Please feel free to do likewise.  We can chat!!

Yup!  Day 5 and the constipation is looming!  I know now to take stool softeners until my body adjusts.  I don't absorb fats well, so they usually come out the back end.  But when the fat intake drops so much, there's nothing in there and I get clogged for a bit.  Your body will eventually adjust.  Right now you've probably flushed out a whole bunch of old stuff.  Hey, no one can say you're full of it, right?  lol   Wendy

PS if you can't talk bowel habits on here, where CAN you??!?

Welcome Skylark!  I've been where you are--I topped out at 486 in 2001.  Now I'm 272 (I had gastric bypass, literally to save my life)  It's hard.  Food will always be an issue for me.  I had gotten down to 167 about 15 years ago (Optifast, didn't last long at all...) and even then I was paranoid about getting on a scale in front of anyone.   I remember pre-Optifast getting on a postal scale at my friend's work because nothing else would weigh me.  I had to stand on the scale with a 55 gal drum of something, and then subrtract the weight of the drum from the total to get my weight.  Imagine seeing the scale say 755 pounds!!!! (Fortunately "only" 461 of that was me!)

Now I have a scale at home and weigh myself privately with no one looking.  Other than my mom (and on here!!) that number is a closely guarded secret that I will share with NO ONE!!!  Not even my best friend knows what I weigh.

Good for you working out at the gym so consistently!  I need to start doing that, but being in PT 3 days a week has kind of eaten up my exercise time.  When I finish PT, I am committed to using that same time frame to exercise.

All the best to you, and welcome aboard!  Wendy
Weight Loss Tips on Portions? Jan 08 2007

Well, for starters, get yourself a set of measuring spoons and measuring cups, and a little scale.  If you're eating pasta, measure it.  Meat?  Weigh it.  Salad dressing?  Measure again.

You'll need to get mom to help you out a bit by leaving dressings and sauces off long enough for you to take your portion.  Then you can add a measured portion of sauce/dressing and she can pour the rest over the remaining food!  If she's cooking from a recipe, plug it in here and see how it comes up.  If it's 3 cups of something and that is 6 servings, then you know that one serving is 1/2 cup.

Read labels read labels read labels!!!  Know what you are eating!  You may be very suprised by some of the "healthy" foods being anything but!

If mom is making fried chicken, take the skin off yours and make sure as much fat as possible is drained off.  Eat your veggies without butter, or with less.  It may not be perfect, but you'll have a better idea of what you're eating, and you'll be doing better than if you just go along with the crowd.

Best to you, and welcome!    Wendy      &nbs p;       & nbsp;      &nbs p;       & nbsp;      &nbs p;       & nbsp;      &nbs p;       & nbsp;
Weight Loss that's right, let's blame it on the kids! Jan 07 2007
02:56 (UTC)
I often joke that I gained 50 pounds with each of my kids--and they're adopted!!!  But it's true--I cleaned off their plates all the time!  (God forbid I should waste food...)

Now more often THEY finish MY food!  Both of them eat as much as I do alot of the time (they are 11 and nearly 10)  But both have ADHD and are on meds, so I never know how much they will eat, or what their appetites will be at any given meal.  It seems when I make more, they're not hungry, and when I make less, they're starving!!

In any event, yes it is harder to lose weight when you have kids, a husband or anyone else around!  When I was single, I made what I wanted, didn't keep "bad" stuff in the house, etc.  Now I have to make something the kids will eat--and they are NOT fussy eaters, but they do have limits.  I keep very few "junky" foods in the house, but we do have some leftover chips from lunch with friends, and some ice cream from the holidays.  I will not even go near them, since they are "out of sight, out of mind".  They go with their dad twice a week, and I figure they can meet their junk food quota with him.  We rarely eat out, except on vacations or special occasions, and I make my own food at home--no takeout or fast food for us, other than the occasional plain thin crust pizza.

I think it's all a matter of how much support you have from your family, who's in charge, etc.  With no spouse and young kids, it's all up to me, but if you have a hubby or teens who insist on other food being around, that would make it harder.  I have a friend whose husband hid the cookies he loved so his wife wouldn't be tempted.  It worked--she lost a lot of weight!

As far as those who have never had kids being judgemental, I would just say "wait and see!"  Until you've "been there, done that", you really don't know how you would handle something.

I was in the drugstore yesterday and mentioned something about healthy eating and wanting to lose weight.  The guy there, who I've known for years, even when I was at my heaviest, asked me why I wanted to lose more weight!  Hellloooo??  I'm 282 pounds, that's why!!!  Now, granted, that's 40% less than my heaviest but still, I am VERY overweight!

Ya just gotta wonder sometimes...

well now here's a happy miracle!

I got on the scale this morning (Day One--I NEVER start my resolutions until January 3) and I was just praying it wouldn't be too far over 290.  Well guess what?!?  It was 282!!!  So I've "lost" 8 pounds before I even started-lol!!

No problems with food today, but what do you do when you have no clue what is in something (like eating something someone else cooked)??  I just guessed, but I could be WAY off.  Not that it really matters, I guess.  I ate what I ate, regardless of what I write down, but I'm trying to be diligent about keeping track of what goes into my mouth.

Now I just hope I don't spend all night running to the bathroom!
Weight Loss Snack ideas Jan 04 2007

2 T of hummus with some baby carrots

a mini bag of microwave popcorn

celery with peanut butter ( I usually get 2 stalks with 1T of PB)

1 C plain yogurt--I add flaxseed, a dash of cinnamon, and a packet of Stevia, but you could add fruit or whatever you like (hey, don't knock it till you try it--I thought this sounded gross but I LOVE it!!)

4 Triscuits with 1 piece (total) Laughing Cow Light cheese

I'm open to any ideas y'all may have too--I tend to get in a "snack rut"

well I am totally in this group!  I haven't checked the scale yet, but I'm guessing about 290, 5'5", goal weight is 210 (at which point I will no longer be morbidly obese!!)  I'm 46 and tired of feeling 76!

I had gastric bypass in May 2001.  I was at 486--my all time high.  Got down to about 235, and over the last 5 years I've inched up.  This is my highest post-loss weight, and I'm NOT happy about it!!!  I've done WW and South Beach, but I realize that a "diet" isn't the answer.  I just need to eat sensibly!  Heaven knows I know HOW, I just have to DO it!

I'm so glad I found this site--just signed on last night.  We can all travel this road together.

dear bandchic93--if only I'd had the foresight at your age!!!  Good for you for taking charge now.  The best suggestion I can give you is to take it SLOW.  Don't try to lose it all at once.  You didnt' gain your weight overnight, and you won't lose it overnight either!  The others here have given you very good advice--cut out the junk, increase your activity, etc.  Do you have a friend you could "partner" with?  Even if she doesn't need to lose as much as you, it can help if you share this with a buddy.  And really, try to involve your mom as much as possible (unless there's a good reason why you can't).  Finally, if you are not getting any more support than that from your doctor...find a new doctor!!!!

Wishing you all the best and success!
