| Try only eating the recommended serving size of these foods for one week and see if you lose weight. Seriously, just give it a try: Total Whole Grain cereal - 1 cup skim milk - 3/4 cup half a banana apple and 2 tablespoons of hummus salad with 8 shrimp,1/4 avocado, lots of veggies like cukes, peppers, and others with hardly any calories and a fat free dressing 1 cup Total cereal with a light and fit yogurt or 2 tablespoons of hummus in a Small pita Weight Watchers frozen meal (6-7 points) and a salad with one tablespoon of dressing 1/2 cup of Breyer's no sugar added, low-fat, double churned ice cream |

| sftbalgirl - do you mean you eat 1200-1400 calories and then run and not eat back the calories? or do you mean that if you burn 600 calories on your run you eat them back? I'm stuck at 149/150 and I'm wondering what you did to get past 145. | |||
| Fitness | how active am i? | Apr 12 2007 17:04 (UTC) |

| Sedentary means you sleep all day, not talking or moving or anything (if you are hungover and sleep the day away). Very light activity would be waking up and just sitting at a desk all day, talking on the phone, getting up a few times to get stuff and the like. Light activity is either exercise for 30-40 min. 3 times a week OR walking and moving like we all probably do when we are at work- you know, moving around to different people's desks and the bathroom, fetching things, cooking, etc. Moderate activity would be exercising every day for 30-40 minutes OR being on your feet moving around all day long (someone working in a factory or just not sitting at a desk or in a chair all day). Active would be if you are an athlete or a construction worker or someone with a really strenuous job that lasts all day. Hope this helps :) |

| Weight Loss | What caloric number pushed you into starvation? | Apr 11 2007 15:51 (UTC) |

| Weight - 148 Age - 23 Height - 5'4'' Body frame - medium Activity Level - light (I walk 1.5-3 miles per day) but then I exercise and burn an extra 300-500 calories about 5-6 times a week. Starvation Mode - Well, I think I was in it because I've been eating around 1300 calories for the pas and then exercising like crazy, but not losing anything! The calculator tool says that I burn 2000 a day for light activity and that I should consume 1500 a day to lose weight. What I'm trying to do now is actually have a net of 1500. I think that I was accidentally starving myself before. I have been a light eater (under 1300 cals/day) for so so many years that I bet my metabolism just slowed and I got used to eating very little. The problem is that I feel so guilty for eating 1500+ cals. It just seems like so much food and it feels weird not to go to bed slightly hungry. Also, I make myself eat even if I'm not really hungry because otherwise I wouldn't get enough calories. I just started this new technique 2 days ago, so only time will tell if it works or not. |

| Fitness | High Arches | Apr 10 2007 14:02 (UTC) |
|
| I have such high arches that they are considered a deformity! I totally feel your pain - I don't get pedicures because the women laugh at my feet. oh well. In any case, Violeta is right, you need to get arch supports made for your feet. I used to have custom made sporthotics, which were good, but they wore out. As for your other shoes, I recommend not wearing flats, as they are bad for high arches. You need to wear something that will elevate your feet a bit. An orthotic surgeon told me this, so don't discount it. I had a really cute pair of ballet flats which he told me to trash, as there was absolutely no arch support. Heels are almost better I think. Take care of your feet! :-) | |||

| I also lose in my waist first. Here are some good leg exercises my trainer showed me: 1. Lunge one leg forward and keep leg bent at knee. Other leg will be straight. Now bend lower leg till the knee almost touches the ground, to the count of 3 (slowly). Then raise up till leg is straight again and immediately start lowering. Do this 20 times (max) on each leg. One set. 2. Step ups - get a block that goes up to your shins or just use the stairs and step up, step down, step up, etc. Do this for 2-3 min. 2 sets. 3. Holding 2 weights in either hand (go as heavy as you can), squat really low to the count of 3, then straighten up. 20 times. 4. Mountain climber - go into push-up position. One leg will be between your arms, the other will be back, as if you were about to start a sprint. Now switch the legs, as fast as you can. Really concentrate on just barely having your toes touch the ground, your legs should be in constant motion. 4. Side squat - stand with legs hip width apart. keeping your torso as upright as possible, lean to the right and bend your right knee while keeping your left leg straight. Your right knee should be directly over your foot. Now go to the left side. For added challenge, jump as you switch legs. These have really helped tone my legs. Good luck! |

| This was interesting but made me wonder about myself: I weigh 148 but wear an 8 on the bottom and a 6 on the top. It seems almost that those sizes would be too small for my weight, judging from the data, but my clothes fit! It's very strange, but I guess it's just another example of how clothes fit everyone differently. Or maybe it just shows that I carry all my weight on the bottom. Interesting stuff to look at. | |||
| Weight Loss | SO CONFUSED... confusion=frustration=hopelessness | Apr 04 2007 20:07 (UTC) |

| Sarah622 and delicateangel - I was a runner growing up and my legs build muscle very quickly as well. Most of my weight is in my butt, hips, thighs and legs and it is really hard to get rid of. But Sarah622 - I know you are at 140 and want to get down, but you should know that when you are very muscular you can carry more weight than you could as a sedentary person. In 8th grade I had a bit of an ED, got down to 125 by starving myself, and then in 9th grade I started running cross country. I gained about 10 pounds, BUT, I was in seriously good shape and was no fatter - I actually looked better than when I weighed less. I know it's hard as a former gymnast to not strive to be as small as possible, but you shouldn't hurt your body in order to do so. I too want to be slimmer and I'm annoyed at how I'm in great shape and muscular but just cannot lose any weight. However, you know that you need more calories. Don't punish yourself by starving because it's only going to blow up in your face. Up your calories - I know what you mean about getting used to eating only a small amount of food, but I promise you your body needs more food in order to function properly. You will start to look better once you get enough to eat on a regular basis. | |||

| Teenage girls always do this to each other and it's terrible! Everyone's body is different and it takes some girls longer to mature than others. Trust me, this is only going to come back to bite her in the long run. You understand now what it feels like to look a little different and to not appreciate it when someone points out an imperfection. I've found that many girls who mature late have major problems accepting their body at an age when they should be celebrating looking womanly. Congratulations on understanding that your body doesn't have to look like a little girl's body to look good. Trust me, you will come to appreciate it even if you don't have stick thin legs now like your friend. | |||

| I completely understand feeling like your weight has control over your life. When I was a freshman in college, I gained weight and was the fattest I had ever been (160 at 5'4"). All I wanted to do was hide from people. I didn't want to go out into public and have people see how fat and ugly I was. I felt really really sorry for myself and sobbed and sobbed and everyone around me saw how miserable I was. Eventually I lost enough weight to go back out into public without wanting to scream and cry, but it was a horrible process. Although today I am thinner (not thin enough though), I still have moments of sheer horror where I cannot stand how fat I am and my skin crawls. I think that at moments like this we need to stand back and evaluate the good in our life. We need to realize that we are the only ones who see ourselves as fat and disgusting and that other people probably don't give a damn. The sooner we accept ourselves and work towards happiness (physical, mental, and spiritual), the sooner we will get back on track to having control over our lives. It's ok to be unhappy with the way you look, but please don't let it dictate how you feel about yourself as a person. Your weight is just one aspect of your body and it is not permanent. Take a deep breath, laugh, say to yourself, looks like I let myself eat a bit too much, time to cut back and get my body to how I like it. Everyone fights with their body, but we tend to let our bodies become the antithesis of our being. I'm sure you have thousands of wonderful qualities that a little extra fat does not cancel out. I know you feel gross in your skin right now, but you must remember that it is not permanent and that doing calorie count will help you change it. You are in control just by writing how you feel. Trust me, nobody is thinking bad things about you they are probably just sad that you haven't been yourself recently. So i suggest that you pick a few things that make you happy (other than food), and pursue them again. That will remind you of who you are and will motivate you. Who cares about people at work - you probably don't know about people's real lives either. Everyone wears a mask at work, it's how it is. If you are unhappy, you should find a new job. So maybe you can make several changes in order to get back to who you really are. Start yourself on a path of positive change and you will feel in control again. Good luck to you. | |||
| Weight Loss | Passover Large Meal/Calorie Average per Week | Apr 02 2007 15:12 (UTC) |

| we had a seder because my aunt wouldn't change hers from Monday and my parents in Connecticut didn't want to travel to Brooklyn, so my mom had her own a bit early on Saturday. No, it wasn't really Passover, but it was close enough. Today I'm going to concentrate on only a few bites of each thing (because I really love the food on Pesach), and will forgo lots of wine, using having to wake up before 6 AM for work as an excuse. My aunt likes to push food though, so this will be hard. | |||

| Ugh, the desserts always get me on Passover. We have 7 layer cake, macaroons, chocolates, etc. I had a seder on Saturday and my pants don't fit today. I don't know if it was the salt or what, but I am feeling majorly disgusting today and I have to go to another seder tonight. I'm tempted to starve so that my weekly calorie intake is normal. Should I do it? Will it really cause that much damage? I'm so depressed because I've been working so hard to diet and exercise and I feel like the seders ruined all my work and I'll never lose weight! :( | |||

| I'm also a bit confused - if I eat 1300 calories a day (my goal is to lose 20 pounds by mid July and I am 5'4 and 148 now), then does that mean EAT 1300 total and then exercise will just be extra help, OR eat 1700, and burn 400 to get to a total of 1300? I am lightly active (walk 1.5-3 miles a day) and also work out fairly intensely several times a week. I don't want my body to go into starvation mode so I am afraid that my defecit will be too big if I only eat 1300 and then burn over 300 cals. Can someone tell me how you are supposed to combine these two? Thanks. | |||
| Fitness | What is a HIGH Active Heart Rate? | Mar 27 2007 18:44 (UTC) |

| According to my trainer, if you want to lose weight, you need to do high intensity cardio - this means you need to get your heart rate up and keep it up. For me (I'm 23 and in pretty good cardio shape), this means a workout staying at 165 and doing intervals in the 170s-185s. I've had my HR go above 200 and I was fine, although really winded. But definitely, always try to keep your HR above 140, even during interval training - it is kind of a fun game to play. Instead of watching distance or calories, you watch the HR. Try going fast on a low intensity for a minute or going slowly on a really high intensity, just play around and see how your heart responds - make it interesting. Also, the first 10 minutes of the workout are the hardest - it seems so hard to keep my HR up during that time, but then I just reach a point where my heart's like, ok, let's do this, and there's less huffing and puffing (or it's at least less painful!). Also, when you do interval training, you get a better workout because your heart is working harder to pump blood. You let it slow down and relax and then bam! you speed up and it has to catch up to deliver blood to those working muscles. this makes for a high calorie burning workout. | |||

| to jennypenny25: thanks for the encouragement, you're right, i have been doing a lot of resistance training and my pants DO feel looser from a week ago, so that is good.
to sreeves8: it sounds like you are convincing yourself that you have no time. try doing squats when you have a few minutes free or doing push-ups against the wall or tricep dips on a chair or maybe use 30 min before bed to do some cardio. another suggestion is to wake up a bit earlier. I wake up at 5:30 and know that it is really hard to motivate at that hour (or earlier), especially when you dont' get enough sleep to begin with, but maybe you could pop a work-out video into the VCR or do some calisthentics (get a book that shows you some ideas). I walk to work instead of taking the subway, and that's a half hour of exercise right there. I've found the best way to find time is just to tell yourself that you have no other choice. Force yourself to make changes, because in the end, won't you feel better that you sacrificed a half an hour of extra sleep in order to exercise and take some alone time? you probably have a lot of demands on your time from other people, but make sure to remind yourself that those people will be just fine, even if they are slightly inconvenienced by your new healthy habits - they will adjust just as you will. |

| this group is amazing! I too have been stuck in the damn 140s forever!!! the last time I weighed under 140 was back in sophomore year of high school. so anyway, I eat about 1600 calories a day, walk either 1.5 or 3 miles a day, and work with a personal trainer twice a week, not to mention 2 other workouts a week. do you think I'm eating too much? I had lost a pound or two the other day, but when I weighed myself last night I was back up to 145! now i'm scared that all my work for the past week was for naught and that it's impossible for me to lose weight. help! is it really possible? i need some encouragement. | |||

| Hi Everyone. I just joined because I realized that I needed motivation in my weight loss. I'm not hugely overweight (142 at 5ft4), but I just don't feel like I'm at an ideal weight. All of my friends have always been so much slimmer than me and I'm sick of feeling like I'm the fattest one at parties, school, work, etc. I'm young and I want to look good and feel good.
I will lose weight because I owe it to myself to put being slim and feeling good above the fleeting flavor of good food. I will lose weight because I want to feel energetic and light. I will lose weight because I'm tired of being scared of trying on clothing and getting depressed when my pants strain at the seams. I'm tired of only pulling pants on up to my knee in the dressing room and realizing that there's no way they will fit. I will lose weight because being overweight is depressing to me, and I want to be happy with who I am, not unhappy with how much I weigh. |
