| Weight Loss | Those of you looking to lose only 10 lbs or less... | May 02 2007 02:53 (UTC) |
|
| I don't think I've calculated the correct amount of calories I require either. I have had 10 pounds to lose since January and nothing has happened. Work out 1 hour each day, 5 days a week (variety of intense cardio, weights etc.) and consume approx 1300-1500 cals per day (5ft1, 120 lbs). | |||

| I won't even jump on the scale at that time of the month I'm so bloated. If how I feel is a reflection of how much I weigh, I gain 3 -5 pounds easy! lol I'm currently going through the PMS (the week before) and I'm starting to get the munchies etc. "Hold on to your panties, you're going for a ride!" You gotta laugh-and remember that it all falls back in place afterwards. | |||

| Timsmom - all of you. Don't you dare give up! You will do this! You just need to find the magic formula for you. I have been working at this for 3 years and it's only in the last year that I've found what works for me. Three years of running and working out, eating, not eating, back and forth, up and down. Not fun but SO worth it now. I'm not even at my goal! I fight EVERY day to find and keep the balance. There are still times (like that wonderful time every month) that I want to quit too. I have bad days/weekends just like all of you but I pick myself up and brush myself off and get right back on track. So it will take me a little longer to reach my goal - so what? I NEVER lost 10 pounds in a month but that was me. I want this to be a way of life for me, not a prison sentence. P.S. I haven't even figured out how to calculate how many calories I'm supposed to take in versus the amount of exercise I do! LOL I'll be watching the other responses you get to try to figure it out too! | |||

| Potatoe chips - You think you can have "just one" and before you know it, you've eaten half the bag! Add dip made of sour cream (14% fat) and onion soup mix (major sodium) and you have yourself an "artery clogger". | |||

| I've been thinking of asking the same question! I can't get over how much physical work and food planning I've had to do over the past year to lose 15 pounds and fear that I won't be able to maintain the pace. When people reach their goal, do they continue to workout 5-6 days a week at high intensities AND continue to watch their caloric intake? Does this get easier over time? I too am feeling a little overwhelmed by it all. | |||

| Yes, don't panic! You're doing great! Remember that you need to be realistic with your weight loss goals. The key to your success will be in your ability to achieve that magical "balance" between exercise and calorie consumption that YOU will be able to maintain the rest of your life. You can't look at this as an "overnight" or "short term" thing or you will certainly get depressed. Celebrate your successes and try to enjoy the journey. I've been there and still fight to stay on track. If I wasn't typing this message to you, I'd be eating snacks all night long! lol How many calories are you consuming compared to what C -C's recommended? Alot of people consume too few calories so keep that in mind as well. Good luck! | |||

| I truly know how you feel! Please be kind to yourself and let your body get through the virus/illness whatever it is. Trust me -you'll feel better in a couple of days perhaps as much as a week and try not to get too bummed out. You're only human! You WILL bounce back, physically and mentally. You had a bad day- even the healthiest, most physically fit people do. Their strength is that they KNOW it's only a temporary state and they are more forgiving of themselves/their bodies. Rest up-I hope you feel better soon! | |||
| Weight Loss | uh oh. sodium. | Apr 02 2007 02:12 (UTC) |

| I've heard that diet coke/cola has alot of sodium as well as coffee/caffeinated beverages. Has anyone heard the same? I'll have to check on the CC site and see. I very rarely eat processed meats and microwaveable dinners but I'll eat one of the breakfast cereal bars/granola bars each day as a snack. I'll also have to check the sodium in those puppies! Man, there's alot more to healthy eating than people realize. It's no wonder people start and fail so many times at this! LOL. | |||

| Just out of curiosity (I retain fluids REALLY easily) what kinds of things are you eating in a day that drives the high sodium levels? What foods are known for their high sodium content. | |||

| Yes!! Puffed wheat cake - I knew it had some sugar in it but I thought, come on, it's PUFFED WHEAT! It can't possibly pack in more than 200 calories. Man was I wrong - 400plus calories! I just about fell off my computer chair when I too was logging the calories. LOL! | |||
| Fitness | love handles and arm fat | Mar 25 2007 02:51 (UTC) |

| Hi there! The arms and love handles were a HUGE problem for me (for whatever reason, that's where I seem to carry the excess weight). The layers of fat didn't BUDGE until I upped my cardio - three times a week minimum at quite a high intensity-it's just the way my body responds so it might not have to be that intense for you. Anyways, I've been doing the whole cardio/weight training/carlorie watching thing for a year this April and I can honestly say I didn't start seeing results until the 6 month mark. Still not where I want them to be (I was looking in the mirror tonight and thinking the exact same thing you were - how the heck am I going to get rid of these! ) I'll keep watching your post to see if anyone comes up with some great ideas/suggestions but I think overcastkid hit the nail on the head -it'll happen when it happens. | |||
| Weight Loss | WHY do keep doing this! | Mar 16 2007 00:50 (UTC) |
|
| So? How did you make out today? I didn't do AS bad as yesterday but pretty darn close. That's if I can stay away from food for the rest of the night. (keep typing, keep typing lol) No gym today either 'cause I had a meeting after work. | |||
| Weight Loss | WHY do keep doing this! | Mar 15 2007 03:14 (UTC) |

| I have the same problem! I'll be really good with the eating and exercise and then BAM all of the sudden I have this HUGE appetite (at the same time that my body decides it wants a break from the workout -just great) I eat one chip or piece of chocolate and it's like a trigger-I can't stop. Then I'm mad at myself and get really irritable etc. etc. Wickedly bad, vicious cycle. Today and yesterday have been bad for me and I'm sitting on the couch typing this message and feeling sorry for myself and angry at the same time. I unlike you haven't reached maintenance! I'll be reading everyone's advice they give you to keep myself from eating anymore tonight. Sorry I'm not much help-hopefully we'll both learn something! | |||

| How many calories are you consuming in a day? I had headaches when I wasn't eating enough AND when I drank diet ANYTHING. I was doing the Slim Fast thing at the time and it really didn't work well for me as I just wasn't consuming enough calories. | |||

| I agree with alyney -don't give up! I was at the same place last April - I too upped the cardio and ate about 1500 cals per day and did strength training instead of the yoga. It literally took 2 months before things started happening. I too (at the 3 week mark) was sooooo discouraged I literally cried! I couldn't believe that the hard work wasn't paying off. Unlike you, I belong to a gym and there are a number of really great instructors and personal trainers there who were there to keep me motivated. They ALL said it would take time and not to give up. I didn't believe it at the time and just about threw in the towel a few times but after all the hard work, I just couldn't give in. I'm so glad I listened to everyone. Seriously, give yourself more time. I'm 5'1 and weighed 130 lbs at the time. I'm now 120 and am working on losing just a little more (115 max) My goal this year is to tone it all once I can get to the muscle! Enjoy the journey! | |||

| It's also known as "muffin top". Some are bigger than others depending on how long they've been "cooking" lol (how long it's been since the last baby, the last time you've exercised and watched your calories). It's a curse and I've got it too! It's getting smaller through ALOT of hard work and exercise and I hope to god it goes away one day. | |||

I will certainly let you know my thoughts when I'm done. In the meantime, I welcome whatever other suggestions or information you may have that you think will benefit myself and the other individuals who are also struggling. | |||

| Thanks Shakti! I would like to read more on the "stress" factor-do you know of any good material or books I should read? I can definitely say that when I was doing a group yoga class, I felt good and I felt smaller (if that makes sense) however didn't realize how good it was at the time. I only did once a week for about 6 weeks and found it hard to get into some of the positions (sometimes I swear I'm going to twist my spine/back and I won't be able to get back! lol) Are there any other exercises or activities you could suggest? | |||

| I read recently in one of the fitness magazines (I believe it was Shape) that time of day didn't make a big difference. There was a study done that revealed that people who worked out first thing in the morning showed a slight increase in something (sorry, can't remember if it was fat burn or metabolism speed or ?) however the benefits were so insignificant that they suggested simply working out at a time of the day that best works for you. I've done both. I used to get up at 5:00am and run for 40 minutes, 5 times a week (11 min miles). I didn't lose a pound and it wasn't much fun at that hour. I started working out at 5:30pm after work,4- 5 times a week AND started counting calories and lost 10 pounds in 8 months. May not sound like alot but it was hard to do. Good luck no matter what you choose to do! Hang in there. | |||

| Oh I'm so sorry! I got the two of you confused. Ruth Marie-yes it's the picture of you by the water. You look great and I hope you are able to reach your goal soon-stay healthy!
Anadrea, don't be ashamed! Of course your doc wouldn't want you to exercise. Please continue to see him/her and stay connected with others on this site who can support you through this. I hope you find peace and balance soon -don't give up. |

| Weight Loss | nighttime cravings! | Jan 21 2007 05:28 (UTC) |

| I hear you! I just ate a bowl of cereal-and not because I was hungry. It's a real bad habit that we start somewhere along the way and just like quitting smoking, (perhaps not to that extreme although pretty close-did that one too) it takes time and a little work to break. I play this little game with myself that seems to keep me out of trouble: I tell myself the fridge and cupboards are off limits after 7pm. Some nights I'm ok and I can stay out of them but some nights I don't. The nights I don't, I'll go in a few times and do the following:1st visit - a tall glass of cold water with lots of ice and lemon or lime in it, 2nd visit -boil water and make some peppermint tea, 3rd visit-I break down and get a piece of fruit. By the time I've done this little dance it's close to bed time and I feel like I've cheated when I really haven't. I know it sounds silly but it works for me. I'll keep watching to see what other people do to fight the cravings -good luck! | |||
| Weight Loss | 1% milk......... BLECH! | Jan 21 2007 05:05 (UTC) |

| Am I missing something? Does switching from 2% to 1% make that much of a difference? How much milk are you consuming in a day? I use milk in my one bowl of cereal in the morning and then throughout the day in my coffee. (3 cups of coffee -yes, I know I shouldn't be drinking that much) I thought I was doing good when I went from halfnhalf to 2%! lol | |||
| Weight Loss | 5'2 - What is your goal weight? | Jan 20 2007 04:25 (UTC) |

| Hi Anadrea,
I'm 5'1 1/2 ( every half inch counts) and am 122lbs. I was active (did a little gymnastics) and 98lbs in grade 12 but I was not strong or very healthy-I didn't know what healthy was at that age nor did I care. My goal is 110-115 as that is the weight I think I will look and feel my healthiest. My workouts consist of aerobics, strength training and yoga as I have read (in so many magazines and books) that it's important to incorporate a little of all of those to not only shed the excess body fat but to also gain strong muscles, help fend off osteoperosis and gain some flexibility. Quite honestly I am feeling REALLY strong and balanced right now however it's just the little extra weight I am carrying around my mid-drift that I am looking to shrink or eliminate. The picture of you that was uploaded Jan.07 looks really good in my opinion-maybe add a few more pounds. When you talk about being addicted to exercise, what are you referring to? What's your exercise routine? Are you still dancing on top of all the other exercise? |

| Weight Loss | i just binged on lots of chocolate! HELP!! IDEAS on how to stop the crave? | Jan 09 2007 04:06 (UTC) |

| I feel your pain...throw it out, give it away, do whatever you need to do, just get it far away from you. I have been grabbing a diet cola with a twist of lime when I get the cravings lately and it seems to help. Just keep reminding yourself of how hard you've worked to get here (even if it's only been as little as a day) and don't let the chocolate sabotage it all -it's not worth it! Hang in there! | |||

| I get them like clockwork..every month for about 4-5 days. It's hard to believe the skinny days are around the corner when you're feeling like that but they always are! Not only do I feel fat but for some reason my hair never styles properly and I break out too! I gotta laugh as it freaks me out every month and within a week it's all back to normal. | |||
| Weight Loss | Cravings at night :( | Jan 07 2007 15:17 (UTC) |

| Me too! Over the holidays I ate too much junk and now I am going through some form of withdrawal..pretty well everyday at around 2 in the afternoon. I have had to give all the left over baking away so that when I consider reaching for something, it's not around. I'm a night eater too. I didn't realize how much I consumed until I started logging the calories. For me it's boredom or stress. Like nomoreexcuses suggested, I am definitely the emotional eater. I don't starve myself at all as I am very conscious of the importance of consuming the right foods/calories etc. I found that doing something with my hands such as knitting/cross stitching while watching tv REALLY helped take my mind off the food. Trust me, I can't knit worth beans and I have to pull the whole thing apart most nights lol! Perhaps you can jump online here and participate in some of the forums when you get those night cravings?? | |||
