I'm basically maintaining now but want to lose 2 lbs I regained--sometime, though I don't really have a set date. The idiot tool tells me I have to eat 1200 calories too. I think it's a standard number or something. You'd think they'd up it a bit, considering they say in the next breath that 1200 is the absolute lowest any woman should go.

Here is one of my all time favorite Indian dishes, it requires no special ingredients (unless you consider salmon colored lentils special).  I just put it in the recipe section as "Lemon Dal" if you want to use it.  Its pretty fattening if you eat a good size bowl of it.

Ismail Merchant’s Passionate Meals

Nimboo Masoor Dal

p. 102

1 ¼ cups vegetable oil divided...

My other all time favorite is barely edible, given the amount of butter that goes into it, Palaak Paneer.  I have made it without the butter, and you might as well just eat steamed spinach, still yummy, but not the same at all.

Whoa, 1 1/4 cups of oil??? This must be a deep-fry recipe?

As for the palak paneer, are you thinking of Butter Paneer? That calls for a few tablespoons of butter, but the recipe I make for palak paneer just calls for 1 T of ghee (I use olive oil) and it tastes delicious.

I literally have been LIVING on Indian food for at least the past 2 months--cooked by me (paneer, palak paneer, mattar paneer, chana masala, lentil soup...). It's super-healthy and I never bother with the ghee (just use 1 T of olive oil), nor do I fry the paneer (cheese). I make the paneer myself out of part-skim milk. I'm currently on maintenance so I can't speak to the weight loss aspect (although it's always a case of moderation), but I've had no problem keeping my weight where it's supposed to be or getting all my nutrients, and I'm not exactly eating tiny servings.

I also live in a small town. I had intended to go all the way to Toronto (big city with a large Indian population) to get spices, but found a small Indian spice store in a nearby small city. Look in the Yellow Pages for "Asian" rather than "Indian"--they're often listed that way. If you've got an Indian restaurant, there should be an Indian grocer or spice store somewhere nearby, too. I also found a surprising amount of Indian spices in the supermarket. Or, as someone else said, there's Internet ordering, although the price is usually high--Indian spices are dirt cheap. And don't bother buying a cookbook, there are tons of excellent recipes online for free. Just search on your favorites.

Weight Loss Losing Inches Versus Pounds Sep 07 2009

Definitely inches. I'd rather wear several sizes smaller clothes and *look* like I weigh less than simply weigh 20 lbs less. I consider inches lost muscle gained--a good thing.

(And FWIW, it took me a LOT longer than 20 weeks to lose 20 lbs--like a year or more. So kudos to you for that 20/20!)

I'd like to join. I've just recently gone into maintenance mode and am mostly concentrating on eating healthy and sensibly and being more active. It took me 2 years to lose 35 lbs so I definitely had time to develop a whole new mindset (it's not a temporary diet, it's for life). I'm very active gardening and walking/hiking with my dogs in the summer, but I'm not sure what I'll do in the winter; I hate cold and snow and I haven't yet found a structured exercise to fall in love with. Oh--my name is Marg, I'll be 50 in October. I enjoy cooking, which has probably been a lifesaver--at least I know what's going in!

Oh, I loved that rhyme!

How about the cinderella rhyme while jumping rope:

Cinderella, dressed in yella,

Went upstairs to kiss a fella.

Made a mistake and kissed a snake,

How many doctors will it take?

I remember that one! And then the 2 kids on either end swinging the rope would go really fast... There was another one but I can only remember the beginning:

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue

Fourteen hundred and ninety-two...?

How about "free from fleas forever" or am I dating myself now? Heck, why stop there..."the fickle finger of fate" with the appropriate hand sign.

I've been using it in my coffee for the past 5 years--because I like it really sweet, and using real sugar would probably be too high-cal!--with no ill effects whatsoever. As with absolutely everything in the world, some people will react to some things where others won't. Look at the kids with peanut allergies. Yet for a huge portion of the population, they're harmless. I'd rather put stevia into my body than aspartame or even refined white sugar.

I used to just boil it with about 1/2 cup lemon juice added to the water, but then a fellow CCer turned me on to roast asparagus, which I then spritz with lemon juice when it comes out from the oven--yum! Better than french fries.

Would people react the same way if you made no reference to calories but instead said you were trying to make a lifestyle change, or that you were trying to eat healthier? To me, anyway, that wouldn't instantly equate to "diet" or "losing weight" but to improving oneself.

Fitness Shoes for my whacked out feet! Feb 19 2009
17:03 (UTC)

I have whacked out feet too only I have fallen arches, so I don't know how relevant this will be...it sounds like you're really giving your feet a beating, though, which isn't good, down the road. I suggest you go to your doctor, have him/her refer you to a podiatrist, and see if there is some sort of custom orthotic (shoe or insert) that can be made to help your feet. If you have insurance it will be covered (at least the appointment, perhaps a portion or all of the orthotics), and you'll be grateful for the extra expense in the long run--I've been wearing orthotics for years but hadn't been wearing them this winter because they didn't fit in my boots properly--now I've damaged my left foot further so it's excruciating to walk--which makes it really hard to exercise if walking is your main form of exercise!

We are regulars at a local Indian restaurant and they always give us one of those each as a free dessert. They're just a deep-fried plain donut hole (called Timbits here in Canada) soaked in honey water, so sickeningly sweet and full of fat I feel nauseous after just one bite if I try to eat it after a full meal. I feel bad if I leave it, because they think they are being nice by giving us free dessert, but now I'll definitely leave it, knowing I'd be eating 150 cal! I can't imagine how you were able to eat 4 of them!

Hate to depress you all, but I've been stalled since last September, bouncing up and down everywhere between 141 and 137 but not going any lower than 137 and that, only rarely, despite doing everything I should be doing. If I can plug away with nothing but blind faith in physics and determination for 6 months, then I'm sure all of you can manage a few weeks! Hang in there.

I prefer real cheese but if you want to use low fat cheese up the quantitiy to 1 1/4 cups, and the calories/serving drops from 367 to 318. It actually tastes better reheated the next day.

Carrots explode in the microwave.

Don't make bouillon with a bouillon cube (as in, boiling water) and then try to shake it or put it in a blender with flour to make a base for gravy--it sprays all over!

If your dog won't eat it, you've got to ask yourself--is it really a food?

Weight Loss I just don't know what to do anymore - I have given up. Dec 21 2008

I'm a strong believer in The Little Engine That Could, or whatever story included the line "I think I can I think I can I know I can I CAN!" In other words, if you don't like something, change it. Giving up gets you nowhere. It's automatic failure. Take charge, get determined, and JUST DO IT. I'm proof positive that you can change yourself and/or your circumstances, but you have to take responsibility for that change. I hit rock bottom when I was 32, ended up sharing a hospital room with an elderly, quietly wise woman after a suicide attempt, and was shamed into taking charge of my life, changing anything I didn't like. You have to decide what you really want and make it happen instead of making excuses. Stress is part of life. If you took a year off, you'd still have to come back to the stress, without the mental tools to handle it. So get a grip, get another job, but get proactive.

Original Post by pengy:

I like the new analysis, can't say I like the weight chart as much though. It looks cleaner but you can't see the individual days and weight in detail as the last one, at least on mine.

I'm with you on the weight graph. I was tracking monthly spikes, but now I'm being shown a chart with 4 month increments, which makes it absolutely useless to me. I know I've been gradually losing weight, I want to see its weekly/monthly pattern, not the big picture. The 3D pie chart also throws me off in terms of proportions. It's a pie chart, for pete's sake, not artwork. I'm not here for pretty graphics, but informing tools.

I also wish there were an option to choose the old or new graphics.

Fitness Neck muscles. Nov 08 2008

1

I've had arthritis in my neck for over 10 years--diagnosed after I had a constant headache for a year straight. Went to physio and found the exercises they showed me only aggravated it. I found that chiropractic adjustments and massages once a month will alleviate any pain, loosen up tense muscles that can trigger headaches or neck pain, etc. Last month I had to miss my monthly massage because I got a tattoo on my shoulder, and I'm definitely feeling twinges in my neck (and shoulders) because the tension hasn't been loosened out of my neck and shoulder muscles for too long.

I also take amitriptylene (sp?) daily and, when my neck is particularly painful or tight, I use an inexpensive TENS machine and/or a heat bag--one of those cloth things filled with grain or beans or something that you heat in the microwave and drape around your neck. It's now very rare that I have to use the TENS machine or heat bag, though, because the pain is totally under control (read: gone), and no more headaches. I've also found hatha yoga beneficial.

Hope this helps.

Wear a bra. I didn't wear a bra from age 16-32 because I was small-chested and didn't think I needed to support something so bitty. But guess what! I'm 49 now, and even the bitty ones SAG as you get older. And that's despite being into hardcore weightlifting for 5 years in my early 30s. WEAR A GOOD BRA.

I recently spent 3 1/2 weeks in Japan and came away with a new appreciation of their diet--but what the girl in that YouTube spot didn't mention is that the Japanese have a thick curry stew served with rice that's basically their version of a heart attack on a plate (and unfortunately, delicious). Then there's tempura--battered/fried vegies, anyone? And the Japanese woman who took me to a tea ceremony said her favorite part of it was the sweets they serve--and they are sweet--like eating icing! Most of their everyday sweets are made of bean paste and aren't very sweet (and are probably healthier); everywhere we went, if there was a sweet shop, it was packed with Japanese customers--so they do have their own variation of sweet tooth. Serving sizes are smaller--you come away feeling "just right." And the flavors are delicate and subtle, a nice change from the extreme overdoses of flavorings everything in NA seems to have now. People eating out seem to be there more for the socializing than the meal. But--MacDonalds has invaded! ARGH! It's like polluting the fountain of youth...

But it's true--we were in Tokyo most of the time, and in a city of 12 million people, I counted 12 overweight Japanese.

Fitness Just walking and dieting - enough or not enough? Sep 19 2008

Excuse me if I'm repeating what others may have said; didn't read all the posts, as I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents' worth. Walking is exercise, as are gardening, vacuuming--anything where you're moving, as far as I'm concerned. The only time I did anything approaching formal exercise was last winter when I treadmilled 50 min. every day during the worst part of the winter (and I hated it); otherwise I've lost all my weight (34 lbs) only through eating sensibly and walking, gardening, and housework. Of course, I wasn't in any kind of hurry, as I've thought of this as a lifestyle change rather than a short-term diet...
