| Foods | Where do you get "Egg Whites" | Feb 24 2009 01:08 (UTC) |

Ya know, if you don't cook much or aren't around cooks (especially bakers), I can see why you wouldn't know what egg whites are.
But now that you know, it does make you laugh, doesn't it? You are being a great sport. |

| Foods | What do you order at Subway? | Feb 20 2009 00:29 (UTC) |

I am addicted to: Steak (cold...not heated or toasted... yes, the Subway workers think I'm weird) on Honey Oat bread, no cheese, add only onions and lots of spinach If I'm really daring... I'll add a swipe of Sweet Onion sauce And, I too, get asked from time to time if I am on a "special diet" due to my odd and limited sandwich choice. |

I used to like to chew on ice until my dentist told me it damages tooth enamel (at the very least) and can cause cracks/fractures of the teeth. If you have love to chew on ice, you might want to check into this. I had no idea I was doing damage to my teeth. It really is too bad 'cause ice makes a great diet "food." |

| Foods | Fruit Flies HOW do you get rid of them | Sep 16 2008 01:02 (UTC) |

I have had a lot of luck with this easy method: Put half water and half apple cider vinegar into a small jar or cup (I fill mine to the top, but don't know if that matters). Add a couple of drops of liquid dishwashing soap. Leave on the counter overnight. Voila... fruit flies will magically appear in the bottom of the cup/jar. I found this explanation on the internet for something similar: http://chelseagreen.com/blogs/dennispacheco/2 008/08/14/eco-friendly-fruit-fly-slaughter/ |

| Foods | Can someone please explain popcorn? | Sep 07 2008 15:23 (UTC) |
|
If you don't have an airpopper, you can pop your own popcorn without any oil by putting the dry kernels in the bottom of a small (lunch size) brown paper bag and putting it in the microwave for about 3 minutes. Times on the microwave vary, so just keep a watch on it as the popping starts to really slow down, check on it. Once you know the right amount of time for your microwave, you can adjust accordingly in the future. You can add spray butter, salt, etc. if you'd like, but I like mine plain. |

| I think it's all about the TREND.
As long as you are headed in the right direction, you are making progress. So, pat yourself on the back for being more aware now. Be proud that you will make wiser choices as you go along. It's a marathon and not a sprint, so you still have many miles to "make up for lost time." Good luck. |

| Foods | best food choices for going to an Amusement Park | Aug 06 2008 02:26 (UTC) |
1 |
| Will you have access to a car while there? If so, one idea would be to find out if the park allows free exit and re-entry (usually they will stamp you hand if you ask when you leave so you can return in the same day). Then check to see if there are any restaurant or grocery store options that you like nearby... or fill a cooler in your car and access that. Of course, that will probably only work if you either want to eat alone or if you can convince one or more friends to join you. Whatever you do, keep this in mind. If you end up eating more than you'd like or things that you know are not healthy for you to eat, if you truly indulge for just one day it will be a blip on the screen. If you go back to your eating plan/program the next day and keep at it, you won't know the difference in a week, month, or year. You really won't. Good luck and have fun. |

| Foods | Canadian Bacon (Ham) | Aug 05 2008 01:53 (UTC) |
|
| Based on a quick look at the canadian bacon listed in CC's database (I just put in the words "canadian bacon" and several choices came up), I'd say 55-75 calories for 2 oz. I'd say a large slice is probably double that? | |||
| Foods | "As long as it fits in your calorie-count." | Aug 03 2008 21:16 (UTC) |
15 |
| I also subscribe to the "as long as it fits in your calorie count" method of dieting. I know that it works for weight loss for me and is easier for me to stick to (I don't have to plan ahead so much or concentrate so much... I just log what I eat and keep it within certain limits). However, I understand and respect those who have taken food consumption to a different place. I really enjoy learning from the CCers who focus on things such as avoiding preservatives, "clean eating," avoiding meat, increasing fiber intake, etc. I am trying to incorporate some of the healthy ideas I learn here to add to my way of eating. But, regardless of what I eat, if I keep it within the calorie limits, I do lose weight. Losing weight and being healthy about it don't always go hand in hand. I'm trying to strike a better balance. |

| Foods | Coke | Jun 27 2008 13:45 (UTC) |
10 |
| You said, "But I'll do good for a week and not notice a change so I go right back to it." Take my comment with a grain of salt (because I have a hard time applying my own advice to my life), but I'm wondering if you are setting yourself up to fail? What are you really expecting to happen in one week? And, if you don't give up Coke/soda, and you want to lose weight, what other strategy do you think will have the affect you want in one week? I'm thinking if you take a long-range view of this, you might have more success over time. Good luck to you. I tend not to take the long-range view either! But I do think it makes sense and is the only true way to lose weight and maintain good health. Finding the tricks for sticking to it is the hard part... but the folks here on this forum do offer great support and ideas as you try to figure it out. I say, cut soda consumption in half for one week, then in half again the next and so on.... after you get to no soda, maintain that for one month (without replacing the calories with something else), and see what happens. P.S. My advice above is if you really want to cut out all coke. If you don't just count the calories each day and allow for it in your calorie count. You will still lose weight if you manage how much you consume. Some have to give up things completely or they binge. Others need a taste each day or they will binge. You'll figure out what is best for you. |

| Foods | Baked Potato calories anyone?? | Jun 15 2008 22:50 (UTC) |

|
According to wikipedia, a medium potato is 150g/5.3 oz.
Since you know your potatoes are 5.3 ounces, each, that is very helpful information. Since you know it is 110 calories, whatever method you choose to log it, you can double check that you get close to 110 calories and you will be correct. If you want to err on the high side, log in as 130-150 calories and I'd think you'd be safe. Taking some info I found at yahoo answers, about.com, and calorie-count, here’s the best I can come up with: A small baked potato, about two inches in diameter, has about 130 calories. A medium baked potato, about two and one-half to three inches in diameter, has about 160 calories. A large baked potato, about three and one-half to four inches in diameter can have about 275 calories. Nutritional values are based upon a ready-to-eat portion. It is assumed you will cook a potato or an egg before you eat it, so calorie and nurtient levels are calculated from the cooked item, whatever it may be. |

| Foods | if i'm air-popping my own popcorn... | Jun 13 2008 01:31 (UTC) |

| I just dump enough kernels in the bottom of a regular brown paper lunch bag to cover the bottom (a big handful), then I fold the top over one fold and put the bag in the microwave straight up (I don't flatten it or turn it sideways).
I tell you this not to discourage anyone from flattening the bag, but to let you know that it seems it works any 'ole way. It is quite amazing that it really is this easy. I then pop it for 3 minutes (microwave oven times can vary, so just listen to the popping sound and as it gets slower and slower it will be ready to take out of the oven). This is one of those things that when you find out about it, you think "why the heck didn't somebody tell me this before now??" |

I don't know a lot about it, but I know it stands for Glycemic Index and it's a way of rating carbohydrates (on a scale from 0 to
100) based on how much they raise your blood sugar level.
I think the idea is that the lower the number the less your blood sugar will spike and the less you will feel hungry, etc. One site that shows how foods rate is this one: http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/glycemicf oodchart.htm |

I know you are trying to get rid of them... and I'm not sure I really want them (grin)... but I am curious as to what you are even talking about. Where do you find this feature? Thanks in advance. Maybe I have it and I am just good at tuning it out. |

| I've just gotta know... do you eat in church to stay awake or because you just get hungry at that time of the morning or because it is the thing to do at your church (we have a video "cafe" section at our church and people do drink coffee, etc.) Just wondering... idle curiosity. If you are just trying to stay awake/focused, try Listerine breath strips. |

| Foods | binged on nuts | Mar 01 2008 16:36 (UTC) |

| It's hard to just eat a few nuts, isn't it??? I can tell that you are anxious, but try not to be. In the end, consistency over time is more important than a bad binge. Think about it... it was just 400 calories. If you are consistent the rest of the week in keeping your healthy eating goals (even if you do that just 80-90% of the time) it really will all even out. Sometimes it helps me to say, "oh well, I'm still moving towards my goal. I may delay my ultimate weight loss goal by one hour, one day or one week by this binge, but I will still reach my goal." I think you have to take a long-range approach and not berate yourseslf over every bite. It has taken me years to realize this. You are on a journey. You are making progress. And there are many here who are cheering you on. |

| Foods | Flaxseed | Feb 24 2008 19:48 (UTC) |

|
Put a few tablespoons in a small coffee grinder and then put
the ground-up flaxseed in cereal, oatmeal, yogurt or salad. I’m sure there are lots of other uses, but
those are the easiest. Do a google
search for other uses.
Believe me when I say this is easy. I am NOT a cook at all. I do NOT like anything that takes a lot of time or is complicated. And I certainly did not own a grinder (you can use a small coffee grinder to grind the flaxseed). But I actually do this and feel so healthy when I do. grin I bought a small Proctor-Silex Coffee/Flax Grinder for less than $15 from Walmart or Target (I don’t remember now which, and now that I have gone to find another one I can’t find that brand. So, I’ve ordered one online.) Keep the flaxseed in the refrigerator. And grind it as you use it. If you don’t grind it, you won’t get the benefit of the Omega 3 oils. I was watching Oprah this month and she was amazed when Dr. Oz told her to grind her flaxseed. She’s been using it for ages without grinding it. He said that there are still fiber benefits with flax, but grinding it releases the Omega 3. |
