| Motivation | Where would you be in 5 years if you didn't start your weight loss? | Jul 20 2008 17:56 (UTC) |

Right now I'm 136..gaining about 5 pounds per year would put me at 136+25...which would mean a whopping 161 pounds on my little frame. Yikes. Now THAT's motivation. |

| Weight Loss | Women, 5'6", I have a question for you. | Jul 13 2008 16:32 (UTC) |

I'm 5'5.5'' and have only gotten up to a size 6/7 at 145 pounds....so I assume that I would be 150-155 as a size 8. I am half asian though...so my small frame is probably even narrower than usual. |

A few question to ask yourself: How many calories do you burn per day on average (without exercise)? How many calories per day are you consuming? Cutting calories too low can put our your metabolism's "fire" and will stop weight loss. Believe me, I stopped eating at one point and for the first week I dropped a ton and then I coudn't get the scale to budge to save my life. Keep the fire burning by not putting too much food on or too much off. Balance is the key. Are you being honest about your portion sizes? Are you eating 100% whole grains? Is your cereal free of any enriched wheat products? How about at the salad bar...are you using a lot of dressing? Eating pasta or potato salads? Those are no good. Try dipping your fork in a side dish of dressing with every bite vs. pouring it straight on the salad. Also make sure you're eating a colorful salad. Choose romaine and spring greens over iceburg...more vitamins. Don't eat too soon before laying down for bed, either. Try to give yourself at the very least a couple of hours. It sounds to me like your daily activity level decreased with your new job and that will slow your metabolism, too. Instead of feeling pressured to do exercise (which is essential, but I understand how you feel about getting upset and unmotivated), just try to do little things to up your activity levels for now. Park farther away in the parking lot, take the stairs...typical things like that. I also try to pick up around the house and clean whenever I'm feeling anti-exercise to at least get my body moving a little. Every little bit helps. |

| read nutritional labels, people!
lots of veggies and fruits are much higher in cals/carbs than others... the only safe thing to gorge on is lettuce, kale, seaweed, and celery as far as i'm concerned. i used a freshly squeezed lemon on the lettuce for flavor. |

| you are on a dangerous path to somewhere i've been before...your calorie intake numbers and habits are suprisingly similar to the habits i had right before i experienced full blown anorexia and bulemia.
i have to say, being enviously thin in such a short time got me lots of positive attention that felt great, but i was sick, i felt like crap, and i was actually miserable inside...the obsession consumed me and i was ALWAYS counting calories...i flipped out on a waitress that put a lemon wedge in my water in front of my friends!!!! that's just the tip of the iceburg...it's horrible. please be careful...300-500 calories a day is inexcusibely low for anyone regardless of reasoning. you're not that vain, are you? to sacrifice your health like that just to get to your goal FASTER? b/c you're going to get to it! |

| I WORK AT STARBUCKS, TOO!
You know what I do? I don't touch the stuff (well, I did at one point, but not anymore). I don't drink anything but black coffee or americanos with splenda or sugar free syrup. A DOLLOP of skim milk if i need the cream to cut it. Otherwise I'll fill up on iced water or sugar/syrup free iced tea or hot tea. All the 10 calorie and below stuff. Sugar subs are your best friend. I don't touch the pastries b/c I try and shove something healthy down my throat on my way into work. If I don't bring my own healthy snack, I munch on their fruit and cheese tray or the salad....don't dump the dressing in, just dip your fork into the tub for every bite. It helps you eat about half less dressing...and the salad is GREAT! Stay away from the sandwiches and other stuff....I know the pastries are delicious but making your goal weight will feel a hell of a lot better than tasting that lemon pound cake!!! Discipline! Stay strong! |

| I just wanted to add, to all of the posters who are apparently psycholigists and psychiatrists b/c they're diagnosing everyone who eats under recommended calories as having eating disorders....
As I previously stated, I have had an eating disorder in the past where I ate deadly amounts of calories (0-30 cals a day for the majority, up to 600 when I started feeling bad--which was pretty often considering)...I recovered and later decided to go with bulimia...and then I recovered from that 3 years ago. My point is, I went to see REAL therapists afterwards (with REAL phD's and MD's) b/c of my self image issues and had to do food/calorie logs...not anything strange to an e.d. recoverer. I submitted every week a list of calories between 500-900 calories a day and GUESS WHAT?! None of my therapists ever said anything about it. They looked at it and didn't ever tell me I was eating too little, or that I should eat more. I can only assume that meant my calorie intake for my body was okay...especially considering all of those foods are 100% whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fish and other lean meats, nuts, and low fat dairy (like cottage cheese)...not a half a hamburger once a day or something like that. On top of that, I took multivitamins and other vitamin supplements to fill in the nutritional gaps. I guess that since my medical and psychiatric doctors viewed me as cured of eating disorder and also dismissed my concern about my low calorie obsessions, it can't be bad for me. I admit that I'm kind of glad to see people on this site who are concerned for others' well-being...if someone had noticed my consistent drop in calorie consumption when I was 17 I may have never had to go through the hell I experienced...but let's not just label people as seriously sick without any professional experience in dealing with eating disorders. I don't support anyone destroying their body, and I definitely do NOT support eating disorders. But low cal intake of HEALTHY foods that are higher in nutrition than the processed junk you find all over the grocery store is obvsiously not that bad for you. To the person who posted about having an e.d. and eating less and less cals...PLEASE get help. You have already made the first step by admitting what's going on...the obsession can REALLY take over your life and mind...it's a horrible way to live. The sooner you get professional help the better. It's hard to let go, but I PROMISE, from personal experience, that finally letting go of the obsession will lift a HUGE burden from you....if you ever need or want to talk, please do so. sorry for rambling. |

| I think its funny that people are actually getting hostile about this...what's with the attack on her? She was just speaking her mind...you don't have to agree, but you also don't have to be insulting.
Every professional doesn't recommend below 1200-1000 cals in food per day. It's their legal obligation. It's what's been taught in school. I think that LorikLorik knows whether she feels normal more than someone just reading her post on eating less than 1000 cals. Just b/c you can't/won't do it doesn't mean she's dying over there. If that were the case, all the celebreties would be dead. :) I'm not trying to make anyone mad, I'm just saying...be NICE. If you're genuinely concerned about her then why get rude? Or is that animosity coming from...? I happen to know that yogis eat very little and live loooong, very healthy lives. Personally, I've eaten more than the recommended amounts for a couple of years, the normal 2000 cal a day thing, the less than 2000 over 1200 cal thing, and the 30 calories a day thing. YES, all over the damn place. I have to say, I can't even imagine eating only 30 calories a day EVER again ( I was SICK... mentally and physically!) but I honestly felt phsyically worse when I was overeating!! Right now I'm doing 800 or less cals a day until I get to my goal weight, at which point I'll step up to 1200. Once in a while I give myself a little breathing room if I've been consistent at the gym. I admit at first the low cals did have a negative effect but on just the third day I felt fine...in fact, when meal/snack time came around I discovered myself much fuller than usual off of just a couple of bites! Now, I don't think someone who's underweight should cut calories at all, but hey, I've got TONS of stored triglycerides just waiting to be burned and the only way it's going to happen is if i cut back consumption and increase activity. I'm not going to get sick or die from it. My food intake is plenty to generate enough ATP for my body to function more than properly. That's my personal situation. Don't get mad or rude b/c of how I choose to live my life. Don't insult my intellegence just b/c you have some moral issue with it. I know what I'm doing isn't the "healthiest" route, but it's not causing my body damage to lose 1.5 pounds every 2-3 days vs. 2 pounds every 7 days. It would be if I weren't eating, but I happen to eat plenty for me!!! |
