The Lounge my cat pees on everything! Mar 12 2007

he has STOPPED!!! i have started leaving the window open a bit for him when i go to work. he's super obsessed with birds so i think he's occupied all day with plotting their deaths from the window and too busy to pee on anything.

it's really funny he was in the window yesterday afternoon watching a squirrel for over 10 minutes. once the squirrel was out of view he took off really fast to his litter box. my husband was like "was he seriously just holding his pee until he was done watching a squirrel?"

ohhhh, peach. he is an entertaining fellow.

i find being vegan very cheap. loads cheaper than what my omni husband spends on his weekly groceries, in fact. what i don't understand is if you're poor and converted so you can save money, why would you be eating veggie burgers at restaurants? a lot of people claim they're doing it for $$ reasons when they convert back to ovo-lacto, but it just seems like a conveiniance thing to me, sorry. plus this reinforces myths to the non-vegan population that being vegan is expensive and a huge hassle.

are you doing this for your boyfriend? why don't you do what you want to do? the whole lust thing is just weird, by the way. everyone feels lust, omnivore, vegetarians, and vegans.

some dark chocolate is vegan, you have to check ingrediants. checking ingredients is automatic for me, though! :)

The Lounge Going to New Orleans....help! Mar 06 2007

i left new orleans right after katrina and haven't been back, so i'm not sure if all of these places are still open...

  • mona's on frenchman street, awesome falafel. frenchman is at the end of the quarter, so it's a pretty long walk.
  • rev. zombies house of voodoo on st. peter and marie laveau's house of voodoo on the 700 block of bourbon (same company owns both) my old job!!
  • st. louis cemetary #1, walking out of the quarter it's right across north rampart.
  • french market on decataur street. you can always get cheap fresh fruit and veggies!! and on certain days of the week there's a farmer's market there, too. you can support small local farms.
  • walk across decataur from the french market to the river. if you keep walking towards canal st. you'll be at the new orleans aquarium. this is a nice walk along the river. i think you can take boat rides on the mississippi there too.
  • decataur street is where the locals go to bars, drinks aren't as watered down. don't go in the abbey, it's gross. aunt tiki's is good, and the wherling dervish is tolerable. remember this is the french quarter, you'll see a lot of ummmm... characters.
  • cafe envie on decataur. awesome (not corporate like pj's!) coffee. make sure to try some chicory in NOLA!
  • jackson square in the day time has local artists, palm readers, tarot readers, etc. stay out of jackson square at night, though.
  • royal street has a lot of art galleries. it's nice to just walk royal and look in windows. there are a ton of little shops, too.
i'll keep thinking... :D

it's not just "one chicken in the store", in fact it's so much more. by not supporting the meat and dairy industry vegans decrease the demand for meat and dairy. so sure... one person doesn't do much, but as a whole vegans and vegetarians do make a dent. and hey, if i decrease the demand for meat and save just ONE LIFE, that still makes me happy. i'm not vegan to save the entire world, i'm vegan to save what i can.

as for "giving human emotion" to animals, i've never heard anyone over the age of 10 make any comment anthropomorphizing any animal. BUT the fact is, animals DO FEEL EMOTION. it may not be human emotion, but they DO FEEL. people are very ready to accept that their pets can feel their forms of terror, unease, nervousness... why not cows? chickens? pigs? monkeys? rabbits? you get my point.

also, there is more than enough food in the world for everyone, but the sad fact is resources and land are tied up in producing cattle and feed for cattle... all for the well off. i'd rather not be a part of that.

but, i'm sure there will be a "who cares, you're still killing field mice when crops are harvested" comment from loriklorik, which i've heard approximately 3 times a week from people who feel that they need to argue about my lifestyle choices. plus, i find it hard to take anyone who says "milk doesn't hurt anyone" seriously on the subject of veganism, because they're obviously grossly misinformed.
Vegetarian Tofu? Mar 06 2007

first some tips!

  • buy some firm or extra firm tofu.
  • portion it according to the serving sizes on the container (the kind i get has 5 servings per block)
  • squeeze as much water out of each portion as you can and put each into it's own plastic bag
  • get as much air out of the bag you can and seal it
  • place all potions in the freezer
then take each serving out of the freezer as you intend to use them. i had tofu last night so i took it out in the morning before work. before you cook it squeeze the rest of the water out. freezing tofu gives it a firmer texture. (you want this for anything other than soups! with soups you can use tofu straight from the package).

tofu is a sponge, it has no flavor on it's own. you can get some excellant recipes on www.vegweb.com....

i am very excited to say that i signed up for health insurance today (new job) and my primary care physician's office has a nutrition program that is geared towards supporting healthy weight loss and PLANT BASED DIETS (vegan!) horray. i can't get an appointment until mid-may (ha) but at least it's there!

i would be interested in recipes for make-at-home-healthier-than-luna-bars! i too live in the middle of nowhere (actually a half hour from boston, but none the less it's a small town) and i have to buy things like lara bars in the (small) city that i work in. luna bars or clif bars can be found anywhere, but like i said i'm cutting back on soy.
Vegetarian Vegetarian vs. Vegan Feb 28 2007

i don't think the terms vegetarian or vegan are open to interpretation, neither is omnivore for that matter. someone who eats meat, even occasionally is not a "life long" vegetarian. i am not condemnng anyone for their choices, i just think that situations like this are what causes confusion about what a vegetarian or vegan is. i have known people who eat chicken and fish and claim vege, they can say it all they want, it doesn't mean they are.

just my 2 cents.

i've been doing terrible the past 2 friday nights with drinking and going waaaay over on calories!! it's effecting my saturday AM weigh ins wicked bad. i promise to do better this week, team! haha.

weird, luna bars are too high cal and you're suggesting nacho "cheese" and bean burritos (very high calorie!) and smart menu bags (which are 280ish calories and have white rice in them).... hmmm. luna bars are way better in my opinon, they're 180 calories and sweetened with natural ingredients. plus they're 70 or 80% organic, i forget which.

for snacks i like dried apples, celery w/hummus, dark chocolate, veggie booty, luna bars, or cucumber slices and salsa (i use the cukes like chips).

i can't hypothetically even put myself in a position like that for some reason. my brain is just refusing to acknowledge it and going "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!"

i think that would be a horrible job for anyone, knowing that those animals are about to be murdered, and feeding them their last meals!! vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore, i think that would be a horrible job. :[

oh man, you gotta let us know what ends up happening.

i have 10 with maaaaaany more to come. tattoo pain isn't like real pain to me, i am in love with getting tattooed!! the only thing that actually ever hurt was my foot, but it wasn't horrible. the most annoying was getting up my the inside of my elbow in my inner left forearm. i have a large day of the dead skull (sugar skull) there and the top fits right in the bend in my arm. that felt itchy the whole time.

my husband and i have matching ankh's... the egyptian symbol. they mean eternal life.

off the top of my head....boca vegan burgers, boca chk'n nuggets, boca spicy chk'n patties, gimme lean ground "beef" or "sausage", comes in tubes. i love the sausage it's spicy spicy and i buy it once a month or so to add to pasta sauce for the spicy factor or make vegan mcmuffins with it. you can make tacos with TVP spiced with chili powder, cumin, onion salt...

you might wanna try and limit fake meats, they're mostly overly processed and not really all that healthy.

make friends with mushrooms and add them to salads, or 1/2 and 1/2 with tofu in a tofu scramble!!
