| Pace is a relative term. Do some research on race results and you'll get an idea what kind of a range of pace there is. At a 5K on any given day, there will be the elite runners at 4-5 minute mile all the way down to the walkers at 15-17 mm. | |||

| The banana is a great idea, sometimes they pass them out at races. I usually carry clif shot blocks, which are sort of like gummies only with electrolytes. Breakfast is usually a piece of wheat toast with a TBS of peanut butter and a cup of coffee, about an hour and half before the race. I don't eat anything until about mile 6, but everyone is different. Fig newtons are great too and don't make my stomach revolt. | |||

| It sounds like an IT band issue. I get that when I ramp up mileage too quickly or do a lot of hillwork. I have it now, in fact! And it's because I've been slacking off in other areas.
You can run through it, just let pain be your guide. I used to go to PT for it, but really it's just a matter of strenghtening the hip flexor muscles. Lots of squats, regular and one-legged, and balance work. Practice standing on one leg for a couple of minutes, keeping knee slightly bent. Switch back and forth, working both legs. You should see improvement in a couple of weeks. |

| Fitness | 2 months with no workout. can you help me with a new plan? | Sep 06 2008 03:00 (UTC) |

| It sounds like you're getting bored with your workouts, which is pretty common. And once you get bored, it's easy to rationalize not going to the gym, getting out on the bike, going for a run, etc. Working out, even at a crowded gym, can be a very isolating experience for many people. Instead of changing up your workout routine, how about trying to find a workout buddy with similar goals? You can encourage and push each other. If you can't find someone to workout with, a personal trainer might be a good bet. |

| It depends on the race as to whether or not they ask for your ID. Why not just pick another race that will accept minors? | |||

| Jamminator has given some good advice. Check out the local riding scene at your local bike shop. You need to go there anyway to get a bike. They can set you up with a group ride that will match your experience level. |

| I've been running for six years, started with 5ks, then 10ks, then half marathons and sprint distance triathlons. I ran my first full marathon recently, after training for over a year. I used a couple of half marathons as training runs, then had long runs of 20, 21 and 22 miles before a three week taper.
All I can say is that the pain in those last few miles was otherworldly. |

| A bucket...flip it over and sit on it if you are changing shoes for run/bike, or just to keep your stuff in.
Put your helmet on your bike seat so that you don't forget to put it on (this is surprisingly easy to do!). Since the swim is last, you won't have to worry about drying your feet off, which is nice. Just have fun with it! Good luck! Anne |

| tr, hope you're ok. It's so scary when you're cruising along and a big dog comes barreling out of nowhere.
The weather is beautiful today. It would be a great day to take off and go for a ride. Let's all hope for sunshine and warm temps. I rode in the rain for the first time this weekend, it was my first attempt at a triathlon. It I chose the mini (not quite up to snuff on swimming sprint distance, but maybe this summer). It was kind of scary. Someone crashed pretty badly on a corner, although he did get up and complete the course. I have a newfound respect for you hardcore riders. |

| Weather permitting, I've got my first group ride of the season planned for Sunday morning. And if the trails would ever dry up, it will be a treat to get the mtb out again. TRHawley, you may be right about people being scared off. I think we're safe in here, unless someone from the other camp wants to come in and start badmouthing cycling because it's too much cardio. | |||

| Safina, I don't worry too much about my diet. I eat between 1700 to 2500 calories per day, depending on activity level for that day. I'm 5'9" and my weight fluctuates between 153 and 158. That may sound heavy to some people, but my clothes are a size 8 and I'm happy with that.
Mostly I just try to eat healthy foods. I could probably stand to lose about 5 pounds, but I know that it will come off eventually. I don't weigh myself very often, just go by how my clothes fit. If things are getting snug, I just cut back a little and watch portion sizes more closely. If I know I've got a long run coming up, I might eat a bit more pasta the night before. If you are hungry, give yourself permission to eat. It sounds like you are doing a great job! |
