| Fitness | Do muscles really weigh more than fat? | Mar 03 2009 18:40 (UTC) |

My 2 cents is totally unscientific. 2 years ago, I was 8 pounds lighter than I am now. (BTW I gained 50 pounds since then, but have lost 40 of it up to now). So, I'm 10 pounds heavier tha 2 years ago. I bought a watch back then, had to have an extra link put in. Now, even though I'm 10 pounds heavier, I've got to have the link taken out. My watch is so loose it's driving me nuts.
So, muscle, water, whatever. The scale doesn't always cooperate. I measure myself once a month and the losses there encourage me when the scale doesn't. Good Luck! |

I'm a teacher and several of my co-workers & I depend on them a couple times a week. We know the sodium is high, but the junk they serve in the caf - even the teacher's lounge is high in sodium and HIGH in fat, so when you don't have time to make something or put together leftovers they are dependable. Eeryone has at least 2 spares in the fridge at work. Supplementing w/ salad and fruit is great. You might want to try to wean yourself from 7 days though. My husband & I usually throw 6 chicken breasts in the oven every Sun night and buy lettuce & tomato so we can throw together a salad a couple times a week. We make it at night & take it to work the next day. Another thing I like is having fat free yogurt & blueberries. You can add 1/4 tsp splenda if the berries are too tart. VERY filling. I use the Greek yogurts, w/ 0% fat because I figure I get enough fat everywhere else.
Good Luck! |

aha! Thanks Melkor, so I'm not a jerk if I ask for credentials. In the beginning, I was such an overweight blimp I felt ignorant being demanding as I could barely walk or lift anything anyway. I will probably get some dumb stares and dirty looks but it's my money and time and I need to take the interviewing process more seriously. So now, anybody out there with a REAL trainer in the NWest suburbs of Chicago that they are happy with?

I hate the cold and slush. Before my hubbie & I could afford the gym we started cal count & walked the mall. Especially before or after hours. They tend to be open at least 1 hour before and after. Only bring your driver's license, don't go in the stores. We live near Schaumberg and used Woodfield. Does your apt building have indoor stairs? Could you use a mini trampoline to jog? Lift knees higher for a better workout. You can unscrew the legs to put it away.
Good luck! |

Thanks Cindy! Back up 1 pound today, but I think it's water because our food tasted salty last night to me. OH yea, I feel good! (music in the background). Lot's more energy. I can MOVE with so much less effort. Going up the stairs isn't a groan anymore. Thanks for the encouragement! Hang in there with the kids. The school year is 1/4 over, 2 weeks til Thanksgiving, 3 weeks til Xmas, 2 weeks after that the school year is 1/2 over. Jodi, I agree w/ Cindy, your body is repairing right now. So it may be holding on to everything. Keep drinking water, resting, eating well and the results will happen! Gracie, I'm sorry. CONGRATS on that new 10 mark, oh it feels sooo good!! And gives the strength to go for antoher!! Gonna sign off now and DO something to get my metabolism started. |

Hi Everyone, I've been gone a long time. Yo-yo'd w/ the weight, was too busy w/ the start of school. oh, cinful, I feel your pain. My stories are no where near as bad as yours, some years are like this though. Anyway just wanted to check in because I made to wonderland finally!!!! 196.5. I'm not always successful at the slow and steady wins the race, so here's what I've been doing. I REALLY feel hungry if I visually don't have enough food. I have to help kids w/ their math at lunch so I don't always have time to eat a healthy salad or such. So for breakfast I have 2/3 cup of oatmeal made w/ skim and water (50-50). I put a teaspoon of polaner jelly in to flavor it and it satisfies me. Lunch, a lean cuisine 270 - 300 calorie meal. If I am still feeling like I going to start prowling for food (Haven't we ALL been there?) I do a myloplex or atkins protein drink. The extra protein, seems to do the trick and I'm ok til dinner. Dinner, 4-5 oz meat, 1/2 cup brown rice, veggies, veggies, veggies. I take way more than I can eat. My plate looks stuffed and it helps me visually with enough food. I know it sounds crazy, but it really psychs me out, or should I say in? Exercise. This has been the hardest. Finding ANY time to exercise after I did 2 hrs per day in the summer. I can't get a full hour in most of the time. I finally talked myself in to going anyway. I do about 40 - 45 mins on the treadmill. So to compensate for less time. I try jogging during commercials. I think this has really been part of the catalyst to move the weight. I know all of us have to find what works for us. You are ALL doing fantastic, staying the course. I'll check in now and then. As the school holidays come up, I will have more time! Tomorrow, give yourselves a little push. 5 minutes extra, a 1 minute, jog (if the street or sidewalk is smooth enough for that stroller), an extra run up the stairs, something, anything. Break the pattern, jog the fat cells, cmon all- I'm SO rooting for you!! Congrats Cinful!! You are my hero with your weight loss. I will try to catch up! You go girl! |

coffee- Me too! Slowly I weaned myself from cream to 2%, then to skim. It really wasn't hard. Now, I'm trying a cup of green tea, and I use a smidgeon of splenda. I keep splenda in a tupperware container with sprinkle holes and just give it a shake or two. I'm probably using at most 1/4 teaspoon. VERY satisfying! I don't know if the green tea will live up to any of it's weight loss potential than the delay tactic. |

Hooray!! Day one and you made it! Walmart sells Kashi bars, I like them better than nutrigrain. Breakfast, I have special K w/ the added protein & skim, it holds me better than regular cereal. Kahsi go lean is also good (both are sold at walmart). I get lean cuisines when they are $2 a piece ( at jewel or dominicks, this weekend they were 1/ 2 price at meijer 1.35 - 1.85 each - woo hoo), and sometimes supplement wth a protein drink. That keeps me pretty full. As far as the water, do you have a water fountain? You can get a brita pitcher and keep it filled on your desk. Or a neoprene bottle. Eventually you might start cooking low fat then make extra, prepare it in a container to take to work one day. We do this all the time on the weekend. Our kids are grown, but we still make 2 full pork tenderloins = 2 dinners today & later in the week, 1 lunch, and enough to freeze for a dinner during another week. Always date your food in the freezer and use it w/i 3 months for best results. This helps control things like sodium and gives you good options for terrible weeks. Always pack your food the night before. Even if it means 1 bag in the fridge, 1 bag in the freezer. It eliminates making poor choices or lack of choices because you are rushed. KEEP IT UP, YOU CAN DO THIS!! |

reasonable amounts of food types of food complex carbs vs white processed drinking water Hooray for taking the first steps! You can do it! |

| Do you walk in the am or pm? One thing that helped me get rid of choc cravings was drinking 1 choc atkins shake around 3 everyday. It gave me the choc I needed 180 cals. lots of protein. You can look it up here in the food logs.
At night if I'm craving, first I try water if that doesn't work, I go to bed. Not really a soln but it stops me from eating. OR I do an additional walk then. For some reason, immediately after walking I'm not hungry. Sometimes I think I am but it's satisfied by drinking so I think I mistake my craving for water as craving for food. |

| Welcome Anthea!! This is the place! These are the most positive motivated ladies around!!
Cindy - LOVE your nails. Can't wait to see the pirate theme. How's wonderland? l love losing weight - its like getting a raise because all of a sudden I have more clothes that fit that haven't in awhile! I got to take some size 20s back to the store that I didin't even wear! I'm trying to hold off cutting tags on the 18s Ice, I have an excellent trainer/fat burner. Do you have stairs? Step up with 1 leg, raise the 2nd in front of you as high as you can (hopefully your knee will be level with your waist eventually). Then lower that 2nd leg back to the floor and put the 1st leg down also. Repeat 9 more times, then do 10 on the other leg. This will be your 1st set. Do 3 sets if you can. You eventually want to work up to 25 on each leg so yes that will be 50 in a set, 3 sets 150. Some people have been happy with the slim in 6 video, you can get a used copy on ebay cheaper. When you start out if you can only lift your knee 1/2 way to your waist, so be it, but make it your goal to bring it higher everyday. It's more important to get the knee high, than to add the reps. -- You WILL be winded, It might make you sore so stretch first. But by far, this has been an excellent move for me. -- my trainer gave it to me. Hi Global! Where do you get pu-ehr? I'd like to try it. Bangladesh? You go girl! |

| Cindy - you are truly a good person teaching all those little people. I'm on the other end of the spectrum teaching algebra, geometry, and computer science in hs. I don't know how you do it!
Renam21 - you have the power to change. I have sometimes wallowed hours a day in front of the computer or doing nothing. It's hardest taking that 1st step to do something else. But when you do, it will eventually get easier! If it's not too windy can you try walking with an umbrella? You won't walk as fast but maybe it would be great just to get out of the house? Good luck! I'm pluggin for ya! Go Sarah! Lose another! Shannon I want to know where you are too? Jodi, what did you do in Breckenridge? I'm sure a bunch of you are now cracking up! We've never done much other than Florida and Caribbean beach vacations - but we do like them. Good luck Brooke, Penny said it all. You can do it, one step at a time! You go Shizzi! While I was off this summer I went to the gym daily and sometimes 2x! Needless to say, my kitchen did not get painted lol! |

Hang in there Barbara, sorry for your loss Karen. Cindy - you just keep us all going! Welcome to the newcomers - I'm happy you found this thread! Oh the 80s were so good! Let's put some on and dance! Only worked out 1 hour today, too much stuff I have to get done. DID go to a pool for an hour. What should I do in the water to work out? I'm not sure I can swim all the way across. Maybe I should just try it and see. |

| Good going on the garage sale Penny!-- luv the extra $$, & love the socializing! I had a neighbor who used to do 2 a year while our kids were little. I know it sounds crazy, but she would tell all her friends and we would all bring stuff and sit out with her so she was never alone.
It was so great she even had people ask to be called when we were having it because they were buying all our kids hand me downs because with such a variety of friends, it was like a dept store in the driveway. That was back when pokeman cards were big also. One year she and I were mad at my son and her son because they cleared $150 in 3 hours and decided that was enough. We made them stay because people were coming for the cards then looking at our stuff 2nd. |

Jodiferjuniper, we are 2 peas in a pod. I hope to catch 209 tomorrow! Just got back from the gym, 2 hours! 1 hr weights, 1 hr treadmill - watched csi-new york. When I go really late like this, I can watch it closed captioned (3 machines have it). I should get ear plugs but I also like the beat of the music in the background. ok everyone, if you did great, yell hurray! if you did ok, I'm proud of you! | pfui. took my son out to celebrate end of summer classes. Went to japanese restaurant ordered broiled lobster w/ special sauce. Well.... the lobster was broiled but then encased in an egg/custard type batter and fried. YIKES! I took it out of the batter stuff, ok I did eat some of it, but mostly ate the lobster & veggies. Can't possibly log this cause it's one of those dishes you pick and have no clue what's in it.
It was good but next time I might just stick to sushi. If I gain tomorrow you will hear me scream right thru the computer! My son DID love his food tho, :0) so, it was worth it. |

| 10 lb increments is good for intermediate goals. Easier and more encouraging that you can accomplish something.
As you start to lose 10 or 20. You will start to notice things like, "Hey, my thighs don't rub anymore?" Or something similar. That's what keeps me going. I haven't gotten under 200 yet, I'm at 210. But I can't wait to reach wonderland (100s as opposed to 200s). Cmon, you can do it! |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
